  • How Historically Accurate is Red Dead Redemption 2?

Watch its unimaginably long  credit roll and you’ll spot a number of researchers whose roles were dedicated to making sure Red Dead Redemption 2 reflected a historical reality. Outside of the simulation genre, video games tends to play very fast and loose with history, but Rockstar Games has goes above and beyond in every effort to make the world seem deeply believable while functioning within the parameters of an open world entertainment experience. This dedication realism exercised by Rockstar is commendable, but the team also clearly understood that pure, unadulterated retellings of real-world events and frontier life also wouldn’t perfectly serve their creative purposes.

  • Video: Bad Christmas video game selection box 2018

Contrary to popular belief, there are a load of video games that centre on Christmas, and Colm’s looking at three today. Whilst not full of cheer, they’re full of festive things like an office Christmas party and a killer Rudolf.

Fortnite Player Performs Popular Christmas Song With Enormous Piano

Although the above photo may look like 24 characters on a giant piano in Fortnite, it’s actually just one person using different skins. With careful timing and some good editing, one player created a Fortnite rendition of All I Want For Christmas and spliced together each recording.

While his post on Reddit is a little deceiving, saying that it’s 24 players playing the song, the video is nonetheless pretty cool. It starts off with just music from the piano, but later incorporates sounds from Fortnite’s weapons to emphasize parts of the song.

You can watch the whole thing below:

  • Soapbox: I Would Never Have Played the Excellent Bloodborne if Not for PS Plus

Stephen tells the tale of how he joined the hunt.

For those that aren’t aware, I’m a proper wuss. I have an irrational fear of spiders and other creepy crawlies, and I’d much rather watch the works of Walt Disney than Tobe Hooper. The scariest film I’ve ever seen is probably Alien, and I’d say the scariest game I’ve ever played, until recently, was The Last of Us. Halloween for me is carving pumpkins and hoping trick-or-treaters don’t arrive to steal my chocolate. I’m not into horror on any level, really.

However, back in March of this year, Sony added two highly acclaimed PS4 exclusives to the PlayStation Plus lineup. One was Ratchet & Clank – which I’d already played and loved, obviously – and the other was Bloodborne, a joint effort between From Software and Japan Studio. I’d heard a lot about this game, not least from Push Square’s illustrious editor and Lovecraft lover, Sammy Barker. I distinctly remember the reveal of the game formerly known as Project Beast during E3 2014. Let’s remind ourselves of that initial trailer.

  • PS Plus Members Received Over $1,500 in Free Games This Year

    Still a no brainer.

Yes, technically you pay for PlayStation Plus’ so-called “free” games, but a standard 12-month subscription for $59.99 landed members over $1,500 in software this year. There were some pretty bloody big games available as part of the lineup, too, including the likes of Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank, Mad Max, and Yakuza: Kiwami.

According to some Polygon number crunching, the average age of the games was just over three years, but continued support for the ancient PlayStation 3 has really bumped that number up. It’s going to be interesting to see how the service evolves in 2019, with strong competition from Xbox Game Pass and changes afoot.

  • Bethesda Is Handing Out Fallout Classic Collection to All Fallout 76 Players

    Happy nuke year.

Bethesda has had quite the uphill battle with Fallout 76, and it’s doing its best to win back some much needed positive rep. Case in point: the publisher has said it’ll be handing out free copies of Fallout Classic Collection to all those who played the buggy online title in 2018.

The collection, which includes Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, might be PC only, but the freebie will be given to those playing on PS4 too. It’s a nice holiday gesture, and anyone with a half decent computer should be able to enjoy the trio of games with no trouble. It seems that codes will be handed out at the start of the new year.

  • Game of the Year 2018: #8 – Shadow of the Colossus

    They call me the wanderer.

The odds are that if you have a conversation about the merits of video games as an art form, someone is going to bring up Shadow of the Colossus. Team ICO’s 2005 masterpiece is no stranger to re-releases, having been ported to the PlayStation 3 in an impressive package in 2011, but this time things were different. Rather than “merely” transferring the game to new hardware, developer Bluepoint Games remade the classic title using today’s technology. The end result is a version of Wander’s journey through a forbidden land that looks so much better than we could have ever imagined back when the game first launched.

This is all the more impressive when you consider the fact that the creative vision and intent of the game remains intact. It is an uncompromising vision of the original title, retaining the heart-achingly sombre title’s intent while sprucing everything up. The game’s charmingly janky controls remain intact and your horse, Agro, remains… Well, not the brightest. But everything just looks so much more vivid. The game now looks like what you probably thought it looked like back in the day.
