Fantastic Fest Review: The Mo Brothers' Insane and Badass 'Headshot'

    Headshot Review

The Mo Brothers from Indonesia always deliver. Whether it’s a disturbing slasher movie like Macabre or an intense thriller such as Killers, the directing team comprised of Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto have become a force for genre filmmaking. Their latest film, Headshot, is no exception. A balls-to-the-wall actioner with plenty of insane choreography and even crazier effects on the execution, the film proves once again that, when it comes to daring works of cinema that keeps your nerves firmly in grip and your thirst for excitement quenched, this is a filmmaking team worthy of your attention. It helps that the presence of star Iko Uwais reminds you of The Raid, as well, as the action found within is every bit as intense and ›››

Watch: Full Trailer for Jim Jarmusch's The Stooges Doc 'Gimme Danger'

    Gimme Danger Doc Trailer

Time to rock out with Iggy! Magnolia Pictures has unveiled a trailer for the documentary Gimme Danger, about the rock band The Stooges, directed by legendary filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. This is the other big film that Jarmusch brought to the Cannes Film Festival this year – he premiered two, the other one being the fictional feature Paterson (one of my favorite films this year). Gimme Danger is a feature doc telling the story of The Stooges, a rock band from Michigan featuring Iggy Pop as the vocalist that launched with a concert in 1976. The doc tells a very extensive history of the band and features a bit of concert footage, as well as interviews and more. Cannes reviews state it’s “an exciting testament to the survival power of the Stooges’ music, reviled or ignored in its time, then rediscovered by the late 70s punk generation, and now widely celebrated as the work of – as Jarmusch claims at the start – ‘he greatest rock and roll band ever.’” ›››

  • Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Slash' About Fan Fiction Becoming Real

Official Trailer for Indie Film 'Slash' About Fan Fiction Becoming Real

    Slash Trailer

“You write sex like a 12-year-old, and I think you know it. Have you ever even had sex?” Gravitas Ventures has released a trailer for an indie film called Slash, derived from the term “slash fiction” about a couple of gamer geeks who are in for an emotional thrill when their own fan fiction (aka “fan fic”) becomes real life. This is actually a goofy, funky coming-of-age story about two youngsters who fall for each other over this “fan fic”. The film stars Michael Johnston, Hannah Marks, Violett Beane, and Michael Ian Black. There’s a few awkward scenes of them actually reading the erotic fan fic, and the rest of it is pretty cheesy. Not sure if this will be any good unless you are really into the nerdy fan fic scene, but have a look anyway. ›››

Supergirl and Arrow Team Up in New Image from DC TV Show Crossover

The decision to move Supergirl from CBS to The CW means that the show now shares the same channel as such other DC hits as Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. A major crossover is planned in the upcoming months, and now Arrow star Stephen Amell has posted a picture of himself and Supergirl actress Melissa Benoist in costume on set. Check it out below:

    3136133-ctehzhhvuaawppe.jpg

It is unknown whether this is for an episode of Arrow or Supergirl, but it will presumably be part of the four-episode “crossover event” that CW head Mark Pedowitz spoke about earlier this year.

In addition, a new trailer for Arrow‘s fifth season has been released. Season 5 will include the show’s 100th episode, and is set to mark the return of the villainous Deathstroke. Check the trailer out below:

Earlier this week, EW premiered a new clip from Supergirl, featuring Superman. You can watch that here.

Arrow Season 5 begins on October 5, while Supergirl Season 2 follows on October 10. The Flash Season 3 premieres on October 4, while the second season of Legends of Tomorrow starts on October 13.

  • American Horror Story Roanoke: 4 Things We Learned From Episode 3 [SPOILERS]

American Horror Story Roanoke: 4 Things We Learned From Episode 3 [SPOILERS]

The sixth season of American Horror Story continued with a third episode that revealed a whole lot about what’s happening to Matt, Shelby, and Lee in the house where they’re plagued by ghosts and other strange things. This week, viewers learned what ties Kathy Bates’ character to the story, and we also caught another glimpse at Lady Gaga’s character.

Lee’s daughter, Flora, has gone missing, but her jacket was found at the top of a tree. The family spent days searching for her but uncovered nothing from their efforts. It took the help of a bizarre psychic named Cricket from New Orleans to help crack open the door for them.

After taking in everything this episode laid out, here’s what we learned about the overall story for the season. Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke ahead.

A Psychic Named Cricket Comes Calling

    3136029-ahs-medium-850x534.jpg

After Lee, Matt, and Shelby search the woods for Lee’s missing daughter, Flora, only to find nothing, a weird man with a bizarre haircut named Cricket enters their house. He says he can find Flora. Everyone is a bit skeptical, until Cricket goes to the room where Flora was talking to the ghost Priscilla, in episode 2, and reveals things only Lee would know, and that Flora is with Priscilla.

After a seance where they meet The Butcher (Kathy Bates), Cricket lets Lee know it will cost $25,000 to find Flora. Lee gives in, even though her brother thinks Cricket is a con artist. Although it may seem crazy, Cricket has answers to what’s happening to all of them, including the connection to Roanoke.

    The Legend of Roanoke Revealed

Even though the family is about an hour drive away from where Roanoke actually exists, the land they live on has ties to it. Cricket reveals that The Butcher was once in charge of the Roanoke Colony, but winter was coming, and the colony was starving. Fed up with her leadership, one of the colonists declared mutiny and locked The Butcher up in some spiked headgear, with the help of The Butcher’s son, Ambrose. They sent The Butcher to the forest to die.

Moments away from death, The Butcher was greeted by what seemed to be a witch (Lady Gaga) who offered The Butcher her freedom for her soul. Of course, The Butcher accepted and headed back to Roanoke and killed the newly appointed leaders. She retook the colony, and she moved them inland, to where Matt and Shelby live, present day.

Something is Going on With Matt

Cricket took the family into the woods to find Flora, and he finds the ghost of The Butcher. Cricket strikes up a deal to leave the Butcher’s land if they get Flora back. During this time, Matt wanders off. During the on-camera interview, Matt says he doesn’t know what happened.

Shelby wanders off to look for him and finds him having sex with the Witch that helped The Butcher, while two of the local hillbillies watch on. Matt is in a trance. When he does catch back up with Shelby, he has no clue what happened. However, having seen what happened with The Butcher and the Witch, there may be something bigger happening with Matt in future episodes.

There Are Still Other People in the Woods

Earlier on in the episode, the family stumbled upon a farm where they thought Flora might be. The family that lived there was long gone when everyone arrived, looking for Flora, but they did discover what was easily the most disturbing moment of the season thus far.

Two unkempt young boys, suckling milk from a pig on the floor of a barn. When the family discovers them, they scream, and the boys scream back, but they don’t understand or speak English or any language for that matter. The moment is incredibly disgusting and disturbing. It’s apparent that those people have been living there for some time, on The Butcher’s land. Could these locals be a part of Matt and Shelby’s problem?

    3136042-ctfascmxeaa2yqn.jpg

The second episode of the new season didn’t give much away to fans. We didn’t see any connection to Roanoke, and it left more frustrating questions rather than answers. Episode 3 delivers a lot all at once, but it keeps building on the mythos of the season. While viewers know how this family’s land ties to Roanoke, there’s still a lot of mystery, especially when it comes to Lady Gaga’s witch character. Who is she and where did she come from?

In addition, the episode continues to build a bit more around the local hillbillies, who somehow may play a role in what’s happening to Matt and Shelby. It may have taken a backseat to everything else this week, but we still know it will be a part of the overall story. The jumping back in time to tell the story of The Butcher may have shaken up the pacing, but it gives viewers exactly what they want. Episode 3 was a great step in the right direction for the overall season.

There is also this moment where it seems the on-camera interview part of the show is going to be more than just delivering expositional dialogue. It feels like there’s something bigger. Maybe the interview section of the show will be affected by The Butcher or the Witch. Or what if the actors playing Matt, Shelby, and Lee somehow cross paths with the evil in the woods? While there are still lots of questions plaguing fans, the one at the top of the list is, “Where is Evan Peters and who is he playing?”

  • Star Wars Director's Portal Movie Could be Announced Soon

Star Wars Director's Portal Movie Could be Announced Soon

Earlier this year, Star Wars director JJ Abrams confirmed that the Portal and Half-Life movies are still on the way, despite the fact that not much has been said about them. Now, he’s reiterated that’s the case and also teased that the Portal movie may be announced soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve; we’re very active,” Abrams told IGN. “I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.”

    3136137-portal1.jpg

“Soon” is open to interpretation, and an announcement would likely be well in advance of release.

IGN also asked Abrams if the Portal and Half-Life films would be continuations of the stories told in the games, he declined to give anything away. However, he said he’s happy with the way discussions are going with writers on the project, though these people have not been named.

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things,” he said. “As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, ‘Oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.’”

The Portal and Half-Life movies were announced in 2013, during the DICE Summit that year.

Abrams and Valve boss Gabe Newell have also discussed working together on a video game, though nothing has been announced. For his part, Abrams and his Bad Robot studio are working on Spyjinx, an action-strategy game launching in 2016 for PC and mobile devices. His team is collaborating with Infinity Blade and Shadow Complex developer Chair Entertainment on the brand-new game.

The next major video game movie is Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender and based on the Ubisoft franchise. It opens in theaters on December 21.

  • Xbox One Sales Rise Almost 1000% in UK Following Slim Model Launch

Xbox One Sales Rise Almost 1000% in UK Following Slim Model Launch

Xbox One sales rose 989 percent week-over-week in the United Kingdom, a dramatic uptick in sales that is thought to be related to the recent launch of the slimmed-down Xbox One S models.

According to MCV, the Xbox One owned a 71 percent share of the console hardware market for the week ended September 24. This represents an increase of 76 percent compared to the same time last year.

    3136130-xb1s.jpg

PlayStation 4 sales jumped 22 percent week-on-week, following the release of the PS4 Slim earlier this month. However, PS4 had only a 19 percent market share for the week and unit sales declined 66 percent year-over-year. When comparing the launch weeks of the PS4 Slim and the Xbox One S, Microsoft’s console enjoyed sales that were 361 percent stronger than Sony’s.

Something that might have fueled the Xbox One’s success last week was the fact that Microsoft launchd a FIFA 17 bundle last week. The game didn’t launch in the UK until today, September 29, but the game was playable through the bundle since it came with an EA Access membership.

“It’s great to see how popular both the Xbox One S and the FIFA 17 Xbox One S consoles are with fans, not just over the last week but since the Xbox One S was released in August,” Xbox UK marketing manager Harvey Eagle told MCV. “4K video streaming and 4K UHD Blu-ray have been extremely well received and we believe there is no better value right now for those looking to upgrade their console.”

Microsoft is on a roll lately, not just in the UK. The Xbox One outsold the PS4 in the United States during July and August. We’ll know if Microsoft can extend its winning streak to three months in a row when NPD data for September comes out in October.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released a new Xbox One S TV ad that touts the console’s 4K Blu-ray player.

  • Mel Gibson Could Play Aged Spy in New Action Movie

Mel Gibson Could Play Aged Spy in New Action Movie

Oscar-winning actor and director Mel Gibson’s next film role may have been revealed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson is in talks to star in an action/spy movie called Every Other Weekend.

The story focuses on a father who has convinced his son he is a CIA spy. In reality, however, he only works at the government agency’s IT department. When they go on a bonding trip to Paris, the father and son duo find themselves in a “life-threatening adventure in which secrets are spilled.”

    3136123-mg.jpg

Gibson plays the grandfather, who is a real spy, though how that factors into the story was not divulged. The movie will be directed by French filmmaker Benjamin Rocher (The Horde) and is scheduled to begin production in France later this year. The Conjuring‘s Peter Safran is producing the movie.

Gibson was last seen in this summer’s Blood Father; he is currently shooting a drama called The Professor and the Madman with Sean Penn. He also directed the November war movie Hacksaw Ridge starring Andrew Garfield, which marks his first time back in the director’s chair since 2006’s Apocalypto.

One of Hollywood’s biggest names, Gibson won Academy Awards for 1995’s Bravehart, which he directed and starred in.

  • Microsoft's Original Xbox One Goal Was to Sell 200 Million Consoles

Microsoft's Original Xbox One Goal Was to Sell 200 Million Consoles

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed that Microsoft’s original goal, at the time when Don Mattrick was running the Xbox division, was for the Xbox One brand to sell 200 million consoles.

Speaking to Stevivor, Spencer did not say if this figure was for the Xbox One alone or if it could include future updates like Project Scorpio and whatever comes next. Whatever the case, 200 million is a big number, and would be well ahead of the PlayStation 2’s individual record of 150 million units shipped.

    3136119-spencer.jpg

“The goal that the team had was to figure out how could we sell 200 million game consoles,” Spencer explained. “We’ve never seen a console sell that many units. The biggest individual console, the PS2, did 120 million or something like that. [Ed. Note: Sony announced in 2011 that the PS2 had shipped 150 million units worldwide]. The approach the team took was people are moving to OTT Video Services [over-the-top, like Netflix and Stan] and television’s getting disrupted–and if we could build a console that could be at the center of this transition and really embrace not only people playing video games, but also people with the changing habits in television, you really take the console market and the gaming market and you expand it potentially.”

The original focus of the Xbox One was to “start up building TV content as a first-party capability,” he added. Microsoft even formed Xbox Entertainment Studios, a division dedicated to bringing TV and film content to the console. However, after Mattrick left Microsoft for Zynga and Spencer was put in charge, one of his first directives was to reposition the Xbox brand with gaming being front and center. Xbox Entertainment Studios was closed, though Steven Spielberg’s Halo TV show is still on the way.

“When we came in after two-and-a-half years ago and started running the Xbox program, I centered us back on not trying to become something other than a game console,” he explained. “You don’t earn the right to be relevant in other categories of usage for the console until you’ve earned the gaming right, so let’s go make sure that’s what we deliver.”

Spencer said his directive when being named Head of Xbox was to ensure that gamers, and game developers, saw the Xbox One as a console that is “for them first.” At the same time, Spencer mentioned that video usage through things like Netflix and YouTube on Xbox One today is as high as game usage.

“But I still think that we have to succeed with gamers first before we get any permission to go do anything else,” he said.

Go to Stevivor to read the full interview.

Microsoft no longer reports Xbox sales figures, so we don’t know exactly how well the console is doing. Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed there are 400 million “active” Windows 10 devices, which include Xbox One consoles.

  • Beyond Good & Evil 2 Teased With More Artwork

Michel Ancel has released another piece of artwork that looks a lot like it could be from Beyond Good & Evil 2. The image was posted on his Instagram page and is of an anthropomorphic shark. You may remember these characters were featured prominently in the first game. Most notable among them was Rufus, a hovercraft racer that hung out at the Akuda bar.

“Ready for the fight ” independence #ubisoft day

A photo posted by Michel Ancel (@michelancel) on

Accompanying the image is a caption that reads “Ready for the fight, independence #ubisoft day.” This is likely a reference to Ubisoft’s shareholder meeting scheduled for today. It has been speculated that Vivendi, which has been acquiring shares in Ubisoft, could attempt to secure seats on its board of directors during this.

This is the second piece of Beyond Good & Evil 2-like artwork that Ancel has posted this week. On September 27 he published an image of male engineer-type character, which fans have speculated is the father of the first game’s protagonist, Jade. On his shoulder is a pig, which is believed to be a young Pey’j.

At E3 2016, Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot confirmed Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still alive, but didn’t outright confirm it’s in active development or when we’d see it get revealed.

“It’s difficult to say,” Guillemot said. “Michel is working on it, but he’s doing two games at the same time–he’s doing Wild at the same time. It’s coming along, but he has to spend more time on it, so we can see it faster.”

More recently, speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Guillemot explained why Ubisoft isn’t rushing to show the game.

“It’s not only the desires that are important, it’s can our team come up with something that will be a revolution,” he said. “You don’t just want Beyond Good & Evil 2, you want a fantastic Beyond Good & Evil 2. You don’t want us to bring it back as something that isn’t perfect. That’s a challenge we’re facing; we have to come back with something crazy and something that will be great.”

It may be, however, that the game is discussed during the shareholder meeting today. GameSpot will bring you the news as it happens.
