  • Eiji Aonuma And Multiple Others Have Been Promoted At Nintendo

    Climbing the ladder.

There are a lot of employees at Nintendo who have spent their entire adulthood at the company. As many of these individuals grow in experience and age, they help create more games and rise up the ranks. Recently, a number of these well-known individuals have been promoted. Nintendo’s E3 2019 press website reveals new positions for Eiji Aonuma, Hisashi Nogami, Aya Kyogoku and Yoshihito Ikebata.

Aonuma will keep his role as the producer of The Legend of Zelda series but is now also a Deputy General Manager. Hisashi – best known in recent times as the producer of Splatoon – moves into the same position, Kyogoku – the face of the Animal Crossing series – has now taken on the “Manager of Production Group No. 5” role and Yoshihito Ikebata is now with “Production Group No. 6” (responsible for the Metroid Prime and Luigi’s Mansion series).

  • Tom Nook Will Be Reinvesting Back Into The Local Island Community In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

    About time!

If you had your doubts about Tom Nook in the past, the first-look at Animal Crossing: New Horizons earlier this week probably didn’t change your opinion about him.

This time around, he’s offering players a deserted island lifestyle package and is selling it as if it’s the opportunity of a lifetime while demanding 49,800 Bells to set up a tent. Quite frankly, we’re just not convinced. Luckily for Nook, New Horizon’s director Aya Kyogoku and producer Hisashi Nogami were willing to defend his actions during an interview with IGN at E3 2019.

  • Review: Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda – A Beat-Based Wonder

    Striking a chord.

From the opening menu that uses not the rousing Zelda overworld music but the understated theme from Ocarina of Time‘s title screen, you know you’re about to go on a special journey. Cadence of Hyrule (we won’t bother with its ludicrously long official moniker) takes the music we all know and love and remixes it with the gameplay itself, sewing those tunes into the fabric of Hyrule in a way that feels totally natural, but also energetic and fresh.

Music has always been an integral part of the series. Mute the volume while you’re playing the original Legend of Zelda on NES and the difference Koji Kondo’s overworld theme makes is immediately apparent. That game, like many 8-bit classics, relied on music to stir the player and make their adventure feel ‘epic’ in a way the visuals simply weren’t capable of. As time and technology advanced, those themes became less necessary – part of the reason why the Hyrule of Breath of the Wild has only incidental motifs and a more ambient soundtrack. The landscape itself and the wind through the grass tell the story nowadays; a romping overworld tune would get on your nerves after a few hours. What Brace Yourself Games does by fusing the kingdom of Hyrule with gameplay from its hit indie game Crypt of the NecroDancer is make those treasured melodies vital once again.

  • Rumour: Spyro Reignited Trilogy Targeting A September Release On Switch

The purple dragon could also be joining CTR.

Rumours about the Spyro Reignited Trilogy coming to the Switch first surfaced in February 2018. Since then, listings for a hybrid version have popped up on Nintendo’s official website, the Spryo website and also on GameStop. Is this one of the worst-kept secrets? It just might be.

According to GoNintendo, the trilogy will, in fact, be released on the Switch in the near future. An anonymous but reliable tipster who has reached out to the site on multiple occasions over the years is confident the Switch iteration will arrive later this year on 3rd September. GameStop previously said the game would land on Nintendo’s device on 16th August.

  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch Will Grace The Switch This Fall

Another JRPG masterpiece is on the way.

Seems someone at Bandai-Namco is having a very, very bad day since most (if not all) their entire E3 2019 line-up has quickly and steadily leaked online for all to stumble upon. Among such titles is none other than acclaimed 2010 PlayStation 3 exclusive Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch which is gaining a remastered version on the competition and the original re-release on the Nintendo Switch

This JRPG was developed by Level-5 and featured animated cutscene sequences by Studio Ghibli, famous for animated masterpieces such as Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. Rounded up by a beautiful soundtrack co-composed by Joe Hisaishi it was with little surprise the game captured the hearts and minds of reviewers and players alike.

  • Square Enix Has Just Filed A Trademark For Collection Of Mana In Europe

    A small but significant development.

Square Enix has been busy filing Final Fantasy and Mana trademarks for almost half of the year now and this latest one seems to be yet another sign the collection will be released here in the west. Following on from the “Collection of Mana” trademark in Japan in February, the company has now trademarked the same title for Europe.

This trademark has been previously linked to the Japan-exclusive, Seiken Densetsu Collection. This Switch release includes Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest), the sequel Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) and the third game Seiken Densetsu 3, which has never been localised. Perhaps we’ll hear more about this recently trademarked title at this year’s E3.

  • Mario Kart 8 Is Now Five Years Old

We’re ready for a new entry.

Sure, Mario Kart Tour is coming to mobile devices later this year, but right now, we’re still technically playing the same Mario Kart game we were on the Wii U five years ago. Yes, on 30th May 2014, Mario Kart 8 was released in North America and Europe on a Nintendo system that was at the time struggling to appeal to the masses.

The particular entry set itself apart from previous outings in the Mario Kart series with an all-new anti-gravity feature. The DLC was also a first for the series, adding in free Mercedes-Benz karts and two paid DLC packs later down the line – featuring more characters, vehicles and tracks. The 200cc was an added bonus. All of this paid off in the long-run, with Mario Kart 8 becoming the Wii U’s best-selling title and shifting more than eight million copies worldwide.

  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 25th)

Here are our picks, but what are yours?

Once again, we’ve made it all the way to the end of a busy week. We’ve had all the leaked images and info for Mario Kart Tour and a controversial Pokémon competition to keep an eye on over the last few days, but now it’s time to sit down and chat about the games we’ll be playing over the weekend. Several Team Nintendo Life members have done just that below, and we’d love for you to join in via the poll and comment sections below. Enjoy!

    Austin Voigt, contributing writer

This weekend is Memorial Weekend in the States, so my family will be spending it together at our lake home, where my brothers and I will likely be pulling out the old Sega Genesis and Wii that we have stashed there. Some good old Sonic, Ristar, and Wii Sports are in order – all played on a classic 1990s-era television set. Ah, the memories.
