  • PS Plus Members Received Over $1,500 in Free Games This Year

    Still a no brainer.

Yes, technically you pay for PlayStation Plus’ so-called “free” games, but a standard 12-month subscription for $59.99 landed members over $1,500 in software this year. There were some pretty bloody big games available as part of the lineup, too, including the likes of Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank, Mad Max, and Yakuza: Kiwami.

According to some Polygon number crunching, the average age of the games was just over three years, but continued support for the ancient PlayStation 3 has really bumped that number up. It’s going to be interesting to see how the service evolves in 2019, with strong competition from Xbox Game Pass and changes afoot.

  • Bethesda Is Handing Out Fallout Classic Collection to All Fallout 76 Players

    Happy nuke year.

Bethesda has had quite the uphill battle with Fallout 76, and it’s doing its best to win back some much needed positive rep. Case in point: the publisher has said it’ll be handing out free copies of Fallout Classic Collection to all those who played the buggy online title in 2018.

The collection, which includes Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, might be PC only, but the freebie will be given to those playing on PS4 too. It’s a nice holiday gesture, and anyone with a half decent computer should be able to enjoy the trio of games with no trouble. It seems that codes will be handed out at the start of the new year.

  • Game of the Year 2018: #8 – Shadow of the Colossus

    They call me the wanderer.

The odds are that if you have a conversation about the merits of video games as an art form, someone is going to bring up Shadow of the Colossus. Team ICO’s 2005 masterpiece is no stranger to re-releases, having been ported to the PlayStation 3 in an impressive package in 2011, but this time things were different. Rather than “merely” transferring the game to new hardware, developer Bluepoint Games remade the classic title using today’s technology. The end result is a version of Wander’s journey through a forbidden land that looks so much better than we could have ever imagined back when the game first launched.

This is all the more impressive when you consider the fact that the creative vision and intent of the game remains intact. It is an uncompromising vision of the original title, retaining the heart-achingly sombre title’s intent while sprucing everything up. The game’s charmingly janky controls remain intact and your horse, Agro, remains… Well, not the brightest. But everything just looks so much more vivid. The game now looks like what you probably thought it looked like back in the day.

  • Gran Turismo Sport Has Added Over 100 Cars for Free Since Launch

As well as over 30 tracks.

Gran Turismo Sport, in our opinion, is gaming as a service done the right way. Polyphony Digital’s built a pretty impressive e-sports scene around the simulation racer, and it’s continued to improve and iterate upon the PlayStation 4 exclusive since its launch last year – eroding any criticisms that players had about the day one offering in October 2017.

In fact, fansite GT Planet has been doing some number crunching, and it’s revealed that a whopping 103 cars and 32 tracks (across seven locations) have been added over the past year and a bit. That’s a wealth of content, and when you consider that the developer’s been expanding the single player GT League and adding Scapes in unison, you’ve got a pretty meaty package here now.

  • Game of the Year 2018: #9 – Monster Hunter: World

    A true monster.

Finally bringing Capcom’s criminally addictive series back to home consoles, Monster Hunter: World wowed both critics and fans when it released near the start of the year. Its early release date has perhaps hindered it when it comes to Game of the Year conversations, but make no mistake: this superbly crafted action RPG should not be counted out.

  • Review: Marvel's Spider-Man: Silver Lining – A Lukewarm End to the City That Never Sleeps Story

    Every cloud.

The release of Silver Lining marks the conclusion of the City That Never Sleeps expansion for Marvel’s Spider-Man, and as a finale, it’s a slight letdown. It’s clearer now more than ever that a sequel is coming, but leaving so many narrative threads dangling makes for quite an unsatisfying ending to this extra story.

Even so, this still provides you with yet more Spidey action, and when the game is as fun to play as it is, that’s not really a bad thing. The story continues where Turf Wars left off, reintroducing Silver Sable as Hammerhead continues his quest for power. The big baddy has been stealing supplies and equipment from Sable International, and as you can imagine, the fiery mercenary isn’t best pleased. Her relationship with Spider-Man is explored as the pair butt heads in an effort to stop Hammerhead.

  • Game of the Year 2018: The 10 Best PlayStation Soundtracks

    Life’s a happy song.

2018 was absolutely loaded with great games, and equally great music. The quality started all the way back in January and didn’t let up, offering top-notch content throughout the year. But, as with most lists of this nature, some truly incredible music had to be left off, including the likes of Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Spider-Man, and more. But let’s jump into what did make the cut…

    10: Beat Saber

One of the best new PlayStation VR titles of the year, Beat Saber offers up an exhilarating rhythm experience that sees you slashing notes to the beat of some infectiously catchy electronic music. The music – largely courtesy of Jaroslav Beck, alongside some additional contributors – is great on its own, but in the throes of playing, it’s downright transcendent.
