Rockstar Loves These GTA 5 Fan Videos, and so Will You

There’s something so relentlessly enjoyable about roaming the urban and rural landscapes of Grand Theft Auto 5. The sheer freedom to experiment with its vehicles, people, and constructions, has resulted in a game with near-limitless potential on how much fun you can make for yourself.

Now the game’s developer, Rockstar, is putting the spotlight on undiscovered YouTubers who have created some of the most beautiful and bamboozling user-created videos for the game, from impossible stunts to professional-grade music videos.

These new videos follow GTA 5’s release on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and expect more to follow when the game ships for PC on January 27.

Rockstar’s collection of nine fan videos can be found here, and below we’ve highlighted what we consider to be the best five:

Los Santos by Night, by The XXI, offers a wonderful montage showcasing how GTA V is beautiful for all its little details.

GTAV Online, from PS3 to PS4, by Kokonitos, is possibly the most unflatteringly generic title for this wonderful music video piece. The meticulously arranged footage features wonderful pop culture nods, such as the Terminator 2 chase scene, and is infused with mauve and purple hues. The music, a Daft Punk cover by indie folk band Daughter, makes for an excellent choice too.

Freestyle Daytage, by Fishy Dizzle, is quite extraordinary. It’s BMX stunt riding across the city, sometimes in third-person and sometimes in first, which makes ingenious use of Los Santos’ many rails and platforms. The trick pulled off at 2:16 makes all that vulgar dubstep in the background completely worth it.

Now for something completely different, called GTA5 Next Gen Skydive, by Ash0191. This is a highlight reel of improbable skydive stunts pulled off with god-like precision. As Woody once put it, this is falling with style.

First Person Scorcher Tower Wallride, by VaNilla, is a quite possibly the coolest thing ever done in GTA V. We won’t spoil it for you, but how this trick was even conceived is mind-boggling in itself.

  • Dragon Age: Inquisition Patch Imminent

A second update patch for Dragon Age: Inquisition is expected to go live on Tuesday for most systems, its developer has said.

BioWare, the studio which created the acclaimed action-RPG, said the newest patch will implement a broad sweep of improvements, though the focus will be on enhancing stability.

Full patch notes will be available soon, BioWare said, adding that the new update will include fixes to:

    • Stability – Various crashes, freezes, audio/voice glitches, and many stability improvements.
    • Gameplay – Conversations, quests, plot states, combat, UI, camera, controls, follower/enemy AI and path finding, exploits, radar, and search.
    • Multiplayer – In addition to some of the gameplay improvements listed above, multiplayer fixes also cover areas such as animations, game mode bugs, stat reporting, and stability/crash fixes.
    • PC – Numerous control & UI fixes, fixes to some hitching, improved Mantle performance, graphical glitches.

It’s not clear whether the patch will fix an obscure bug that was discovered to be limiting how chatty the game’s NPCs are. BioWare notes that the patch does make improvements to “conversations”, but has yet to elaborate.

BioWare adds that the patch is expected to roll out on Tuesday for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. There is no release date yet for the Xbox One patch, but the studio insists “we are working hard to this patch out on Xbox One as soon as possible”.

Dragon Age: Inquisition shipped on November 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

GameSpot’s Dragon Age Inquisition review was glowing, with critic Kevin VanOrd writing: “Dragon Age: Inquisition is a wonderful game and a lengthy pilgrimage to a magical world with vital thematic ties to one we already know”.

The EA-published game has also garnered favourable reviews among most critics.

Destiny DLC, The Dark Below, Now Live

Destiny‘s first major expansion, The Dark Below, has now gone live in the west. Players based in North America and Europe can log in to access the premium add-on content, which costs $20 (£20).

New details show that Eris Morn, an NPC vendor, is the new point of contact for the expansion, offering special bounty missions and vanity items. Morn–who stands at the Tower’s main plaza–sells shaders, emblems, cloaks, and warlock bonds, as well as other materials.

Players also have a new reputation to be aware of, Crota’s Bane, which must be accumulated (by completing bounties) in order to have the chance to buy Morn’s items. Meanwhile, a new six-player raid, called Crota’s End, is now available for fireteams to conquer.

A host of streamers have already begun to play through the game on Twitch (video embedded below).

The Dark Below marks the first of what is expected to be multiple expansions for Destiny. It is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. More details of the expansion, which includes new story missions, can be found below.

  • Sony's Post-Apocalyptic MMO H1Z1 Gets January Steam Early Access Date

Sony's Post-Apocalyptic MMO H1Z1 Gets January Steam Early Access Date

Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed a Steam Early Access release date for its post-apocalyptic zombie MMO game, H1Z1. It will be available on PC via Steam from January 15 next year for $19.99.

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley announced via Reddit that the company was expecting to release two versions of the game. The first of these will be the Early Access version, and a “more expensive one” will be announced “shortly.” According to Smedley the difference between the two versions would include features such as different game mode servers and “other specifics.” Smedley confirmed that these different game mode servers could also be accessed by purchasing or earning tickets.

Smedley reiterated that the Early Access version of H1Z1 would not be a finished game, posting “If that’s what you’re expecting, DO NOT BUY EARLY ACCESS. The goal here is to let you in early and help us mold it into a game you want to be a part of for quite a long time.”

Inspired by DayZ and The Walking Dead, H1Z1 was announced earlier this year. Earlier this year Sony Entertainment Online confirmed that H1Z1 will also launch for PS4, although a specific release date has not been revealed. You can check out our interview with SOE president John Smedley about the development of the game here.

Halo: Master Chief Collection Patch Out Now Aims to Improve Matchmaking Times, Team Balance

Halo: The Master Chief Collection developer 343 Industries has released a major patch for the beleaguered Xbox One shooter, promising to improve matchmaking times, success rates, and general stability. The update should also improve team balance, parties, custom games, and achievements.

It’s the latest patch for The Master Chief Collection, which stumbled out of the gate upon release in November. 343 Industries has released numerous patches for the game, which has undoubtedly seen improvements since launch–though some players are still reporting a less-than-optimal experience.

Going forward, Microsoft says it continues to work on future content updates for The Master Chief Collection that should “address further issues.” 343’s work to fix The Master Chief Collection is impacting future game releases, as the developer just last week announced that twin-stick shooter Halo: Spartan Strike has been delayed to 2015.

The Master Chief Collection’s launch woes aren’t going to impact the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians beta, it seems. It remains scheduled to begin December 29.

  • Xbox Exec Responds to Street Fighter 5 PS4 Exclusivity

Xbox Exec Responds to Street Fighter 5 PS4 Exclusivity

Xbox gaming executive Phil Spencer has responded to the announcement that Capcom’s fighting game Street Fighter V is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 for its console release.

He says on Twitter that Microsoft can’t win every business deal, and that he’d rather invest in Killer Instinct, Microsoft’s own fighting game franchise.

“Business deals happen,” he explained to a fan. “We won’t do all of them. When we have a 1st party franchise in a genre I’d rather invest in ours.”

Spencer added that, while Microsoft will make exclusive business deals from time to time–Dead Rising 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are two examples–the company also sees owning IP as of paramount importance.

“There is a mix of deals to do,” he said. “But making sure we own IP [that] Xbox gamers love is critical [in my opinion].”

After a trailer for the game arrived ahead of schedule, Street Fighter V was officially announced on December 6 during Sony’s PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas. The game, which is also coming to PC, will support cross-platform play between PS4 and PC. Capcom has not announced a release date.

  • 20th Anniversary PS4 Sells for $20,000

Some gamers who were able to buy a 20th Anniversary PS4 before the limited-edition systems sold out almost immediately are turning to eBay to sell the commemorative console.

The online auction site features numerous listings for the rare PS4 system, which as was announced last week, and went on sale the evening of December 6 during PlayStation Experience.

Sony manufactured just 12,300 of the consoles, with each unit individually numbered.

Given that the consoles are officially sold out, bidding is trending well above the system’s standard $500 asking price. One 20th Anniversary PS4 sold for $20,100, while another went for $15,100. You can see all the eBay listings here.

The 20th Anniversary PS4 is modelled after the Original PlayStation, which went on sale in Japan on December 3, 1994. Check out GameSpot’s unboxing video above to learn more.

  • Threes Wins Apple Game of the Year

Threes, the acclaimed card puzzle game developed by indie studio Sirvo, has been awarded Game of the Year by Apple.

The game, which tasks players by matching cards of the same number, shipped in February and has accumulated a score of 92 on Metacritic. Apple said Threes was “one of the finest number puzzlers we’ve ever played, this little gem is big on charm and clever concepts.”

It added: “Immensely thoughtful design makes Threes instantly appealing and nearly impossible to put down”.

Platformer Leo’s Fortune took runner-up, while Apple also gave honourable mentions to Monument Valley, Hitman GO, Ruzzle Adventure, Battleheart Legacy, and XCOM: Enemy Within.

Blizzard’s card title Hearthstone, which was nominated for overall Game of the Year at the inaugural Game Awards show on Friday, did not feature in the list.

Meanwhile, in a separate rundown of the most popular apps of 2014, Mojang’s Minecraft finished first in the paid category. Top grossing honours go to Candy Crush Saga on iPhone and Clash of Clans on iPad.

  • Destiny's Dark Below DLC Locking Out Some PS4 Players

Destiny's Dark Below DLC Locking Out Some PS4 Players

Some Destiny players who purchased The Dark Below DLC have discovered that they can no longer access the base game.

According to several online discussion threads (here and here on Reddit), once players purchase The Dark Below DLC, they are presented with a countdown timer for the downloadable content’s release.

However, some players cannot get past the countdown timer. It appears this only affects users who download a digital version of the game on PS4, and then go on to purchase the DLC standalone (as in, not as part of a season pass purchase).

The Dark Below is Bungie’s first Destiny expansion, which is set for a release on December 9. That launch date likely means that the countdown block will resolve itself in a day (but this isn’t guaranteed).

Some Reddit users have suggested a workaround might be possible if players delete and re-download the game file. However, it has not been confirmed that this method works.

The issue was complicated further because the PlayStation Network went down overnight, meaning some users have experienced problems downloading the game file.

Priced at $20 / £20, Bungie’s The Dark Below includes:

    • New weapons, armour, and gear to further customise your Guardian
    • The ability to increase your Light level to 32, and five additional bounty slots
    • Three new competitive multiplayer maps: Pantheon, Skyshock, and The Cauldron
    • New cooperative Strike: The Will of Crota. Purge a twisted horror from the Cosmodrome
    • An additional resident of the Tower: Eris, a resolute survivor of an ill-fated mission
    • And a new six-player Raid: Crota’s End. Face him in the deepest dark

Some exclusive content is also coming to the PS4 edition.

  • UK Charts: FIFA 15 Regains Lead as The Crew Enters at Sixth

EA Sports’ FIFA 15 has returned to the top of the UK all-format chart for the third time this year.

With Britain now in the early days of the holiday season, familiar blockbusters have begun to take hold at the upper-end of the chart. Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare fell one place to second, Grand Theft Auto 5 held third, and Far Cry 4 retained forth.

The only new release to make it to the top ten was Ubisoft’s open-world racer, The Crew, which enters at sixth. That nevertheless represents the biggest game launch of the week. Nearly two-thirds of physical copies were sold on PlayStation 4, while the remainder was sold on Xbox One and Xbox 360 (these numbers do not include digital game downloads).

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, for PlayStation 3, was the only other new entry to make it to the top 40. It landed at 31st.

The official UK top ten, compiled by Chart-Track, follows:
