‘Argo’ Fact vs. Fiction: The CIA Weighs In

    ARGO

Last week marked the 35th anniversary of the start of the Iran hostage crisis, perhaps best known to some moviegoers as “the thing that happens in Argo.” But while learning history by watching Hollywood thrillers may be enjoyable, it’s not really the best way to get an accurate account of events. So the CIA has taken the occasion to fact-check Ben Affleck‘s 2013 Best Picture winner via Twitter.

Some of their reveals may not surprise you (shocker: the Hollywood version is more dramatic) but overall it’s interesting to see how reality stacks up against fiction. Hit the jump to find out “what’s ‘reel’ vs. ‘real,’” as the CIA puts it.

It seems a safe bet that the “Canadian Caper,” as the rescue operation was dubbed, was plenty dramatic in real life. How could it not be? Nevertheless, it seems Affleck and his Argo team messed with some of the details to make the whole thing even more thrilling.

For one thing, it was never really just Tony Mendez against the world.

Reel #Argo: Only one CIA officer goes to Tehran to help exfiltrate the six American diplomats. pic.twitter.com/iFEcrBzlyb

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: Two CIA officers with notable forgery and exfiltration skills used their talents & knowledge to get the six out of Iran safely.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Nor did the CIA pull the plug on the operation at the last minute.

Reel #Argo: The mission is called off the night before they are scheduled to depart. pic.twitter.com/j4h0at57Sq

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: Carter gave approval prior to the CIA team flying to Tehran, Iran. The details were approved by policymakers in Ottawa and DC.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: The night before the exfiltration the team received final approval; last line in that approval: “See you later, exfiltrator.”

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

(You also don’t get a sense of how adorable the CIA’s sense of humor is, because no one in Argo says things like ”See you later, exfiltrator.”)

That scene where Mendez and the diplomats head out to “scout locations”? Never happened.

Reel #Argo: The CIA officer and the six diplomats go into town to scout locations. pic.twitter.com/2gx2sHjPBO

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: They never went to the marketplace to scout a location. The six hid in the Canadian’s homes for 79 days. pic.twitter.com/szTgt9stvb

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Nor did most of the problems depicted in the nail-biting climax of the film.

Reel #Argo: Airline tickets are not waiting at the counter and have to be rechecked before the tickets are authorized and confirmed.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: The Canadians had already purchased the tickets for the Americans. There were no issues at the counter nor the checkpoints.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Reel #Argo: The Americans are detained at the airport by security guards & a call is made back to “Studio Six” to verify their identity.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: It didn’t happen. An early flight was picked so airline officials would be sleepy & Revolutionary Guards would still be in bed.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: There was an hour long mechanical delay, other than that the escape could not have gone better. #nochase pic.twitter.com/a0TnVeBgBt

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: There was an hour long mechanical delay, other than that the escape could not have gone better. #nochase pic.twitter.com/a0TnVeBgBt

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

However, Argo did get one big moment right.

Reel #Argo: The plane clears Iranian air space and the Americans cheer and celebrate.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #Argo: That happened; there was even a round of celebratory Bloody Marys. #ThankYouCanada

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Well, for the most part. I don’t remember any Bloody Marys in Argo, though I’m sure you’ll set me straight if I’m wrong.

    And most importantly…

Real #Argo: All involved in the operation were innovative, brave, & creative. Thank you @BenAffleck for making a film that reflects this.

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

Real #ARGO: An exciting movie that it kept us on the edge of our seats. Letting @BenAffleck film here? Best bad idea we’ve had. #ThanksBen!

    — CIA (@CIA) November 7, 2014

There are a few more minor details you can read about at the CIA Twitter account, or you can get the full firsthand account from Mendez himself on the CIA websiteBetween this, Mark Zuckerberg’s criticism of The Social Network, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s nitpicks about Interstellar, the real lesson is clear: Don’t believe everything you see in the movies.

Resident Evil Publisher Says Creating New IP A "Priority"

    Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Building new franchises is a “priority” for Resident Evil and Dead Rising publisher Capcom, the Japanese game giant says. The English translation of a post-earnings Q&A session with Capcom management was published today, and one of the questions had to do with the company’s efforts to establish all-new franchises.

    Dead Rising 3

“Creating new intellectual property is one of our priorities,” Capcom said. “We allocate about 20 percent of our investments each fiscal year to intellectual property and are constantly working on developing new property.”

The publisher went on to explain that it doesn’t expect its new franchises to be runaway successes right away. “Producing an immediate hit from new intellectual property is not our objective,” the company added. “We want to build up this property in stages while incorporating the feedback and wishes of users.”

Capcom has more than 60 games that have sold over one million copies to date, which the publisher says puts it in a league all its own. One of the publisher’s biggest new franchises going forward is Deep Down, a free-to-play PlayStation 4 game being worked on by veteran producer Yoshinori Ono.

  • Telltale's Game of Thrones Revealed

    Telltale's Game of Thrones Revealed

After numerous teases, The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games on Tuesday finally announced some hard details about its upcoming Game of Thrones title, which will launch later this year.

First, the story details. Telltale’s Game of Thrones is based on HBO’s acclaimed series and will tell the story of House Forrester.

“Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom,” Telltale explained.

“Our game series is based on the world, characters, and events seen in HBO’s TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin’s books (A Song of Ice and Fire),” the studio added. “The events in our game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the TV show, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. You will visit familiar locations such as King’s Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.”

One of the locations you’ll visit in Telltale’s Game of Thrones title is Ironrath, an “imposing stronghold” where the Forresters dwell. The house words are “Iron from Ice,” which is said to embody their strong spirit. “Like the ironwood itself, the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscapes of the North only makes them stronger,” Telltale explains.

“Ironrath sits on the edge of the largest ironwood forest in Westeros, which has proven to be a strategic advantage for the House,” the developer goes on to say. “The trees are a valuable commodity; many of the best weapons, ships, and defensive structures include the use of ironwood. House Forrester controls the majority of the ironwood forests in the Wolfswood, much to the chagrin of their bitter rivals, House Whitehill.”

“You’re truly playing the Game of Thrones…where you win, or you die” — Telltale

The Forresters have not appeared in HBO’s Game of Thrones, but Telltale reminds us that they are canon to the fiction created by George R.R. Martin, as they did in fact appear in the book A Dance with Dragons.

In terms of gameplay, in Telltale’s Game of Thrones, you’ll play from five different perspectives. “Each character you play as is a member of House Forrester; either a direct family member, or a person in service to the House,” Telltale says. “Scattered across Westeros and Essos, each character will play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.”

Telltale went on to say that playing as five different characters will have a sweeping and dramatic effect on how the game plays out. The actions of one character can affect everyone else; and when you multiply this by five, “you’re truly playing the Game of Thrones…where you win, or you die,” Telltale says.

The developer also confirmed today that the first episode–of six total episodes in the first season–is called Iron From Ice. This episode is due to launch by the end of the year, and it will be available digitally across PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and iOS. Additional platforms will be announced later, Telltale said.

In addition to its Game of Thrones title, Telltale is working on Borderlands spinoff Tales from the Borderlands and a third season of The Walking Dead.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Rating Reveals New Playable Character

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Rating Reveals New Playable Character

The Entertainment Software Rating Board has posted its rating for 2015’s Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and, among other things, it reveals that Barry Burton may be a playable character.

As spotted by DualShockers, the rating mentions a “father searching for his daughter” as a playable character. He’s not mentioned by name in the rating, but one likely possibility is that the missing daughter is Moira Burton, one of the supporting characters in Revelations 2 alongside Claire Redfield.

This is unconfirmed for now, as Capcom hasn’t shed any further story details about the game. However, we do know that Revelations 2 will be released episodically, so it would be possible for Barry Button to be added to the game sometime after its initial release release.

Revelations 2’s ESRB rating also reveals that, as you might expect, the game will be rated M for Mature. “Combat is highlighted by screams of pain, realistic gunfire, and large blood-splatter effects,” the ESRB writes. “A handful of enemies are depicted with exposed organs, and one scene depicts an enemy having its hand cut off in slow-motion.”

Another scene in Revelations 2 will show a human character shooting herself in the head with a pistol, which results in a “large splatter of blood.” There will also be lots of swearing in Revelations 2, specifically words such as “f**k” and “sh*t.”

Revelations 2 is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more on the game, check out the video above and our previous coverage.

  • Super Smash Bros. 3DS Patch Tweaks Balance, Blocks Replays

Nintendo has announced a new patch for the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros., revealing that it will adjust game balance and fix bugs, but also block you from viewing previously saved replays.

Per a post on Nintendo’s website (translated by Kotaku), update 1.0.4. will adjust game balance and “fix various problems to make the game more enjoyable to play.” Nintendo has not yet detailed the gameplay balance tweaks and fixes, though that should come later through official patch notes.

Update 1.0.4. also impacts other areas of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. After you apply the update–which is required for online play–you won’t be able to play offline multiplayer with people running version 1.0.3 or lower. In addition, the update will block you from playing your replays.

According to another translation on Reddit, the new update for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS should be released sometime in November. For more on Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying.

  • PS4 Patch That Fixes Major Dragon Age: Inquisition Issue Should Hit Soon

PS4 Patch That Fixes Major Dragon Age: Inquisition Issue Should Hit Soon

A PlayStation 4 patch will be deployed soon to fix a major problem with Dragon Age: Inquisition on that platform, according to a new report. During its own testing, Polygon found that the game suffered from frequent freezing, which would lead to the entire PS4 getting locked up, only fixable with a hard reset.

In a few cases, these crashes even led to corrupted save files–a major issue when you consider Dragon Age: Inquisition takes dozens of hours to finish.

The issue does not stem from Dragon Age: Inquisition, but rather the PlayStation Network’s 2.0 update, which also impacted the Evolve beta and led to more issues with the PS4’s Rest Mode. EA told Polygon that it is aware of the issue and that Sony will release a PSN patch ahead of Dragon Age: Inquisition’s release on November 18 for consoles and PC.

Sony even sent Polygon a PS4 already loaded with the new PSN patch, and the update fixed the problem. This patch appears to be the 2.02 update that Sony announced last night.

“While unfortunate timing, we worked with Sony since the issue was discovered and are committed to ensuring it does not impact players by launch,” BioWare manager Aaryn Flynn said in a statement.

Dragon Age: Inquisition’s review embargo was lifted today. GameSpot scored the game a 9/10, with reviewer Kevin VanOrd saying the game “is a wonderful game and a lengthy pilgrimage to a magical world with vital thematic ties to one we already know.”

Far Cry 4 Map Leaks – Report

THIS POST CONTAINS POTENTIAL FAR CRY 4 SPOILERS

One week ahead of Far Cry 4‘s release on November 18, what appears to be the game’s map has appeared on Reddit, showing off the various regions, wildlife, and more from the world of Kyrat.

Featured on the map are names of regions and a key for where to find all manner of animals, including elephants, wild pigs, and honey badgers, among others.

It is unclear how the Reddit user was able to obtain the map, or if indeed it is legitimate. We have contacted Far Cry 4 publisher Ubisoft for comment.

For comparison’s sake, check out Far Cry 3’s map at the game’s Wikia page. Ubisoft has said that Far Cry 4 may not be larger than Far Cry 3 in terms of sheer size, though Far Cry 4 will offer more depth and breadth as it relates to in-game activities.

Far Cry 4 launches next Tuesday for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.
