  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? – Issue 274

    Calm before the storm.

It’s the final weekend before E3 2019, so if you’ve got any outstanding games you want to clear from your backlog, now would be the time to get busy. Well, we suppose you could save them until after the big show, but where’s the fun in that? Get busy.

    Sammy Barker, Editor

I’ve been having a blast with my PlayStation VR headset these past couple of weeks, so I’ll be replaying Blood & Truth and trying to improve my scores in Everybody’s Golf VR. I’m also tempted to pick up Trover Saves the Universe, but think I can resist.

Void Bastards Is Good But Getting A Bit Repetitive

I fell in love with Void Bastards before I even played a moment of it. The art style just instantly clicked with me in a way that rarely happens. I didn’t even know what kind of game it was until I started playing it earlier this week. It turns out this beautiful and stylish game is like a randomized Bioshock mixed…

  • Destiny 2’s Season Of Opulence Outlines Its Reward Structure, Buffs To Swords And Fusion Rifles

Destiny 2’s Season Of Opulence Outlines Its Reward Structure, Buffs To Swords And Fusion Rifles

As it gears up for next week’s Season of Opulence, Bungie has announced a few more details about what will change when the new season hits next week.

First, the developer outlined how the reward structure for the new activity, The Menagerie, will work. Before you can play the activity, you’ll have to complete weekly bounties, open up chests on the new Nessus Barge area, or complete another activity (such as a strike or crucible match) after using a new consumable. All these paths will reward you with runes, which you slot into a new chalice given to you by Calus at the start of the season. Depending on what runes you have slotted on your chalice and where you’ve slotted them, you’ll receive a different reward.

The rolls you get from these items will be static, but the weapon or piece of gear you get will be static, letting you earn exactly what you want (though you’ll still be grinding out for the perfect roll on that weapon). “So, for example, if you wanted to earn a random roll of a ‘Beloved’ sniper rifle with handling as the Masterwork trait, you would use a Rune of Jubilation, any red rune, and any purple rune,” Bungie states. Which combinations lead to which weapons and traits will be a mystery, however, and it’ll be up to the community to figure them out.

You can also upgrade your Chalice using new Imperials (an item gained from completing weekly bounties and using consumables before certain activities. Upgrading the chalice allows you to tweak the specialization of an item, earn more runes from activities, and to earn you more powerful gear from the Menagerie itself.

Bungie also outlined some under-the-hood changes. Along with a new trio of pinnacle weapons for playing Crucible, strikes, and Gambit, non-exotic fusion rifles are getting a power buff in cooperative activities so they’re more viable. Swords are also getting more ammo to play with, as well as some damage and targeting buffs. The special weapon combo Sturm and Drang is also getting a buff to make it more powerful in a meta that prefers one primary and one special weapon. To celebrate these changes, new versions of classic swords, as well as Drang, will show up in the Season of Opulence.

  • Minecraft: Story Mode Being Delisted Later This Month

Minecraft: Story Mode Being Delisted Later This Month

In the wake of Telltale’s closure, its games have are being delisted from major online retailers. Not even its most popular and best-selling game, Minecraft: Story Mode, will escape this fate.

Mojang yesterday posted an official announcement that on June 25, both seasons of the game will disappear from online retailers. The company wasn’t able to find a way to keep the games for sale, it seems, and is advising players to download the games while they have the chance. “We’d recommend checking you have all the episodes downloaded!” This likely means that, if even if you’ve purchased either season, you will no longer be able to download it on the 25th.

While we weren’t too hot on the games by the end of their run, it’s still unfortunate fans will no longer be able enjoy them after June ends.

For more on Telltale’s closure, check out our extensive feature on how it happened.

  • Square Enix Has Just Filed A Trademark For Collection Of Mana In Europe

    A small but significant development.

Square Enix has been busy filing Final Fantasy and Mana trademarks for almost half of the year now and this latest one seems to be yet another sign the collection will be released here in the west. Following on from the “Collection of Mana” trademark in Japan in February, the company has now trademarked the same title for Europe.

This trademark has been previously linked to the Japan-exclusive, Seiken Densetsu Collection. This Switch release includes Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest), the sequel Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) and the third game Seiken Densetsu 3, which has never been localised. Perhaps we’ll hear more about this recently trademarked title at this year’s E3.

  • Mario Kart 8 Is Now Five Years Old

We’re ready for a new entry.

Sure, Mario Kart Tour is coming to mobile devices later this year, but right now, we’re still technically playing the same Mario Kart game we were on the Wii U five years ago. Yes, on 30th May 2014, Mario Kart 8 was released in North America and Europe on a Nintendo system that was at the time struggling to appeal to the masses.

The particular entry set itself apart from previous outings in the Mario Kart series with an all-new anti-gravity feature. The DLC was also a first for the series, adding in free Mercedes-Benz karts and two paid DLC packs later down the line – featuring more characters, vehicles and tracks. The 200cc was an added bonus. All of this paid off in the long-run, with Mario Kart 8 becoming the Wii U’s best-selling title and shifting more than eight million copies worldwide.
