  • See the ‘Jurassic World’ T-Rex, Director Colin Trevorrow Comments on Trailer

See the ‘Jurassic World’ T-Rex, Director Colin Trevorrow Comments on Trailer

    Jurassic World T-rex

The Jurassic World trailer showed us quite a bit, but one thing we didn’t see was one of the series’ signature dinosaurs: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. As a follow-up to that trailer release, however, the film’s official website has launched, and with it comes the first look at the film’s T-rex. Granted, it looks like, well, a T-rex. And what we see is merely a pair of CG renders of the beast. But that’s better than nothing. At the same time, director Colin Trevorrow has provided some commentary on the trailer, and his explanation of a few different points will definitely be of interest to fans who have questions about the new film. See the Jurassic World T-rex images below, along with some talk from the director.

First, here’s the Jurassic World T-rex, via the official site.

    jw-t-rex-1
    jw-t-rex-2

And then, via Empire, we have some comments from Colin Trevorrow about the trailer and the film. There’s a lot more at Empire; we’ve just picked up a couple of specific quotes from the director.

    Gyrosphere Jurassic World

    The Gyrosphere

Where did the gyrosphere come from? ”Steven [Spielberg] loves theme park rides,” Trevorrow explains. “He wanted to create a way for people to get up close and personal with the animals, to make it a self-driving, free-roaming experience. It loads on a track, but once you’re out there, you actually get to navigate around the valley. … I see no way any of that could go wrong.”

That last line is, as anyone who has seen the trailer knows, meant to be serious sarcasm.

Jurassic World water dinosaur possibly a Spinosaurus

    The Aquatic Feeding

Most people who’ve seen the trailer see the scene above as a nod to Jaws. But that wasn’t the point, or that wasn’t entirely the point, at least.

It wasn’t intended that way, however obvious it seems. The idea came out in one of our first meetings – I didn’t know if Steven and Frank [Marshall, producer on all the Jurassic Park movies] had considered an underwater reptile, so I pitched the mosasaurus and went off on the idea. I thought it would be cool if we had this massive animal and the park used one of our most fearsome modern predators as food. There could be a whole other facility where they used shark DNA to mass-produce them to feed the bigger beast. Steven gave me this look like, ‘You know I get it, right?’ And I sunk a little lower in my chair. And then he said, ‘Let’s do it’.

It’s a bonkers idea, but I’m comfortable going to Crazytown, because I used to live there when I was a kid. Children have a creative fearlessness that I envy. If you’ve seen my first movie [sci-fi dramedy, Safety Not Guaranteed], you can see that I don’t mind embarrassing myself sometimes. As a result, my working relationship with Steven can feel like that Saturday Night Live sketch, Laser Cats. I walk in with so much confidence, then I look in the mirror and I’m wearing a tinfoil helmet. Half the time I feel like an amateur, and half the time he says, ‘No, wear the helmet. The helmet works.’

    Bryce Dallas Howard Jurassic World

    The Genetically-Modified Dinosaur

Perhaps the element of the trailer that has generated the most commentary is the bit that points out that a genetically-modified dinosaur will be a big part of the film. Reactions have ranged from “didn’t they see the first movie?” to “why not use all these other cool real-world dinosaurs?” Indeed, Trevorrow gets it.

There is no shortage of awesome dinosaurs. We could have populated this entire story with new species that haven’t been in any of these movies. But this new creation is what gave me a reason to tell another Jurassic Park story. We have the most awe-inspiring creatures to ever walk the earth right in front of us, but for some reason that’s not enough. We’re not entertained. We’re always hungry for the next thing, and those who profit from it are always looking to feed that hunger. The focus groups want something bigger than a T-Rex. And that’s what they get. … We may see little pieces of her as we get closer – in fact, we already have – but I’m confident that we can keep much of that animal under wraps. She’s not the only danger. Far from it.

    Jurassic World Chris Pratt

    Riding With Raptors

The most eye-popping shot of the trailer sees Chris Pratt’s character charging through the jungle on a motorcycle, flanked by velociraptors. They seem to be working together — or, at least, the raptors aren’t attacking Pratt. So what’s up there?

I like that people aren’t sure what the hell they’re looking at. I was concerned about putting this image in an early trailer, but I love that people are as excited about it as they are. It just reinforces that we all want to see something fresh. Those familiar homage shots in our trailer kind of mask how different this movie is from the others, and I’m relieved that people are embracing the new ideas.

Owen’s relationship with the raptors is complicated. They aren’t friends. These animals are nasty and dangerous and they’ll bite your head off if you make the wrong move. But there are men and women out there today who have forged tenuous connections with dangerous predators. That’s interesting territory to me.

  • Nova Probably Won’t Appear In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′

Nova Probably Won’t Appear In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′

    nova in guardians 2

One character that has been the subject of speculation for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is Nova, the Earth-born hero who acts (in various incarnations) as a major warrior against the Kree and Skulls, fighting for Xandar and the planet’s Nova Corps in addition to getting into his own adventures.

Other members of the Corps showed up in Guardians of the Galaxy. We’ve seen concept art that reportedly represents designs for the character cooked up for the first Guardians, and some have guessed that Nova would be one of the characters set to debut in the sequel. Don’t bet on that, according to writer/director James Gunn, who says he wants to keep the emphasis on one single man from Earth.

Gunn, in a reply to his Facebook post about connected universes, was asked about including Nova in Guardians 2. He responded,

I don’t want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans… I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn’t serve the movie right this moment.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 doesn’t open until May 2017, and so it is far too early to say there’s no way Nova will show up. But Gunn has pretty firm control over what’s going on in the film, and so he’s the best indicator at the moment of what we can expect to see.

Gunn previously said of the sequel,

I think the main thing with moving on is we can’t just repeat ourselves. We can’t just say “Okay, well let’s start with something sad and shift into something really happy with some music and let’s have the Awesome Mix work in exactly the same way only with songs from the 80s instead of the 70s.” All of those things, that doesn’t interest me. For me the shift is really about getting to know the characters on a deeper level, knowing them more intimately and uncovering facets of those characters that make them more real to us. At the center of what works about Guardians is that people like the characters. … I mean more deeply into the characters themselves and who they are, how they work and how they think. What their flaws are, what their strengths are. They’re a much more flawed group than The Avengers. They have major major issues.

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens Photos – Let’s Over-Analyze the First Trailer

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Photos – Let’s Over-Analyze the First Trailer

Star Wars The Force Awakens imax

This morning, Disney and Lucasfilm released the first trailer for JJ Abrams‘s Star Wars: The Force AwakensYou can watch that awesome trailer here, in case you haven’t seen it already. (Or if, like me, you want to watch it over and over again.) And for those of you who really want to take in all of the visuals revealed in the first Star Wars Episode 7 teaser trailer, we have compiled a batch of high resolution images from the film to let you take in all the awesomeness one image at a time. Hit the jump to see the Star Wars The Force Awakens photos now.

Update: We have added a Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer commentary video after the jump.

Condensed Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Commentary:

This post contains a ton of information, but we have condensed the best of it all into a trailer commentary for Star Wars: The Force Awakens recorded by David Chen. Watch that below, but also check out the rest of this post for more geeky details like does “Daisy Ridley’s character have a lightsaber on her speeder bike?”

Note: The trailer was released in both 2D and 3D.

“There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?” asks a voice, which we think is probably Andy Serkis. We don’t yet know yet what role Andy Serkis plays in The Force Awakens. Some other fans are theorizing that its Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been consistently rumored as having a part in the new film.

Star Wars The Force Awakens sand planet

We see a sandy desert planet — it could be Tatooine, or it could just be another planet in the galaxy that looks the same.

John Boyega Star Wars: The Force Awakens

And then a stormtrooper pops up into screen, he is sweating with his mask off but still in full uniform. Don’t let that Imperial Stormtrooper armor fool you. This is one of The Force Awakens lead characters, played by John Boyega. As far as we know he is a good guy. This shot also tells us that the Galactic Empire did not fall after the epic Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi – three decades later they are still around.

Star Wars The Force Awakens sand planet

Boyega’s character looks frantically around. What is he looking for? He seems to be in duress. We believe he crashed on this planet.

We hear an Imperial Probe Droid transmission sound at 00:23-:25. Is Boyega receiving a transmission or is their an Imperial Probe Droid nearby?

We then start hearing trumpet music, very reminiscent of the Sarlacc Pit score. This is new John Williams Star Wars score.

Yes, that’s new John Williams score in #TheForceAwakens teaser.

    — Star Wars (@starwars) November 28, 2014

    ZZ1D7EF2EC

Notice the new back of the Stormtrooper armor, its smoother and more modern looking — instead of a modular back plate it appears there is a magnetic attachment.

Star Wars The Force Awakens ball droid

Star Wars The Force Awakens ball droid

We then see a new droid, rolling along on what appears to be the same desert planet. We will call him Ball Droid for now. He is incredibly cute and seems to be emitting R2-like beeps and bloops, but he’s all his own. Reportedly, this droid belongs to (or was created by) Daisy Ridley’s character. We’ve heard that she’s a scavenger of sorts.

In the background we see what appears to be abandoned engines. Could they be podracer engines? They certainly look like it. The green one on the left looks kind of like Gasgano’s and the rusted one the right sort of looks like Ratts Tyerell. Neither is exact though, as Episode I was decades ago. If they are podracers, this could be more evidence that we are on Tatooine. The sport is also big on Malastare, however, which has deserts and lakes. We know that Episode 7 shot on locations with both sand and water.

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtrooper

The light flashes as we are now inside a ship filled with Stormtroopers. This is our first official look at the new streamlined modern-looking Stormtrooper helmet. Also, notice they’re all different heights. Each one of these troopers is an individual. The third one from the right is noticeably shorter than the others — is that a visual nod to a specific idea from the original Star Wars?

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtrooper blaster

One of the stormtroopers readies his blaster. It seems to be a more advanced form of the classic ‘trooper weapon.

    stormtrooper blaster comparison

Here is a comparison between the Stormtrooper E-11 blaster from the original trilogy and the one seen in the Force Awakens trailer.

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtroopers

The door to the transport ship opens as a squad of Stormtroopers prepares to face the other side.

It almost looks like the dropship is over or looking out on water, but it may be just a trick of the light and some exhaust from the ship.

    drop-ship-water

Star Wars The Force Awakens stormtroopers

What’s on the other side? We don’t know. Its very dark although we do see some lights.

    swtfa-drop-ship-detail

What are these details in the background, beyond the edge of the ship?

@slashfilm :36 looks like moisture evaporators w/lights on them, seen through the opening door. Door seems similar to imperial shuttle too.

Daisy Ridley Speeder Star Wars Force Awakens header

Much like Thanksgiving, the Star Wars teaser trailer has a long and hearty history. Even before fans knew what “Star Wars” was, Lucasfilm was making trailers to tantalize moviegoers with just enough information and visuals to get them excited. The process continued after Star Wars became massive, reached new heights with the prequels, and continues in 2014 as fans everywhere freak out over seven brief glimpses into the seventh Star Wars film, The Force Awakens.

If you’ve already watched the trailer a hundred times but still want more, why not check out the teaser trailer for all seven Star Wars films?

These Star Wars teaser trailers mostly come from the fantastic Star Wars YouTube page. Others are from Movies.com.

    Star Wars Teaser Trailer

The Empire Strikes Back Teaser Trailer

Revenge Return of the Jedi Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones Teaser Trailer

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Teaser Trailer

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer

The Force Awakens definitely shows the least of all of these trailers, but it’s also the furthest out from release. In the case of the prequels, the trailers were all about six months away from release. That gave post-production a lot more time to finish shots for a teaser trailer, like Attack of the Clones for example. It’s shorter than Force Awakens, but has so much more in it.

If J.J. Abrams had cut a shorter trailer with as much footage as the Attack of the Clones trailer, the Internet might have broken with all the speculation. I think – about 13 months out – this teaser trailer does exactly what it should. It tells us there’s a new Star Wars coming out, it has cool stuff in it and you’ll want to know more.

Which is your favorite Star Wars teaser trailer of all time?

  • Xbox Japan Boss “Resigns” Amid Poor Sales Results

Xbox Japan Boss “Resigns” Amid Poor Sales Results

Microsoft has sold about 40,000 Xbox One’s in Japan since its September launch

Takashi Sensui, the general manager of Xbox in Japan, has reportedly “resigned” from his role as the Xbox One continues to struggle in the region.

However, Sensui will remain at the company, moving to Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters to take on the role of General Manager for the Interactive Entertainment Business. He will report to Xbox VP Mike Nichols and provide a link between Xbox’s US and Japan teams.

Considering his transfer, it is unclear whether Sensui resigned or, perhaps, has been promoted. According to a Kotaku translation of the Japanese games publication Famitsu, Sensui is reportedly “stepping down”. GameSpot has contacted Microsoft for clarification.

Xbox Japan is undergoing a management shake-up, with its execs Yoshinami Takahashi and Nobuyoshi Yokoi now in charge of the business.

The changes come amid grim sales results for Xbox One in the region, with the console often selling less than 1,000 units on a weekly basis. Since its Japan launch in September, the Xbox One has sold to about 40,000 customers.

By comparison, in 2005 Microsoft shipped an estimated initial batch of 159,000 Xbox 360s across Japan, of which about 62,000 were sold in the first two days alone.

  • Best Black Friday 2014 Gaming Deals

Best Black Friday 2014 Gaming Deals

Black Friday no longer means sales the day after Thanksgiving in the US. Instead, it’s expanded into a week-long series of sales and discounts. But the best holiday deals tend to be focused on the upcoming weekend. Online retailers especially have made the in-store only deals almost obsolete, but we’ve lined up what we feel are some of the best deals to meet your gaming needs.

If you’re looking to bulk up your last-gen library you’ll be able to find much better deals than if you want the latest games, but there’s a discount on pretty much everything this holiday. (Note that GameSpot does receive some commission on Amazon affiliate links, however those links are not included in this story. GameSpot does not receive a commission for any other retailer.)

    Console Deals

Wii U: While the $300 32GB bundled with Super Mario 3D World isn’t bad, report indicate that you’ll be able to buy the unit tax free on Friday for just under $270.

However, if you’re willing to spend a little more in exchange for a free game, this Best Buy bundle includes the regular pack-ins (Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land) as well as Super Smash Bros. and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze for $360 — about $50 in savings.

Xbox One: Microsoft already discounted their system to $350 for the holidays, but you can knock off a few more dollars with the following deals:

The Microsoft Store is selling the Xbox One for $330, plus a free game (note that these deals go in and out of stock quickly on their online store, so you may have to check back later if it’s not currently available).

Target is selling the Assassin’s Creed Unity bundle for $330 plus you get a $50 gift card.

And don’t forget that the Microsoft store is also giving $100 credit for your used PS3/Xbox 360. This may or may not work with the specific holiday bundles, but you should still be able to get a $250 Xbox One bundle, at the least.

PlayStation 4: We haven’t found any crazy deep discounts, but most retailers have a $400 bundle available that includes the essential titles Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us Remastered.

    Gaming Deals

Now through Monday December 1, Sony is throwing an online sale of co-op games on the PlayStation store. As always, the discounts are bigger if you’re a PS Plus subscriber, and if you spend over $100, you’ll earn $15 back.

The Microsoft store has a lot of games on sale you can check out here with most deals kicking off today, on Thursday 11/27.

Blizzard is having a sale on all of their games on the Battle.net store. These deals are available now through December 2 at midnight PST.

Origin is offering over 200 PC games for sale through their own portal, but the best deals are on EA developed/published games like Titanfall, Mass Effect, and Dead Space. Now through December 1 at midnight PST

The regular brick-and-mortar retailers run the gamut on hardware, peripheral, and game discounts as well, and some of the discounts are available through their online stores as well

    • Wal-mart
    • GameStop — keep in mind that the retailer is not open during Thankgsiving itself, but some stores will open starting at midnight on Black Friday.
    • Target

As always, Amazon has an ongoing series of Lightning Deals on gaming and technology. You’ll have to keep an eye on the site itself to see what’s upcoming and whether it’s a big enough discount to make it worth buying.

    UK Black Friday Deals

Looking for retail deals that go beyond just the US? We’ve rounded up the best UK Black Friday deals right here.

    Other

It’s not specifically gaming related, but it’s worth pointing out that Amazon is offering a 30% discount on their printed books when you use the code HOLIDAY30 — only good with one book per account. But you could get the Super Smash Bros. collector’s guide on the cheap.

One of my favorite stores for videogame related t-shirts, apparel, and collectibles, Fangamer.com, is currently offering free shipping for the US and 50% for international shipping. They’re running a Bundle Up sale this weekend, and they’ve just started offering a new Legend of Zelda fan-made art book that I’m 100% buying for myself.

Any particularly great deals you’ve found? Let us know in the comments, or email news@gamespot.com

  • Watch: The Other Secret Far Cry 4 Ending Discovered… or is It?

If you’ve already discovered Far Cry 4‘s wonderful secret ending, you’ll probably be invested enough in the game to already know that, somewhere, out there, a second secret ending exists.

The game’s creative director, Alex Hutchinson, confirmed two weeks ago that GameSpot had discovered the game’s first secret ending, found just moments into the game, which allows players to reach the credits within about fifteen minutes.

But he also disclosed on his Twitter feed that the game contains what he describes is a “super secret” alternate ending that “creates a whole new mini-location”.

Don’t look if you want to enjoy it for yourself but Gamespot just outed the secret alternate ending if you listen to Pagan at the start…

But they didn’t find the super secret alternate ending that requires you to make a snap decision and creates a whole new mini-location…

First of all; more games should do this.

Secondly, it looks like that second alternative ending has now been discovered, and it exists at the very end of the game. Major spoiler: After confronting Pagan, following the assault on his fortress, you’re given the option to shoot him or not. Should you decline, Pagan will sit with you and reveal more interesting details about his back-story and character. He’ll then fly off in a chopper.

Major spoiler: However, you can at this point launch a rocket at the helicopter, which, if struck, will crash nearby. That crash site, it is suspected, is the new mini-location that Hutchinson was referring to. Here, you can loot Pagan’s body to find, among other things, his prized gold pen.

However, it’s not absolutely certain that this is the secret alternative ending that Hutchinson was referring to. The developer has not explicitly stated on his Twitter feed that this is what he previously was referring to, and some gamers are continuing their search.

Check out the second secret ending in the video below, as discovered by the YouTuber xGarbett.
