Killzone Dev Talks About Leaving Franchise Behind for "Radically Different" Horizon

Some may have been surprised when Killzone developer Guerrilla Games announced PS4 action-RPG Horizon: Zero Dawn, a wildly different-looking game in a new genre than the shooter series. Now, the studio’s manager has spoken about saying goodbye to Killzone and hello to Zero Dawn.

“It’s really exciting,” Hermen Hulst told Game Informer. “It is fantastic when you’ve worked on a franchise for more than a decade–actually, in my case, it’s been almost 15 years–to do something that’s so radically different and at the same time kind of stands on the shoulders of what we made before.”

Though the Killzone and Zero Dawn franchises are obviously completely different in terms of look and feel, Guerrilla does see some similarities when it comes to design.

“We really love making fluid, awesome combat–and we’re trying to do that again,” he said about Killzone and Zero Dawn. “We’re really into making fantastic science-fiction worlds–and we’re doing that again. There are a ton of similarities, but I think more importantly this is really fresh.”

Hulst went on to say that Killzone is beautiful in its own “gritty” way. But Zero Dawn is “beautiful in kind of a majestic way,” he said. If you’ve seen any of the game’s trailers, you might agree.

In the Killzone franchise, it’s all about surviving and escaping a harsh world. For Zero Dawn, Guerrilla wanted to make a game that draws you in and asks you to explore every corner.

“A world that you want to be in instead escape away from,” Hulst said.

Game director Mathijs de Jonge added in another Game Informer video interview that Guerrilla prototyped more than two-dozen ideas for what it would make after PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall. The studio put the ideas into an Excel spreadsheet and asked staffers to rate the options on what excites them the most and what is most risky.

“It was certainly not the least risky, but definitely the one where everybody that saw the original pitch, they said, ‘Well, we gotta make this,’” Hulst added, according to VideoGamer.com. “This is maybe incredibly risky but it’s something that is so radically different and so inspiring that it actually took me very little time to convince the team to jump behind it. We wanted to make [Zero Dawn] straight away.”

A second project that was prototyped was cancelled, de Jonge said, though he never specified what it was. One possibility is that it was a new Killzone title, though this is not confirmed.

Watch the full video interviews here and here to learn a lot more about the origins of Zero Dawn.

Though no new Killzone games have been announced, Guerrilla has said it loves the franchise and is not ruling out returning to it someday.

Zero Dawn was originally expected to debut in 2016, but was delayed to February 28, 2017. A new trailer was released at TGS last week and can be seen here.

  • Watch First Resident Evil: Vendetta Movie Trailer

Following the new images for CG movie Resident Evil: Vendetta that came online last week, its producers have now published the first trailer for the 2017 film.

The movie is only confirmed for Japan so far, so that’s likely why the trailer features Japanese text. But there’s a good amount of universal items like action and zombies, too. Take a look (via Kotaku):

Vendetta, which was announced in 2015 and is due out in spring 2017, is written by Makoto Fukami (Psycho-Pass) and directed by Takanori Tsujimoto (Hard Revenge Milly, Ultraman X). The Grudge creator Takashi Shimizu serves as executive producer on the project, and long-time Resident Evil developer Hiroyuki Kobayashi is on board as executive supervisor. Kobayashi has also served as producer on the first two animated Resident Evil movies, Degeneration and Damnation, in addition to some of the live-action films.

2017 will see another Resident Evil movie in The Final Chapter, which is the aptly named finale to the live-action Resident Evil series starring Milla Jovovich. It comes to theaters in January, the same month Resident Evil 7 releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

We recently talked to Matt Mercer, the voice of Leon in Vendetta, about Resident Evil 7 and how the game is “scaling back” on classic cameos.

Lois Lane Is Missing But Another Lois Shows Up at the Daily Planet

There’s a lot of confusion going on in Superman’s corner of the DC Universe. In 2011, the DCU was rebooted after the Flashpoint story arc under the “New 52” banner. The characters were a little younger, and some aspects of their past were changed a little. The New 52 version of Superman died a few months ago, but the pre-Flashpoint version of Superman ended up in the current timeline with his wife, Lois Lane, and their son, Jon, after the Convergence story arc.

When the New 52 Superman died, some energy was expelled and passed through Lois and Lana Lang. This resulted in both gaining superpowers. They decided to honor the memory of the fallen Superman by operating as Superwoman.

While both Lois and Lana are trying to figure out how their different powers work, Lois faced a deadly threat that seemingly resulted in her death. Lana was the only one that witnessed Lois’ demise, and the rest of the world was left wondering where Lane has been.

This is where the pre-Flashpoint version comes in. As a reporter in her own timeline, she knows she’s disappeared from time to time while chasing down a story. She decides to try to figure out what happened. Her plan involves going to the Daily Planet and posing as the missing Lois. Since she’s a little older, will it be possible for her to pull off the act?

DC Comics has given us an exclusive first look at Action Comics #965. Here’s what happens when Lois walks into the Planet.

Luckily for Lois, it looks like everyone believes she’s the Lois they all know. Why else would they think otherwise? There is still a lot about this world Lois doesn’t know about. She’ll have to stay on her toes while she tries to figure out what happened to the other Lois. It’s possible she’s dead, but characters rarely remain so in comics. Then again, could the DCU handle having two Lois Lanes running around?

“Lois Lane: Back at the Planet” starts in Action Comics #965, on sale October 12.

Mad Max Fury Road Prequel Could Start Production This Year–Report

In the wake of Mad Max: Fury Road‘s release last year, there were numerous rumours that director George Miller was planning a follow-up. There has been little news since, but now it has been reported that pre-production work on a prequel has begun in Australia.

According to the Herald Sun, Miller is gearing up make a film centered on Charlize Theron’s Fury Road character. The story reads: “Pre-production is gearing up on the multi-million-dollar action-packed Warner Bros franchise, with NSW’s Broken Hill Studios Miller’s first choice for shooting, which could start as soon as later this year.

“Mad Max Fury Road was plagued by delays when extended rain turned the desert green and the uber-director had to move location to Namibia. The [new] script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Oscar-winner Charlize Theron.”

Neither Miller or Warner have commented on this story.

Mad Max: Fury Road also starred Tom Hardy and Nicholas Hoult. It made $378.4 million worldwide, and was nominated for ten Oscars, more than any Australian film in history.

Although Miller has spoken about making a fifth Mad Max film, he has repeatedly stressed that he would need a break before making another.

“We shot Fury Road for eight months–that’s a lot,” he told Top Gear last year. “Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it’s very wearing. We’ve got two more planned, but at some point in the future.”

Ten Years Later, Okami Is Still Great

One day, my 8th grade art teacher decided to try and teach his class sumi-e, the Japanese art of Ink wash painting. It’s a minimalist style with a long history and subtle philosophy behind it, not exactly the best thing to try and show a bunch of distracted adolescent kids.
