Three Things To Try Tonight That Aren't Video Games

    1. I used to be one of those exhausting people that kept up with music blogs and checked out new bands, and then I got a life. However, the new records from Mitski and Car Seat Headrest are both pretty good. Mitski’s Puberty 2 is beautiful, funny and sad, while Car Seat Headrests’s Teens of Denial is more detached and ironic. If you’re not into sad person indie rock, I also am loving this song from Tinashe. The video is so fun!

  • Quick Teaser Trailer for Joel Potrykus' Film 'The Alchemist Cookbook'

Quick Teaser Trailer for Joel Potrykus' Film 'The Alchemist Cookbook'

    The Alchemist Cookbook Trailer

“Feeling down?” Oscilloscope Labs has debuted the first quick teaser trailer for an indie film called The Alchemist Cookbook, from unique filmmaker Joel Potrykus, who last made the cult indie hit Buzzard starring Joshua Burge. This film is about a young outcast named Sean, played by Ty Hickson, who is holed up in a trailer in the woods with “The Alchemist Cookbook” and his cat. After going too far with one of the recipes, he “awakens something far more sinister and dangerous”. The poster gives you a little hint at what that might be since this teaser doesn’t offer much to work with. If you’re curious about this one, have a look. ›››

First Trailer for Adaptation of Story 'Unless' Starring Catherine Keener

    Unless Trailer

“How did this part of the story happen?” The first trailer has debuted for an indie drama called Unless, adapted from Carol Shields’ novel of the same name. The story is about a successful, usually happy writer who struggles with her daughter’s choice to drop out of college and live on the streets. Catherine Keener stars, along with Hannah Gross as her daughter Norah living on the streets. The full cast includes Matt Craven, Chloe Rose, Abigail Winter, Brendan Coyle and Hanna Schygulla. The film will premiere at TIFF this fall, which is a good sign this might have something to it. It looks quite emotional and heartfelt. ›››

  • No Man's Sky Dev "Working Hard" to Resolve PC Issues

Following the launch of long-awaited a hugely hyped space game No Man’s Sky on Friday for PC, people quickly reported performance issues. After initially responding to these issues, developer Hello Games has now provided another update on the subject.

“Whilst many people are enjoying No Man’s Sky, we are tracking several issues, and we’re working hard to resolve them as quickly as possible,” Hello Games said in a Steam forum post. Here is a rundown, as written by Hello Games:

    • We have updated our support page with some common issues and workaroundshttp://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/pc-support/
    • We have updated the auto response from support@hellogames.co.uk to help suggest common fixes, and help gather better info
    • We have filed tickets for everyone who has mailed support and are responding to them in turn.
    • We have gotten back to a lot of people already, who were trying to run the game significantly below min spec.
    • Additionally your bug reports have shown us a handful of key issues we are working to resolve

The post, released late last night, also mentions that Hello Games is “pulling an allnighter” to fix as many issues as soon as possible.

The three most common crash scenarios, according to Hello Games, are these:

    • Running the game with an Intel card. This is not supported
    • No Man’s Sky is an OpenGL 4.5 game, and requires latest drivers on most cards, please update
    • VC++ Redist 2010 was not included by default. We have updated in a patch, please restart

Hello Games added that it plans to create an “experimental branch” for No Man’s Sky that includes hotfixes for the most common known issues, which are:

    • Shader Cache issue – means that framerate is initially stuttering on some cards. Whilst it resolves itself over time (~1 hour of play), we will fix this issue in a patch.
    • SSE 4 – for CPUs that do not support SSE 4, it is causing the game to crash on boot (some of these area technically below min spec, but we don’t want it to crash!)
    • Mouse controls jitter on foot – this caused by a combination of certain resolution and GFX card. A fix is in progress.

If the problem you’re facing is not covered in the post, you can reach Hello Games at this address: support@hellogames.co.uk.

No Man’s Sky’s PC release was apparently very rough. Yesterday, Steam Reviews stood at “mostly negative”; today, that has been downgraded to “mixed” after close to 22,500 reviews.

For more on No Man’s Sky, check out GameSpot’s review. We called it a “massive machine with broken and missing parts.”

  • Awesome Art Picks: Stranger Things, Black Cat, Wonder Woman, and More

Awesome Art Picks: Stranger Things, Black Cat, Wonder Woman, and More

Each week we search and gather up the coolest comic book art you won’t see in actual comics. The reason you won’t is because professional artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs, and Tumblrs. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out. This is a way to see the artists working on one book draw characters from other comics or publishers.

Ryan Ottley posted his finished Stranger Things piece on his Tumblr. It’ll also be included as a mini-print when you pre-order his new artbook Violence & Pigtails here.

  • Here’s When Path of Exile’s New Expansion Launches

Here’s When Path of Exile’s New Expansion Launches

The latest expansion for Grinding Gear Games’ role-playing game Path of Exile, Atlas of Worlds, will launch on September 2, the developer revealed today.

According to developers, Atlas of Worlds is a reimagining of Path of Exile’s current end game. Using the game’s map generator and crafting system, players can change the properties of the maps they generate and the content they’ll find therein. The expansion includes 30 more areas and 19 new bosses, as well as a refreshed, higher-quality look for all existing older maps.

These new maps aren’t just random areas, either. Grinding Gear Games has added narrative content, wrapping the reason and purpose behind these new areas into a larger new story.

Areas offer higher difficulty as well. Areas around the outskits of the new map are expected to offer content around level 28, while levels closer to the middle of the map–and the final bosses–will include content around level 86.

According to Grinding Gear Games, the studio found that the longer players spent time in the game, the less variety they had because they were grinding away at the same small number of high-level maps. The ability to customize maps and upgrade them to higher levels is meant to alleviate this. The higher the map level, the higher the level of the items you’ll find; so if you’re looking for items for minions, you may want to spend some time on upgraded maps in the graveyard area, as that’s where you’ll find the minion gear.

Grinding Gear has also worked to improve the performance of Path of Exile with this patch. According to the developer, the game now runs at twice the speed, with double the frame rate for when there are many enemies on screen.

Path of Exile was released in October 2013 after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

  • Here's Another Look at Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Temple of Time

Nintendo today posted a new video from upcoming role-playing game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Published on its Facebook page, the video provides another look at the game’s Temple of Time.

Nintendo captioned the video: “Does this seem familiar?” Check out the video below.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was originally scheduled to launch in 2016, but is now set to launch on both Wii U and NX in 2017.

Although a specific release date has not been announced for the game, the NX release date has been confirmed as being in March 2017. It may be that Breath of the Wild will be available as a launch title for it, though this is not confirmed. A recent report claimed Breath of the Wild, as well as new Mario and Pokemon games, will be available for NX within six months of its release.

Nintendo recently stated that Breath of the Wild needs to sell 2 million copies to become profitable, though there are still some unanswered questions about that statement. The last new console entry in the Legend of Zelda series was Skyward Sword for the Wii, which has sold more than 3.4 million copies.
