  • Review: Just Cause 4 – Explosive in the Wrong Ways

    Just bores.

There’s moments playing Just Cause 4 when you’ll almost certainly find yourself grinning from ear to ear in much the same way that you might watching a ridiculous ’80s action movie. It doesn’t matter that the characters are personified clichés, or that the plot’s limper than the lettuce in a Big Mac, because you just strapped four balloons to a car, then attached a rocket booster to the back of it and sent it flying into an enemy helicopter. The retina-scorching explosion that lit up the sky as a result needed only The Final Countdown playing in the background and it’d be about as glorious a moment as you’re ever likely to experience in a video game.

Now, imagine an open-world action game absolutely packed with bombastic, jaw-dropping moments like this, and that’s exactly what Just Cause 4 would be like if practically every mission in the game didn’t seem like it was intentionally designed with the express purpose of not letting you have any fun at all. What a letdown. It’s like they spent so much time perfecting the physics engine and crafting the various tools that you’ll be able to use to cause consummate mayhem that they didn’t leave themselves enough time to build a game around them. So what you’re left with is a title that allows you to dole out all manner of destruction in fantastically creative ways, but one that also requires you to invent your own reasons for using them, because playing the game as God intended scarcely affords you the opportunity to do so.

  • The Outer Worlds Is a 'Mix of Fallout and Mass Effect', and It Looks Like a Very In-Depth RPG

    Obsidian strikes back.

Oh boy, Obsidian’s really gone and done it. The much loved role-playing game developer has basically gone off and made its own Fallout title, except it’s set in space. Above, you can find 15 minutes of gameplay courtesy of Game Informer, who describe it as a “mix of Fallout and Mass Effect”. If that’s not enough to grab your attention, then we don’t know what is.

It’s got action, it’s got loads of dialogue options, it’s got loot, it’s got squad members — it’s a hardcore RPG. And yes, your character is silent.

  • The Game Awards 2018: Watch Sony Santa Monica Collect God of War's Game of the Year Award

    Oh, boy.

God of War won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018 overnight, and if you missed Sony Santa Monica’s acceptance speech, you can watch it in full above. The winning announcement was preceded by an incredible musical medley, which featured flavours and motifs from the soundtracks of all the nominees.

In her acceptance speech, studio chief Shannon Studstill thanked the team and the wider PlayStation family for believing in its new vision for God of War. It marks a particularly poignant moment for the first-party developer, as there were rumours it was in trouble following the cancellation of another project earlier in the generation.

  • Far Cry: New Dawn's Cover Art Leaks Ahead of Reveal

    Feel the RAGE.

A new Far Cry game will be announced during The Game Awards 2018 later today, and here’s your very first look at it. The box – which boasts the name Far Cry: New Dawn – shows two ladies sat on a sofa, while a man chained to the roof of a car screams out for help. One of the women appears to be wearing roller skate pads, while the other has a giant makeshift sawblade weapon.

As we know from the debut trailer, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic setting, so it’s likely that this is a world whereby law and order has collapsed. It’s unclear whether it’s set in the same map as Far Cry 5, but it’s possible that Ubisoft may have taken the framework for Hope County and adapted it. We’ll need to wait for more information during tonight’s show.

  • Get Discounts on The Game Awards Nominees in US PlayStation Store Sale

    Award winning bargains.

We’re mere hours away from The Game Awards 2018, and as has become tradition, the US PlayStation Store is playing host to a new sale, celebrating the nominees in this year’s show. It’s live right now, and features a whole range of reduced prices on lots of the nominated games.

Battlefield V is down to $35.99, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 can be bought for $47.99, and FIFA 19 is a pretty reasonable $29.99. Of course, it’s not just the big games that are reduced. Smaller games like Donut County, Dead Cells, Celeste, and plenty more are going cheap. What’s more, there are even a handful of inclusions that don’t feature in this year’s Game Awards at all, so it’s definitely worth a quick browse to see what’s available.

  • Hardware Review: Razer Raiju Ultimate – Probably the PS4's Best 'Pro' Controller, But It Ain't Cheap

    Razing the bar.

Almost a whole year ago, we reviewed the Raiju, a “pro” controller for PlayStation 4 from Razer. We walked away pretty impressed with the pad, praising its overall build quality, responsive face buttons, and comfortable triggers. However, its directional pad and shoulder bumpers did leave quite a bit to be desired, and an expensive price point meant that we could only recommend it to those who really cared.

  • A Plague Tale: Innocence Impresses with New Screenshots

    Rat pack.

One of the most promising games currently in production at Focus Home Interactive is A Plague Tale: Innocence. The creepy looking adventure game has been moving slowly but surely forwards, and while there’s still a bit of time to go before its release next year, it’s looking pretty good.

The developer has released a batch of new screenshots from the game, and while they’re perhaps not quite on the same level as some of PS4’s most handsome titles, it’s not far behind at all:

  • Feature: Best PS4 Music of November 2018

    Heavy hitters.

For the final monthly music highlight before we discuss the best soundtracks of the year, we have one more month to work through, and boy what a month it was. This might have been the single strongest month of the year from a musical standpoint, and at least a couple of these are going to be appearing on the Top 10 list that’ll make an appearance around year’s end.

    Fallout 76

Yes, Bethesda’s newest “game” was a hot steaming pile of garbage, but one area that cannot be faulted is the music. The ever-exceptional musical works of Inon Zur return, as he provides the score, just like the previous Bethesda entries. Pair this with the wealth of infectious old tunes that comprise the radio stations, and the wastes of West Virginia at least sound good, if nothing else.
