It seemed like a totally preposterous idea: turn Terry Gilliam’s weird, clever movie 12 Monkeys into an ongoing TV show. This seemed clearly doomed to suckitude. But in a totally implausible twist, the Monkeys show is actually surprisingly terrific. Spoilers ahead…
First 4 Figures is launching a The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker statue line this year, and they’re starting big. Here’s a teaser for the first piece in the series. Look for more pics of Toon Ganondorf when he goes up for preorder later this week.
Earlier this week, we brought you news of deliciously evil prank site ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com, which, for a modest fee, will ship your enemies glitter. Unfortunately, it seems the world has too many enemies and not enough glitter: the man behind the site is overwhelmed and selling out.
I first learned about director (and /Filmcast listener) Ben Aston when he wrote me an email a year ago asking me to check out one of his short films. Since then he’s put out two more short films, both of which have gone on to play at prestigious film festivals all around the world. His latest short film, He Took His Skin Off For Me, blew me away and represents an exponential step in his growth as a filmmaker.
Hit the jump to see Aston’s films, and to listen to a podcast interview I did with him about finding success as a maker of film shorts. We discuss the sacrifices Aston has had to make for his art, as well as practical tips to get a short film seen.
Dinner and a Movie – This was one of Aston’s earlier short films, and while it is highly enjoyable, I think Aston was still finding his voice here. The performances are fantastic and the technical aspects are great, but the pacing is slow for a short and as a result, the payoff doesn’t land for me as well as I’d like. Nonetheless, it has a lot of heart to it and I can definitely understand why Vimeo chose to honor it with Staff Pick status.
Russian Roulette – Made for under $100 in the course of a few days, Russian Roulette is a brief but sweet and touching tale of two people trying to find company in the midst of loneliness. I was shocked to hear this film had been shot using a Canon T2i (which can be purchased for less than $200). It is a true testament to what can be accomplished with a sharp script, some great actors, and some basic production design. This film will play at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.
He Took His Skin Off For Me – Beautiful, haunting, and profound, this short film is Aston’s latest. The practical effects are astonishing for a student short and the way Aston uses horror movie tropes to convey the idea of a toxic relationship is unique and somehow avoids being overstated. Weeks after watching this, I can’t get over how perfect it is, and how much that last shot haunts me. Definitely worth 8.5 minutes of your time.
We hope you weren’t too excited about the idea of Frank Darabontdirecting the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel, because that is no longer happening. The movie is happening, just not with Darabont as part of the package. The director dropped out of the endeavor this week. So now there’s The Huntsman, as the movie is called, with Chris Hemsworth set to return, but no Snow White (originally played by Kristen Stewart). But despite the fact that Darabont won’t direct The Huntsman there is good news, as a new lady villain is in the wings, with Emily Blunt in talks to play her.
The Wrap reported both Darabont’s departure and Blunt’s arrival. The site says that Darabont” abruptly left the high-priority project” earlier this week, and that Universal will hire a new director next week.
All we have as a reason for Darabont’s departure is that old bugbear “creative differences.” Darabont did write the current draft of the film, based on earlier work by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
Hemsworth returns as Eric, the man who helped Snow White stay alive in the last movie. Now he has to go in search of a stolen magic mirror “forcing him to face not only his past but the evil Snow Queen” who has a grudge against Eric for the his role in taking action against the Snow Queen’s sister Ravenna. Charlize Theron is set to return as Ravenna, though we don’t know how large her role will be, given the end of the last movie.
Blunt would play the Snow Queen.
The Huntsman is set for release on April 22, 2016.
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we grow up, get drunk, get Shakespeare’d, get a life, and wonder what hides in the minds and hearts of office a-holes.
All the Wilderness Trailer
One credit.
When you’re someone who is given a shot to craft something personal, professional and polished you obviously want to let the world know you’ve arrived. Director Michael Johnson is such a guy that, based on the strength of this trailer, there is no other reaction to have other than feeling compelled to want to know more about it. Yes, it’s a coming-of-age yarn that will unfurl itself in a manner that might not be incredibly original but I’m willing to forgo any presumptions as we enter this world of uncertainty and into the life of a kid who, convincingly, makes me believe there is still something to be mined in this genre. I just don’t know what takes hold when you hit the 45 second mark but there is an elevation of the usual navel gazing in the hopes of some profound breakthrough in the life of an artist as a young man and morphs into something far more interesting and engaging. I could be wrong, maybe I’m just working through some things in my own head, but this appears to be a very, very welcome diversion to the usual noise.
Buzzard Trailer
This looks like it was made for the kind of money you could find in the seat cushions of your AMC Pacer.
What director Joel Potrykus has crafted here appears to be born of a psyche only the most enlightened could ever hope to glimpse. It has some of the most raw energy of any movie I’ve been privy to as of late while also being about as tough to love as a trailer can get. We get the beats, we understand what’s at stake, but the real power comes from its distinctive voice and the power with which it wants to be in your face about why you need to kneel before it. By the end of it all there is just us, watching our protagonist gorge himself on a plate of spaghetti, while we try and piece together the last two minutes of our lives and wondering what it is, exactly, that we were just witness to.
A Year in Champagne Trailer
First burgundy, now this.
Last year, documentary filmmaker David Kennard brought us on a tour of wine country to look at how some winemakers in the Burgundy region of France developed this particular brand of vino. He’s back to look at champagne and I can’t think of a more understated documentary that is about to come out than this. It’s not about revolution or exposing any great truth about the world, it’s about this liquid that has been the hallmark for so many within the elite class, that is the unsung hero of many a hip-hop anthem, and for those among us who count How It’s Made as a show worthy of our collective fascination. Equally so, the footage here is alluring in its siren song beckoning us to almost taste the bubbles on our tongue. There are real people, farmers, really, who depend on the elements to keep their businesses going and there’s just enough uncertainty here to indicate that emotions will run high as we watch this process unfold before us.
Girlhood Trailer
I like it.
In 2011, we were exposed to director Céline Sciamma’sTomboy. It was a small, quiet film that was genuine and moving. It exposed a wonderful chasm within childhood where some kids find themselves and the things they’ll do to hold on to something real. It was damn powerful and it showed that Sciamma had a way of being able to float within this young world and making it feel authentic. That said, this trailer for her latest only looks to continue the showcase of her abilities to drill into a moment and mine the moment for its essence. The trailer has a bubbly effervescence that captures the manic highs of a schoolgirl’s life while showing us the moments they can find themselves in that test their abilities to rise above. We don’t get much in the way of narrative or exposition but that’s OK, as what’s important here is to feel this girl’s joie de vivre and be in the moment with her. This is wonderfully put together with the way it slides in the critical praises without it ever dodging the fact you’re going to have to read in order to experience this girl’s life. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.
Anarchy Trailer
Know full well that the trailer for director Michael Almereyda’slast attempt at big screen Shakespeare, 2000′s Hamlet, was unquestionably bad. Ho-riffic. Sinister, even. What I see in this, though, is a shade of my former self who marveled and was swept up in the majesty of Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, 1996′s Romeo + Julietand even the 1993 version of Much Ado About Nothing. I love when there is a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s work that’s put to film and this is no different. I don’t know what to make of Ed Harris‘ Grease inspired look but it’s the content, verily, that’s a real treat. The trailer doesn’t linger long or let long soliloquies be its marketing hallmark and this is absolutely an improvement over the first trailer which was slightly stilted and didn’t quite sell the story well. It is difficult, to be sure, to bring something antiquated into a contemporary environment but this trailer gives me hope that there could be something special in this interpretation.
Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers to possibly be included in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

Is Ubisoft working on a remastered version of the 2007 original Assassin’s Creed? Probably not, but that’s what we’re led to believe from this image that appeared on Twitter recently. The ridiculous board game from the sitcom Parks and Rec, The Cones of Dunshire, may become a reality. Mayfair Games is attempting to create a “miraculously playable” version of the made-up game.
The project is on Kickstarter, so the developer won’t receive any funds unless they meet their full $300,000 goal. But to get a copy of the full game, you’ll have to pay at least $500.
Why is it so expensive? Mayfair writes on game’s Kickstarter page: “This is going to be a very small, one-time run of a giant prestige edition of the game, with disparate pieces, from a licensed property, for a niche audience. We think there exist a few hundred people who desire such a collector’s item, and we’ve provided a few cheaper items for folks that want more modest souvenirs of the show. This is why we went Kickstarter: to quickly gauge the actual interest for an expensive deluxe version similar to what you see on the show. This game will NOT be sold through any our normal channels; backers will receive it and there will be no more. “
Backers of the full version will receive a “multi-level board” that’s “over ten square feet in size.” Of course the game’s “box/crate” will also include “a mountain of coins…such that if they were real coins, you would be very rich.”
A “very special version of the game” from GenCon 2014
As of this writing, 25 people have backed at the $500 dollar and above, putting the total at just over $20k.
While the game is based on a joke, Mayfair games is taking the project (mostly) seriously. “This Deluxe version of the game is as close to the on-screen version of the game that you see in season six of Parks and Recreation as we can manage (and for us to be comfortable about the playability of it). This is meant to be the sprawling riot of pieces shown on the show, and the price reflects what it’s going to take to make something like that.”
As a huge Parks and Rec fan, I probably won’t be ordering a copy myself, but it’ll be interesting to see if Mayfair can pull it off.
