There are many different techniques that filmmakers can use to enhance their storytelling, add or alter our emotions, or convey a message without dialogue. One of those techniques is the use of silence, or obstructed dialogue, or putting music or sound over talking to convey a feeling. Editor David Verdeure made an outstanding video essay for Fandor called “When Words Fail” looking at this technique, and providing a number of different examples. “The reasons for the use of this stylistic stratagem are diverse—they range from comedic to horrific, from wistful to suspenseful.” The video tries to give some potential explanation for each scene, but it’s also cool to see these moments and make whatever you want of them in your own mind. ›››
“What are we up against?” Wow! Want to get a glimpse at just how epic and gnarly the new Godzilla from Japan is? A new international trailer from the Philippines has arrived online featuring tons of extra footage of the giant lizard monster attacking and destroying cities in Godzilla Resurgence, or Shin Godzilla. We posted the full Japanese trailer for this a few months ago and it finally showed Godzilla in all his glory, but this trailer shows off even more of his deadly abilities, including some crazy destructive lasers coming out of his back. Starring Jun Kunimura, Shin’ya Tsukamoto, Satomi Ishihara and Hiroki Hasegawa. This definitely has a cheesy side to it, but I feel like it’s going to be so much fun to watch. Maybe? We’ll see. ›››
“It’s not because we wear skirts, it’s because we wear glasses.” Fox has released a trailer for a film called Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore (Ted) Melfi, a drama about the many African-American women who worked at NASA. The story focuses specifically on three of them, known as “human computers”, who helped worked with NASA in calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit (in 1962), and guaranteeing his safe return. The full cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell, among others. This actually looks pretty damn good, more than anything it’s great to see this story about these wonderful women shown on the big screen with so much attention to detail. Take a look. ›››

Square Enix is positioning World of Final Fantasy as something of a gateway title for those unfamiliar with the mega-franchise while keeping its appeal with longtime fans. While it will star new characters, it is also chocked full of familiar faces from the series.
The game is set in the land of Grimoire, where all the Final Fantasy characters live. The two main characters shown in the announcement trailer–Rain and her little brother–are venturing into the world to battle against and befriend monsters. These creatures have been pulled from all previous Final Fantasy games, giving players a chance to do battle with cute chibi versions of Behemoths and even cuter chibi chocobos. The monsters featured in The World of Final Fantasy will come from the entire series history, including spinoff titles like Final Fantasy Tactics and Crystal Chronicles.
The No. 2 movie this past weekend was the animated comedy Sausage Party, which cooked up $33.6 million for its opening. According to Deadline, this raunchy comedy “stole a big chunk” of Suicide Squad‘s holdover crowd during late-evening hours.
Additionally, it probably didn’t help that American Olympian Michael Phelps swam in his final races this weekend, which may have kept some from going to the movies.

Pokemon Snap, the acclaimed Pokemon spinoff originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, is coming to the Wii U virtual console in Europe, Nintendo has announced.
It will launch this coming Thursday, August 18, Nintendo of Europe said on Twitter. Pricing was not announced.
Pokemon Snap sends players on a virtual trip to Pokemon Island where they go on a safari to take pictures of Pokemon in their natural habitat. Things like weather effects, environmental considerations, and the shyness of some Pokemon makes snapping pictures trickier than you’d imagine.
After snapping shots of Pokemon in the wild, players send them to Professor Oak, who judges the photos on the basis of size, pose, technique, and the number of creatures captured.
According to GamingBolt, the Steam Database entry for Nuka-World reveals that the content will be around 3.66 GB. By comparison, the Far Harbor expansion was around 2.7 GB.
As GamingBolt mentions, file size is not always directly related to game content. The entirety of the recently released No Man’s Sky, for example, is smaller than a Halo 5: Guardians update.
The file sizes mentioned above are for the PC version of Nuka-World.
Bethesda has stated Fallout 4’s Nuka-World expansion is coming in August, but a specific release date has not been announced. We’re now about half-way through the month, so an announcement should come soon.
Nuka-World, which is set in a post-apocalyptic amusement park, adds new quests, weapons, and more. Here is the official description:
“Take a trip to Nuka-World, a vast amusement park now a lawless city of Raiders. Explore an all-new region with an open wasteland and park zones like Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom, and the Galactic Zone. Nuka-World features new quests, Raiders, weapons, creatures, and more. Enjoy the ride!”
Fallout 4’s DLC so far has included Automatron (March 2016), Wasteland Workshop (April 2016), Far Harbor (May 2016), Contraptions Workshop (June 2016), and Vault-Tec Workshop (July 2016). All of that, as well as Nuka-World, is included with the $50 Fallout 4 DLC Pass.
We would expect Bethesda Game Studios to continue to support Fallout 4 after August with gameplay updates for tuning and bug fixes. But as for what’s next? Fallout 4 director Todd Howard has talked about some “big and crazy” projects, so maybe it’s one of those.
During the early 1990’s an arcade machine would grace the gaming world with a new style of sports title different than anything that had been seen before. It was a fast paced physical basketball game that anyone could pick up and play. The game was NBA Jam and the year was 1993. Midway had created a masterpiece and Acclaim did a great job of porting it over to home consoles shortly after. Acclaim was not known for creating great games but its arcade ports were usually on point. Although NBA Jam started out in the Arcades, in America the Sega Genesis port was king. This was probably due to the fact that the Genesis was always known for its great arcade conversions.
The 2016 edition of the The International, DOTA 2’s biggest tournament of the year, was held in Seattle over the weekend. It made a lot of people very, very rich (or, as this list of esport’s top earners shows, richer).
