    Old versus new.

Arthur Morgan or John Marston? It’s a question that we’ve been asking ourselves ever since we finished Red Dead Redemption 2. Obviously the recently released sequel is going to be much more fresh in most people’s minds — including our own — but we can’t ignore how much we liked playing as John Marston in the original Red Dead Redemption. As such, we’re here to ask you, our lovely Push Square community, which lead character is better: Arthur Morgan, or John Marston?

  • Runner3 Makes the Jump to PS4 Next Week

    The Bit.Trip series returns.

The Bit.Trip series is an unusual but well liked string of platformers, and the latest game is no different. Runner3 released on Nintendo Switch and PC earlier in the year, but it’s now heading to PlayStation 4 with a whole host of gameplay enhancements.

The rhythmic running and jumping looks as enjoyable as ever, but developer Choice Provisions has tweaked the game to ensure its PS4 outing is at its best, including a bunch of fan-requested features. You can now restart a level at any time, for instance, or customise the difficulty to your tastes. Runner3 also has multiple playable characters, branching paths in levels, an item shop, and plenty of other bells and whistles.

    Making contact.

  • Road Redemption Looks Like Madcap Motorbiking Fun in PS4 Launch Trailer

    Road Doad Redemption.

We’ve said it many times before, but it remains true — arcade racers are few and far between on PS4. Despite some valiant efforts over the last couple of years, nothing has really stood out. Onrush is well worth a look, but if you’re after a racing game with actual races in it, there aren’t many options. Road Redemption is the latest attempt to revive the genre as it launches on PS4 today, and you can see it in action in the new trailer.

It honestly looks like a lot of fun, even if the visuals aren’t mind blowing. Heavily inspired by the Road Rash games (as well as MotorStorm and the Burnout series), this motorbike-based game combines high-speed racing through traffic with a vast assortment of weapons and offensive moves. A roguelite campaign sees you brawling your way to the top and unlocking permanent upgrades, skins, weapons, and more. The result is a game that looks like it’s from the early 2000s, in a good way.

  • NFL Fortnite Skins Touchdown in the Most Ambitious Crossover Event in History

    Automatic first down.

Fortnite celebrations have become as common as the Gronk spike on Sundays, so it’s perhaps no surprise to see the NFL partner with the biggest game in the world to bring American football outfits to the behemoth Battle Royale. To be fair, even if you’re not a fan of the sport, these costumes do look cool – especially seeing as they extend to all 32 teams, allowing you to don your favourite colours.

The threads will be available from 9th November from the Fortnite Item Shop, and you’ll be able to select what number is displayed on your jersey, so you can pick 84 for Antonio Brown or 12 for Tom Brady – whatever you fancy. Which team will you be kitting your character out with? Would you like to see this kind of partnership extend to the Premier League, NBA, and so on?

  • See How You Can Mess with Time in Déraciné PSVR Launch Trailer

    Releases tomorrow.

FromSoftware’s first foray into virtual reality, Déraciné, is out tomorrow on PlayStation VR, and Sony’s just put out the obligatory launch trailer. This new video is our best look yet at how this curious adventure game works, with a minute or so of fresh footage.

As a faerie, you exist sort of adjacent to the world, able to tamper with it while time is paused. You can see in the trailer that this is used in order to solve puzzles and interact with in-game characters in some fun ways. Story details are still few and far between, but with Hidetaka Miyazaki at the helm, it should be in safe hands.

  • Round Up: Déraciné PS4 Reviews Divide Critics

    FromSoftware’s faerie tale splitting opinion.

Déraciné reviews are out, and we’re still not sure how to pronounce it. Is it ‘Day-ress-a-nay’? Is it ‘Deh-rah-seen’? Is it ‘Day-rass-an-eee’? Goodness knows – what we do know is that critics can’t quite decide whether they like it or not. There are some glowing reviews for this PlayStation VR exclusive from FromSoftware – and also some less than glowing ones. It doesn’t seem like anyone in Europe has review code yet, so we’ll bring you coverage when we can. We’re not sure we’ll be able to solve the pronunciation, though.

We Got This Covered – 9/10

The world-building here is as strong as it is in other FromSoftware games, albeit with a lot less bloodshed and frenetic combat. The level of immersion here feels nothing short of masterful; your time at this boarding school, roaming its halls and interacting with its inhabits, goes by quickly, and although you could, in theory, complete this game in a matter of hours, fight the urge to rush through it and explore every nook and cranny instead. It sounds cliche, I know, but Déraciné will reward those players who appreciate the journey instead of the destination. If you’re new to the world of VR and want something that shows off the tech without requiring you to mindless destroy an array of enemies, this is where you should start. It’s a must-have title in any PSVR owner’s collection.

  • Review: Jumping Flash! – Unique 90s Platforming from a First-Person Perspective

    Buy it, don’t Robbit.

The 16-bit console wars were merciless. During the early concept stage of the PlayStation console, Sony took part in an ill-fated collaboration with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. In September 1995, Jumping Flash! was a PSone launch title, and it’s the type of game that makes you wonder what would have happened if Nintendo hadn’t engaged in their infamous double dealing. Published by Sony but created by a little known developer called Exact Inc., Jumping Flash! feels visually like the natural continuation of games from the Super Famicom era, but presented through 32-bit polygon worlds.

Viewed from a first-person perspective, the gameplay in Jumping Flash! still feels fresh today. You pilot and control a gigantic robotic rabbit, unsurprisingly named Robbit, across 18 stages that are spread over six worlds. Each level is a floating island, and there is a light-headed sense of exhilaration and verticality as Robbit triple jumps upwards, ascending platforms and searching to collect four hidden carrot-shaped jetpods. Robbit reaches the dizzying heights of Super Mario Sunshine’s rocket nozzle, but with a greater sense of control, because with each leap Robbit looks downward, allowing you to judge where to land based upon his shadow.
