  • Minecraft Adding "Dramatic" New Feature

    Minecraft Adding "Dramatic" New Feature

Sandbox superhit Minecraft will add a new mode of traversal soon–flying. Soaring above in-game worlds will be made possible through a magic cape, developer Jens Bergensten announced on Twitter. He called the cape a “new dramatic feature” that will change the way you play Minecraft.

The cape will come to Minecraft’s PC version through its next snapshot update, presumably landing for the console versions sometime later, though this was not confirmed.

Bergensten also confirmed that the Minecraft capes are not craftable; they can only be found in the game world. In addition, they fold when you land. As you can see in these animated GIFs, when wearing the cape, you can fly like an eagle, dipping and diving at will.

In other Minecraft news, Microsoft–which now owns the franchise–recently confirmed that it will introduce Oculus Rift support for the sandbox game starting in 2016.

  • New Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon Wii U Bundle Is UK's Cheapest Yet

Nintendo has announced a new Wii U bundle that packages the 32 GB version of the console with two acclaimed exclusive games, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon. It will be available across Europe from October 30.

Mario Kart 8 is pre-installed on the console, while Splatoon will be included in the form of a download code, redeemable on the Nintendo eShop. Disc-based versions of the games are not included.

Although Nintendo has not offered a price for the package, UK trade website MCV reports it will be available for £240. With the regular prices of the software factored in, this would make the bundle the cheapest ever released by Nintendo.

This deal comes as Nintendo begins its transition to its next generation console, codenamed the NX, which is expected to be revealed for the first time in 2016. In September, company named Tatsumi Kimishima as its new president, and successor to Satoru Iwata.

Nintendo said it would not discuss the NX until 2016, despite announcing it was in development in mid-2015. At the time, president Satoru Iwata said the NX represented a “new concept.” He added the company was not thinking of it as a “simple replacement for” the 3DS or the Wii U.

The decision to announce the project so early was, according to Iwata, affirmation of Nintendo’s “strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business.”

In March 2015, Nintendo announced it had signed a deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA, which includes the creation of “new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which [both companies] will develop specifically for smart devices.”

  • Marvel's Jessica Jones Goes for Nighttime Walk in Latest Teaser

The build up to the November premiere of Jessica Jones, latest Marvel TV show produced in collaboration with Netflix, has been maintained by a series of teaser clips. Following previous videos entitled ‘Good Morning‘ and ‘Nightcap‘, the latest has been released. It’s called ‘Evening Stroll’ and can be watched here:

The first season of Jessica Jones will feature 13 episodes, and will be released in its entirety on Netflix on November 20, 2015. It stars Krysten Ritter as a failed superhero who has abandoned the crimefighting life to become a private detective in New York. Former Doctor Who actor David Tennant and The Matrix‘s Carrie-Anne Moss co-star, alongside Mike Colter, playing fellow hero Luke Cage, who will also be getting a Netflix show in 2016.

Elsewhere, the second season of Daredevil, Netflix’s other Marvel show, is currently in production. Anticipation is high for the introduction of fan-favourite The Punisher to the series, portrayed by former Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal. Bernthal spoke to CBR recently, and explained how tightly controlled information about the show was.

“They’re so strict about this stuff, like what you can talk about and what you can’t,” he said. “I know that sucks. But it’s just the way it is. That’s all I can really say about it.”

Nevertheless, Bernthal has been tweeting intriguing pictures while filming. When asked about these, he teased: “Whether you think that has anything to do with the show or not, that’s up to you.”

  • Steam Hardware Getting Dedicated Section at GameStop

Steam Hardware Getting Dedicated Section at GameStop

Valve has announced partnerships with major global retailers GameStop (US), GAME (UK), and EB Games (Canada) to create dedicated “Steam Sections” at physical stores later this fall. These sections will showcase all Steam Hardware devices launching on November 10, including the Steam Controller, Steam Link, and Steam Machines. A “variety” of prepaid Steam cards (sales of which have risen every year since they were introduced three years ago, Valve says) will also be featured.

For the holiday season, GameStop, GAME, and EB Games will be the “exclusive non-digital retailer” for Steam hardware. “GameStop, GAME UK, and EB Games are leading retail destinations for core gamers and early adopters,” Valve’s Gabe Newell said. “Creating a ‘store within a store’ across North America and the UK is a significant win for getting the first generation of Steam Hardware products into gamers’ hands.”

The special preorder campaign for Steam Hardware at these brick-and-mortar stores that allowed users get the devices 30 days early “sold out in less than a month.” Everyone who preorders now through November 10 gets free copies of Rocket League and Portal 2.

GameStop merchandising executive Bub Puzon said the retailer expects “strong demand” for the Steam Hardware products.

Pricing for Steam hardware is as follows:

  • Destiny Microtransactions Could Generate "Hundreds of Millions" Per Year

Destiny Microtransactions Could Generate "Hundreds of Millions" Per Year

Bungie’s decision to introduce microtransactions to Destiny could lead to a big upswing in revenue for the shooter, as much as “hundreds of millions” per year. That’s according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz, who says in a note to investors that microtransactions have the potential to “broaden the revenue opportunity for what is already a very successful core franchise for Activision.”

Microtransactions, in the form of in-game currency called “Silver,” will be introduced to Destiny on October 13. Initially, the Eververse Trading Company storefront, as Bungie is calling it, will be stocked with 18 in-game emotes to buy. Bungie stresses that these “won’t impact the action game in any way.” Pricing has not been announced, but Bungie says everyone is getting some free Silver to purchase “an emote or two.”

“While the initial microtransaction offering appears modest in scope, given the devotion of the Destiny player base, we believe microtransactions in Destiny could eventually be a significant revenue opportunity of hundreds of millions of dollars per year,” Creutz said.

He added: “We also assume that Bungie/Activision will focus on offering cosmetic items and refrain from offering items that could impact game balance, the latter of which we believe could have a negative impact on player satisfaction and engagement. We expect that Activision and Bungie will pursue the microtransaction opportunity wisely.”

October 13 is also the same day competitive multiplayer mode Iron Banner makes a three-day return. Match rewards will include weapons and armor, with drop rates higher than they previously were.

Microtransaction systems in AAA games is nothing new. Two recent examples of games that offer microtransactions include Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. In fact, it is rare for such games not to have them, as is the case with Star Wars Battlefront.

What do you make of Destiny adding microtransactions? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Two Mad Mad Sequels Are Planned, Fury Road Director Confirms

Two Mad Mad Sequels Are Planned, Fury Road Director Confirms

This summer’s action-packed blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road may have spent nearly twenty years in various stages of development, but the critical acclaim and impressive global box office have made a sequel very likely.

Director George Miller has confirmed that there are in fact two Mad Max movies currently in development at Warner. As he explained to Top Gear, the lengthy process to get Fury Road on the screen meant that he was able to fully develop the story for future films.

“This film was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade,” he said. “We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30 per cent, so we lost that amount of budget overnight.

“We were then rained out of Australia,” Miller said. “The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artefacts and things like that.

“So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying,” he added. “We’re talking to the studio about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I’m not so sure.”

Nevertheless, Miller stated that another Mad Max might not be his next film. Although there have been recent rumours that he might also direct a future DC superhero movie, Miller told Top Gear that his next picture would be “a small film without special effects.”

“We shot Fury Road for eight months–that’s a lot,” he said. “Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it’s very wearing. We’ve got two more planned, but at some point in the future.”

  • Zelda Symphony Will Perform on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Next Week

Zelda Symphony Will Perform on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Next Week

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will welcome another video game guest next week. CBS has announced that the Tuesday, October 13 show will include a musical performance by The Legend of Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses, Nintendo’s touring concert of music from the iconic role-playing game series.

In addition to a musical performance, Nintendo is using the appearance to promote its upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes. “Highlights” from the game will be shown during the program, presumably during the musical performance.

Actor Elijah Wood is one of the actor guests that evening. He is perhaps best known for his role as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he is also a video game voice actor. Most recently, he voiced one of the leading characters in Double Fine’s adventure game, Broken Age.

The Late Show is proving to be a welcoming place for video games. Zelda’s appearance next week will mark the third time video games have been represented on the program, following PewDiePie and No Man’s Sky developer Sean Murray’s appearances just last week.

The show airs at 11:35 PM EDT on CBS.

TriForce Heroes launches on October 23, while the Symphony of the Goddesses tour runs across the United States and Europe through the end of the year. See a full list of tour stops here.

The update is scheduled for release on October 6 and is largely focused on FOB missions. The new Event FOB missions let players invade another person’s FOB without the risk of retaliation, so you can steal materials and abduct staff without worrying about invaded by your victim later.

FOB Insurance, meanwhile, compensates you for any materials and staff lost when another player infiltrates (outside of the FOB Event missions). Insurance can be purchased with Mother Base Coins, which can be acquired using real world money. The details of the FOB Insurance and other new additions to the game, as written by Konami, can be found below:

    FOB Insurance

    • Your FOBs are always at risk of coming under attack. Now, you can rest easy with FOB insurance (paid service). If you sign up for insurance, then during the insurance period you will be compensated for any materials and staff lost due to rival infiltrations.
    • Staff/materials stolen by the rival will in fact remain on your base, and an identical amount of staff/materials will be handed over to the rival instead.
    • MB Coins are purchased with real money, but free MB Coins are also distributed periodically as login bonuses, etc.
    • The following are not covered by FOB insurance: Staff/items that are not fully your property, such as abducted staff being held in your Brig (FOB), Wounded staff (staff lost due to death or extraction will be compensated), Staff used by you to deploy in defense of the FOB (neither death nor extraction will be compensated), Nuclear weapons.

    New Combat Deployment

    • Get ready for a broader, more varied range of missions available in Combat Deployment (Online). The rewards will diversify to match! Some missions may reward you with extremely high-rank soldiers, and others may provide rare medicinal plants such as Haoma and Digitalis (Lutea).
    • Additionally, the time it takes your units complete their mission can be shortened using MB Coins.
    • MB Coins are purchased with real money, but free MB Coins are also distributed periodically as login bonuses, etc.
    • Deployment time can only be shortened in Combat Deployment (Online) missions. Normal offline missions cannot be shortened.

    New Equipment Grade

    • New weapons and items are on the way, to give you that added edge in missions. Additionally, where the highest possible grade of equipment was previously Grade 6 (★6), following the update you will have access to development projects of Grade 7 (★7).
    • The following are just a few of the new weapons on offer: S1000 Air-S is a Grade 7 pump-action non-lethal shotgun sends enemies flying at close range, with enough power to knock an enemy out cold with a single hit. Arming your FOB security guards with this will give greater punch to your FOB defenses. The Hail MGR-4 is a Grade 7 magazine-fed grenade launcher. Using a drum magazine gives this upgraded weapon a much higher ammo capacity. This is an ideal choice for quick tactical decisions during a firefight; use it to suppress (or take out!) multiple enemies with quick blasts over a large area, or punish enemies hiding in cover.

A versatile launcher that can be used for assault, diversions, or FOB defenses. The AM MRS-71 Rifle upgraded to Grade 7, this 7.62mm semi-automatic sniper rifle provides greater power and accuracy than before. An additional option slot provides extra customisability, so any user can adapt the weapon to a range of scenarios. Equipping your FOB security guards with this is a surefire way to send invaders back with their tail between their legs.

    Night Vision

    • If you avoid being spotted by enemies, and refrain from killing/extracting staff and damaging/extracting containers and equipment, you can now play all the way through an FOB infiltration without the rival player being notified.

    FOB Expansion

    • Constructing new platforms for your FOBs takes a long time, but now you can use MB Coins (paid service) to purchase time reduction and speed things up! The more platforms on your FOB, the more difficult it will be for a rival to infiltrate unseen. MB Coins are purchased with real money, but free MB Coins are also distributed periodically as login bonuses, etc.

    On-Screen UI Improvements

    • Following the update, there will be certain improvements to the way data is displayed on menus such as the Controls and Results screens; for example, detailed breakdowns of espionage points earned or damage suffered due to your FOB being infiltrated. Look forward to a tighter, more refined FOB Mission experience.

    GMP and Material Limits Increased

    • Following this update, the maximum amounts of GMP and materials you can possess will be much higher than before, as additional amounts can now be stored online by the server. You will need to be online to make use of GMP or materials amounts that exceed the local limit (the limit when playing offline). While offline, you will not be able to make use of GMP or materials stored on the server.

    Other Changes

    • Improvements have also been made to other elements, including PF Rating, which indicates the strength of your Mother Base, and sort functions on the mission deployment prep screen. Also, for auto-assigning staff to units, an option for prioritising the Security Team has been added, to make FOB Missions even easier to enjoy. Various balance adjustments and bug fixes have been implemented as well.
