  • Rumour: Warner Bros to Cast Lumos on Anticipated PS5 Harry Potter RPG

    It’ll probably Slytherin.

It’s been years since we first feasted on leaked footage of a Harry Potter role-playing game, strongly rumoured to be in development at Utah-based developer Avalanche Software. The team – not to be confused with Avalanche Studios, the Swedish studio best known for the Just Cause games – is a subsidiary of Warner Bros and has been staffing up for a British-themed blockbuster for many years.

Now it looks like an announcement could be imminent, as a job listing for an Associate Lighting Technical Artist mentions that candidates will “work closely with a talented group of artists and engineers on an exciting, soon to be announced AAA title”. It goes on to make multiple references to Unreal Engine 4, which will presumably be the tech powering the anticipated title.

  • Talking Point: PS5 Delay Is Possible, And We Could Have to Accept That

    Not now next-gen.

As far as we know, the PlayStation 5 is still scheduled to release this coming holiday. Of course, we’re beginning to get the distinct impression that plans may change. Sony’s been relatively quiet about its next-gen plans since it showcased the system’s familiar logo at CES 2020 earlier in the year, but while it still may be abiding to an internal timeline, we’re beginning to wonder if the escalating coronavirus epidemic has pushed it into a position of silence.

Before we continue, we should point out that there are far bigger concerns than video games when it comes to the aforementioned disease. People are dying, or at least becoming gravely ill, and we’re not in any way suggesting that new consoles should take priority over the health of human beings. That said, this is a PlayStation website, so of course we’re going to focus on the impact to our passion, even if it’s irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

  • Former PlayStation Boss Doesn’t Miss The Console Wars

Former PlayStation executive Adam Boyes sounds as if he is happy for the “console wars” period of his life to be over. Boyes, who was vice president for third-party relations at PlayStation from 2012-2016, told USgamer that he loved what he did, who he worked with, and what he achieved during his run at Sony. But there was also a lot of stress.

“Sometimes I feel like I have an opinion, but it doesn’t matter because I did that,” Boyes said about the forthcoming launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year, and all the pressure that comes with being an executive at a company launching a new system. “I put in my all. I loved it. Built an incredible team, had an incredible experience. […] So you think that I would have a FOMO that I’m not part of it, but it really isn’t. There was so much stress and I think the whole console battle concept, it takes you over. It’s like, that’s all you think about.”

Boyes was an executive at PlayStation for the launch of the PlayStation 4 in 2013. The “console battle concept,” as he calls it, is surely in reference to how PlayStation and Xbox are historically known to push very hard against each other as they try to position their own console as the one to buy. Boyes has a history in that kind of upfront strategy.

  • Fallout 76’s Wastelanders Update Broke The Budget On Voice Actors

The Fallout 76 team has had a lot to do in the last year, working to flesh out a world once populated only by players and monsters. It may come as no surprise to find out that some of the game’s upgrades came in over budget.

In an interview published by USgamer, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines went into some detail about the process of developing Wastelanders, discussing both the project’s goals and what went into achieving them.

With a world of new NPCs to be integrated into the game, Hines reveals that the designers went a little ham with adding dialogue that would then have to be delivered by voice actors. “They went much beyond what they were budgeted to do because designers can’t help themselves. So they blew past their word count budgets,” he said.

Watch: Riz Ahmed’s Short ‘The Long Goodbye’ Directed by Aneil Karia

    The Long Goodbye Short Film

“Did they ask you where you’re from…? Where’re you really from?” Oh, damn. British actor / musician Riz Ahmed has released a short film titled The Long Goodbye, which was created as a creative project that goes hand-in-hand with his new album (also titled “The Long Goodbye“). The intense short film starts out rather lovely, showing Riz with his family, but it turns into something much more sinister and frightening halfway through. Ahmed explains that he created this album and this short, made by director Aneil Karia, because he’s breaking up with the UK. “The record is a breakup album – but with your country. So many of us feel like we’re being dumped by the place we call home, a home that we built.” And the short film, “takes this feeling to its conclusion.” Yes it most certainly does. If you look closely, the symbols the “bad men” are wearing look similar to the logo for the fascist Norsefire Party in V for Vendetta. I’m sure that’s on purpose. ›››

  • New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Psychedelic ‘Son of the White Mare’

New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Psychedelic ‘Son of the White Mare’

Son of the White Mare Trailer

“Let’s see how strong you are. Pull it up by its roots.” Arbelos has released a new official trailer for the 4K restoration of an underground animated classic called Son of the White Mare. Heard of it before? This psychedelic Hungarian animated movie was made by animation master Marcell Jankovics (Sisyphus, The Tragedy of Man, Song of the Miraculous Hind, Johnny Corncob) and first released in 1981. It never showed in theaters in the US, and has only appeared at various film festivals or in bootleg form. The film has been restored in 4K using the original 35mm camera negative and sound elements by Arbelos in collaboration with the Hungarian Film Archive. A goddess in the shape of a horse gives birth to three super-powered sons who set out on a mission to save three princesses from three evil dragons and reclaim their kingdom from the underworld. The film acts as trippy visual commentary on pollution and humanity’s destruction of the world. And it definitely looks stunning! If you’ve never seen it, now is the perfect time to catch up with this. ›››

  • Death Stranding’s Photo Mode May Yet Come to PS4

    Snap ’em up.

We reckon a Sony published game without a Photo Mode is a bit like a peanut butter sandwich without any jam – it’s just not quite right. News that the PC port of Death Stranding will include the oft-requested feature left PlayStation 4 owners somewhat disgruntled recently, as the option is absent from the original release.

Fortunately, director Hideo Kojima has hinted that it could be added in. Writing on Twitter, the auteur said that he “may consider it as an update”, which is good news for budding photographers out there. The Metal Gear man later retweeted a message from a fan, who posted a camera emoji along with the caption: “Can’t wait for the next update on PS4.” Make of it what you will.
