Dragon Ball Xenoverse Ships 1.5 Million Copies

Bandai Namco’s fighting game Dragon Ball Xenoverse has shipped over 1.5 milllion copies worldwide, the publisher announced today. The figure makes sense, given that the game was the second most-sold PlayStation 4 title on the PlayStation Network last month, despite being released on February 24.

On the success of the game, producer Masayuki Hirano said, “I would like to thank everyone for their support on this new challenge. We decided to take a risk and create a completely new concept to entertain our fans and Dragon Ball lovers and we are quite proud of the successful result!”

The first downloadable content pack for Dragon Ball Xenoverse is now available on Steam and the Xbox Market Place, and will be available on the PlayStation Network on March 18. The game’s launch wasn’t all smooth sailing however, with servers woes causing multiplayer issues early on.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse is not the only game to have breached new milestones as of late. Simulation game Cities: Skylines shifted more than half a million copies a week after it launched, as did Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask.

Check out how Dragon Ball Xenoverse scored in GameSpot’s review.

Watch: Adam Sandler Video Game Movie "Pixels" Gets First Trailer

The first trailer for Sony’s upcoming video game movie Pixels–which stars Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage–was released Tuesday.

The movie sees a variety of iconic gaming characters, including Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, attacking earth after misinterpreting arcade games as a declaration of war against them.

As you’d expect, it looks absolutely crazy.

Pixels, based on a popular short film, opens in theaters on May 15, 2015. The movie also features Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, and Josh Gad. Directing is Chris Columbus, who previously directed various Harry Potter films and the 1990 Christmas classic Home Alone.

Pixels is just one of many video game movies in development. Ubisoft has a total of six films in the pipeline, including movies based on Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. Meanwhile, Sony is making a Last of Us movie, Konami is moving forward on a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Blizzard Entertainment has its Warcraft movie, and an Angry Birds film is scheduled for 2016. Capcom is also working on new Dead Rising and Resident Evil movies.

  • Steam Now Requires Users to Disclose Paid Endorsements

Steam Now Requires Users to Disclose Paid Endorsements

Valve updated the Steam Subscriber Agreement today, adding a few mundane things and one particularly interesting clause (via Gamasutra). Users are now required to “clearly indicate the source” when they use any Steam service to “promote or endorse a product, service or event” in exchange for money, free games, or another inventive.

This mirrors a change Valve made back in October for Steam Curators and is the latest attempt to bring new digital services in line with existing Federal Trade Commission regulations about properly disclosing potential conflicts of interest.

The FTC is an arm of the federal government that fights for consumer protection. Their rules have always applied to traditional media outlets, but this is the first time Steam has required its users to disclose conflicts of interest–possibly because of Steam’s Greenlight voting platform and user reviews.

Last month, Valve publicly asked developers to stop offering free games to users in exchange for votes on Greenlight, adding that it puts Valve in a “really uncomfortable position.” A similar issue cropped up in the YouTube community, prompting investigations by Kotaku among others.

“Generally speaking, if an advertiser or a marketer is paying someone to write favorable reviews, the reviewer needs to disclose that,” Mary Engle, associate director for Advertising Practices at the FTC, said to Gamasutra, “and that disclosure should be clear and conspicuous, and should be upfront and easy to see where the viewer won’t miss it.”

You can see the full user agreement, and compare the changes to the previous version here.

  • First Details of Nintendo’s Next System, the ‘NX’

First Details of Nintendo’s Next System, the ‘NX’

Nintendo’s next generation games system is codenamed NX, the company’s chief executive Satoru Iwata has revealed.

Iwata said that the hardware project represents a “brand-new concept”, but didn’t elaborate further. The announcement came moments after Nintendo revealed plans to bring its household games and IP to mobiles and smartphones.

Chief executive Satoru Iwata has revealed Nintendo’s next system is codenamed “NX”.

Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday, Iwata explained: “As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”

It is not clear whether the new hardware represents new strides in the handheld or home console business.

However, the new platform appears to be developed in unison with a new membership (or perhaps subscription) service that will unite Nintendo’s home consoles, its handhelds, as well as mobiles and PC.

Iwata clarified that this new membership service will “encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs.”

He added: “Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses.”

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that it would be closing its Club Nintendo membership program by September. The loyalty program launched in 2007 and supplied free gifts to owners of the Nintendo DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. At the time the company claimed it was “working hard to create a new program.” It appears this new membership service will be its replacement.

  • Nintendo Reveals Plan to Develop Mobile Games

Nintendo Reveals Plan to Develop Mobile Games

Nintendo has brought an end to more than two years of debate and speculation by announcing that it is making games for mobile devices.

The venerable games developer has signed a multifaceted deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA, which includes the creation of “new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which [both companies] will develop specifically for smart devices.”

The corporation clarified that it is not interested in porting older games to mobiles, but in fact wants to create original games “optimised for smart devices”.

Soon the 3DS won’t be the only way to get your Nintendo fix on the go.

Meanwhile, as part of the agreement, Nintendo confirmed it is developing “a core system compatible with a variety of devices including PCs, smartphones, and tablets, as well as Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems”.

It is not clear how this core system works, but it is likely that Nintendo is in fact referring to a digital service that unites consoles, smartphones, PCs, and tablets.

At a press conference on Tuesday, chief executive Satoru Iwata explained that the new membership service will “encompass the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems,” as well as a an all-new hardware system, codenamed the NX.

He continued: “Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses.”

DeNA is notable for running the the Mobage platform, one of the most popular cell phone gaming platforms in Japan, as well as publisher ngmoco, which has released games such as Rolando, Topple, and We Rule.

As part of the deal, Nintendo has bought 10 percent of DeNA, while the mobile games publisher has acquired 1.24 percent of Nintendo.

Goat Simulator Studio Makes An Entry Into Dota 2

Independent game developer Coffee Stain Studios has submitted a Goat Simulator-inspired courier for consideration in Valve’s free-to-play MOBA game, Dota 2. The item can be viewed on the Dota 2 workshop, where users can vote for whether they would like to see the item come to the game.

The item’s description reads, “VALVE PLZ ADD ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ EVERY1 GO VOTE.” Couriers are in-game transports often used in Dota 2 to cart items to players from the in-game shop. There are two versions of a courier; the first travels exclusively on the ground, while the upgraded version flies over terrain.

Goat Simulator is a third-person action game which was first released by Coffee Stain Studios in April last year for PC. The game puts players in the role of a goat who can explore his open-world environment and wreak a ridiculous amount of havoc. Goat Simulator will be released for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 next month.

This Team Completed GTA 5 Heists' Difficult Mastermind Challenge

We already knew that the reward for completing “all Heist setups and finales, in order, with the same team, without losing any lives” in Grand Theft Auto Online’s Heist Mode would net players a cool $10,000,000, But now, it looks like a team has actually pulled it off.

In a video posted to YouTube (via GTAForums.com), a team consisting of GTAV players Desert_Templar, DEVELISH12-9, KoingWolf, and Edub_1234 proved that they completed the impressive feat. Altogether, the team earned $12,000,000 after factoring in other bonuses. KoingWolf wrote in the forum about his experience, saying “It was the most fun I’ve had in GTA Online ever and one of the most stressful challenges I’ve ever experienced in a video game. “

Heists were plagued with frequent server problems at launch, but that seems to have mostly stabilized following a patch issued by developer Rockstar late last week. Now that the game is up and running for everyone, will you try to be part of the next group to conquer this Herculean challenge?

  • UK Games Chart: Grand Theft Auto 5 Returns to Top

On the week that Rockstar launched its Grand Theft Auto Online update, complete with new heist missions, Grand Theft Auto V has climbed again to the top of the all-format UK games chart.

The open-world crime opus has now recorded eight weeks atop the chart–just two weeks shy of the series’ all-time record, which was held by the PS2 title Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Meanwhile, DMC Definitive Edition, the remastered version of Capcom’s 2013 action adventure, enters at fifth spot. The other new entry, Sniper Elite 3: Ultimate Edition, enters at tenth.

It is likely that the top ten will undergo further changes this week, with EA’s Battlefield Hardline release date falling on March 17.
