Quick Thoughts On Eldritch Horror, An Appropriately Stressful Board Game

Last night a buddy and I made the possibly ill-advised decision to learn and play a game of Eldritch Horror in a single evening. Once we finally figured out how to play, we had a lot of fun. We even managed to stop the coming of Azathoth and save the world.

TIFF 2016: Natalie Portman is Exceptional in Pablo Larraín's 'Jackie'

    Jackie Review

It’s never a good time to lose anyone close to you and even worse when the whole world is watching. Every move is watched and scrutinized regardless of context and it’s up to you to put your personal feelings aside and keep moving forward. The astounding new film Jackie focuses on one of the biggest icons of class and style in America’s history, Jackie Kennedy, and as played by a never-better Natalie Portman we witness the private grief that is human but rarely seen in public. Jackie is the English-language debut of Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (of No, The Club and this year’s Neruda) and as the story begins we are dropped right in the middle of the chaotic aftermath following JFK’s assassination on November 22, 1963. ›››

  • Watch the Latest Matt Damon-Jimmy Kimmel Fake Feud Unfold

The hilarious Matt Damon-Jimmy Kimmel fake feud has been going on for years and the newest chapter has now been told. Last night during the Emmys, Damon interrupted host Kimmel after the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series went to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, not Kimmel’s own Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Damon, who emerged eating an apple (you can probably guess the payoff), roasted Kimmel for being a loser. “You must be really bummed out,” Damon says to Kimmel. “This is so humiliating; you lost and now you gotta stand out here for the rest of the night in front of everybody–when you probably just want to go home and curl up and cry.” Damon then asks the crowd to give Kimmel a big round of a applause for being a loser.

Walking off stage, Damon gets in one more jab, “Oh, hey Jimmy, tell your mom I like them apples,” referencing Damon’s famous line from Good Will Hunting.

The fake feud between Damon and Kimmel started when Kimmel would end his late night show by apologizing to Damon for running out of time to interview him, even though he wasn’t there. Then, when Damon finally appeared on his show and sat down, Kimmel said it again, and Damon went (fake) ballistic.

Kimmel and Damon have played up the squabble for years, including with a silly couples counseling video and attack ads. Damon’s friend Ben Affleck even snuck Damon into Kimmel’s shown once in his shirt.

  • Game of Thrones is Now the Most Successful Show in the History of the Emmy Awards

Game of Thrones is Now the Most Successful Show in the History of the Emmy Awards

Game of Thrones was the big winner at last night’s Emmy awards. Not only did it take home three of the big prizes, it now stands as the most decorated series in the history of the TV awards.

    3131512-it2.jpg

HBO’s hit fantasy show has now won a total of 38 Emmys since 2011. That’s one more than the previous record-holder, the sitcom Frasier, collected, and the most since the awards ceremony began in 1949.

Game of Thrones won Best Drama Series, Best Writing for a Drama Series, and Best Directing for a Drama Series, plus another nine in the technical categories that were handed out last week. After the ceremony, showrunner David Benioff said, via Sky News: “We love Frasier and he had a long run and we’re sure someone will come along and take it from us.

“We just hope it doesn’t happen until we’re all dead.”

The other big winners included stars Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).

The true crime drama The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won five awards last night, including Best Limited Series, Best Writing for a Limited Series, and Best Actor and Actress for a Limited Series, for Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson respectively.

  • Game of Thrones Showrunners Say No to Prequel, as Creator Teases More Stories

Game of Thrones Showrunners Say No to Prequel, as Creator Teases More Stories

When HBO’s Game of Thrones wraps up after Season 8, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will say goodbye to the series, though they expect the franchise to live on without them.

Benioff was asked by reporters backstage at the Emmys last night if he and Weiss would consider making a Game of Thrones prequel. Benioff said that he and Weiss don’t plan on working on Game of Thrones after Season 8. As for whether or not there is a prequel series, that’s more of a question for creator George R.R. Martin.

    3131506-game.jpg

“You might want to ask George about that,” Benioff said, according to EW. “It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.”

Martin himself teased that more Game of Thrones stories could happen, including potentially a prequel.

“Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history–everything that led up to Game of Thrones–so there’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more.”

Don’t get too excited for a Game of Thrones prequel at this stage, however. Martin pointed out that Game of Thrones still has two more seasons, while he is still finishing two more books. A Game of Thrones prequel is only speculation at this point, Martin explained.

This is not the first time the subject of a Game of Thrones spinoff has come up. Benioff and Weiss said in July that the franchise is so rich and deep that there are countless storytelling opportunities.

“One of the great things about what [Martin] did is he didn’t just build a story; he built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it,” the pair explained. “There are a lot of different ways you could go with it; we just really haven’t had time to really think through the details of it because we’re so focused on getting the show made.”

Game of Thrones had a strong showing at the Emmys last night. The show won a dozen awards, giving the series 38 in its history, making it the most-awarded primetime show in the history of the Emmys.

Game of Thrones Season 7 will premiere later than usual; rather than April, it’ll instead debut sometime during the summer of 2017. It’ll be shorter than past seasons, too, running only seven episodes. The first Season 7 teaser was released during San Diego Comic-Con and can be seen here. In other news about Season 7, HBO recently confirmed that Harry Potter actor Jim Broadbent will play a “significant” role in the season.
