  • Ubisoft Revives Prince of Persia, But Not As You Hoped

At least it’s not a smartphone game.

There are only two franchises we want out of Ubisoft right now: Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia. The former’s looking unlikely right now, while the latter’s making a comeback – as a virtual reality Escape Room experience. To be fair, Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time sounds neat: you’ll work co-operatively in teams of up to four in a room-scale VR adventure, solving puzzles and manipulating time.

The game will be playable in 300 locations around the globe, and due to the way it’s designed, is probably unlikely to ever make its way to PlayStation VR. Of course, if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know this isn’t the publisher’s first foray into VR Escape Room experiences, as it’s already released two based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The concept must be proving popular for the publisher – but hopefully it invigorates interest in a true Prince of Persia successor on consoles.

  • First Persona 5 Scramble Japanese Review Is a Positive One

    45 hours of content.

Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is out in just over a week in Japan which means that reviews for the eastern release are about to make themselves known. The first rating comes from Famitsu, with the outlet giving it 36/40. That comprises of four 9/10 scores.

It’s a rating lower than what Famitsu awarded Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, with those titles snatching a 39/40 and a 37/40 accordingly, but it still makes for promising reading when you consider the change in gameplay and combat mechanics. On top of that, the review has been translated into English to reveal some interesting details.

  • E3 2020’s First Press Conference Announcement Comes From the Most Unlikely Source

    #LimitedRunSavesE3.

When we think of E3 press conferences, our minds immediately turn to the likes of Sony, Ubisoft, Bethesda, and EA. Some of those publishers will be attending E3 2020 with their live show announcements surely planned for the next couple of months, but they’ve all been beaten to the punch by a completely different company. That’s right folks, we have our very first press conference reveal for this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, and it’s none other than Limited Run Games.

Scheduled to take place on Monday 8th June at 12pm PT/3pm ET/8pm GMT, you’ll be able to soak up the latest and greatest reveals from the team committed to physical releases of video games. The outlet even promises to save the show itself with the hashtag #LimitedRunSavesE3. That’s a tall order indeed.

  • Sony Reportedly Paid $229 Million in Insomniac Games Acquisition

    Is it a bargain?

Sony set social media alight when it completely overshadowed Gamescom Opening Night live 2019 with the acquisition of Insomniac Games, to the point where even Geoff Keighley felt the need to address it live on stage. It was a memorable moment, but until now, we have had no knowledge of how much the Japanese giant actually paid the Marvel’s Spider-Man developer. That figure is now reported to be $229 million.

The news comes as part of a recent SEC filing where it is stated that the sum was paid mostly in cash and is subject to change before the end of the fiscal year next month on 31st March 2020. It’s a hefty sum of money indeed, but does the acquisition represent good value? Of course, Insomniac Games has already raked in the cash for Sony thanks to Peter Parker’s 2018 outing and holds the development keys to the Ratchet & Clank franchise — an important one for the hardware manufacturer as the next-generation approaches.

  • Soapbox: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life Is One of the Best Video Game Send-Offs

    Liam bids Kazuma Kiryu farewell.

For the past month or so, I’ve been committing what some people would consider to be a video gaming sin. I started the story of Kazuma Kiryu back in 2017 with Yakuza 0 and ever since then, I have desperately wanted to see it through to its conclusion. Doing that presented some challenges, however. One of those was playing three of the franchise’s entries via remasters of PlayStation 3 games, and I just couldn’t hack it after a lacking follow-up in Yakuza: Kiwami and Yakuza: Kiwami 2 which felt like more of the same from a narrative standpoint. So, I jumped from the fourth Chairman’s original outing straight to Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. I am so glad I did.

While I have always loved the Dragon of Dojima’s character, the one thing that has continued to put me off the series is the sheer amount of real-life Yakuza knowledge you need to fully wrap your head around each and every one of the clan’s featured families. This guy is the Captain of that family, but that dude is the Lieutenant of the entire alliance. I could recognise some faces, although that’s about as far as it got. Ask me to explain the hierarchy of the Tojo Clan and you’d have me stumped.

  • What’s New in MLB The Show 20

Arguably the best time to play an annually released sports game is at the end of a console generation. Because at that point, if things have gone well (and they have for MLB The Show), the development team has the game looking and playing well already and can focus on sanding the edges. That is my first impression of MLB The Show 20. Gameplay designer Ramone Russell made the first of his annual trips to IGN to show off the latest version of the long-running PlayStation baseball sim, which will soon be coming to Xbox and Nintendo Switch as well.

In the video above, Russell walks me through some of those key tweaks the Sony San Diego development team is making to this year’s game, including rare “perfect/perfect” throws and hits. Below you can see our review of last year’s (excellent) edition:

    [ignvideo url=”https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/03/30/mlb-the-show-19-review”]

MLB The Show 20 will be released on March 17 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. We’ll have more preview coverage prior to the launch, so keep checking back!
