We gets loads of remasters these days, often for games that don’t really need them. One game that does, though, is Rockstar’s “time period in a bottle” GTA: Vice City, which for all its brilliance is looking a little rough in 2016.
Something happened in the 80’s that forever shaped the way I thought video games would be when I got older. And that something was this scene from the Japanese animated series Macross.
All is not well in RimWorld, the popular space colonist simulator released in July. Yesterday, a Rock, Paper, Shotgun writer opened up RimWorld’s code and published some surprising revelations about how sexuality factors into its gameplay. RimWorld’s developer, in response, has gone on a tear, denying that the game mirrors the “sexist expectations of romance” described in the recent article.
“This is the dream! It’s conflict, and it’s compromise, and it’s very very exciting.” Lionsgate has unveiled a third trailer for the musical sensation La La Land, directed by Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, easily one of the best movies all year. I totally and completely LOVE this movie so much, just wait until you get to see it yourself. I want need the soundtrack playing on repeat. La La Land stars Emma Stone as an aspiring actress who falls for a jazz pianist, played by Ryan Gosling, while living in Los Angeles. We’ve already seen two fantasticteasers for this movie already, but this full trailer takes the cake, and really shows how wonderful and exciting and full of love and hope and romance this movie is. I wrote in my review that it’s “musical perfection, an exhilarating and emotional voyage through time, deep into music and cinema.” ›››
“We woke up 90 years too soon…” Sony Pictures has debuted a new 30-second TV spot for the sci-fi movie Passengers, from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, directed by Morten Tyldum. We featured the first trailer for this movie a few months ago, and I’m still very excited for it. The story is set far in the future entirely on a passenger ship carrying thousands of people to a colony on the other side of the galaxy. Chris Pratt stars as a mechanic whose sleep pod malfunctions, leaving him awake and alone and unable to last the 90 years left on the ship’s journey. This also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Sheen as a robot bartender, and Laurence Fishburne. There isn’t that much new footage, but this is one of my most anticipated left to see in 2016 and I’m glad it looks so damn good. I’ve also included an extra poster from Thailand below. Enjoy. ›››
“Choose the ones you love. Choose your future.” They’re back! Sony has revealed the first full-length trailer for T2: Trainspotting 2, Danny Boyle’s sequel to his 1996 cult hit film Trainspotting. The first teaser debuted during the summer and didn’t show much, now we finally get a good look at the story and where these friends are in their life. The four main guys are back: Ewan McGregor as Renton, Ewen Bremner as Spud, Jonny Lee Miller as Sick Boy, and Robert Carlyle as Begbie. The full cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, author Irvine Welsh, Simon Weir and Karl Argue. This actually looks like a totally wild follow-up to the original, based on the book Porno by Irvine Welsh, with even more drug-fueled craziness. ›››
Malick fans, listen up! The Brooklyn Academy of Music, aka BAM, is hosting the US premiere of Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life with live orchestra coming up later this month. BAM has announced two nights of The Tree of Life, on November 18th and November 19th, featuring “more than 100 musicians and singers from the Wordless Music Orchestra” performing live over the film. The first version of this live event took place in Dublin back in June, and now it’s finally coming to the US. The score was composed by Alexandre Desplat (read my interview with Desplat from Cannes in 2011), however the film also features additional music by Mahler, Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart and other legends. Tickets range between $35 and $85 for seats on either night, and they will likely sell out fast. This is one of those very rare don’t-miss-it special events. ›››
“My verdict is: I, Olga Hepnarová, the victim of your bestiality, sentence you to death penalty.” Those were the famous words of a 22-year-old mass murderer, who in 1973 drove a truck into a group of innocent people in Prague. The film I, Olga (titled in full I, Olga Hepnarová) tells her story in black & white, and it’s a harrowing cautionary tale about how a careless society and relentless bullying drove this young woman to become a murderer. Michalina Olszanska plays Olga, described as a “complex young woman desperate to break free from her unfeeling family and social conventions.” This seems like an intimate story that takes a cold, hard look at how troubling and harsh society can be. And how it turns good people bad. Watch below. ›››

Sony Pictures may have found a director for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Sources told Variety that Fede Alvarez, who directed this year’s well-received horror movie Don’t Breathe and 2013’s Evil Dead, is “the choice” to direct Spider’s Web.
The movie is based on the David Lagercrantz novel, who continued the Stieg Larsson series after the author died in 2004. In the book, according to Variety, main character Lisbeth Salander “teamed up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to enter a world of a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives–some willing to kill to protect their secrets.”
Salander was played by Rooney Mara in 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with James Bond star Daniel Craig portraying Blomkvist. Whether or not they will return for the sequel remains to be seen.
Variety reports that Spider’s Web has been a “high priority” for Sony since it picked up the rights to the book last year. The film is now being “fast-tracked” and will reportedly enter production in 2017. Eastern Promises writer Steven Knight is writing the screenplay for Spider’s Web.
David Fincher directed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The movie won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Film Editing, while Mara earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo made around $233 million from a $90 million budget, but this was ultimately what co-financiers MGM described was a “modest loss.” Fincher’s film followed the acclaimed Swedish adaptations of Larsson’s three Millennium books, which starred Noomi Rapace as Salander.
