Watch New Shadow of Mordor DLC Trailer

Lord of the Rings action game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor received its first major expansion this week in the form of the Lord of the Hunt DLC, available now for $10 or free for season pass owners ($25).

Warner Bros. and developer Monolith also released a trailer for Lord of the Hunt, setting up the story and introducing you to some of the monsters you’ll meet along the way.

One of the marquee features of the Lord of the Hunt DLC is the introduction of Beastmaster Warchiefs to the game. These are described as “powerful” new Uruks that can ride monsters and fight you in mounted combat.

Check out the trailer above to see some of these beasts in action.

  • Lords of the Fallen 2 in Development — What Would You Like to See?

Lords of the Fallen 2 in Development — What Would You Like to See?

A sequel to October’s Dark Souls-esque role-playing game Lords of the Fallen is in development, it was confirmed Wednesday by the game’s developer, Deck 13. The project is still very much in the early stages of development, producer Tomasz Gop said.

“We’re now working on a vision and concepts for Lords 2,” Gop told Eurogamer, declining to go into further specifics about the game. Platforms were not specified, though Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC are likely.

Gop also did not provide anything in the way of a release window for Lords of the Fallen 2, which isn’t very surprising given the game appears to only just be getting started.

The original Lords of the Fallen was published by Bandai Namco, though it’s unclear if the sequel will also be.

That Lords of the Fallen is getting a sequel is not much of a surprise. After all, the game’s budget of around 42 million Polish zloty (about $12.4 million) was recouped earlier this year after the game shipped more sell 700,000 copies, of which 200,000 were sold through to consumers.

GameSpot’s 8/10 Lords of the Fallen review praised the game’s combat system and atmospheric worlds. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd also enjoyed the game’s grotesque creature designs that helped hammer home the game’s dark setting.

What would you like to see from Lords of the Fallen 2? Let us know in the comments below!

  • WCW, Sting, and Hogan Invade WWE 2K15

WWE 2K15, the cross-gen pro-wrestling title from 2K Games, can be expanded to include new characters from WWE’s once-rival promotion WCW.

The WCW DLC pack, which costs $7.99 in North America, features five playable characters: Bam Bam Bigelow, Diamond Dallas Page, Fit Finlay, Lord Steven Regal, and Lex Luger.

Further to this, 2K Games is adding two iconic characters to the game–Hulk Hogan and Sting–who were initially offered as exclusive pre-order and special edition bonuses.

Meanwhile, those who purchased the season pass now have access to the WWE Diva Paige.

WWE 2K15 is the second instalment in the series since 2K Games acquired the WWE licence from now-bankrupt publisher THQ. It wasn’t received particularly well by critics.

GameSpot’s WWE 2K15 review cites numerous issues with the game: “Basic actions like dragging your opponent on the mat cause your superstar to wander back and forth before finally settling on which part of your opponent he wants to grab. Spatial recognition for ground finishers is more finicky than ever, and there is little logic to when you can and cannot activate a finishing or signature move. Computer opponents occasionally stand stock still if you’re caught in the corner or in an awkward place on the ground, as if they’ve forgotten how to attack. And countering relies on nearly magical intuition.”

  • New Problems With Assassin's Creed Unity Patch 4

Publisher Ubisoft has confirmed that the forth patch for Assassin’s Creed: Unity on Xbox One may unintentionally require a 40GB download.

The forth patch is supposed to weigh 6.7GB, but some users are reporting that the update replaces the entire base game. “This is obviously not the expected behaviour, and we apologize that many of you will have to wait longer than expected to complete this download,” Ubisoft wrote.

It added that this issue isn’t causing any additional problems. However, Ubisoft added that, while it’s working with Microsoft to resolve the issue, it cannot yet put a timeline on a permanent solution.

“Currently there is one known workaround,” the company added. “Owners of the disc version of the game can uninstall the game and reinstall it. On starting the game, the patch process will start with the correct download size.”

It is not believed that the same issue exists with the PlayStation 4 version of Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

A quick-hit rundown of Unity Patch 4 is available below, courtesy of Ubisoft, while you can see the full patch notes at the game’s forums.

    • Performance & Stability: Frame rate drops, game crashes, lost progression
    • Gameplay: Navigation, lock picking chests
    • Online: Connectivity, matchmaking, companion app

Unity was released in November, though it–like other big-name games this year–suffered through some technical troubles out of the gate. Ubisoft has released a number of patches so far, and is even offering up free DLC and full-games to apologize for the bugs.

For more Unity, check out GameSpot’s review and what other critics are saying.

  • Gabe Newell Steps in to Reinstate Controversial Shooter on Steam

Hatred, the controversial massacre simulator that was pulled from Steam Greenlight late on Monday, has been reinstated a little more than a day later, following an intervention by Valve managing director Gabe Newell.

In an email sent from Newell to the game’s Poland-based developer, Destructive Creations, Newell explains that Valve internally reviewed its decision to pull the game from Steam, which he quickly decided was a mistake.

Writing to Destructive Creations chief executive Jaroslaw Zielinski, Newell wrote:

“Hi Jaroslaw. Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn’t up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that.

“It turns out that it wasn’t a good decision, and we’ll be putting Hatred back up. My apologies to you and your team.”

There is no exact explanation from Newell regarding his decision to overturn the game’s exclusion, though he writes that “Steam is about creating tools for content creators and customers”–a suggestion, perhaps, that he does not see Valve as an authority on taste.

Newell ends his note with, “good luck with your game.”

Valve previously confirmed that it had deleted Hatred from Greenlight after it had rapidly accrued thousands of votes.

“Based on what we’ve seen on Greenlight we would not publish Hatred on Steam,” Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi said on Tuesday. “As such we’ll be taking it down.”

Hatred was revealed to the public in October with a trailer that immediately drew controversy. The video, above, features a lone gunman preparing for a massacre in his home, before setting himself upon the surrounding neighbourhood.

The video depicts stabbings, mall massacres, and shotgun executions. The nameless character, dressed in a leather trench coat, is at one point seen jamming a pistol into a fallen woman’s mouth, before pulling the trigger.

Valve’s initial decision to not support the game followed a similar distancing from the game’s engine creator, Epic Games, after its logo appeared on the game’s trailer. At the time, Epic Games said it “isn’t involved in this project. Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use ‘for any lawful purpose,’ and we explicitly don’t exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we’ve asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product.”

Destructive Creations initially responded to Valve’s removal of the game by saying it respects the corporation’s decision, adding that it was overjoyed with the response from supporters of the project.

In a message to fans, the company wrote: “Even though games like Manhunt or Postal are still available on Steam we of course fully respect Valve’s decision, as they have right to do so. In the same time we want to assure you that this won’t in any way impact the game development, game’s vision or gameplay features we’re aiming for. The game is still to be released in Q2 2015 as planned.

“Moreover we don’t treat this as a failure because yet again this showed us a huge community support we’re totally overwhelmed with. After only a couple of hours Greenlight campaign being live, Hatred gathered 13,148 up votes and ended up on a #7 on top 100 list.

“This is the best proof for us that there are diehard Hatred fans out there waiting for this game to be released. And that we need to keep going to deliver them a game that offers exciting and challenging gameplay. The whole situation only pushes us forward to go against any adversity and not to give up. It also makes us want to provide our fans Hatred pre-orders sooner, as many of you have asked for them.”

  • Flappy Bird Tops 2014 Google Gaming Searches, Top 10 List Revealed

Flappy Bird Tops 2014 Google Gaming Searches, Top 10 List Revealed

Google on Tuesday published its annual Year In Review post, highlighting key trends for the year, and it showed that the mobile sensation Flappy Bird was by far the most searched games term.

The search giant writes that at its peak in February, when the game rose to prominence only to be removed days later (it has since returned), Flappy Bird’s search trend was more than double that of Destiny.

Bungie’s latest shooter may have had the biggest budget of games released in 2014, but it was outperformed in terms of Google search trends by Flappy Bird and another small-scale title, known as 2048.

To put Flappy Bird’s enormous popularity into context, Google’s global search trend results show that Flappy Bird was number six overall search for 2014. It even outpaced ISIS, Frozen, and the Soichi Olympics. Robin Williams was the top overall search trend of 2014.

Google’s Year In Review study also found that retro-themed games made a comeback in 2014, with games such as Shovel Knight and FTL: Faster Than Light showing strong search trends.

On a global scale, Google’s top trending games of 2014 were:

    1. Flappy Bird
    2. 2048
    3. FIFA 15
    4. Destiny
    5. Titanfall

In the United States, Google expanded its list to ten titles. These are:

    1. Destiny
    2. Titanfall
    3. Watch Dogs
    4. ArcheAge
    5. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
    6. Madden NFL 15
    7. Mario Kart 8
    8. Dragon Age: Inquisition
    9. Battlefield Hardline
    10. League of Angels

Video games also show up in the Google report today as part of the Consumer Electronics search category. Microsoft’s Xbox One came in at number seven, while neither Sony’s PlayStation 4 nor Nintendo’s Wii U charted in the top ten. Check out Google’s full Year In Review study here.

  • Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 Announced for Xbox One, PS4, PC

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 Announced for Xbox One, PS4, PC

Lords of the Fallen developer CI Games announced Tuesday that it is “deep in the development” of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, the third installment in a series that’s already sold 5.5 million copies.

CI Games says Ghost Warrior 3 will represent the tactical shooter series’ “first AAA production effort.” The game is scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

“The Sniper: Ghost Warrior franchise is one of the most popular in the CI Games portfolio with over 5.5 million copies sold, so we’re investing a significant amount of effort into the third installment,” CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski said. “We’re fully committed to creating a AAA franchise that gamers can rely on for the ultimate first-person sniper experience.”

Ghost Warrior 3 will be set in a modern day conflict in Eastern Europe. You play a sniper, of course, who is “caught between three warring factions.” In keeping with the formula of past games, you can choose to take out enemies with close-up melee attacks or from downrange with your sniper.

CI Games says Ghost Warrior 3 will offer “non-linear, sandbox-style gameplay” set on open-ended maps. This should allow players the freedom to choose how they want to approach missions. It also means the replayability factor is deep, CI Games says.

The only Ghost Warrior 3 asset shared so far is the image above. When CI Games shares more images or video, we’ll be sure to post those for you on GameSpot.

Predecessor Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 was released in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. GameSpot scored the game a 7. Our review said: “Satisfying stealth and shooting make Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 a notable improvement over its predecessor.”
