  • Game of the Decade: Destiny Paved the Way for Games as a Service

    Going live.

We’re listing the ten Games of the Decade. These are the ten PlayStation titles released over the past ten years that we believe have left a historic mark on the industry. Whether it’s Destiny’s impact on the Games as a Service space or Journey’s innovative approach to online connectivity, these are the releases that the industry will be referencing well into 2020 and beyond.

A decade ago, the term Games as a Service simply didn’t exist. While the PlayStation 3 had the capabilities to connect to the Internet, buy and download games off the PlayStation Store, and participate in online multiplayer, it was a set of features that only went so far. Video games needed more powerful hardware and a better network infrastructure to take the next step, and so when the PlayStation 4 brought about the current generation, the concept of the live game was born. Working in tangent with the Games as a Service model, it’s the type of title every publisher on the planet hopes to achieve success with. Many have done it since, but Destiny was the first to do it on consoles in a major way and the series has remained one of the biggest of the lot ever since.

  • Xbox Series X Name Explained By Microsoft

Microsoft has revealed that the name for its next-generation game console is simpler than originally believed. It turns out the name of Microsoft’s next-gen line will just be “Xbox” and the Series X name is for a specific model of consoles.

The news comes from Business Insider who confirmed with a Microsoft representative that the Xbox Series X name revealed at The Game Awards applies only to that specific version of the console.

“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” the Microsoft representative said. “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”

  • Game of the Decade: Dark Souls Laid the Foundations for a New Genre

    Prepare to die.

Demon’s Souls did it first, but it was Dark Souls which brought the concept to the masses. Death and difficulty have always been two sources of video game frustration for as long as time remembers, although it wasn’t until 2011 when Japanese developer From Software would truly burst onto the scene and give the concepts a whole new meaning. Accepting failure became a chance to learn; difficulty was something to conquer and boast about in the aftermath. It’s a set of mechanics which has helped to craft an incredibly successful franchise and a handful of even better spin-offs, as well as a myriad of copycats.

  • Stunning Action RPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink Returns with New Co-Op Gameplay, Still Looks Amazing

    The Dragon Knights are here.

As promised, Cygames has wheeled out a brand new look at Granblue Fantasy: Relink. The action role-playing title, which was previously being developed by Platinum Games, continues to impress in two great videos. The one that we’ve embedded above is a cinematic trailer which introduces the Dragon Knights, while the footage below shows off more than ten minutes of four-player co-op gameplay.

It’s a little unclear how co-op ties into the overall experience. Last we saw, Relink was a full action RPG with a story, exploration, and fantastic looking combat. We assume that’s all still there, but multiplayer quests should give the release a lot of replay value on the side.

  • Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition–Seth Announced As Returning Fighter

Street Fighter V: Champion Edition is due next year for PS4 and PC, and it’s bringing back some key characters from past entries. Gill, the final boss from Street Fighter III, is coming back, and now Seth, who served the same function in Street Fighter IV, has been announced as well.

Seth has been shown off in the new trailer below. In addition to their fighting abilities, Seth can also now switch between an overtly masculine and feminine physical form. It’s not clear if this can happen mid-fight, or if you choose their appearance beforehand, although the costume selection presented in the trailer suggests that it might be the latter.

Seth, who can copy abilities from other fighters, also shows off their three V-Skills in the trailer–Tanden Engine, Tanden Maneuver, and Tanden Ignition. Multiple different costumes are shown at the end of the trailer, including a summer costume and one that comes from the game’s story.

Seth will be available alongside the Champion Edition when it launches on February 14, 2020.

  • P.T. Hacker Uncovers The Character Model In Silent Hills Demo, And It’s A Familiar Face

Silent Hills was never released, but thanks to the work of game hacker Lance McDonald, new details continue to emerge about the cancelled horror project. McDonald, who previously revealed that Lisa is right behind you as you play through P.T. (the game’s playable teaser,) has now uncovered the player model you’re controlling in-game.

McDonald, who also recently discovered some cut story content in Sekiro, has shown the character model off on Twitter. The identity of the character model shouldn’t serve as a huge surprise–it’s Norman Reedus, who pops up at the game’s conclusion. This is, however, the first real definitive confirmation that you’re embodying Reedus throughout the experience, even if that had been the assumption all along.

Just to put any uncertainty finally to rest after all this time, yes, the guy you play as in P.T. is the same guy we see in the ending cinematic. Not that there any real doubt, but yeah, it’s Norman Reedus the whole time. pic.twitter.com/PXh5svLRSi

    — Lance McDonald (@manfightdragon) December 12, 2019

It’s a small reveal, but a meaningful one, considering that we will never get to experience Silent Hills in full–the next Silent Hill game will be a video slot machine.

Reedus would, of course, go on to start in Hideo Kojima’s new game, Death Stranding. Kojima has said that he would like to work with Reedus again, and has also suggested that he might return to horror in the future. It’s possible that we’ll still see Reedus getting spooked by Junji Ito-inspired ghouls eventually.

  • New Trailer for James Ivory’s ‘The Europeans’ Restoration Re-Release

New Trailer for James Ivory’s ‘The Europeans’ Restoration Re-Release

    The Europeans Trailer

“I want you to make me a promise: not to get excited.” Cohen Media Group & Cohen Film Collection have debuted an official trailer for a 2K restoration re-release of the classic 1979 film The Europeans, the first in James Ivory’s Henry James triptych. Set in the fall of 1850, a few miles outside Boston. The household of the dour Mr. Wentworth receives two unannounced visitors from Europe, Eugenia and Felix, the daughter and son of his half sister. The film deals with “the social and moral clashes between the New World and the Continent.” This first premiered at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to earn one Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. The costume design and its production design “solidified the ‘state-of-the-art’ (and impeccably researched) period trappings that have since become synonymous with Merchant Ivory.” Starring Lee Remick, Robin Ellis, Wesley Addy, and Tim Choate. The gorgeous looking fighter only has a small character roster at 11 combatants, but we’ve known for a while that it’ll be bolstered with additional heroes and villains plucked from the immensely popular Granblue Fantasy mobile title.
