This weekend is offering a couple of free games to play, and now there’s another one. Tactical first-person shooter Squad is available to play for free on Steam until Sunday, November 13, at 1 PM PT.
If you want to keep playing past its free promotion, Squad is discounted to $20, while the soundtrack is $3 down from $6. Additionally, both can be purchased in a bundle for $22. It’s also worth noting that Squad is currently in Early Access. You can install and start playing it here.

Other games available for free this weekend include Rainbow Six Siege and Dirt 3. Siege is free until Sunday at 1 PM PT, and if you want to keep playing past that, it’s discounted to $25. Dirt 3, on the other hand, is part of a giveaway on the Humble Store until November 12 at 10 AM PT, but once you claim your free Steam code, you’ll get to keep it forever.
As for other discounts, Steam has the grotesque stealth-strategy game Party Hard on sale for $6.45. All of the discounts mentioned in this article are good until Monday, November 14, at 10 AM PT.
[UPDATE] A spokesperson for Nintendo told Game Informer that Wii U shipments to North American retailers for this financial year has now ended. The spokesperson added that Wii U production will end in the “near future” for Japan, though specific timing was not mentioned.
“We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners,” the representative said. “We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”
The original story is below.
A notice on Nintendo’s Japanese website appears to confirm that Wii U production, as rumored, is ending in Japan soon. Kotaku discovered that a statement on the site reads, 近日生産終了予定 (kinjitsu seisan shuuryou yotei), which the site translated to, “Production is scheduled to end soon.”
Bear in mind that this announcement was made on Nintendo’s Japanese site and specifically pertains to production supposedly ending “within Japan.” Whether or not production is also ending for other markets remains to be seen.
“There is no change to our continuing [Wii U] production,” the spokesperson said, stating that they were not aware of the specifics of the original report.
“Even though the Nintendo Switch is slated to go on sale, [Wii U] production is scheduled to continue,” the spokesperson went on to say, adding that more Wii U games are on the way, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
I’ve never lost my Magic: The Gathering cards to anything more malicious than a sofa cushion, but I can fathom the pain Seattle Seahawks linebacker Cassius Marsh is feeling after his Land Rover was broken into on Tuesday night. What follows is a tragic sequence of events, and a translation.
Dirt 3is currently 100% free on the Humble store. All you need is a Humble account. Free is good at the best of times, but the Dirt games are some of the finest racers of the past decade, so this is as good a time to try one if you’ve never played them.
Look, I’m not going to pretend that everyone should read this, but if you play Destiny—or are just curious about what would make a Destiny player tick—then this research paper based on the game and its players is an interesting read.
“[She] has gone above and beyond my expectations for the role.” Paramount has launched a new featurette for the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie, ahead of the full trailer launch this weekend. In what seems an obvious move to get ahead of the whitewashing claims, the video features Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Oshii, who directed the original two anime Ghost in the Shell movies, talking about how happy he is seeing Scarlett Johansson in the role as The Major. The featurette actually has lots of new footage, and plenty of behind-the-scenes shots, which is great to see because this does look really cool. There’s a Matrix vibe to it, at least with the action, and I’m glad to see them embracing a digitized world. Stay tuned for the trailer next. ›››
“We get on just great…” EuropaCorp has released the teaser trailer for Luc Besson’s epic return to sci-fi, an action movie called Valerian – or in full – Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Based on the graphic novel series, the movie stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian, and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. They must travel to an intergalactic city called Alpha on a mission. The full cast includes Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Rutger Hauer, Mathieu Kassovitz, Sam Spruell, Kris Wu, Alain Chabat and many others. As a huge, huge fan of The Fifth Element, this is definitely my cup of tea, and it looks like it’s going to be awesome. I’m so ready for Luc Besson to bring us another big space opera. Dive in. ›››
“Life isn’t about toys… it’s about mistakes.” FilmBuff has released a trailer for a weird indie film titled The Arbalest, a quirky romantic drama starring Mike Brune. It’s about an inventor of the world’s greatest toy (called the Kalt Cube) who reflects through flashbacks on his obsession with a woman who hates him. The cast includes Tallie Medel, Matthew Stanton and Felice Heather Monteith. One review describes: “If David Lynch and Wes Anderson had a cinematic baby, it might look something like The Arbalest.” It won the top prize at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, and looks like it has some twisted but amusing aspects to it. There’s all kinds of weird touches, including the production name: “A Fake Wood Wallpaper Film.” Check it. ›››
