  • Grand Theft Auto Series Passes 220 Million Sales Worldwide

As a follow-up to the report from Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive that GTA V had shipped 54 million copies, the company revealed that the franchise as a whole has shipped over 220 million.

To be clear, “shipped” in the context of the public shareholder outreach presentation represents copies of the game sold to retailers for distribution and doesn’t necessarily represent the number of people who actually own the game. Still, the impressive number puts it in the upper-echelon of franchises and is only surpassed by Mario and Pokemon.

According to data on Wikipedia, Mario as a franchise currently sits at number one with 509 million sales. Pokemon is number two with 297 million.

After Grand Theft Auto, the next largest game franchise is Call of Duty, which Activision listed as 175 million back in March.

Sales of Grand Theft Auto V are likely to continue going strong since there still updates in the works, like the Rockstar Editor feature coming to PS4 and Xbox One with the game’s next patch. However, Take-Two offered a statement of “no comment” when last asked about the status of story-based DLC content for GTA V.

  • New Star Trek Sequel Images Leak from the Set

New Star Trek Sequel Images Leak from the Set

With production underway on the next Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, new on-set pictures have been published. Screencrush have released the images, which show actors Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and Sofia Boutella working in front of a green screen in Vancouver where the film is shooting. The images reveal the new uniform that the Enterprise crew will be wearing, plus a new alien character, being played by Kingsman star Boutella.

    Check them out below:

Star Trek Beyond will be the third film since the classic sci-fi series rebooted in 2009, with Fast & Furious and True Detective director Justin Lin taking over from JJ Abrams. In an interview with Deadline, Lin described how his approach would differ from that of Abrams on this latest space adventure.

“There’s still a lot to be mined from these characters,” he said. “They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate.”

Pine and Zachary Quinto will be returning as Kirk and Spock respectively, with support once again from Pegg (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho. Star Trek Beyond is due for release on July 8, 2016.

  • Cult PC Sim Kerbal Space Program Set For Xbox One Release

Kerbal Space Program, a popular PC game in which players create and manage their own mission to leave the planet, has been announced for Xbox One.

The announcement was made by way of a teaser video, which you can watch below, but no further details were provided. The core appeal of Kerbal Space Program involves building rockets and launching them from a space pad. Although this may sound easy, it takes a great deal of trial-and-error.

Once the game’s green humanoids have been loaded onto your ship, blasted off into space and successfully landed on a planet, they must be put to work on completing a mission. Again, this is easier said than done thanks to variables such as fuel, electricity, and structural integrity issues, among others.

In GameSpot’s Kerbal Space Program review we awarded it a 9/10, praising it for its realistic physics, stiff but gratifying difficulty curve, and the many challenging ways to play it provides.

“You will fail at this game. It will demoralize you and it will stress you out, but, more often than not, it will soothe, quiet, and inspire you,” our reviewer said. “Innovative muscles will be stretched here that aren’t stretched very often by games, and more complex moments require a sort of zen beyond being simply twitch-ready for a surprise attack.”

It concluded: “Kerbal Space Program has an almost sacred respect for the tiny miracles involved in space travel, and even at its most difficult, it deserves that respect in return.”

After a high-profile backlash from PC players regarding numerous performance issues with the PC version of Batman: Arkham Knight, Warner Bros. removed the game from Steam and store shelves.

  • Thor Writer to Take on Masters of the Universe

Thor Writer to Take on Masters of the Universe

The classic cartoon and toy line Masters of the Universe may be making a return to the big screen. The project has been in development at Sony for many years, but the studio have now hired Thor writer Christopher Yost to work on a new script, Variety reports.

Yost wrote Marvel’s hit Thor: The Dark World and is working on its sequel, Thor: Ragnorak, which is due for release in July 2017. His success with large-scale sci-fi fantasy has made him an obvious choice to work on a new film version of the fondly remembered ’80s adventure series.

Mattel launched the Masters of the Universe toy line in 1982, creating a mythology about the conflict between good and evil on the planet of Eternia. A cartoon based on the property, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ran for two years, in addition to a comic book series, the spinoff animation She-Ra: Princess of Power, and a number of video games.

In 1987, Cannon Films produced a movie version, starring Dolph Lundgren as muscle-bound hero He-Man. By that point, however, the popularity of Masters of the Universe was in decline, and the toys were discontinued the following year. Subsequent attempts to revive the franchise have included a new toy line and a second animated series in the early 2000s.
