“You’re in a very tough situation, José.” Cinema Guild has debuted an official trailer for an indie drama film titled En El Séptimo Día, which translates to On the Seventh Day. The latest film by Jim McKay, this indie drama is a compelling look at immigrants in America and the work they do for us. The film follows a group of undocumented Mexican immigrants who work long hours six days a week, and then savor their day of rest on Sundays on the soccer fields of Brooklyn. It has been described in reviews as “an ode to those who fight for that glimmer of hope this country claims,” giving us a look at the lives of these immigrants and how hard they work for the chance to have the most basic lives, with their brief freedom to play soccer bringing them the most joy. In many ways 2018 is both the best and worst period of time to be a fan of the Star Wars franchise. On one hand, with Disney and the Kathleen Kennedy-led Lucasfilm in charge of the slate of new films, there are more stories set in the tumultuous galaxy being told than ever before. On the flipside, the notion of burnout with all these Star Wars films can be felt to say nothing of the turbulent manner in which many fans find themselves. There is more conflict among the fan-base than there ever was under George Lucas‘ control, the catalyst of which stems from Lucasfilm’s concept of going back and forth between stories set in the main Skywalker saga, and extra standalone stories set elsewhere in the time and place of the Star Wars galaxy. ›››

Looking back on Cannes this year, everything did turn out pretty well. No disasters, nothing bad happened, no big complaints, they actually let us bring in water to the cinemas this year (they didn’t last year). At the start of the festival, I wrote about how they were entering a new era and starting out by making some major changes – and who knew how this would all affect us. Now that the 71st Cannes Film Festival is finished, the awards handed out, looking back on the experience – it was a great year. It went smooth, they showed a ton of outstanding films, plus a few bad ones. Even though it wasn’t exactly perfect, they seemed to actually be making some good progress getting into a new era and slowly setting a precedent for the next few years. Dare I say, they’re making the right steps. Little by little, they’re cleaning up their act and still remaining relevant – even without Netflix films (for now). Don’t listen to the naysayers, Cannes is as important as ever. ›››

“People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.” Disney has debuted an adorable full-length trailer for their upcoming Christopher Robin movie, from director Marc Forster, a live-action re-introduction of all the Winnie the Pooh characters. Ewan McGregor stars in this as a working-class family man in London named Christopher Robin, of course. He re-encounters his childhood friend Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life. The main human cast includes Hayley Atwell, Mark Gatiss, Adrian Scarborough, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, and Paul Chahidi. For the voices: Jim Cummings as Winnie-the-Pooh, Chris O’Dowd as Tigger, Toby Jones as Owl, Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, Sophie Okonedo as Kanga, and Nick Mohammed as Piglet. Made by Israeli filmmaker Ofir Raul Graizer, the film is about a talented young German baker who travels to Israel after his secret lover, an Israeli married man, is killed in a car crash. There he searches for his lover’s wife and son, but ends up lost in an entirely different world with all kinds of feelings to deal with. Tim Kalkhof stars as Thomas, along with Sarah Adler, Zohar Shtrauss, Sandra Sade, and Roy Miller. The film won various awards at the Jerusalem Film Festival, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, and Miami Jewish Film Festival. “People come here to fulfill their dreams.” Passion River Films has debuted their official US trailer for a documentary titled The Workers Cup, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (in 2017) and went on to play at tons of festivals all over the world including CPH:DOX and the Zurich Film Festival. From director Adam Sobel, who spent years in Qatar getting footage, the film profiles the construction of the venues that Qatar is building for the World Cup in 2022. “Inside Qatar’s labor camps, African and Asian migrant workers building the facilities of the 2022 World Cup compete in a football tournament of their own.” What most people don’t know, is that these migrant workers are dying by the dozens (source) trying to complete these facilities, living in terrible conditions – but they still strive on in love for the sport and a desire to contribute something to the world through their hard labor. “Ah, beautiful day. Blue skies. Large caliber weapons. I love getting out of the office.” Sony Pictures has released a third official trailer for the dark thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the sequel to Sicario, Denis Villeneuve’s intense thriller set along the US-Mexico border. Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro return to star in this one, which looks like it has more action and even more intensity than the first film. In Soldado, the drug war has escalated as the cartels have shifted to trafficking terrorists across the border. Del Toro seems to take the lead as the point man running the latest intrusion into the cartel scene in hopes of cleaning it up. Also starring Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener. This is looking very good, but it’s an easy sell with all the action and Brolin being badass as always. ›››

“There’s nothing for you to worry about… you’re perfectly safe here.” The first official trailer has debuted for a film playing at the Seattle Film Festival coming up this summer, titled Susu, the feature directorial debut of Chinese writer/director Yixi Sun. This “psychological thriller with a stylish international twist” is about two Chinese girls who take a film transcription job located in a heritage English countryside mansion. Discovering entangled family secrets about the Kunqu Opera star Susu, they find it almost impossible to escape, physically and emotionally. It was actually shot at historical sites, including a 16th century English mansion and the old house of Charlie Chaplin and his mother. Susu stars Zitong Wu, Lin Zhu, Frederick Szkoda, Steve Edwin, Tom Mannion, Laura June Hudson, Roslyn Hill, and Junjie Mao as Susu. This looks extra melodramatic and a bit campy, but I quite like the intertwining of old cinema and thriller. ›››
