  • New Killer Instinct Trailer Highlights Fiery Cinder, Teases Next Fighter

Developer Iron Galaxy has released a new trailer for Xbox One fighting game Killer Instinct that shows off the fiery fighter Cinder and even teases the new playable character, Aria.

The video, humorously narrated by Cinder himself, shows off some of his deadly moves. One move allows Cinder to launch fireballs that attach to his foes, which can be detonated at will. “I like this new me: stronger, faster, burn-ier,” he quips in the video.

Cinder will be available in Killer Instinct on April 30 for as part of the Season 2 Ultra Edition, while the character will launch through the Season 2 Combo Breaker expansion on May 6.

Make sure to watch through the end of the video, as it culminates with a brief teaser for the game’s next playable fighter, Aria. A creepy voicover says, “Oh no. Not. Just. Yet.” Outside of her connection with the fictional Ultratech group, no further information about Aria is available.

Killer Instinct, a free-to-play game, was released in November 2013 as an Xbox One launch title. The game’s original developer, Double Helix, was later acquired by Amazon. Now, Iron Galaxy is working on continued support for the game alongside Microsoft.

  • Just Cause 3 Gameplay Revealed in Explosive Trailer

Just Cause 3 Gameplay Revealed in Explosive Trailer

Developer Avalanche Studios has aired the world’s first look at Just Cause 3 gameplay, with a video montage said to be captured directly from a console.

The video showcases the extent of Just Cause 3’s potential for unrelenting destruction, with helicopter dog fights, high-speed car chases, planes ripping through pylon structures, and entire facilities going up in plumes of fire.

Between these scenes of destruction, the short trailer also hints at the exotic splendour of Just Cause 3’s Mediterranean archipelago, Medici. Players are tasked with finding enemy bases within this fictional set of islands, as well as its propaganda billboards and loudspeakers, all of which must be destroyed. As the trailer shows, such obliteration can be approached creatively:

Publisher Square Enix said those who pre-order Just Cause 3 will be given the Weaponised Vehicle Pack, shown at the end of the trailer. This bonus content comes with three “exclusive luxury vehicles primed for action and fully loaded with the firepower to kick-start a revolution.”

Just Cause 3 launches this holiday for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. GameSpot recently visited Avalanche’s offices in Sweden and got to play some of the game. You can read our impressions here.

  • EA Changes Origin Refund Policy After Being Hit by Australian Consumer Watchdog

EA Changes Origin Refund Policy After Being Hit by Australian Consumer Watchdog

Electronic Arts has admitted that its refusal to provide refunds for games purchased digitally via Origin was against Australian consumer law and is amending its refund policy after being warned by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Kotaku Australia reports.

According to the report, the publisher will also be setting up a contact number for Australian consumers who digitally purchased a faulty video game via Origin after January 2012. At the time of writing, users are able to refund a game on Origin within 24 hours after it is first launched, within seven days from the date of purchase, or within seven days from the game’s release date if it was pre-ordered; whichever condition comes first.

“Businesses such as EA selling digitally downloadable goods cannot avoid their responsibilities under the Australian Consumer Law just because they are located outside of Australia,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.

“It is a breach of the Australian Consumer Law for businesses to state that customers are not entitled to refunds under any circumstances. Where a product has a major failure, consumers can insist on a refund or replacement at their choice. Representations that this right has or can be excluded, restricted or modified are false or misleading,” Sims said.

In a statement sent to GameSpot, EA regional public relations manager for Asia Pacific Snezana Stojanovska said, “We’re pleased to have worked co-operatively with the ACCC to resolve the ACCC’s concerns and ensure our players in Australia have the best possible experience when purchasing and playing EA games. In addition to rights available to our players under the Australian Consumer Law, we are also proud to offer our global, industry-leading Great Game Guarantee that allows for digital returns within certain timeframes if anyone is not satisfied with a digitally-downloaded game from EA.” More details on the EA’s Great Game Guarantee can be found on the Origin website.

EA came under fire in 2013 for its refusal to offer refunds for SimCity, a game which launched in March with various server issues that negatively impacted gameplay. At the time, the publisher’s Returns & Cancellations page stated that it did not offer refunds. The Origin Great Game Guarantee feature was introduced in August 2013 to a selected list of countries, which included Australia.

EA is not the only company to face warnings from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Last year Valve came under fire for the refund policy of products on its digital platform Steam, and its alleged conflict with Australian consumers’ right to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law.

  • Five Nights At Freddy's 4 Announced

Five Nights At Freddy's 4 Announced

A new Five Nights at Freddy’s game has been teased by creator Scott Cawthon via an image on his website. According to the image, the game will be out this year on Halloween and is titled Five Nights at Freddy’s 4: The Final Chapter, which insinuates that it will be the final game in the series.

Drag the slider to see the brightened image.

The image features a creepy new take on Freddy Fazbear, the animatronic character featured in the previous games, holding a top hat. The text can be a bit hard to make out without bumping up the contrast, as I’ve done above. No additional details were revealed about the game.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is the most recent entry in the series and was released in March this year. The original Five Nights at Freddy’s was well-received in GameSpot’s review, praised for its dark humour, ability to invoke “heart-pounding terror,” and story delivery. A film adaptation of the game is also in the works with Roy Lee (The Departed, The LEGO Movie) and Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions (the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel) signed on as producers.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s Games are available to purchase on Steam and the iTunes Apple Store.

  • Batman Arkham Knight Features GTA 5-Inspired Character Switch

Batman Arkham Knight Features GTA 5-Inspired Character Switch

The latest trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight has emerged online, ahead of the game’s release date on June 23, revealing a new gameplay feature.

As well as showcasing some of Gotham’s most notorious villains, such as Two-Face and Scarecrow, the video also reveals two Batman sidekicks for the first time. Both Nightwing, Robin, and Catwoman can be seen fighting alongside the Dark Knight, at times performing tag-team manoeuvres.

Publisher Warner Bros. has revealed that Batman: Arkham Knight’s will feature a new gameplay mode, called Dual Play, which lets players “seamlessly switch between The Dark Knight and his allies including Robin, Nightwing, and Catwoman in freeflow combat.” This sounds similar to how Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V allows players to freely switch between the game’s three main characters.

Azrael is also shown in the new trailer.

Arkham Knight will be the first title in the series given an M rating in North America–roughly the equivalent of an 18 certificate in the UK–which suggests a darker tone for Batman’s showdown with his time-worn foes.

In a recent interview, Rocksteady founder and Arkham Knight game director Sefton Hillspoke of the challenges in creating some of the darker content. He said that publisher Warner Bros did a ratings analysis on the game and concluded that certain scenes would be likely to cause “issues.” Hill received an email informing him that these scenes–which remain a mystery–might need to be cut.

Losing these scenes, which are reportedly central to the game, could have “destroyed” the project, Hill said. However, the developer later spoke with a DC Comics executive who agreed to allow the scenes to stay, though it’s unclear if they were altered in any way.

“We’re not including gratuitous blood or swearing,” Hill added.

“We want to deliver a true end with no compromises, and it takes us to some dark places.”

Originally intended to be released in 2014, Batman Arkham Knight’s release date has been delayed again, this time to June 23. The game is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Publisher Warner Bros’ latest fighting game, Mortal Kombat X, has retained its position atop the UK all-format chart.

The game, developed by Chicago studio NetherRealm, set a new sales record last week when it debuted at the top. According to UK sales monitor Chart-Track, Mortal Kombat X is the fastest-selling entry in the series’ 23-year history.

It managed to hold off Grand Theft Auto V, which retains second place due, in part, to its recent release on PC.

No key new releases means the chart shows a familiar composition, with the likes of FIFA, Battlefield Hardline, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare featuring in the top ten. Minecraft sales on PS4 jumped 172%, thanks to a PS4 bundle deal.

    The full top ten follows:

    1. Mortal Kombat X

  • Gears of War HD Remaster Runs at 60fps – Report

Gears of War HD Remaster Runs at 60fps – Report

On Friday, a report emerged that claimed Microsoft was working on an HD remaster of the original Gears of War for Xbox One. Now, additional sources speaking to Polygon have shed more light on the project, which remains officially unannounced.

The site says it has seen a handful of multiplayer screenshots for the new Gears of War remaster, noting that the Xbox One version features better lighting and improved texture quality. The publication adds that multiplayer runs at 60fps.

This frame rate, which previous Gears of War games were not able to achieve, is the staple of Activision’s Call of Duty series. This year’s Halo 5: Guardians will also run at 60fps.

In addition, the Gears of War HD Remaster will reportedly feature new cinematics.

Another source told Polygon that Splash Damage, the UK-based independent studio behind games like Brink and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is handling development on the Gears of War HD remaster. Multiple job postings at the developer reference that the studio is currently working on a “very well known and highly popular AAA title with next gen technology.”

Microsoft acquired the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games last year, putting its internal team Black Tusk Studios to work on a new entry in the action-shooter series for Xbox One. That project is separate from the reported remaster.

As for when Microsoft may officially announce the Gears of War HD Remaster, and maybe Black Tusk’s new project, producer Rod Fergusson previously teased that fans should tune in to E3 in June. For its part, Microsoft has said its E3 presentation this year will focus on first-party games.

The original Gears of War was released in 2006 for Xbox 360 and PC. It has since spawned three major follow-ups: Gears of War 2 (2008), Gears of War 3 (2011), and Gears of War: Judgment (2013). A spinoff called Gears of War Exile–rumored to be a Kinect game–was canceled.

Though it certainly sounds like the Gears of War HD Remaster is in development, Microsoft has not offered any kind of statement whatsoever regarding the project.

  • Konami Responds to Silent Hills Cancellation Claims

Amid mounting speculation that the Silent Hills project may have been cancelled, Konami has issued a statement that suggests the game is, at the very least, undergoing major changes.

When the Silent Hills was first announced, Walking Dead star Norman Reedus was named as its lead actor, lending both his face and voice to the game. But on Monday Konami confirmed to GameSpot that “our contract period with Reedus has expired,” following the actor’s claims on Twitter that the entire project has been axed.

Regarding those rumours, Konami wouldn’t discuss the Silent Hills project specifically, but said: “We will continue to develop the Silent Hill series.”

Grave concerns over the Silent Hills game began in March, when GameSpot revealed that Hideo Kojima–Konami’s most renowned developer and a director on the project–is preparing to leave the company once work on Metal Gear Solid 5 is completed.

In the weeks that followed, a slow trickle of revelations continued to suggest that Kojima Productions’ relationship with Konami has become complicated. In late March, it emerged that Kojima’s regular podcast series was put on hiatus. Then on Sunday, players discovered that the PS4 game P.T.–a playable teaser that was essentially a grand marketing initiative to publicise the Silent Hills Project, would be removed from the PlayStation Store in a matter of days.

Director Guillermo del Toro, who was initially signed as a co-director of Silent Hills, was reported to have said on Sunday that his collaboration with Konami “is not gonna happen.”

  • Limited Edition Halo 5 Xbox One Coming Soon, Developer Confirms

A limited edition Halo 5: Guardians themed Xbox One console is in the works, 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes has confirmed. Posting on Twitter in response to a fan question, Holmes confirmed that although a Halo 5 themed limited edition Xbox One console hasn’t been officially revealed yet, it would be coming soon.

Earlier last month Microsoft revealed the release date for Halo 5: Guardians to be on October 27 exclusively for the Xbox One. It’s likely that the new limited edition console that Holmes referred to will have a similar launch date.

This wouldn’t be the first themed Xbox One console to be revealed. Last year Microsoft announced a Call of Duty: Advanced Warfarethemed Xbox One which launched alongside the game in November. A white Xbox One console was also featured as part of a Sunset Overdrive bundle. A little harder to obtain, Rockstar Games also unveiled Grand Theft Auto V-themed custom Xbox Ones and PlayStation 4’s as part of an exclusive give-away.

Players who pre-order Halo 5: Guardians at GameStop will receive access to the Spartan Locke Armor Set, which cannot otherwise be obtained. The pre-order offer is valid at all GameStop stores in the United States. The Spartan Locke “Hunter-Class” armour will be available to use in the game’s multiplayer mode from day one.

  • PS4's P.T., a Teaser for the Next Silent Hill, Being Removed Soon

PS4's P.T., a Teaser for the Next Silent Hill, Being Removed Soon

P.T., the “playable teaser” for the next Silent Hill game, will be removed from the PlayStation Store this coming Wednesday, April 29. Publisher Konami announced the news in a brief update on the game’s site.

“The distribution period of P.T. (Playable Teaser) on PlayStation Store will expire on Wednesday, April 29, 2015,” the statement reads.

Head to the PlayStation Store here to queue up your free download before it’s too late.

Konami did not provide any kind of explanation for why P.T. is being removed, or what it’s removal might mean for the future of Silent Hills. The decision to pull the PlayStation 4 game from the PlayStation Store comes amid a reported power struggle between Konami and developer Hideo Kojima.

Last month, Kojima’s name was removed from the P.T./Silent Hills website.

Kojima is working on Silent Hills with Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro and The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus. But not much else is known about the project.

Silent Hills was originally revealed at Gamescom 2014 as horror game P.T., which was launched as a free PS4 demo on the PlayStation Store with almost no explanation as to what it was. Kojima later said that he wanted to make Silent Hills so scary that it will “make you sh*t your pants.” He even joked at the time that the limited edition for Silent Hills would come with a fresh pair of pants.
