  • Richard Linklater Is Thinking About a ‘Boyhood’ Sequel

Boyhood BTS - Richard Linklater and Ellar Coltrane

When we last saw Mason Jr., he was contemplating a future full of possibility on the first day of college. Now Boyhood director Richard Linklater says we may yet get a chance to see what comes of that future.

The filmmaker reveals he’s considering a sequel to Boyhood which would follow Mason Jr. through his 20s. Unlike Boyhood, though, it probably won’t take 12 years to shoot. Read Linklater’s comments on a possible Boyhood sequel after the jump.

Linklater was asked about the possibility of a Boyhood sequel during an appearance on the Q&A podcast (via The Playlist). Here’s what he had to say:

To be honest… this film first met its audience exactly a year ago and for the first six months of the year, my answer to that was absolutely not. This was twelve years, it was first grade through 12th grade; it was about getting out of high school. I had no idea about another story, there’s nothing to say. It hadn’t crossed my mind.

But I don’t know if it’s been a combination of finally feeling that this is over or being asked a similar question a bunch over the last year, that I thought, well, I wake up in the morning thinking, ‘the 20s are pretty formative, you know?’” he admitted. “That’s where you really become who you’re going to be. It’s one thing to grow up and go to college, but it’s another thing to… So, I will admit my mind has drifted towards [this sequel idea].

Linklater doesn’t necessarily feel obligated to stick to the Boyhood format, though.

The twelve years [structure] came out of [school structure]. It wouldn’t have to be twelve years. It wouldn’t have to be… I mean, who knows. I mean, if I learned anything on the ‘Before’ trilogy it took five years to realize that Jesse and Celine were still alive and had anything to say. This one would probably be more accelerated, but who knows.

Whether Boyhood really needs a sequel is certainly up for debate. The movie ended on a pitch-perfect note, and besides, Linklater is already exploring the college experience with his next movie That’s What I’m Talking About. Indeed, Linklater himself has described the film as “a continuation of Boyhood.”

Then again, I wouldn’t have said Before Sunrise needed a sequel either, and yet Before Sunset and then Before Midnight turned out to be better and more essential than I could have possibly predicted. As I see it, Linklater’s earned the benefit of the doubt. Especially as he’s taking care not to dive in without a good idea:

I would love to keep working with this cast and I think we all would. But that can’t be the primary reason to do it. You always need something to say. You can’t do it just cause you want to work with your friends, you gotta have something really inside you you’re trying to communicate about those years. I might happen, but I dunno, it’s in the ether in the moment.

That’s refreshing to hear at a time when major studios regularly date sequels and spinoffs before the first film even opens. In the meantime, That’s What I’m Talking About, which is also a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused, should hit theaters later this year.

  • Video: Jude Law Explains Why He Turned Down Playing Superman

    jude law Superman Logo

If all goes to plan, Henry Cavill will be Superman for a long time. Before he accepted the role, however, many actors almost played the character. Nicolas Cage is a famous one. Josh Hartnett is another and Jude Law is a third. Law recently told the story of how he was considering playing the role in a version of the film that was going to be directed by Brett Ratner, but ultimately passed. Listen to the Jude Law Superman story below.

This video, courtesy of MTV, is a few weeks old but just hit our radar.

    Jude Law Superman Video

I know MTV embeds sometimes don’t work outside the US, so here are some quotes. First up, on his initial trepidation.

I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life being that guy who played Superman. If you ever get caught smoking [a cigarette] and you’re Superman then you ruin the lives of all the children around the world.

But still, the actor was curious. So he agreed to look at the costume. Security brought it to him and Law decided he wanted to try it on:

I go in the bathroom, put it on and look in the mirror, and suddenly, I am Superman. And it is an amazing costume. My chest pops up and the music comes on… That was it. I got it out of my system. I took it off, put it in the bag, and was like, ‘I’m not going to do it.’ I saw myself. No need for the rest of the world to see me.

And so Jude Law got to see Jude Law as Superman and thereby denied the vision to the world. No photos were taken so it only exists in the actor’s head. Now, of course, the movie didn’t end up happening anyway. The idea was scrapped and then slowly morphed into what would become Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Still, Law now seems genuinely excited by this story and maybe open to joining the world of superheroes now.

  • ‘Alex of Venice’ Trailer: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Starts Over

    Alex of Venice trailer

A family quietly disintegrates when a stay at home dad (Chris Messina, who also directs) decides to take a break, leaving his workaholic wife (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to keep her son’s development on track, and deal with her father (Don Johnson) as she tries to move forward with her own personal life. Winstead and Johnson won raves for their work when the film premiered at Tribeca last year, and Alex of Venice does look like it has something all its own, based on this footage. Derek Luke, Katie Nehra, and Skylar Gaertner co-star in the film; watch the Alex of Venice trailer here.

Alex of Venice will open in limited theatrical release and on VOD on April 17. Trailer via The Playlist.

In the directorial debut from Chris Messina, Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives a heartwarming performance as an environmental attorney who finds her workaholic regimen thrown into flux when her husband, George (Messina), asks for a break. For Alex, George has always been the one to take the reins at home. When his unexpected departure dawns as something more permanent, Alex finds herself caught balancing her family’s demands, her aging father, played memorably by Don Johnson, and her ambitious career, which she now struggles to maintain. Soon, Alex is forced to reevaluate her life and discover what she was always too preoccupied to notice. Messina’s assured direction, as accomplished as his own performance, creates an honest portrait of a woman facing unexpected vulnerability in order to find her own strength.

'The LEGO Movie' & 'Selma' Amaze with Musical Oscar Performances

    Everything is Awesome

During last night’s 87th Academy Awards, there were more than a couple of musical performances. Not only was there an opening number from Neil Patrick Harris and Anna Kendrick, as well as a 50th anniversary tribute to The Sound of Music from Lady Gaga, but each of the Best Original Song nominees also got time to shine. However, The LEGO Movie and Selma clearly had the standout performances from the nominee pool for very different reasons. While the performance of the catchy “Everything is Awesome” was colorful and crazy, the rendition of “Glory” brought tears to many eyes. Watch below! ›››

    87th Academy Awards

Hollywood’s big night has come and gone, and now that the 87th Academy Awards have been presented, we can look back at the highlights of last night’s ceremony that only ran 40 minutes long. Neil Patrick Harris was the host last night, and while the show started with a pretty cool musical number and some genuine opening remarks about the magic of film, the show still devolved into being boring, slow and delivering only remarkable moments in the speeches from the night’s winners. But there were some great performances from the Best Original Song nominees and also one special segment from Lady Gaga. Watch! ›››

    Film Independent Birdman Parody

Even though the 87th Academy Awards are tonight (we’ll have the list of winners available here after they’re announced), the weekend already saw another celebration for cinema with the 30th Independent Spirit Awards, honoring achievements in independent filmmaking. It’s one of those years where there’s actually a lot of overlap with the Oscars and the Spirit Awards, with Boyhood, Birdman, Whiplash and Nightcrawler (though Selma got more love from the indie world). You can see the winners right here, but if you missed the ceremony on IFC last night, then you simply must check out this spectacular spoof of Birdman featuring comedians Fred Armisen, Kristen Bell, Bill Hader, Miles Teller and more. ›››
