  • PS4 Back Button Attachment Proves Demand for PlayStation Pro Controller

    Sony should be listening.

Sony made the rather unexpected announcement of a back button attachment for the PlayStation 4 controller earlier this week, allowing the pad to map two buttons to padels placed underneath where your fingers would usually rest. It’s an accessory which has been implemented into the past two versions of Microsoft’s Xbox Elite controller, and if viewing stats are anything to go by, PlayStation fans are making it clear that they want the same capabilities on PS4.

At the time of writing, the YouTube announcement trailer for the peripheral is sitting just shy of three million views. That’s a rather impressive number for what is a fairly basic accessory, especially so when you compare it to the sort of stats first-party titles can garner. For example, the video has nearly double the number of views Ghost of Tsushima’s latest trailer raked in — achieving that in the space of two days. The same can be said for Godfall, the very first game officially announced for PlayStation 5. Sony has managed to get a huge amount of eyes on the accessory, proving that there may be a market here for it to explore.

  • Mini Review: Ashen – One of the Best Souls-Likes Around

    Ruined beauty.

After a year of exclusivity, one of 2018’s best indie titles has finally been given its chance to shine by way of a glorious PlayStation 4 port. Ashen is a Souls-like in every sense of the word, but it’s one of the few which comes close to matching the quality of From Software.

With a gorgeous open world to explore and deep, engaging combat mechanics to master, A44 Games has pieced together an experience that’s just as enjoyable alone as it is in co-op. The game subscribes to the Dark Souls lineage of blocking and attacking when you see an opening more than anything else, but there is room to utilise a dodge here and there. That’ll be enough to take on the tough but fair enemies standing in your path, although it’s a completely different story when a boss comes along.

  • Talking Point: What Free January 2020 PS Plus Games Do You Want?

When will January 2020’s PS Plus lineup be revealed?

What’s the January 2020 PlayStation Plus lineup? And when will the January 2020 PS Plus lineup be announced? It’s going to be a big year for Sony’s subscription service, as the PlayStation 5 is scheduled to launch at some point within the next 12 months. Not only that, but the Japanese giant is seeing increased competition from rivals, like Microsoft’s excellent Xbox Game Pass. In this article, we’re going to recap all of the latest rumours and speculation regarding January 2020’s PS+ lineup.

When Will January 2020’s Free PS Plus Games Be Announced?

It’s almost certain that the festive period will upset Sony’s usual announcement schedule, as the latest PlayStation Plus games are typically revealed on the last Wednesday in the month. That just so happens to be 25th December this time. As such, it’s likely we’ll learn about the PS+ titles either before or after Christmas Day.

  • Soapbox: Despite Being a Good Game, Life Is Strange 2 Wasn’t Worth the Wait

    Liam got tired of waiting.

When it comes to episodic content, Hitman and Life Is Strange 2 are at complete polar opposites of one another. The 2016 reboot of Agent 47’s stealthy escapades was lauded for its approach to content rollout — giving players a new map, set of scenarios, and tons of challenges every two or so months to experiment with. It was just enough time to allow budding agents to master what was on offer before an all-new level took its place. An exciting model indeed, which despite being confusingly dumped for last year’s sequel, proved that an episodic approach to gaming can work. And then Life Is Strange 2 came along to demonstrate how it can go south all too quickly.

Developer DONTNOD Entertainment clearly set its sights high with the follow-up to Max and Chloe’s time-bending adventure, but in doing so, it also dramatically increased the game’s development time. Life Is Strange 2 – Episode 1: Roads released on 27th September 2018. Just under 15 months later, on 3rd December 2019, the series finale finally arrived on PlayStation 4. No matter how its offerings are, that’s an unacceptable length of time in my opinion. Especially so for a title which places all the emphasis on its narrative.

  • Review: Shenmue III – An Impossible Sequel That’s Enjoyable Against All Odds

    Lost in time.

The fact that Shenmue III feels like a direct continuation of the cult SEGA Dreamcast classics is testament to veteran director Yu Suzuki’s unflinching ambition. There may have been almost two decades between this long-anticipated PlayStation 4 instalment and its predecessor, but developer Ys Net isn’t afraid to pick up the plot immediately where it left off. With stern-faced star Ryo Hazuki and his mysterious accomplice Shenhua Ling dumbstruck in a Bailu Village cave, the sequel re-treads the closing moments of Shenmue II before immediately picking up the narrative thread.

This is true time capsule stuff, with the game design left unaffected by the 18 years of advancement that have occurred since the series’ last outing. Running on contemporary Unreal Engine 4 technology, the release looks lush, with saturated colours and sprawling vistas lending a somewhat magical flavour to the otherwise ordinary Guilin backdrop. But as an experience, this follows the exact same format as its forebears, meaning you’ll spend countless hours interrogating clueless locals as you attempt to progress the plot at a glacial pace.

  • Game of the Decade: Destiny Paved the Way for Games as a Service

    Going live.

We’re listing the ten Games of the Decade. These are the ten PlayStation titles released over the past ten years that we believe have left a historic mark on the industry. Whether it’s Destiny’s impact on the Games as a Service space or Journey’s innovative approach to online connectivity, these are the releases that the industry will be referencing well into 2020 and beyond.

A decade ago, the term Games as a Service simply didn’t exist. While the PlayStation 3 had the capabilities to connect to the Internet, buy and download games off the PlayStation Store, and participate in online multiplayer, it was a set of features that only went so far. Video games needed more powerful hardware and a better network infrastructure to take the next step, and so when the PlayStation 4 brought about the current generation, the concept of the live game was born. Working in tangent with the Games as a Service model, it’s the type of title every publisher on the planet hopes to achieve success with. Many have done it since, but Destiny was the first to do it on consoles in a major way and the series has remained one of the biggest of the lot ever since.

  • Xbox Series X Name Explained By Microsoft

Microsoft has revealed that the name for its next-generation game console is simpler than originally believed. It turns out the name of Microsoft’s next-gen line will just be “Xbox” and the Series X name is for a specific model of consoles.

The news comes from Business Insider who confirmed with a Microsoft representative that the Xbox Series X name revealed at The Game Awards applies only to that specific version of the console.

“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” the Microsoft representative said. “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”
