  • Steam Autumn Sale 2018: all the best games and deals through Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Steam Autumn Sale 2018: all the best games and deals through Black Friday and Cyber Monday

The Steam Autumn Sale is here. The folks over at Valve’s all-encompassing PC gaming platform have a massive library of thousands of titles, and small discounts and deals prop up all the time on everything from indie darlings to AAA tentpoles.

The seasonal sales, however, often hold some of the best discounts out there. It’s no coincidence that Steam’s Autumn Sale coincides with the massive deals avalanche that is Black Friday, and is running until Tuesday 27 November (10:05am BST / 2:05am PST/ 5:55am EST / 9:05pm AEDT). Besides the seasonal sales, there’s a continuing selection of weekly sales to pick from too.

In this guide we’ll keep you up right to date with the best deals and discounts currently available on the platform, and how to get the best out of the Steam Autumn Sales.

Steam Autumn Sale 2018: the best PC game deals

    Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection (94% off RRP)

This Borderlands bundle packs in a huge amount of content for an incredibly low price. Sure, some of that content is filler – costume packs, small add-on quests and the like, alongside larger expansions and the full Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel games – but boy do you get your money’s worth.

    No Man's Sky

No Man’s Sky (50% off RRP)

Don’t be fooled by the ‘mixed’ user rating: it’s a testament to Hello Games’ steady updates that this space exploration sim has crawled back from the harsh reviews of its much maligned launch. The Next expansion finally brought in online multiplayer, along a host of other improvements, with other updates incoming. At half-price, now may be the time to get the game that was promised in the first place.

    Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (35% off RRP)

The remastered trilogy of Crash Bandicoot shows just how strong the central platforming in these hectic, globetrotting, box-smashing, spin-jumping, even time-travelling games was – and it holds up just as well today. You can get it on near any platform now – not to mention Sony’s PlayStation – but this 35% saving makes a case for getting it on PC.

far cry 5 ps4 xbox one pc

Far Cry Franchise (up to 75% off)

The Far Cry games have been a benchmark for both large, exotic sandbox environments and gripping player-led action. The latest, Far Cry 5 (50% off), was a stunning (if politically hedged) take on America’s Deep South, but the likes of neanderthal-era Far Cry Primal and Himalayan-set Far Cry 4 (both 75% off) remain series bests. The original Far Cary and Far Cry 2 are both 60% off too.

    Sonic Mania

    Sonic Mania (67% off RRP)

One of the the most acclaimed Sonic games of recent years – which hasn’t been hard, to be honest. A return to form that feels like classic Sonic platforming while offering new twists on gameplay. For game’s further back than 2017, there’s a whole sale of old Sonic games with even bigger 75% discounts.

    Fallout 4

Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition (60% off)

The 2015 follow-up to Fallout 3 brought in a bigger, denser, more fully realized wasteland in the bestselling post-apocalyptic series. There’s more of a focus on combat – you’ll slow down, rather than freeze the action when shooting now – but this is still the Fallout RPG experience we wanted. For those of you not getting a kick out of the online multiplayer Fallout 76 game, it might be worth looking at what the series does best. The GOTY Edition packs in all the game’s additional DLC, too.

    Black Mesa (Half-life fan recreation)

    Black Mesa (67% off RRP)

A fan-made recreation of the original 1998 Half-Life game. Explore the Black Mesa facility, fight off head crabs with your trusty crowbar, and see where the bestselling sci-fi adventure franchise all began.

    Steam Winter Sale 2018

    The Steam Winter Sale will go live on December 20 at 9:55am BST / 1:55am PST / 4:55 EST / 8:55pm AEDT and will run until January 3 at 10:05am BST / 2:05am PST/ 5:55am EST / 9:05pm AEDT.

How to get the best deals in the Steam Autumn Sale 2018

Whichever way you approach a particular Steam Sale, you’re guaranteed to have the chance to pick up some top gaming titles at great prices.

Finding bargains isn’t too difficult, but there are a few techniques and tricks that are worth using if you want to get the most out of the sales.

    • Use your Steam Wishlist: Fill it up with all the games you’re interested in picking up, and you’ll be alerted the moment they go on sale, and by how much.
    • Bundles are great: Publishers often pull their titles together in sale mega-packs, ramping up the savings to even greater heights. If there’s a suite of titles from a publisher like Square Enix or Activision that you’ve never played before, this is the best – and cheapest – way to bag them all at once. As you’d imagine, the value diminishes if you’ve already got a few bundled titles in your library.
    • Highlighted deals are where the real savings are: The majority of the Steam store back-catalogue will get some sort of price cut, but it’s the ‘Highlighted’ deals (the ones promoted on the Steam front splash page) that tend to be more heavily discounted. These are the ones where you may fall into impulse-buy territory. Which leads us on to our next tip…
    • Only buy what you’ll actually play right away: Once those 75% off signs start floating around, you’re going to want to break open the piggy-bank. But the Steam Sales of yesteryear have proved that our desire for overflowing game libraries leaves us with more titles than we could ever humanly play. Save some cash, and only grab the ones you’re really going to play – keep in mind that if you wait a while, the games will almost certainly get cheaper as they get older.
    • Use this browser extension: Want to make sure you’re getting a good deal? Use the Enhanced Steam browser extension. This gives you a historical look at the price of all Steam games, letting you see just how many pennies have been saved.

    Steam Autumn Sale 2018

The best Steam Sale deals of days gone by

Gone but not forgotten, here’s our collection of all the best deals we’ve seen in days gone by. Use them as a point of reference for what you should be expecting – or, you know, lament the ones that got away.

Tomb Raider franchise: The iconic explorer has seen a huge transformation since her debut outing in ’96, moving from polygonal poster-girl to complex, conflicted heroine. And with 70-90% discounts across the entire platforming series, this was the perfect time to join her on that journey…

Left 4 Dead 2: Valve’s cooperative zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2 pits four survivors against the undead horde, and has an absolute blast doing it. With procedurally-altered campaigns, too, the game is smart enough to vary the challenge depending on how (and how well) you play. And at 90% off RRP, it was basically free…

Shadow of Mordor bundle: Perhaps the definitive Lord of the Rings video game, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was lauded on release for its stellar combat, open-world action, and an intelligent Nemesis system that. If 50 Game of the Year awards weren’t enough to convince you, a hefty 70% discount on the Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War bundle certainly should have been.

The Witcher 3: Inarguably the game of 2015, The Witcher 3 is also now widely considered the best RPG of all time. A sprawling dark fantasy epic, it’s a beautiful game, and one that’s a great showpiece for your souped-up gaming PC too.

And, with the Game of the Year Edition being heavily discounted in the Steam Summer Sale, it was a fantastic way to jump into this monumental game, and get all of its DLC at a discount too.

    Steam Autumn Sale 2018

What games will be in the Steam Autumn Sale 2018?

First off, you shouldn’t expect brand-new games to get the really steep discounts that have become synonymous with the Steam sales. You may see a 5%, or even 10% discount on games that have been recent big hits, but if they’re still new enough to be spinning money without needing a price cut, don’t expect that to change now that the sale is here.

But, with the exception of the newer titles, pretty much the entire store receives a 25% discount, if not higher, with a select few seeing a massive 90% off the list price. While the store now highlights what Valve considers the best deals, it’s worth noting that flash and community sales are no longer in the mix, so feel free to pick a title on sale when you like – its discounted price will stand for the duration of the sale.

Of course, there are other gaming stores out there, and it’s worth checking their wares too, to see if you can’t bag an even bigger bargain elsewhere. GOG.com is a great place to start, and if you’re platform-agnostic and looking for multi-platform titles, keep an eye on the PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Deals with Gold offers, too.

  • Prepare For More Shmup Action When Hucast Releases Ghost Blade HD On Switch In 2019

    Physical and digital release confirmed.

As niche as the shoot ’em up genre might be, on the Switch it’s growing in size by the day. If Ghost Blade HD sounds familiar, that’s because the developer Hucast Games previously released this bullet hell shooter on the Wii U eShop in 2017.

The German-based developer has now announced the game will be revived in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch. No exact date has been locked in. The game will support TATE mode for vertical play and will also include leaderboards, achievements and a two player mode. Publishing will be handled by Eastasiasoft Limited.

  • Video: YouTube Content Creators Team Up With Nintendo To Promote Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

    Changing times.

Nintendo has had bumpy relations with content creators over the years. Previously it has restricted live streaming on certain platforms and upped the requirements for its controversial YouTube creators program to match changes on the video website. In general, the Japanese company doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to acknowledging or embracing these modern influencers.

With a game like the upcoming Switch release Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fueled by the community, Nintendo evidently realises it’s important to spread the word about the most anticipated release of the year. In order to do this, it’s called on several content creators to help promote the title with their own unique fighter videos.

  • Saints Row: The Third Brings The Full Package To Nintendo Switch Next Year

    Full of it.

The Saints Row series has come under fire on a number of occasions in the past for its edgy gameplay containing violence, drugs and sexual references. While Rockstar’s open world series Grand Theft Auto might be the more well-known of the two, make no mistake – this THQ published title is just as rebellious, with some entries in this series even being refused classification in certain parts of the world until they were altered and resubmit.

Earlier this year, during a surprise reveal at Gamescom 2018, Deep Silver confirmed Saints Row: The Third would be arriving on the Switch in 2019. While no exact date was dropped, we’ve got a minor update to share. Channelling its naughty history, the Switch version of the game will be known as Saints Row: The Third – The Full Package. Considering this is a game that loves to make lewd references, this is most definitely a play on words. Judging by the name, it will also include all of the game’s download content, which was also labelled ‘The Full Package’ back in the day. The full title for the game was spotted on the Brazillian Advisory Rating website:

  • Cyber Monday 2018 Deals: What You Can Expect

Cyber Monday 2018 Deals: What You Can Expect

Black Friday is generally considered the year’s biggest shopping day, seeing as it kicks off most retailers’ holiday season. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore Cyber Monday. The online shopping holiday was created in 2005 and has grown to the point where it was the biggest online shopping day in the US last year. But now that online Black Friday deals are often just as good as in-store ones, what role will Cyber Monday play in 2018? Let’s look at what to expect from Cyber Monday 2018; we’ve also got a roundup of the confirmed Cyber Monday deals.

    When Is Cyber Monday 2018?

Cyber Monday always lands on the Monday following Black Friday. Since Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, this year’s Cyber Monday falls on November 26, 2018. But just like how Black Friday is being drawn out at some retailers into a multi-day sale event, Cyber Monday is too. Some retailers are even calling it Cyber Week, so they’ll be offering sale prices throughout the whole week of November 26 and in some cases, beyond.

What Retailers Will Participate In Cyber Monday?

Generally, the same retailers that have Black Friday sales will try to keep customers coming back on Cyber Monday. That means anyone looking for video game and entertainment deals will want to keep an eye on Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Newegg, Target, Kohl’s, and Walmart in particular.

Many digital game sellers will also be having Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, though many of them will likely run a single sale that spans both shopping holidays. Expect to see sales on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo Eshop, Steam, and other PC storefronts like Humble, Fanatical, and Green Man Gaming.

When Will We See Cyber Monday Deal Announcements?

Unsurprisingly, retailers tend to put most of their marketing efforts toward Black Friday during November. In fact, most of the biggest retailers have already released their Black Friday ads, so we largely know what deals to expect in terms of video games and entertainment (you can find details about all the Black Friday sales here). But Cyber Monday offers a way for stores to keep the customers coming back, so expect to see Cyber Monday ads appearing over Black Friday weekend, November 24-25.

    What Deals To Expect

    No Caption Provided

Last year, Best Buy and GameStop kept many of their video game deals going through Black Friday weekend and into Cyber Monday. On Cyber Monday, Target offered 15% off most items online (with a few exceptions in the video game category). For its part, Steam ran a single Black Friday weekend sale that lasted through Monday.

In general, though, don’t expect Cyber Monday to have deeply discounted doorbuster deals like you’ll find on Black Friday. So if you see something you want for an appealing price on Black Friday, it’s usually not a good idea to wait for Cyber Monday to see if you can get an even better deal.

That said, common sale items this Black Friday, like the PS4 Slim with Spider-Man for $200 and $100 discounts on Xbox One S and X, are likely to continue through Cyber Monday at many retailers.

When In Doubt, Check Price History

If you’re not sure if the deal you’re considering on Cyber Monday is a good one, it’s wise to check the item’s price history to see how low it has gone in the past and how often it tends to go on sale. You can check sites like Camelcamelcamel to get the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision on games, consoles, movies, TVs, and the like.

    Check Back

Just as we’re tracking the best Black Friday deals on all things video games and entertainment, we’ll be here highlighting the best deals around on Cyber Monday.

  • Cyber Monday 2018 Preview: All The Deals We Already Know About

While most deal hunters are focusing on Black Friday this week, another shopping holiday is right around the corner. It’s Cyber Monday, and this year it falls on November 26. This online shopping day might seem like an afterthought after Black Friday, but it’s a terrific day of deals in its own right. Last year, Cyber Monday was the biggest online shopping day in the US, and you can bet retailers noticed. That’s why they’ll be dropping prices once again in hopes of grabbing their share of online consumer holiday spending.

Many more details about the Cyber Monday deals will start to appear over the weekend, once Black Friday is over and bargain shoppers have begun to catch their breath. But some Cyber Monday information is already here. Let’s take a look at what sales we know we’ll find on Cyber Monday 2018.

    PlayStation Network

You don’t have to wait for Cyber Monday to get digital PS4 games at nicely discounted prices. Sony has already made its Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale live on the PSN. Running between now and November 27, this sale drops prices on games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 ($48), Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ($40), and hundreds more.

    Xbox Live

Along the same lines, Xbox One owners can already pick up a huge selection of games for discounted prices. And while no specific Cyber Monday sale has been announced, Microsoft’s current deals will be available between now and November 26.

    Ebay

Not content to offer just an extended weekend’s worth of discounts, Ebay is doing an eight-day sale across Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and beyond. The online retailer will also have special deals only available on Cyber Monday, including limited-time discounts popping up every hour from 6 AM – 9 PM ET (3 AM – 6 PM PT). The company promises deals offering up to 80% off Apple, Xbox, Nintendo products, and more.

Ebay will also have a “Best Price Guarantee” program, which not only matches eligible competitors’ prices, but also knocks an extra 10% off. There are no blackout dates, so it even applies to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

    Walmart

Walmart will have a Cyber Monday sale, but we only have a few details about it so far. Expect to see a full rundown on Saturday or Sunday, once the Black Friday smoke has cleared. In the meantime, we know the following items will be on sale.

    • MSI GV62 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3G for $799 ($200 savings)
    • SAMSUNG 58″ Class 4K (2160P) Ultra HD Smart LED TV for $447.99 ($80 savings)

    GameStop

GameStop has said that many of its Black Friday deals will continue over the weekend and run through Cyber Monday. But if this year shakes out like some previous years, some of the best Black Friday deals will come back around on Cyber Monday.

    Best Buy

Though details are sparse, Best Buy has announced it will expand Cyber Monday over two days: Sunday, November 25 and Monday, November 26. Additionally, some deals will be available all that week at Best Buy.

    Target

Target has a history of participating in Cyber Monday discounts, so it’s a safe bet to assume the practice will continue this year. On Cyber Monday last year, Target offered 15% off nearly every item available on its website, so let’s hope for a similar deal this year.

    Apple Store

Apple hasn’t announced its Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals yet, but the company has said its sale will run November 23-26, which encompasses both shopping holidays.
