“This life, this is all part of life, and this is your life, so you just have to be yourself.” eOne Films US has debuted a trailer for the fun indie comedy Dirty Weekend, starring Matthew Broderick and Alice Eve. This is the latest film from filmmaker Neil LaBute, and it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. The story seems to follow two random, unlikely friends who meet-up while their plane is delayed at the Albuquerque airport, ending up on a weekend of fun, or something like that. I guess it doesn’t really sound as dirty as that title makes it out to be because it’s much more of a lighthearted comedy, though if you dig into it there are some raunchy things going on. Never imagined we’d ever see these two in a buddy comedy. ›››

“Their Love was a Flame that Destroyed!” BFI recently put together this fantastic infographic highlighting the many features of a “film noir” film. The extensive infographic runs down the various camera/lighting techniques, dialogue, all the key elements of noir, and explores many examples of the genre at its best. They even drill right down into the question of which is the “noirest” of all – and (spoiler!) it’s Billy Wilder’s 1944 crime thriller Double Indemnity, which makes for a great reference throughout the image. This was just too good to pass up, thanks to a tip from The AV Club, and now I need to feature it so we can keep up some interest in classic film noir. Now this might be interesting. In the latest issue of Total Film, the magazine has a profile on Ridley Scott for his upcoming space adventure The Martian. It’s the latest sci-fi movie from Scott since Prometheus and he seems to have found his genre again. The director told the zine that he kind of “adores” science fiction again, which is an interesting full circle considering for years we touted his quote about how sci-fi films were as dead as westerns. Then he came along and made Prometheus, and everyone wanted him to stay away from sci-fi again. Now he’s making The Martian, and it looks damn good, and I still want him to make more sci-fi. Because even though Prometheus didn’t have a great script, it was still very invigorating for the genre. ›››

Time to drive. If you need an afternoon wake-up, or need some inspiration on how to shoot car scenes, or just want to take a “Nightcall” break, then fire this up. Thanks to a tip from One Perfect Shot, there’s a video called “Driving at Night” to watch that features footage from Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film Drive and Dan Gilroy’s 2014 film Nightcrawler. The video is just a basic side-by-side profile of the car sequences in both films, but since these two films have such great car scenes, it’s very mesmerizing to watch. Especially set to the music they use from Drive. I also really love the car (chase) cinematography in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, which also comes to mind with Jake Gyllenhaal driving. This looks like it’s much more than just a comedy – also a heartfelt drama about the struggles of life and how the connections we make can help us all out. The supporting cast includes Adam DeVine, Rene Russo, Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Linda Lavin, Christina Scherer & more. Don’t write this one off yet. This trailer plays similar to the first one, but this film might be worth catching. ›››

“If God exists, then why did he make ugly people?” Paramount has unveiled the first official teaser trailer for Ben Stiller’s highly anticipated sequel Zoolander 2, starring Ben Stiller and directed by Ben Stiller. The cast includes a whole bunch of other names, but this teaser only features Stiller as Derek Zoolander and some fun CGI animation. Oh, and Stephen Hawking’s voice, or so it sounds like it’s him. Owen Wilson did show up at the catwalk event earlier this year, so he’s still in the mix in this somewhere. This teaser is presumably playing in front of Mission: Impossible all weekend, but in the meantime you can catch it below. ›››

Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a photo from the upcoming film Truth, which is the directorial debut of screenwriter James Vanderbilt (of The Rundown, Zodiac, The Losers, The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, White House Down). The film stars Robert Redford as Dan Rather, and Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes, and presents a behind-the-scenes look inside CBS News during Rather’s final days there. This photo only shows Blanchett in the make-up room with Redford as Rather, though you can barely see him only through a mirror. At least it’s something, and puts this on the map for the awards season as we end the summer and head deeper into the fall. Blanchett is always one to watch. See below. ›››

“We can do anything we want!” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead, a documentary telling The Story of the National Lampoon, the comedy magazine from the 60s. This fantastic and funny documentary takes a look at one of the original comedy magazines that started it all, featuring John Belushi, Chevy Chase and many others. We featured the original poster for this film (seen below) and reviewed it at Sundance this year (read Ethan’s glowing review). Some of the appearances in the trailer include Judd Apatow and John Landis, but mostly it’s all about the magazine covers and art they show. I’m still amazed at some of what they got away with. “What positions did you do?” Hold onto your butts, this is a wild one. Thankfully with international trailers they don’t have to worry about MPAA restrictions, so this one lets loose with the sex and it gets quite raunchy. La Belle Company has debuted the French trailer for Leslye Headland’s indie comedy Sleeping with Other People, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read Ethan’s review). Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie star as platonic friends who discuss life and relationships and sex mostly. The cast also includes Natasha Lyonne, Adam Scott, Amanda Peet & Daniella Pineda.
