  • Pokemon Snap Coming to Wii U Virtual Console This Week in Europe

Pokemon Snap, the acclaimed Pokemon spinoff originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, is coming to the Wii U virtual console in Europe, Nintendo has announced.

It will launch this coming Thursday, August 18, Nintendo of Europe said on Twitter. Pricing was not announced.

There was no mention of a release in North America. Pokemon Snap launched for the Wii U virtual console in April in Japan. A release for North America seems likely, but this has not been confirmed.

Pokemon Snap sends players on a virtual trip to Pokemon Island where they go on a safari to take pictures of Pokemon in their natural habitat. Things like weather effects, environmental considerations, and the shyness of some Pokemon makes snapping pictures trickier than you’d imagine.

After snapping shots of Pokemon in the wild, players send them to Professor Oak, who judges the photos on the basis of size, pose, technique, and the number of creatures captured.

The new Wii U version of the single-player game supports GamePad, Classic Controller Pro, or the Wii U Pro Controller. Pokemon Snap is already available for the original Wii’s virtual console, priced at $10.

  • Fallout 4 Nuka-World DLC File Size Reportedly Bigger Than Far Harbor

Fallout 4 Nuka-World DLC File Size Reportedly Bigger Than Far Harbor

Fallout 4‘s upcoming Nuka-World expansion, the celebrated RPG’s final add-on, is coming this month. Now, it appears we know the add-on’s final size for PC. It’s reportedly bigger than Fallout 4’s Far Harbor expansion, which included the largest landmass Bethesda had ever made for an expansion pack.

According to GamingBolt, the Steam Database entry for Nuka-World reveals that the content will be around 3.66 GB. By comparison, the Far Harbor expansion was around 2.7 GB.

As GamingBolt mentions, file size is not always directly related to game content. The entirety of the recently released No Man’s Sky, for example, is smaller than a Halo 5: Guardians update.

The file sizes mentioned above are for the PC version of Nuka-World.

Bethesda has stated Fallout 4’s Nuka-World expansion is coming in August, but a specific release date has not been announced. We’re now about half-way through the month, so an announcement should come soon.

Nuka-World, which is set in a post-apocalyptic amusement park, adds new quests, weapons, and more. Here is the official description:

“Take a trip to Nuka-World, a vast amusement park now a lawless city of Raiders. Explore an all-new region with an open wasteland and park zones like Safari Adventure, Dry Rock Gulch, Kiddie Kingdom, and the Galactic Zone. Nuka-World features new quests, Raiders, weapons, creatures, and more. Enjoy the ride!”

Fallout 4’s DLC so far has included Automatron (March 2016), Wasteland Workshop (April 2016), Far Harbor (May 2016), Contraptions Workshop (June 2016), and Vault-Tec Workshop (July 2016). All of that, as well as Nuka-World, is included with the $50 Fallout 4 DLC Pass.

We would expect Bethesda Game Studios to continue to support Fallout 4 after August with gameplay updates for tuning and bug fixes. But as for what’s next? Fallout 4 director Todd Howard has talked about some “big and crazy” projects, so maybe it’s one of those.

Recently, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said he knows what Bethesda Game Studios is working on for the next decade and they’re all projects fans will be excited about. The Elder Scrolls VI might be one of them.

  • Retrospective: NBA Jam

    Retrospective: NBA Jam

NBA-Jam-RetrospectiveDuring the early 1990’s an arcade machine would grace the gaming world with a new style of sports title different than anything that had been seen before. It was a fast paced physical basketball game that anyone could pick up and play. The game was NBA Jam and the year was 1993. Midway had created a masterpiece and Acclaim did a great job of porting it over to home consoles shortly after. Acclaim was not known for creating great games but its arcade ports were usually on point. Although NBA Jam started out in the Arcades, in America the Sega Genesis port was king. This was probably due to the fact that the Genesis was always known for its great arcade conversions.

  • Impressive Fan-Made Pokemon RPG Released After 9 Years [UPDATE: REMOVED]

[UPDATE] The creators of Pokemon Uranium have removed all download links for the game. In a statement posted on the game’s website, developers said they have not been personally contacted by Nintendo’s lawyers, but are taking the game down out of respect for the rights-holders.

Pokemon Uranium reached more than 1.5 million downloads.

    Here is the full statement:

“After receiving more than 1,500,000 downloads of our game, we have been notified of multiple takedown notices from lawyers representing Nintendo of America. While we have not personally been contacted, it’s clear what their wishes are, and we respect those wishes deeply.

“Therefore, we will no longer provide official download links for the game through our website. We have no connection to fans who reupload the game files to their own hosts, and we cannot verify that those download links are all legitimate. We advise you to be extremely cautious about downloading the game from unofficial sources.

“We are blown away by the response this game has received, and we thank you all so much for your outstanding support. We will continue to provide Pokemon Uranium-related news and updates through our official channels. You are welcome to continue discussing and sharing content related to the game on our forums and Discord, where there is a very active community.

“Thank you for reading, and let’s share the love of Pokemon!”

    The original story is below.

A fan-made Pokemon RPG has finally been released for PC after almost a decade in development.

Pokemon Uranium consists of the usual Red/Blue formula, but introduces a lot of new things, including the region of Tandor, more than 150 Pokemon, and a Nuclear type. The goal of the game is to “recapture the classic Pokemon experience” with some twists. You can see many of the new Pokemon in the trailer below, which was released in July.

The game is now available for free to download from the Uranium website and does not require an emulator. It’s available for PC, with a Mac version still to come. As of this writing, the site is down due to the sheer amount of attention it’s been getting now that the project has been released, according to a tweet.

Uranium appears to be an incredibly impressive project, which makes what seems like the inevitable cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo and The Pokemon Company so unfortunate. The website and videos make it clear that Uranium is a not-for-profit fan project unaffiliated with the official Pokemon brand.

But as we’ve seen time and again, that has little bearing on lawyers deciding to shut down these types of fan-made games. Another impressive project, a remake of Metroid II called Project AM2R, was recently released and quickly served with DMCA takedown notices. According to a blog post on August 9, its creator had not received a cease-and-desist letter, but the DMCA requests has forced the game to essentially go underground. That may end up being the fate of Uranium as well.
