PlayStation Classic Mini Console Is On Sale For Nearly Half Price Already

Sony released the PlayStation Classic on December 3, confirming rumors that it was working on a competitor to Nintendo’s line of miniature consoles. One of the surprises was the system’s $100 price tag, which is higher than Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classics, which cost $60 and $80 respectively. The price isn’t such a big problem this week, because many retailers currently have the PlayStation Classic marked down to $60. That’s 40% off a product that released less than a month ago.

PlayStation Classic is a miniature version of the original PlayStation console from 1995. It comes with 20 PS1 games loaded onto it and two full-sized controllers so you and a partner can play the games that support couch co-op. You can find the full list of the games included on the system below.

Deals this good don’t tend to last long, so if you’ve had your eye on a PlayStation Classic, now is a good time to grab one. Fair warning, though: in GameSpot’s PlayStation Classic review, critic Peter Brown wasn’t thrilled with the retro console. “The PS Classic doesn’t feel like a celebration of PlayStation’s formative years the way Nintendo’s systems do,” he wrote.

Speaking of Nintendo’s mini console series, if you want an NES or SNES Classic, you might want to pick it up soon, because Nintendo is about to cease production of the miniature consoles. In the meantime, you can still find them in stock at several retailers.

    BEYOND!

On this week’s episode of IGN’s weekly PlayStation show, Beyond!, I, host Jonathon Dornbush, along with Brian Altano and Lucy O”Brien, welcome God of War director Cory Barlog for the final episode of 2018. With God of War named IGN’s Best Game of 2018, the crew and Cory reflect back on God of War’s success, development, and the overall work of Cory and the team at Sony Santa Monica Studio. If you’ve already seen IGN’s God of War spoilercast, think of this as a part 2 to that conversation (which means, yes, there will be spoilers).

  • Fans Are Debating Whether GoT and Skyrim's Dragons Are Actually Wyverns

If the Internet is to be believed, Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons might have some serious soul-searching to do about that last title in particular. A great dragon debate has waged on among fans over Christmas, who finally determined that the so-called “dragons” in Game of Thrones are actually — and more accurately — wyverns.

    Let’s examine the evidence.

This debate over the accurate term for the winged beasts in Game of Thrones (and Skyrim) stems from the distinction that a dragon is technically a creature with four legs and two wings, while a wyvern has two legs and two wings, and uses its wings as additional legs. This post from Redditor 4h0y1m4p1r4t3 has over two thousand responses of people both debating the different names of various types of dragon-like creatures, or alternately having their minds blown that the “dragons” in Game of Thrones and Skyrim aren’t actually dragons.

  • PlayStation Plus January 2019 Free Games Revealed

Ahead of the new year, Sony has revealed the first lineup of free games coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers in 2019.

Here is the list of free games, including which platforms the games will be available for:

    • Steep (PS4)
    • Portal Knights (PS4)
    • Zone of the Enders HD Collection (PS3)
    • Amplitude (PS3)
    • Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion (PS Vita, Cross Buy with PS4)
    • Super Mutant Alien Assault (PS Vita)

These six games will be available for free to download from Jan. 1, 2019 through Feb. 5, 2019.

Ubisoft’s Steep first launched in 2016, and has been continually updated with new content and live activities, including X Games integration. IGN reviewed Steep when it first launched, calling it “a fresh extreme sports journey through a huge map, slowed only by dull paragliding and a lack of progression.”

  • Steep And Portal Knights Headline The First PlayStation Plus Lineup Of 2019

Steep And Portal Knights Headline The First PlayStation Plus Lineup Of 2019

If Santa left a PlayStation 4 or some PlayStation Plus cards under the tree for you yesterday, you might be eager to find out what games you can download with the subscription starting in January. The monthly service, which is also required to play online multiplayer on the system, lets you download and play a number of free games per month, letting you keep them as long as your paid subscription remains active.

Whether you have snow this season or not, Ubisoft is about to dump a mountainload on your PS4 with Steep. The game has a number of events designed to make the most of its open world by having you compete in various sports in different ways. Ski down the mountain, don a squirrel suit to fly through rings, snowboard over a sick ramp, and more. The PlayStation Plus version does not include Steep’s expansion content, Road to the Olympics. You can find our review of the game right here.

The other PlayStation 4 game is Portal Knights, which is probably best described as a Minecraft-like with more action-RPG trappings. The game was quite popular on Steam Early Access and eventually made its way to consoles last year.

For non-PS4 offerings, Sony is also putting up Amplitude (PS3), Fallen Legion (Vita), Super Mutant Alien Assault (Vita), and curiously Zone of the Enders HD Collection (PS3). The last one is strange because it seems like they could have also offered the PS4 version of Zone of the Enders 2, which includes a new VR mode.

As a reminder, the clock is ticking on PlayStation 3 and Vita games on the service. Sony announced in March that they would be ceasing non-PlayStation 4 games on the service in March 2019, but they would not be increasing the number of PS4 games a month to compensate.

  • Reader Discussion: What Video Game-Related Gifts Did You Give Or Receive?

Reader Discussion: What Video Game-Related Gifts Did You Give Or Receive?

This has been a big year for gaming, with a slew of fantastic games. Heavy weights like Red Dead Redemption II and God of War are only scraping the surface. Insomniac delivered the gift of giving Spider-Man a game worthy of his exploits. Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series came back to much fanfare. Super Bros. Ultimate got us competitive with our friends again. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey took us to Ancient Greece, using its RPG mechanics to its advantage. I’m sure you’re in the camp of someone who either wanted one of these games or gave them to someone else. After all, the holidays are bursting with generosity.

One of favorite parts is how people go out of their way and get creative, or give us that one thing that makes us jump for joy like we’re a kid again. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting something we’ve been pining for but can’t afford, like a video game or a console; other times people go to extremes to hunt down crafty video game memorabilia for fans, such as a special plush, figure, or t-shirt that’s hard to find. Either way, we thought it’d be cool to share a special gift you gave or received and discuss why you’re excited about it.

Share your favorite gifts and why in the comments below!
