Bryan Cranston is bringing a shameful nexus of entertainment and politics to life once again in the movie Trumbo.
Following the conclusion of Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has been seen in Godzilla, and his biggest achievement has probably been a portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson in the play All the Way. That led to an HBO movie version of the play in which Cranston again plays the title role. But that’s not his only stint playing a significant figure from 20th Century American history. Cranston has also starred in Trumbo, a biopic about blackslited novelist and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Below, check out the first picture of Cranston in the film.

EW, clearly, is the source of the pic.
Jay Roach, who has his own career making films for HBO, directed the film, which “tells the story of the writer’s stand against the communist witch-hunt at the height of the cold war, his professional exile, which included an 11-month stint in prison for contempt of Congress, and his battle with powerful red-hating gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren).”
Dalton Trumbo was an accomplished novelist (his anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun is probably still his most famous book) and screenwriter who had been a member of the US Communist party during WWII. At that point, Communism wasn’t a big deal because we were friends with the Soviets. And people did what young people do: experimented with affiliations as we entered a new phase of our national culture.
But when anti-Communist fervor ignited in the late ’40s, Dalton Trumbo was one of a number of Hollywood figures called to testify in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Great pressure was exerted on those brought before HUAC to name other Communists and sympathizers. Turbo refused, and he was jailed and also blacklisted from working in Hollywood. He wrote a couple scripts under pseudonyms, and Kirk Douglas helped break the blacklist in 1960 when he championed Trumbo as author of Spartacus.
So Trumbo covers that particularly tumultuous period in the author’s life, which also happens to be a uniquely shameful period in American History.
In addition to Cranston, Trumbo features Diane Lane as Trumbo’s wife, Cleo; Elle Fanning as their daughter Nikola, and John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., and Alan Tudyk.
Trumbo shot in New Orleans, where it just wrapped. We should see it in 2015.

Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity did a fantastic job of showing how isolated one might feel in space. It also really pushed the emotions because of Steven Price‘s Oscar-winning score. Space is a silent vacuum, however, and to give Gravity fans a wholly new experience, an upcoming re-release of the Blu-ray will have a “Silent Space” audio track to give the viewer a sense of what the events of the movie might actually sound like in space. Read more about the Gravity silent space version below.
Thanks to The Film Stage for the heads up on this awesome feature. Here’s the cover and promotion material for the new Diamond Luxe version of Gravity, which hits Blu-ray February 10.
A few thoughts on the Gravity silent space version. I’m curious how much work and thought was put into this feature. What we hear what we don’t hear. Did Alfonso Cuaron supervise? It has to be different enough that it doesn’t duplicate just hitting the mute button on your current Blu-ray and turning on the subtitles. Also, as unique as this feature may be, Price’s score is so good, removing it would certainly remove some of what makes Gravity so emotional and exciting.
As if that argument needed more evidence, this edition will also have a full Dolby Atmos sound mix, something we know for a fact Cuaron worked on. Still, the “Silent Space” edition is just a fun, Blu-ray gimmick, like the version of Memento you can watch in order of the jokeless version of 22 Jump Street. It’s a fun addition for fans who’ve watched a movie a million times and just want some kind of extra thing to enjoy and talk about.
If you already have the Gravity Blu-ray, is this a version something you’ll be picking up? As someone who already owns the 3D Blu-ray and doesn’t have a particularly well balanced sound system, I’d be interested to pop this in at a friends house but that’s about it.
What are your thoughts on the Gravity silent space version?

Dwayne Johnson recently tweeted a photo of him reading the script for his next movie. He described it as a “big action comedy” and said his co-star would soon be revealed. That’s now happened. It’s none other than Kevin Hart, the current go-to second lead in big comedies (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Get Hard, The Wedding Ringer). They’ll co-star in a buddy action comedy called Central Intelligence, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re The Millers).
Variety broke the news of the film which will be distributed by New Line. Here’s how they describe the plot:
The story begins with a class reunion approaching, as a former high school sports star turned accountant (Hart) is contacted by a classmate (Johnson) who was bullied and humiliated back in the day. The “loser” that the accountant remembers is now a CIA contract killer who ropes him into helping foil a plot to sell classified military secrets.
The original screenplay was by ?Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen but Sean Anders and John Morris did another draft and Thurber did one as well. Ed Helms was originally attached to the script, but now he’ll executive produce.
Here are some of the tweets Johnson and Hart exchanged over the weekend in anticipation of this announcement:
Hardest workin’ man in the room, talkin’ to… the other hardest workin’ man in the room… http://t.co/Fdfq8ZE5YM
— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) November 8, 2014
I see you big fella….The world is not ready for what we are about to hit them with @TheRock ……Let’s … http://t.co/qp4uOq7To1
— Kevin Hart (@KevinHart4real) November 8, 2014
Fired up reading the script of my next movie – Big action comedy. Surprise announcement this week of… http://t.co/Opx4P2519x
— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) November 9, 2014
Then, the official announcement:
He’s The Golden Jet… and I’m Bob. And the crazy ass story of me and @KevinHart4real begins…http://t.co/Xh3yRoRWxt #CentralIntelligence
— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) November 11, 2014
The idea for Central Intelligence seems pretty familiar, but I’m all for Johnson doing comedies. He’s exhibited some of his comedic chops in his action movies, but his personality is tailor made for a comedy with action elements. Add Hart into the mix and you can just imagine the crazy energy and chemistry those two huge A-personalities have.
Central Intelligence is aiming to shoot in the Spring 2015, which would suggest a Spring 2016 release date. Rawson Marshall Thurber has been mentioned as up for a bunch of projects since his huge success with We’re The Millers, a sequel for which is currently in development. But it looks like this will be his follow up.
What do you think of a Dwayne Johnson Kevin Hart action comedy?

If you’re starting to wonder if Johnny Depp is picking all of his movies based on how ridiculous they let him look, Mortdecai won’t do much to dispel that notion. Depp leads the comedy caper as “debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai,” who’s tasked with tracking down a painting something something Nazi gold. It doesn’t really matter, because the whole movie is really just Depp’s excuse to sport a fake mustache/accent combo that rivals the one in Tusk. Watch the latest Mortdecai trailer after the jump.
Yahoo premiered the new Mortdecai trailer.
Depp has always been good at playing extreme characters, but lately it seems like that’s all he’s interested in doing. The few minutes of Transcendence in which he had to play a relatively normal human being feature some of the least convincing acting I’ve seen onscreen all year. (The rest of it was also very unconvincing but for different reasons.) Personally I think Depp’s schtick is getting tiresome, but your mileage may vary.
If you’re still into it, Mortdecai does boast a solid cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Goldblum, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, and Olivia Munn. And if you’re not, well, there’s always next year’s Black Mass. That one does have Johnny Depp sporting a fake bald head and (presumably) a Boston accent, but at least he’s not sporting fake claws, white pancake makeup, or a dead bird on his head.
Mortdecai opens January 23, 2015. David Koepp (Premium Rush) directs.
Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

In May, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 got engaged. Now, it’s hired its wedding planner and found a venue. The sequel to the monster hit 2002 comedy will be distributed by Universal and directed by Kirk Jones, who did Waking Ned Devine and Nanny McPhee. No release date has been set but Nia Vardalos will return to star and write the screenplay. Read more about My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 below.
Variety broke the news about My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 getting a distributor and director. All that’s needed now is a release date, then it’s full speed to the alter.
When the project was initially announced, the plot was teased as involving some kind of family secret and a new wedding that’ll be he “bigger and fatter” than the last one. Vardalos also hinted at her intentions with writing the film:
Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.
The 2002 original cost $5 million and became an international phenomenon. It grossed $241 million in the U.S. alone, plus another $127 million across the globe. According to Box Office Mojo, those numbers make it the highest grossing romantic comedy in history. And it holds that title by a sizable margin.
And while this is technically “Part 2,” the series actually got a follow up in 2003. The film was spun off into a seven-episode show called My Big Fat Greek Life where all the lead actors (save for Corbett) returned and reprised their roles. There’s no word if that show will have any effect on the movie, but you’d probably imagine it’ll be wisely swept under the rug.
Are you, or your mom, looking forward to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a big hit this summer, grossing over $200 million in the US and over $700 million worldwide. That was good for Fox because they dated its follow-up months before release, setting its date for July 29, 2016. Matt Reeves will be back to direct and, of course, Andy Serkis will return as Caesar for the third Planet of the Apes prequel.
Though Dawn definitely teased what could happen next in the series, these new Planet of the Apes films have been anything but predictable. So while promoting the Blu-ray release of the recent film, Reeves and Serkis both dropped a few teases about the third film. Reeves described Caesar on a trajectory towards Moses-like reverence and Serkis said there’s war. Read more about the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sequel.
First up, Reeves said the following about how the third film is going to fit into the larger context of Planet of the Apes:
[We want] the story to be able to connect from the human to the ape world. So first one, [Rise of the Planet of the Apes] is this sort of how [Caesar] goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary. In Dawn, he rose to the occasion of becoming a leader, a great leader in really challenging difficult times. The notion of what we’re after in the third is continue that trajectory to how he becomes the seminal figure in ape history and almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses of sorts, a kind of mythic ascension. We’re trying to play out those themes and try to explore it in this universe of exploring human nature under the guise of apes.
He expanded a bit on that in an interview with Collider:
We are outlining the story right now, and it’s pretty exciting. I’m pretty excited about it. I think for me the idea is that—somebody called this the ‘Caesar cycle’ of these films and I loved that. I thought, ‘That’s exactly right.’ He is this unique character in that he sort of was raised as human but he’s an ape, and he wasn’t part of either.
And, of course, the events of the second film will have a direct effect:
This situation is exactly what he was trying to avoid. The oncoming war is what Dawn was all about avoiding and it wasn’t avoided, so what does that mean to him as a character and how will he lead his people through this—or his apes through this?
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Serkis tagged that sentiment of how the results of Dawn will influence the next movie:
The ape community has fallen apart. There’s potential war. He’s going to have to lead the apes in darker times. I think it’s going to be very powerful.
So what will the film be called? Reeves isn’t saying, but he did tease this talking to Collider:
I’ll say this as a tease: it might be one word shorter.
Only one word shorter? I assume the first “Of” will go to something along the lines of Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Maybe like “Forming The Planet of the Apes?” I guess we’ll find out next year.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits Blu-ray December 2. The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sequel hits theaters July 29, 2016.
