  • ‘Source Code 2′ in Development, Anna Foerster Set to Direct

‘Source Code 2′ in Development, Anna Foerster Set to Direct

    Source Code sequel

Source Code, directed by Duncan Jones from a script by Ben Ripley, featured Jake Gyllenhaal as a man whose consciousness is projected into another man’s body to relive the last eight minutes of the target’s life over and over again, ostensibly to track down the culprit in a terrorist plot. The film was modestly successful, and Source Code always seemed likely to be a one-and-done situation. But now there’s a Source Code sequel in development, and a director attached to oversee it.

Variety reports that Anna Foerster is signed to direct the sequel, which is currently without a cast or distributor. Those will presumably follow in fairly short order for the indie.

The Mark Gordon Company and Vendome Pictures, which made the original, are behind the sequel; Vendome is financing. And Ben Ripley will once again write the sequel, following on his script for the original film. There are no story points announced at this point.

Foerster has worked as the second unit director on other Mark Gordon Company films, including Roland Emmerich projects 10,000 B.C and The Day After Tomorrow; she was also Emmerich’s director of photography on Anonymous and White House Down, having already been a visual effects cinematographer on Independence Day and Godzilla, among other films. She has gone on to build a solid television resume that includes episodes of Criminal Minds, Army Wives, and Outlander.

In short, Foerster has a lot of experience on big, demanding projects, and so this seems like it could be a great hire. We’ll hope the script is solid, and that they can pull together a cast that excites audiences and works for the sequel.

  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Cast Revealed; Includes Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie

‘Suicide Squad’ Cast Revealed; Includes Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie

    Suicide Squad

Warner Bros. has just revealed the cast of David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad, and it is a huge ensemble. Jared Leto is the Joker, Will Smith is Deadshot, Tom Hardy is Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney is Boomerang and Cara Delevinge is Enchantress. The film is scheduled for release August 5, 2016. Read more about the Suicide Squad cast below.

Variety posted the news. Here’s what WB President Greg Silverman said about the cast:

The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.

While the confirmation of this news is incredibly huge, it’s all stuff we’d heard rumors about over the past few weeks. The fact that Courtney is playing Boomerang and Delevinge (who was previously thought to be up for Harley Quinn) is Enchantress, are the two newest bits.

Warner Bros. sees this film as their superhero version of Ocean’s Eleven and did their best to fill it with a cast somewhat similar to that film. I think they achieved that. Smith remains one of the biggest stars in the world. He’s an actor that rarely, if ever, does ensemble films anymore. This is Leto’s first film after winning an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. Then there are Robbie, Hardy and Courtney, all of whom are getting to be stars on their own. This is massive.

According to Variety, Jesse Eisenberg is expected to return as Lex Luthor in this film and they’re still casting Amanda Waller, the Nick Fury-esque leader of the Squad. Oprah Winfrey is reportedly at the top of WB’s list, but they’re also courting Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, and Suicide Squad in August, Warner Bros. is doing their best to really plant their flag as major players in the superhero landscape. Marvel might have Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange in 2016, but Warner Bros. is right on their tail.

And can we just step back and think about this? Will Smith is playing freaking Deadshot! Jared Leto is following in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger to play the most iconic villain in all of comic books. And he’ll surely have to go against Batman at some point. Plus, we finally get Harley Quinn on the big screen. My mind is a little boggled right now.

Suicide Squad will start shooting in April in Toronto.

Are you surprised as the massive level of talent in the film?

  • PS4 Gets Dead Island 2 Beta Before Xbox One, PC

PS4 Gets Dead Island 2 Beta Before Xbox One, PC

The upcoming beta for open-world zombie game Dead Island 2 will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 for a period of 30 days. After that time is up, it will be made available on Xbox One and PC, according to an FAQ on the game’s website spotted by Videogamer.

To get into the Dead Island 2 beta, you needed to have preordered November’s cel-shaded spinoff, Escape Dead Island. Publisher Deep Silver has not announced any other ways you can get into the Dead Island 2 beta, though it still has plenty of time to announce further plans.

A start date for the Dead Island 2 beta has not been announced, nor are there any immediate details on what the beta will entail.

Unlike the original Dead Island (2011) and sequel Dead Island Riptide (2013), which were developed by Polish studio Techland, Dead Island 2 is currently in development at Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager.

Dead Island 2 is not the only new Dead Island project in the works. There is also the MOBA Dead Island Epidemic and a Dead Island movie, which was recently resurrected.

For more on Dead Island 2, which launches in 2015, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Watch 60 Minutes of Halo 5 Footage

YouTube user Ready Up Live has posted an entire hour of Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer footage, captured during the HaloFest in Los Angeles in November. Apart from an initial intro, there’s no commentary, so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Xbox One game without any interruptions.

The maps you’re seeing are Empire and Crossfire. You’ll also get to see how the range of new Halo 5 player abilities, including ground pound and thrusters, affect balance and overall play. Of course, Halo 5 is still about a year away from release, so what you’re looking at is a non-final version of the game.

The Halo 5 beta, which runs in 720p at 60fps, kicks off December 29 and runs through January 18. Buying Halo: The Master Chief Collection will guarantee you a spot in the beta, though it’s unclear if there will be other ways to get in.

Halo 5 launches in fall 2015 for Xbox One. For more, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage.

  • Classic '80s Console ZX Spectrum Reborn

Sir Clive Sinclair, the revered inventor and entrepreneur who launched a range of seminal home computers in the 1980s, has backed a new project to revive the ZX Spectrum brand.

His team’s new invention is the Sinclair Spectrum Vega; a microconsole that comes with more than 1,000 ZX Spectrum games pre-installed. Resplendent with a familiar aesthetic, the Vega is a miniaturised version of the ZX Spectrum that is both a games controller and console in one.

Once hooked to television sets, the device is capable of running more than the 14,000 games developed during the Spectrum era.

Its creators, a UK firm called Retro Computers, seek £100,000 from the crowdfunding site Indiegogo to help commercialise the project and build the first 1,000 units.

Sinclair Research, the company responsible for the 1982 original, is a shareholder in Retro Computers.

Some 21 hours since the project launched, Retro Computers has raised about £6,800 of total funding. It will need to raise the remaining £93,000 within the next sixty days.

A ten percent royalty of Vega sales will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

  • This PS4 Game Wants to Make the RTS Genre Less Sadomasochistic

This PS4 Game Wants to Make the RTS Genre Less Sadomasochistic

Asher Vollmer, creator of mobile hit Threes!, has announced his next project, a real-time strategy game for PlayStation 4 called Close Castles. Vollmer says his aim for the title is to “fix” the RTS genre, and make it less sadomasochistic.

“Let’s face it: RTSes are miserable pain engines designed to give players the worst possible experience,” Vollmer says on the PlayStation Blog.

“They’re kind of fun (though deeply stressful) right up until the first interaction with another player and then it’s all downhill for the next forty-or-so minutes. You play until someone gives up. They are lonely exercises in sadomasochism. Anyway hello. My name is Asher Vollmer and I intend to fix all that with my new game, Close Castles.”

Close Castles is coming to PS4 in 2015, though PlayStation Experience attendees can play it this weekend.

Here’s the setup: you and your rival built your castles far too close to each other. Your task is to build up your kingdom (in the cramped confines) while at the same time dispatching your citizens to break down your enemy’s castle. Vollmer says he will reveal story details later that explain just why the castles were built so close together.

Vollmer adds that Close Castles is a fast-paced game, which meant that he had to make the controls “as simple as possible” to work on a controller.

“You move your cursor around the field and press a button to build structures,” he explained. “What you build and where you build it will determine you and your opponent’s collective fate.”

Close Castles was designed for local multiplayer, Vollmer went on to say, adding that the game will feel more like a fighting game at higher levels.

The game’s art (see the images below) was created with the help of artist Dominique Ferland. Close Castles’ characters and settings are meant to come across as “cute as heck.”

  • Watch: Barry Burton Returns in Resident Evil Revelations 2

Watch: Barry Burton Returns in Resident Evil Revelations 2

Barry Burton, the surprise cult star of the first Resident Evil game, will be a lead character in the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations 2.

The classic S.T.A.R.S. operative, famous for his “Jill Sandwich” line, is revealed as a co-star for Revelations 2 in a new trailer from publisher Capcom (above). Joining him will be series mainstay Chris Redfield.

“Headed for the remote prison island in search of his missing daughter, Moira Burton, Barry meets brand new character Natalia Korda, a little girl who has a strange power that allows her to sense enemies and hidden items,” Capcom writes.

“Using this skill alongside Barry’s proven combat abilities, players will need to alternate between the two to survive the mysterious island and find Moira.”

Capcom’s plan for Resident Evil Revelations 2 is to split the game across four episodes, which will release between February and March. Bundled together, these episodes cost $25 / £20, or individually at $6 / £5 each.

The bundle offers bonus content, such as “two additional spin-off episodes that focus on telling the side stories of each of the two new Resident Evil characters: Moira Burton and Natalia Korda,” as well as an additional RAID mode character, Hunk. These can be purchased separately too.

Meanwhile, new enemies come in the shape of the Rotten and The Revenant. Capcom explains: “The Rotten have bones that are visible through their bodies and stop at nothing to hunt down the living, and the horrific Revenant are formed from parts of human beings sewn together.”

The release date details are below, and further down you’ll find a selection of new images.

Developer Epic Games has announced the launch of the Alpha testing phase for its sandbox survival game, Fortnite. As detailed on the official website, the Alpha will run from December 2 until December 19.

According to the developer the purpose of the testing phase, which is called Online Test 1, is to ensure that various features work properly. This includes sign-ups, patching, and gameplay. Fornite is described as a co-operative sandbox survival game with gameplay divided into day and nite sections. • Sony Teases Upcoming Announcement for Emagon With New Trailer

PlayStation Espana may have pushed the teaser trailer for an upcoming announcement a little early. Titled Emagon, the teaser trailer above shows a man exploring the woods with a compass before finding a plant in a parched desert arae. It’s worth noting that Emagon isn’t an actual word in Spanish, and if you read it backwards, it says “No Game.”

However, since the announcement is meant to coincide with the upcoming PlayStation Experience on December 5, and the post is on an official PlayStation site, it’s unlikely this is an elaborate prank. The post writes that the announcement is a “well-guarded secret,” but what do you think it is? We’ve reached out to Sony for comment on when we’ll learn more in English.

Regardless, we’ll likely find out during the awards presentation for the former VGAs (now dubbed just The Game Awards). The show is followed by the PlayStation Experience that same weekend in Vegas.

We’ll be covering the event live from Vegas, but you’ll also be able to watch the presentation live and stay up-to-the-minute on any announcements right here on GameSpot.
