  • Fans Aren't Happy About Fallout 76 Microtransactions, PC Version Hints at Pay-to-Win

    Lunchboxes offering buffs for Atoms?

It’s fair to say the launch of Fallout 76 hasn’t gone as smoothly as Bethesda would’ve wanted. Filled to bursting with technical issues and sporting an uninteresting world, it’s a pretty unfortunate start for the online multiplayer take on the publisher’s iconic RPG series. Unfortunately, it feels like things are going to get worse before they get better. A new bunch of Christmas themed items are now available to purchase from the in-game store, and fans aren’t best pleased.

The cosmetic items, which include Mr and Mrs Claus outfits, a giant Red Rocket sign, and more, are being called out for their price in Atoms, the game’s premium currency. The ‘Comin to Town’ bundle includes the aforementioned outfits along with two avatars and a radstag decoration, and it’s going for 2000 Atoms, which equates to about £16. That Red Rocket sign is roughly £14, and a pack of Christmassy emotes will set you back about £8. Again, these are simple cosmetic items, but many fans feel like these prices are a step too far from Bethesda.

  • Hands On: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Spreads Christmas Cheer with Operation: Absolute Zero

Tis the season to be jolly.

Call of Duty is back, and it really is better than ever. After launching as the greatest entry in the series this generation, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has received its first major content drop in the form of a new Operation, titled Absolute Zero. The update brings with it sweeping changes to a variety of different modes, new weapons to play around with, and even a new Specialist. We’ve been investing hours upon hours into this latest patch over the past week, and it’s safe to say that Treyarch’s FPS behemoth is in its best place yet.

The headline addition of Operation: Absolute Zero is a new specialist, aptly named Zero. She’s a hacker, and you’ll be able to engage with her full arsenal of abilities in multiplayer, while also appearing as an unlockable skin in Battle Royale mode Blackout. She brings with her two new skills, which are both designed around disrupting the enemy team. The EMP Disrupter is a grenade with an AoE that scrambles the HUDs of opposing squads and takes away their aiming reticules for a limited time, while also disabling any competitor’s equipment in the area. It operates very similarly to Ajax’s 9-Bang, throw one into a congested area and mop things up with your assault rifle for some easy kills.

  • Review: Subnautica – An Excellent Underwater Survival Game

Awe-inspiring as far as the eye can sea.

Fear of the ocean is hardly an uncommon affliction. The disconcerting tension as you bob, completely vulnerable on the sea’s surface. Calming ripples of salty water lapping against your arms as you battle to remain afloat, all the while blissfully unaware of the strange horrors that lurk in the murky depths beneath your flailing feet. After substantial time in early access/game preview stages across Steam and Xbox One, Unknown Worlds Entertainment brings to life this writhing fear once more as Subnautica finally wades its way over to PlayStation 4.

Subnautica’s survival adventure antics take place on an alien planet made up entirely of ocean after your spaceship The Aurora crash lands there. As the lone survivor, you must channel the Bear Grylls within you and endure the myriad of dangers that prowl beneath the waves. Although you have the liberty to explore at your leisure, a story is present that’ll see you return to the Aurora’s flaming wreck and uncover the many secrets of the bizarre alien underwater world as you fight to return to Earth. Subnautica really prides itself on its ability to have you constantly on edge as the consuming fear of the unknown eats away at you, leaving you weary and reluctant to journey out. However, the developer does attempt to balance the scales, showcasing the tranquillity of the ocean through its more luscious environments and intriguing eco-systems.

  • Review: Desert Child – A Fantastic Retro Racer That's Way Too Short

    Eat my red dust.

Desert Child is pretty special. Stylistically, it’s a magical experience, its ‘90s adventure game art style mixing well with an absolutely fantastic soundtrack. Set on Olympia, a city on a fully-colonised Mars, in a not-to-distant future, its world is an intoxicating mix of cultures, from Aussie beach bums to Middle Eastern markets.

But for all the fun that you can have in Desert Child roaming its beautiful pixelated environments as a chilled soundtrack plods along, it’s still a racing game at heart. Though these races seem chaotic at first, with obstacles and explosions filling the screen as you try to dodge them while still beating your opponent to the finish line, you soon get the hang of it.

  • Kingdom Hearts III's Epilogue and Secret Movie to Be Added at Launch

    Not included in leaked copies.

A message from Kingdom Hearts III director Tetsuya Nomura has suggested that the sequel’s epilogue and secret movie scenes will be patched in to the final product at launch. The insinuation comes after Square Enix was forced to release a statement due to copies of the long-awaited title leaking almost a month prior to launch.

“The game’s planned epilogue and secret movie, which are the biggest spoilers in the game, are planned to be released at a later date just in case, so they will not be shown before the game’s release,” he wrote. Nomura acknowledged that the publisher knew the source of the leak, and it’s working to rectify it.

  • Granblue Fantasy Versus Is a New PS4 Fighting Game from Arc System Works

    And another one.

Geez, this Granblue thing is big business, huh? Cygames is not only paying Platinum Games to make a full-scale PlayStation 4 action RPG based on the smartphone series, but it’s also roped in Dragon Ball FighterZ developer Arc System Works for a fighter as well. The one-on-one brawler – named Granblue Fantasy Versus – will release on Sony’s console next year in Japan, but very few other details have been announced.

You can check out a trailer embedded above, though. To be honest, it looks to be more or less exactly what you’d expect from a modern Arc System Works fighter, with glorious 3D environments and bold sprite-like character models. We’re guessing that this is still relatively early in development, but it’s cool to see a company throwing cash around just because it, well, can.

  • PS4 Action RPG Exclusive Granblue Fantasy: Relink Is Looking Grand

    Under-the-radar Platinum Games title shines.

Perhaps it’s because there’s been no Western confirmation just yet, but it’s surprising just how much Granblue Fantasy: Relink is slipping under the radar. The PlayStation 4 exclusive action RPG – which is being developed by industry sweetheart Platinum Games – has been demoed in intricate detail as part of Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy Fes 2018 event, and it’s looking pretty great.

While the title is based upon a smartphone series, this looks a far cry from the gacha nonsense it’s inspired by. There’s a trailer embedded above which introduces the cast and characters, but it’s the gameplay footage that you’ll want to feast your eyes on, showcasing the character action combat and slick visuals. It genuinely looks really, really good.

  • Kingdom Hearts III Copies Hit the Streets a Month Before Release

    Taking the Mickey.

You may want to be careful out there Kingdom Hearts fans: copies of the long-awaited third instalment in the series have leaked – over a month prior to the sequel’s launch. Kingdom Hearts III videos are already being uploaded and shared around the web after an errant copy of the full-game found its way into one lucky player’s hands.

It seems that a handful of copies were briefly available via the Facebook Marketplace, but the listing has since been deleted. Of course, the Internet never forgets, and there are already videos of the opening hours of the title online. While we’re sure Square Enix will be diligent in removing any errant clips, the reality is that spoilers are about to become rife.

  • PS Store Now Allows You to Change Region in Europe

    Brexit.

There’s an unexpected tab been added to the European PlayStation Store overnight: the ability to change region and language. Located near to the bottom of the plaza’s menu, the feature allows you to see storefronts from around the continent and even alter the language. We haven’t tested purchasing anything just yet – some forum posts claim you can’t – but long-term we assume this will help folk who move to countries different to the one their PlayStation Network account was created in.

Sony’s yet to communicate exactly how this feature will operate, but it’s live and available right now if you want to fiddle with it – just don’t come crying to us if you end up having to read everything in Romanian.
