  • November 2018 NPD: PS4 Best Seller As All Systems Shine

    A bumper month.

The story of 2018 has by and large been that all major systems have performed well, and that continued in November with stat-tracking firm the NPD Group reporting that all three primary platforms exceeded sales of 1.3 million units for the month. As was expected, the PlayStation 4 was the best-seller in terms of unit sales, buoyed by the $199.99 Marvel’s Spider-Man bundle that ran during Black Friday. The Nintendo Switch generated more revenue, but was obviously sold at a higher price point.

It means that in its fifth year on the market, the PS4 is currently the best-selling console of the year in the United States, though without any deals in December there’s a good chance that it may still get pipped at the post by the second year Switch. When you consider how well Nintendo’s hybrid is doing overall, though, it’s a sign of just how healthy the industry is that Sony’s console is remaining very competitive this late in its lifecycle. And the Xbox One isn’t exactly dragging its heels these days anymore either.

  • Life Is Strange 2: Episode 2 Keeps Walking on 24th January

    Captain Spirit returns.

Life Is Strange 2: Episode 2 will finally release on 24th January – an incredible four months after the first instalment. It’ll plot the return of an important character: Captain Spirit. Here’s the blurb from the press release: “As the two brothers struggle against the cold, Daniel gets increasingly ill. Sean decides that they must take the risk and make their way to their distant grandparent’s house to recover and seek shelter.”

It continues: “There, they encounter next-door neighbour Chris Eriksen, a young boy who believes he has powers eerily similar to Daniel’s, and they come face to face with his superhero alter ego, Captain Spirit. As Daniel and Chris are becoming fast friends, it’s up to Sean to make sure Daniel follows a set of rules they agreed on for his power: Never in public. Never talk about it. Run from danger.”

  • Dreams Creator Beta Finally Arrives Tomorrow on PS4

    A dream come true.

As expected, that “totally normal” Dreams live stream has revealed the start date of the long awaited beta test. To cut to the chase, the Dreams beta will go live from tomorrow, Wednesday 19th December. It still counts as 2018, guys!

It sounds like it’ll be run on an invite-only basis. As far as sign-ups go, we’ll bring you the relevant links once they’re available. The beta will also run for over a month, so there’s a huge amount of time to create some cool stuff. The closing date is 21st January 2019.

  • Nikola Tesla Horror Game Close to the Sun to Be Published by Wired Productions

    What a BioShock.

Back at Gamescom 2018, an interesting first person horror game was announced, before disappearing altogether. Close to the Sun looks pretty decent, adopting a similar look and feel to BioShock and starring the famed inventor. We still don’t know a whole lot about the game itself, but it’s recently been announced that Wired Productions has picked up publishing duties on the title.

Wired Productions is a relatively small publisher with a few games under its belt, namely The Town of Light, GRIP, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition, and more. Close to the Sun is currently still marked for release next year — hopefully we’ll learn more about the game itself soon.

  • Review: Borderlands 2 VR – A Handsome Adaptation

    You don’t know Jack.

Sony’s not stupid, and it seems to recognise that titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Borderlands 2 VR need to exist in order to get potential PlayStation VR adopters through the door. While headset veterans will accurately argue that it’s the titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Beat Saber that really shine in virtual reality, sceptics will always demand those bigger brands before taking the plunge. And so here we are reviewing another PlayStation 3 port in a different dimension.

Gearbox’s loot-shooter isn’t quite as ubiquitous as Bethesda’s infamous action RPG, but it has popped up in a multitude of places since first debuting some six years ago. This is the full original game, minus its DLC and co-op functionality, which may make it a tough sell for some in 2018. While it’s missing some key components, however, this isn’t the half-hearted port that it seems to be on the surface, as it’s clear that 2K Games has invested a fair amount of effort to make this work in virtual reality.

  • Onimusha: Warlords PS4 Trophies Should Challenge Even the Toughest Samurai

Put your training to the test.

In a surprise reveal earlier this year, it was announced that Capcom would be bringing PS2 classic Onimusha: Warlords to PS4, with enhanced visuals and other mod cons. One such perk is the addition of trophies, and there are plenty of trinkets to collect in this old-school samurai slice-em-up — including a shiny Platinum. However, in order to get the top gong, it seems you’ll have to be a dab hand at the game.

While some are obviously quite straightforward, like absorbing souls with the gauntlet for the first time or defeating bosses, others look to be pretty challenging. ‘Blunt Sword, Sharp Mind’ tasks you with completing the game on Normal difficulty without upgrading your sword or using Jewels, and ‘None for Me, Thanks’ is rewarded to those who beat the game without using herbs or medicine. You’ll also need to beat the game on Ultimate difficulty and also complete it in less than three hours if you want to earn all the trophies. Click here to look at the full list.

  • This LoFi Valley PS4 Dynamic Theme Bundle Is Extremely Chill

    Truant Pixel returns.

First came a brilliant pack of synthwave themes, then a gorgeous globe-based backdrop — the PS4 has been getting some cracking dynamic themes lately. The company behind these, Truant Pixel, has created a huge number of top quality themes in the last few years. While it’s crafted some great ones for specific games, it’s definitely upping the ante with these more general skins.

Its latest offering can be seen in the above video. Called LoFi Valley, this is another series of themes that come as one package, or you can buy them individually. In the background is a full 3D forest scene, and playing over the top are some relaxing chillout tunes. Combined with time of day and seasonal changes, depending on your PS4’s date and time settings, the result is another brilliantly ambient set of themes. It’s going on sale today, but unfortunately, it looks like this is only available in North America for the time being — a release in other regions is currently TBD. Here’s hoping it makes the jump to other territories.

  • Media Molecule Teases Big News During Tomorrow's Dreams Live Stream

    Beta release date? Please?

Is it finally happening? Will Media Molecule really go ahead with it? Could we really, actually be playing the Dreams open beta test before Christmas? We’re not entirely sure just yet, but it seems that the aloof Sony studio is gearing up for something tomorrow.

Media Molecule has been streaming its unfathomably ambitious creation game on a pretty regular basis, so news of a live stream isn’t all that unusual. What is unusual is the way the announcement has been worded: “Totally normal Dreams stream.” So, totally not a normal Dreams stream, then. Seeing as the developer has continued to insist the elusive beta is still coming in 2018, and seeing as 2018 is very nearly over, we take this to mean tomorrow’s stream could very well give us a release date at long last. In fact, it could well be released tomorrow during the stream, considering this year only has a couple of weeks left to go.
