  • Video Game Hall of Fame Finalists Revealed

Video Game Hall of Fame Finalists Revealed

After a submission and expert voting process, the New York-based Strong National Museum of Play this week announced the finalists for its first wave of inductees to its World Video Game Hall of Fame.

Games were evaluated by experts based on “icon-status, longevity, geographical reach, and the influence it has had on the design of other games, entertainment, popular culture, and society in general.”

You can see the full list of criteria here.

The fifteen finalists are as follows:

Inductees will be announced during a presentation at The Strong Museum in Rochester, NY on Thursday, June 4, at 10:30 AM. They will then be put on display at the museum’s eGameRevolution exhibit.

“The 15 finalists for the World Video Game Hall of Fame span decades, gaming platforms, and geographies–but what they all have in common is their undeniable impact on popular culture and society in general,” The Strong Museum’s Jon-Paul Dyson said in a statement. “Whether it’s the groundbreaking game Pong or a more recent viral sensation like Minecraft, all of these games have helped shape the way that people across the globe play and relate to one another.”

Do you agree with The Strong’s finalists? Let us know in the comments below!

Back in February, GameSpot editors revealed their own picks for games that should be included in the Hall of Fame. My selection, GoldenEye 007, didn’t make the cut.

  • Bloodborne Camera Glitch Turns RPG Into an Old School GTA Game

Bloodborne Camera Glitch Turns RPG Into an Old School GTA Game

A newly discovered Bloodborne glitch shows off the challenging RPG like we’ve never seen it before.

YouTube user PaiNz encountered a strange camera bug that locked the game into a top-down view. Bloodborne, of course, is normally played from a third-person perspective.

It’s reminiscent of older Grand Theft Auto games or the Diablo series. And it’s quite fun to watch.

What do you think? Would you like to play Bloodborne from this perspective? No doubt this new bug would make an already challenging game even tougher. Let us know in the comments.

  • Steam To Get Its First Adults-Only Rated Game

Steam To Get Its First Adults-Only Rated Game

Controversial shooter Hatred will be released for PC via Steam this June, which developer Destructive Creations claims makes it the first game with the Adults Only rating to appear on the digital distribution service. Speaking to Eurogamer, the developer said that the game’s release date of June 1 was chosen so that it would “not interfere with the launch of the biggest game coming out from its native Poland at that time.”

Creative director Jaroslaw Zielinski explained, “Initially we were planning to announce the release date for Hatred on May 19th, but… well honestly speaking we will be playing The Witcher 3 then.”

Hatred was rated Adults Only in North America by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, meaning that it won’t be coming to consoles without the developer making some changes. All three major console manufacturers—Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo—have a policy that forbids the publishing of Adults Only-rated games on their platforms.

The game was pulled from Steam Greenlight in December last year and then reinstated a day later, following an intervention from Valve CEO Gabe Newell. However, Adults Only-rated games have never been made available for sale on Steam before.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage of Hatred.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Confirmed For Dedicated Servers on PC

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Confirmed For Dedicated Servers on PC

The PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops III will get dedicated servers, developer Treyarch has confirmed. Posting on Twitter, Treyarch director of development Cesar ‘pcdev’ Stastny said that the PC version of the game will “use 100% dedicated servers for all ranked matches.”

This should come as little surprise, given that that Treyarch brought dedicated servers in for 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, as well as for the sequel Black Ops 2. Dedicated servers were also brought in for Call of Duty: Ghosts on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the last-generation consoles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 also had dedicated servers, but they were unranked, which meant that the server administrator controlled all unlocks.

Stastny also confirmed that the game will ship with an adjustable field of view slider, as has been the case with previous Black Ops titles.

If the news of dedicated ranked servers has piqued your interest in picking up a PC version of the game, you may want to check out the minimum system requirements listed by Treyarch. The multiplayer mode in Black Ops 3 will have wall running similar to that of Titanfall and “Specialist” characters which possess unique weapons and abilities.

Black Ops 3 will feature a playable female lead character, a first for the core series. The campaign will support up to four players co-operatively. For lots more on the game, check out GameSpot’s in-depth hands-on preview from our recent visit to Treyarch’s office in Santa Monica. You can also see some images in the gallery below.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X Has No Shortage of DLC in Japan

Xenoblade Chronicles X Has No Shortage of DLC in Japan

The first downloadable content for Wii U RPG Xenoblade Chronicles X has been detailed, and there’s quite a bit of it to be had.

Seven DLC packs in all have been revealed on the official website for the game, which released today in Japan (where it’s already April 29). This includes four bundles that each consist of a character, three quests, two combat abilities (Arts, in the game’s parlance), and either a weapon or mech blueprint. You can see photos of each of these–which will cost 500 yen (about $4 USD)–in the gallery below.

The other three packs are referred to as “support DLC” and provide you with additional quests where you can earn more money, resources, or experience (depending on which of the three you’re playing) than you otherwise would in the main game. Each of these three packs is priced at 300 yen (about $2.50).

Players interested in all of this can save 900 yen by picking up a bundle that includes all seven packs for 2,000 yen (about $17).

This first wave of DLC will be available in Japan on May 8. There’s no word yet on whether it will also be available in North America and Europe, though that’s hardly a surprise considered we don’t know when the game is coming outside the vague release window of “2015.”

Xenoblade is being published by Nintendo, which also owns developer Monolith Soft. The company is still feeling its way out in the DLC market, which it’s still fairly new to (and which some of its employees–like Masahiro Sakurai–have strong opinions about). This represents one of its first attempts at DLC alongside games like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8.

Nintendo recently showcased the game during a livestream event. You can catch a replay of that here, and check out our latest preview in the video above.

  • Xbox One's D4 Coming to PC

Xbox One's D4 Coming to PC

Xbox One murder mystery game D4: Dark Dream’s Don’t Die is coming to PC. Director Hidetaka Suehiro, who is perhaps better known by his nickname, Swery, announced the news today in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu and on Twitter.

“Yes. D4 will be release for PC. #ThanksObama,” he wrote.

Back in October 2014, Suehiro said a PC version of D4 was possible. The game is never coming to PlayStation 4, however, according to the developer.

D4 isn’t the first game announced as an Xbox One exclusive to later be released for PC. Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son of Rome both made the jump to computers, while Killer Instinct might as well.

D4 was released for Xbox One in September 2014, and GameSpot gave the title a 7.0. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd praised its ridiculous story and atmosphere, while lamenting its stereotypical characters and several slow stretches that bogged down the pace.

  • Don't Expect a Traditional Microsoft E3 Showing This Year

Don't Expect a Traditional Microsoft E3 Showing This Year

Microsoft is breaking from the mold of past E3 showings and will try something different this year at the marquee industry event to be held this June in Los Angeles. We already knew that Microsoft was planning to focus more on first-party games this year, but now Head of Xbox boss Phil Spencer has teased even more ways in which the company plans to shake things up when all eyes on on the Xbox company.

    Spencer speaking at E3 2015

Responding to a fan’s question on Twitter about Microsoft’s plans for E3 this year, Spencer said Microsoft will have “some interesting changes this year for briefing and the week.”

“I like it when we test ourselves to do better each year.”

Spencer went on to say that Microsoft will talk about not only Xbox One games, but also titles for PC. “We’ll have some of both,” he explained.

This is hardly surprising, as Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system is due to launch this summer with a renewed focus on gaming. Windows 10 will feature a new and improved built-in Xbox app, cross-platform play support for games like Fable Legends, and even a game-streaming application. And if AMD is right, the new OS will launch at the end of July, not long after E3.

Microsoft has not yet announced when it will hold its E3 press conference. But the likely bet would the Monday morning of E3 week. That would mean sometime on June 15, after Bethesda’s the night earlier, and before Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and Sony later in the day.

What are you hoping to see from Microsoft at E3 this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

  • How to Buy a New Xbox One for $175

How to Buy a New Xbox One for $175

Retailer Best Buy has rolled out a new offer where shoppers can buy a new Xbox One for just $175. It’s one of the best deals on Microsoft’s new console we’ve ever come across, and here’s how it works.

Trade in a working Xbox 360 (250 GB) or a PlayStation 3 Slim (120 GB) at a participating store in the United States (see all stores here), and you’ll receive a $175 credit toward the purchase of a new Xbox One. This comes in the form of a $75 coupon towards the console and a $100 Best Buy gift card.

But what it ultimately means is that you’ll be able to buy the $350 console for just $175.

To be eligible for the full trade credit, your console must include an AC adapter/power cord, it needs to be able to power on, and it must not be damaged or have its warranty seal broken. Best Buy also warns that “some stores may have additional limitations” and that there is a limit of one trade per person.

As always, it’s a good idea to call your local Best Buy before heading out. Best Buy’s Xbox One trade-in deal is valid now through May 2, and is good in-store only.

GameStop offered a similar deal earlier in the month, where shoppers could receive a $125 credit toward the purchase of a new Xbox One, meaning they could get the system for just $225. But this deal ended just last weekend.

  • Final Fantasy 15 Skips E3 for Gamescom

Final Fantasy 15 Skips E3 for Gamescom

Following the recent release of the FFXV demo, Square Enix says it doesn’t have time for a major E3 showcase.

Key new details on Final Fantasy XV will not be revealed at this year’s E3 event in June, according to the game’s director Hajime Tabata.

Speaking on the latest Active Time Report–a semi-regular video briefing presented by publisher Square Enix–Tabata explained that the team has instead targeted the Gamescom event in August for its next major promotion and marketing initiative.

“I think most people are expecting a big reveal around E3,” he said in the video embedded below.

“E3 doesn’t give us sufficient time to fully prepare [to release pertinent information about the game]. So I have been discussing with our marketing teams, and we’ve actually been considering Gamescom in August, instead of E3, as the target for the next major reveal.

“So we’ll be taking a break from E3 this year,” he said.

The news comes a week after it was revealed that publisher Square Enix will host its own dedicated E3 press conference on the Tuesday ahead of the official E3 opening. The lack of Final Fantasy XV information at this event will make room for several other big games from the publisher, including Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 3, and a new Hitman title. It’s not certain if Square Enix has another major game to announce at the show.

Sitting alongside Tabata in the video is Square Enix marketing manager Akio Ofuji, who added that Final Fantasy XV will not likely be completely absent from the Los Angeles event.

“I think we’ll still prepare a short trailer for E3, but I think it’ll serve as a segue into our Gamescom plans, and make you all excited for what’s ahead,” he said.

Tabata added that, while the FFXV development team will be relatively quiet in the months of May, June, and July, there are extensive marketing opportunities in the months that follow.

“Promotion for the main title will officially begin at Gamescom. Right after that, there is PAX Prime in North America at the end of August to early September. Then in mid-September, we have TGS in Japan. This group of events will be the platform for our reboot, or restart if you will, towards the release of the main game.”

Elsewhere in the 84-minute video, Tabata and Ofuji outline fifteen feedback points that they are taking on board for the Final Fantasy 15 demo. A recent survey, issued to those who had access to the demo, sought feedback on what areas required more work.

Take a look below for the latest screenshots for Final Fantasy 15.
