Review: Aggressive Comedy Rubs Raw in 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2'

    Hot Tub Time Machine 2

What could be more ridiculous than a Hot Tub Time Machine? How about a sequel? Gratuitous as it may seem, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has found its way to theaters five short years after its absurd and hysterical predecessor. Extraneous? Sure. Once you’re familiar with the title of the film all questions of whether or not it’s called for get swept aside. The real question here is, “Is this film funny in the slightest?” Simply, yes, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 is hilarious. Bringing three of the four leads back from the first film – the funniest three, by the way – this second film twists the aggressive comedy dial hard to the right and with a brazen attitude. It’s as if the film dares you to be disgusted, and, to an extent, it succeeds. More below! ›››

  • Rumor: Spielberg Wants to Direct Chris Pratt in New 'Indiana Jones'

Rumor: Spielberg Wants to Direct Chris Pratt in New 'Indiana Jones'

    Chris Pratt / Indiana Jones

Here we go… The big rumor on Oscar weekend, with all of Hollywood in town, is that Steven Spielberg is apparently quite interested in directing the new Indiana Jones movie. If you recall, in January we posted another rumor that Chris Pratt – star of Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy – is Disney’s top pick to star as the new version of Indiana Jones. Ever since Disney got their hands on Lucasfilm a few years ago, they’ve been figuring out how to bring more franchises back. Aside from Star Wars it sounds like Indy is next, and word from Deadline around Hollywood is that “assuming a script comes in to his satisfaction, Spielberg hopes to direct that film.” That film being the new Indiana Jones perhaps starring Chris Pratt. ›››

  • Two New Posters for 'Cut Bank' Crime Thriller with Liam Hemsworth

Two New Posters for 'Cut Bank' Crime Thriller with Liam Hemsworth

    Cut Bank

Good folks. Bad deeds. I have to give credit where credit is due. A24 has whipped up some solid posters for the crime thriller Cut Bank (see the trailer), co-starring Teresa Palmer and Liam Hemsworth as some small town people who get mixed up with “good folks” and “bad deeds”. Whenever a studio actually releases artistic posters it’s worth pointing out because it’s still a unique decision, and I still like seeing these. The eye-glasses poster below is an obvious riff on the classic Straw Dogs poster but I quite like the way it looks, along with the bloody mailbox. These make me more interested in the film than any floating heads design. ›››

  • ‘Wonder Woman’ Will Shoot This Fall

    Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot will be back in her Wonder Woman armor before long. Though she’s not set to make her debut as the DC superheroine until next year, Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with the Wonder Woman standalone. According to a new report, it’ll shoot before the end of the year. More on the Wonder Woman standalone shooting schedule after the jump.

According to Deadline, who buried the news in an unrelated casting story*, Wonder Woman will shoot this fall. Michelle MacLaren is directing the film from a script by Jason Fuchs. Warner Bros. already has June 23, 2017 earmarked for the movie. Gadot is also expected to reprise the role for the Justice League Part 1, due out November 17, 2017.

A recent rumor indicated that Warner Bros. wants an entire Wonder Woman trilogy, and that the first film will center on Paradise Island’s first contact with the outside world in the 1920s. That same report claims the second Wonder Woman movie will be set during World War II, and the third will bring Wonder Woman into the modern day. As of now, though, Warner Bros. has only confirmed the one Wonder Woman movie.

Wonder Woman is MacLaren’s second feature, after the direct-to-video thriller Population 436. However, she’s an accomplished TV director, with episodes of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad under her belt. Fuchs’ previous credits include Joe Wright’s Pan and Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Up until very recently, Gadot was best known for her work in the Fast & Furious series. Her other upcoming features are Ariel Vroman’s Criminal and John Hillcoat’s Triple Nine. Her first appearance as Wonder Woman comes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opens March 25, 2016.

(* Oh, and here’s the casting story, if you’re curious: Gadot is in talks for Keeping Up With the Jonses, directed by Greg Mottola. She’ll join Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, and Jon Hamm. Production begins in April.)

  • Star Wars Rumor: ‘Kingsman’ Star Taron Egerton Up For Young Han Solo

    Taron Egerton Han Solo

Fans know infinitely more about Star Wars: The Force Awakens than they do the standalone films. For sure, we know Gareth Edwards is directing one that’ll be released in December 2016. Gary Whitta wrote the first draft, Chris Weitz is writing the latest and we think Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones will star. We also think it’ll be about a group of bounty hunters or pirates hired to steal the plans for the Death Star. Emphasis on “think.”

That’s the 2016 film. 2017 will see Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII and then 2018 will see the next standalone. We think Josh Trank will direct that film, but rumblings are even that might not be true anymore. As for the subject of the film, it’s mostly speculation.

Which is all preamble to the latest rumor, coming from The Sun newspaper in the UK. They say that second standalone movie will feature a young Han Solo (a rumor we’ve heard for years at this point) and that Taron Egerton, currently starring in Kingsman: The Secret Service, is being eyed for the role. Read more about the Taron Egerton Han Solo rumor below.

The rumor originated at the UK tabloid The Sun. It’s not online yet, so thanks to the Daily Mail for the heads up.

According to the report, the Han Solo film will show “how Harrison Ford’s iconic character got the Millennium Falcon and as well as showing how he fell out with Jabba the Hutt.” If that’s the case, you’d have to imagine how he met Chewbacca and other things would be in the film too.

So how much weight does this rumor hold? I would tend to say not a lot as The Sun is not particularly reliable. But Kingsman writer Mark Millar did tweet this:

    Taron shot first. #justsayin

    — Mark Millar (@mrmarkmillar) February 21, 2015

Is he just reacting to the rumor or is there some inside info? Probably the former, but maybe the latter.

A few quick reactions. One, before everyone goes crazy in the comments, I agree. I don’t want to see a Han Solo origin film. He’s my favorite character of all time but part of the character’s appeal are the mysteries in his past. Getting concrete answers to those questions would ruin a lot of the mystique. If he’s part of a larger story (the more likely interpretation) that’s better, but still a little scary.

Second, if the Solo solo film had to happen, I do like Egerton for the role. Unlike other actors who we’ve heard floated he’s young, and he’s got a swagger and confidence similar to Harrison Ford. We haven’t heard his American accent yet (or at least I haven’t) so that’s a question, but it’s obviously workable. Nearly every one of our biggest action stars these days are either British or Australian.

So again – is there any truth to the Taron Egerton Han Solo rumor? We don’t know. But it’s one of the best ones yet. What are your thoughts?
