  • Super Mario Maker 2 Comes to PS4, with a Helping Hand from LittleBigPlanet 3

    Claptrap9 does it again.

Dreams is all the rage right now when it comes to player creation, but don’t rule out Media Molecule’s previous franchise, LittleBigPlanet, just yet. Much like what he did with the original Super Mario Maker, prolific inventor Claptrap9 has re-made Super Mario Maker 2‘s creation suite in LittleBigPlanet 3.

It’s well worth checking out in the video above, courtesy of GameXplain, which takes a look at what’s possible within what is still a single level in the game. Sticking to the Super Mario World style, you can change the theme, place straight and sloped tiles, and deploy a number of classic Mario enemies. The physics aren’t quite the same as Nintendo’s favourite plumber, but it’s an impressive attempt from just a single person. Especially so when you consider that Claptrap9 is just 14 years old.

  • Fortnite Boss Is In Avengers: Endgame’s Re-Released Footage

Avengers: Endgame returned to theatres this weekend with bonus footage–and included in that is Epic Games boss Donald Mustard. Mustard, who is worldwide creative director at the Fortnite studio, said on Twitter that he appears for 3.2 seconds as a pony-tailed character.

Mustard shared a photo of himself in costume, chatting to Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. and Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch. A second photo posted by Mustard’s wife, Laura Mustard, shows them all hanging out with directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

Go see the re-release of Endgame this weekend on the biggest screen possible! Watch closely and you might just see 3.2 seconds of the greatest ponytail wizard ever wrecking baddies! pic.twitter.com/dDdV9kfzsK

    — Donald Mustard (@DonaldMustard) June 29, 2019

Love these guys! Thanks @Russo_Brothers for inviting us in to experience the making of #avengers with you. And fun dinner dates too! pic.twitter.com/GYsM0FTMg5

    — Laura Mustard (@lauramustard) June 29, 2019

In another tweet, Mustard says he thought about stealing his sling ring, but the film crew had security locked down. The Russo brothers are big fans of Fortnite; they’ve worn Fortnite t-shirts in various media appearances, and they even put a Fortnite scene in Endgame.

I was THIS close to stealing that Sling Ring but when ‘They’ came to take out the ponytail (which was a whole thing) there was a person making sure every piece of the costume was returned…

Endgame made a further $5.5 million in the US and Canada this weekend, and a few million more overseas, pushing its total lifetime haul to $2.76 billion. That’s about $27 million shy of Avatar’s overall all-time record; it’s a record that Endgame may never beat.

  • Halo: Reach PC Beta Begins, Immediately Gets “Illegally Distributed”

The first of the Halo: Reach PC betas began this weekend, and it took no time at all for people to do what people do. Tyler Davis of developer 343 Industries announced on Twitter that the first beta test, or “flight” in the Halo parlance, was “illegally distributed online” just after release.

Those who download or play the “illegal” copy of the game could have their accounts banned, while they might also be blocked from future beta tests.

According to Davis, this type of illegal activity is no surprise to 343.

“We knew this was something that likely would happen with our early flights,” he said. “We are prepared for how to handle it on our ends and this is just more so a reminder warning to people that if they circumvent it there are consequences.”

The first Halo: Reach PC beta began on June 28 and is scheduled to end on July 1. Another element of controversy surrounding the beta is that some people believe 343 gave preferential treatment to streamers or content creators in regards to access to the beta. This is not true, Davis said. Five out of six people granted access to the beta were chosen based on their PC hardware configurations, Davis said. The rest were content creators or “close friends” of 343 including professional gamers who have worked with Microsoft in the past. The terms of the Halo: Reach PC beta test state that footage cannot be streamed online.

5 out of every 6 people were NOT content creators my friend.

    — Tyler “Postums” Davis (@343Postums) June 29, 2019

Over time, 343 will expand the Halo: Reach for PC beta tests to include more people and provide access to different parts of the game. “We see the excitement and eagerness from the community to participate in these flights, and we hear you,” 343 said in a blog post. “Just know that we are going to continue to invite more over time and get as many people in and providing feedback as possible but it’s going to take some time so please hang in there.

The next beta test for Halo: Reach on PC will be released … at some point. “As stated many times before, it’s ready when it’s ready,” 343 said.

There will be beta tests for Halo: Reach on Xbox One as well, but there is no word on when they might begin. In all cases, you need to sign up for the Halo Insiders program for a shot at getting in.

Halo: Reach is coming to PC through The Master Chief Collection, which will be available on Steam and Windows. It’ll likely be a very long time before each title is released, as 343 is planning these betas for each title, spanning Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and finally Halo 4. Each game will be sold individually, while Xbox Game Pass subscribers on Xbox One or PC can get them all as they’re released at no extra cost.

Microsoft will also offer pre-release beta tests for Halo Infinite on Xbox and PC, but there is no word yet when they will begin.

  • Review: Danny Boyle & Richard Curtis’ ‘Yesterday’ is Awkwardly Sweet

Review: Danny Boyle & Richard Curtis’ ‘Yesterday’ is Awkwardly Sweet

    Yesterday Movie Review

Seen at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Who doesn’t love The Beatles? Wait – don’t answer that question. But seriously – The Beatles are the best and their music will live on forever because it’s so brilliant. Danny Boyle’s latest film Yesterday, featuring a screenplay written by Richard Curtis (of Love Actually, Pirate Radio, About Time), presents a crazy concept: what if suddenly The Beatles didn’t exist, no one know who they were, except for one guy. And that guy then played all their songs like they were his own and became famous because they’re still brilliant songs. That’s the setup for Yesterday, except, this is a Richard Curtis film – which means that, not only is it actually more of a sweet love story, but it’s really all about life itself and focusing on what matters rather than giving it up chasing fame and fortune and glory. Just not worth it. ›››

Vítej Zpět! The 54th Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia is Underway

    54th Karlovy Vary Film Festival

We’re back! We’re ready! And we want to watch some films! Kicking off this weekend is the 54th Karlovy Vary Film Festival, a wonderful festival that takes place in a quaint spa town (also known as Carlsbad) in Czechia – just a few hours drive west of Prague. This is my third year in a row returning to the festival, as it’s a quick trip down from Berlin and always a fun time. I’m happy to be back, happy to be here, ready to go. Always more to see, always more to discover. There’s an undeniable cinephile vibe, campsites for those who can’t afford hotels, the venues are vintage cinemas or old theater halls converted into temporary cinemas. Best of all, Karlovy Vary has a stellar line-up and that’s why I’m here – to catch up with and see lots of films. ›››

  • Upcoming Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Patch to Fix PS4 Save Corrupting Issues

All players to receive some free Wumpa Coins.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled launched just over a week ago on PlayStation 4, and while it’s generally a great remake, it’s had its fair share of issues. Perhaps the most notable problem is a nasty bug that’s seen many players lose their save data. According to Beenox, your save could corrupt “if the data for race ghosts in Time Trials becomes too large”. The developer is currently suggesting you avoid playing Time Trials altogether until a big new patch drops next week.

On 3rd July, a new update for the game will be made available. The patch will fix the aforementioned save data bug, along with other known issues. In addition, the update will introduce podium animations to online races if you place in the top three. More importantly, Wumpa Coins are going to be rebalanced, and there will be more post-race information on how the number earned is determined. Then there’s the first Grand Prix season, which brings a brand new track to the kart racer, as well as a new range of limited time cosmetic items and characters to unlock with Nitro Points. It’s a big update, in other words, that simultaneously adds new content, fixes issues, and makes some nice adjustments to the game.

  • Make Sure You Get The Right Kind Of Stylus For Super Mario Maker 2

Make Sure You Get The Right Kind Of Stylus For Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 came out yesterday, and you know what? We think it’s pretty good. One curious feature about the Switch sequel, however, is that when you have the console undocked, you can only use the touch screen to edit levels (yep, you can’t use the buttons and joysticks located on the sides of the thing). This might prompt you to use your sweaty, grubby digits, to build levels (you monster) or it might get you to purchase a stylus. If you’re inclined to do the latter, you should make sure it’s the right kind.

Unlike the Wii U, which used a resistive touch screen, the Switch uses a capacitive touch screen, like most phone screens do. Without boring you with the difference between the two, this means your Wii U stylus won’t work on your Switch, and you’ll have to buy a new one. You can hear us talk about it in the most recent episode of the Game Informer Show podcast below, timestamped for that specific discussion.

If you’re shopping for a new one, you can find a number of recommendations here (Thanks, ShackNews!). For more on Super Mario Maker 2, watch us play around with it for a while as we listen to trap remixes of Mario songs, or read our interview with Nintendo Legend Takashi Tezuka.
