  • Street Fighter 5's Newcomer Laura Looks Electrifying in New Screenshots

Street Fighter 5's Newcomer Laura Looks Electrifying in New Screenshots

Following the leak on October 7, Capcom has officially announced Laura for Street Fighter V, releasing a high-quality gameplay video of the character in action, as well as selection of screenshots.

Laura Matsuda is a Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu user and heir to the famed Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu fighting style. Like Ryu, she’s searching the world for strong opponents to defeat and spread the legend of the Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu style.

Described as the first grappler in Street Fighter history to have a projectile, Laura is designed for those that enjoy getting up close and personal and using command grabs and quick moves to play mind games.

Her V-Skill is called Linear Movement and, by holding either back or forward when pressing the medium punch and kick buttons, she moves in the corresponding direction, allowing her to quickly get in and out. If no direction is held she’ll perform an overhead kick.

Laura’s V-Trigger is Spark Show, during which she enters an electrified state that allows her Thunder Clap projectile to travel further, and for her attacks to deal more stun.

Capcom previously confirmed that there will be four brand new characters coming to Street Fighter V. In addition to Laura, the studio has already revealed Necalli and Rashid, which leaves one more.

In other recent Street Fighter V news, Capcom has announced that the game’s next beta will begin later this month. This second beta will support cross-platform play between PlayStation 4 and PC.

Street Fighter V does not currently have a confirmed release date, but Capcom has said that the game will be out during its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2016. Take a look at a gallery of Laura screenshots below.

  • Find Out When the Wonder Woman Movie Will Be Set

Find Out When the Wonder Woman Movie Will Be Set

Even though the Wonder Woman film isn’t due until 2017, there is still much speculation about what the movie might involve, given the fascinating history of the character. We know that she will appear in 2016’s superhero showdown Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and now new details have emerged about the standalone film.

Den of Geek have reported that the DC movie will in fact take place in three distinct time periods. Their source has revealed it will begin in Themyscira, the fictional island that is the home of Wonder Woman and her fellows Amazons.

The second period is the First World War, more specifically 1916. The third part of the film will take place in the present day, which will presumably link it to the story being told in Dawn of Justice.

Production is due to begin on Wonder Woman next month. It is directed by Patty Jenkins, and stars Gal Gadot as the legendary superheroine. Speaking to Interview magazine earlier this year, Gadot explained what drew her to the role.

“I feel like I’ve been given a huge opportunity to inspire people, not only women,” she said, via The Wrap. “And not because of me but because of who Wonder Woman is and what she stands for. There’s a lot of responsibility. But I have the best team and the best people to work with. It’s going to be an amazing ride.”

The beta officially begins at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT, but it’s available to pre-load now on PC through Origin. We’ll update this post when the beta is released, or you can constantly refresh this download page.

The beta runs through October 12. It’s 7 GB on PS4/Xbox One, while the PC edition weighs in at 11 GB.

Xbox One owners with an EA Access membership will get to play Battlefront first, as it will be available through the subscription program a full five days early.

In other Battlefront news, Sony announced a general PS4 price cut today, which also applies to the special edition Darth Vader PS4 bundle. That means you can get it for $400 instead of $450.

  • League of Legends World Championships to Air on BBC Three

The BBC has announced it will provide live coverage of the League of Legends World Championship quarter finals, starting from October 15.

Coverage of the event, which is being held in Wembley Arena in London, is being delivered as part of a partnership between BBC Three and BBC Sport, who will be utilising the broadcasting network’s events coverage platforms. This has previously been used for coverage of Glastonbury and live sporting events, and includes “live video, pre-recorded video, text, audio, and social commentary.”

“We jumped at the chance to collaborate with BBC Sport and bring this massive UK event to a wider audience,” said Damian Kavanagh, controller of BBC Three. “BBC Three will always experiment with new ways to deliver content that young people want, in ways they want. I think this is an exciting way to cover something millions of young Brits love, in a BBC Three way.”

League of Legends commentator Leigh ‘Deman’ Smith added: “I’m delighted to be part of the BBC’s coverage at Wembley Arena. Worlds has been amazing so far and it’s great to see the BBC getting involved and raising awareness of esports in the UK.”

Coverage of esports events such as the League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike finals has started to pervade mainstream media. Thus far, American media networks have been more active in the move towards competitive gaming coverage.

Most notable of these networks is ESPN, which has broadcasted matches from Dota 2’s The International and aired two hours of Heroes of the Storm on ESPN 2. It is also hiring a gaming editor and an esports editor.

On October 1, the League of Legends World Championship attracted close to one million concurrent viewers on Twitch. While other streaming platforms including YouTube, Douyu, and Longzhu are believed to have reached eight million viewers.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Xbox One Digital Copies Removed Temporarily

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Xbox One Digital Copies Removed Temporarily

Something strange appears to be going on with digital preorder copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops III for Xbox One. The digital version of this year’s shooter has been removed from the Xbox Store and Amazon, a move that Microsoft says is temporary and one that Activision claims it had no hand in doing.

Representatives for Microsoft and Activision acknowledged the game’s removal, but did not offer a specific reason for why it happened. For its part, Microsoft says in a statement to Polygon (via ICXM.net) that the game was removed “temporarily,” while the company is “actively engaged with Activision to return it as soon as possible.” No timetable for its return has been announced.

Pressed for additional details, a Microsoft representative said, “We do not comment on the specific terms of our arrangements with any of our publishing partners.” Digital copies of Black Ops III already preordered from the Xbox Store will still work at launch in November.

Right now, the Black Ops III preorder page on Xbox.com states that the game is “available at your local retailer for preorder.”

A representative for Activision, meanwhile, stressed that “Activision did not remove the digital version of Call of Duty: Black Ops III from the Xbox Games Store.” Amazon has not commented on the matter.

Digital copies of Black Ops III remain available for preorder through the PlayStation Store, Amazon, and PC marketplaces. We’ll have more on this story as it becomes available.

Earlier this year, Activision and Sony formed a new exclusive partnership for the Call of Duty series. Beginning with Black Ops III, all DLC for the franchise will launch first on PlayStation platforms. In addition, this summer’s Black Ops III multiplayer beta was held first on PlayStation 4.

Previously, Call of Duty DLC launched first on Xbox.

  • Goosebumps: The Game Trailer is Actually Quite Creepy in a Lo-Fi Way

Sony has published a trailer for Goosebumps: The Game, an adventure developed by WayForward, the studio behind DuckTales: Remastered and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Although the game is a tie-in for Goosebumps the movie, game director Tom Hulett has said he wanted it to be authentic to R.L. Stine’s source material.

“I’m not satisfied if the game is merely Goosebumps-flavored, or brand-adjacent. I couldn’t sleep if the game felt like anything less than an authentic Goosebumps product with all the hallmarks that entails,” he said.

“I hadn’t really been into Goosebumps growing up, they were just a year or two after my time, but I didn’t want to just research the series off wikis and Netflix. I went straight to the source, diving into a pile of books and reading like my life depended on it.”

Hulett explains the creative process behind Goosebumps: The Game in a lengthy blog post on the PlayStation Blog. In terms of gameplay, it is a first-person point-and-click adventure game that draws inspiration from Shadowgate

Goosebumps: The Game will be released on October 13. The Goosebumps movie, meanwhile, releases on October 16 and stars Jack Black as series author R.L. Stine. The film’s plot revolves around a young boy teaming up with Stine’s niece after his imaginary demons are set free on the town of Greendale, Maryland.

  • Terminator Franchise is Still Alive, Producer Confirms

Terminator Franchise is Still Alive, Producer Confirms

The health of the Terminator franchise has been in question over the past couple of weeks, but it now seems as if there may yet be life in the action sci-fi series.

This summer’s Terminator: Genysis was not the smash hit that Universal had hoped for, taking an underwhelming $89 million domestically. Despite some success overseas–the global gross stands at $440 million–it was reported that the studio had now put the series “on hold indefinitely.”

However, one of the film’s producers has weighed in on the subject at The Wrap‘s Annual Media Leadership Conference in Los Angeles, and confirmed that there were still plans for future Terminator projects.

“We’re ultimately happy with overall worldwide numbers [for Genysis]. Do I wish we would have done better domestically? Absolutely,” admits Dana Goldberg, Chief Creative Officer at Skydance Media. “Happily, we live in the world where the domestic number had a level of importance 10 or 15 years ago. I’m not saying it’s not important, it is–but we have to play to a worldwide market. The worldwide market paid attention, but we’re not taking the domestic number lightly.”

Goldberg explains that the next step for the company would be to explore what Terminator fans liked in the latest film, and what didn’t work for them. “[We will use] data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn’t work for them, so that the next step we take with the franchise is the right one.”

Nevertheless, Goldberg made it clear that the Terminator was very much an active property. “I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as re-adjusting, ” she said. “[But] we are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year, because again, it would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say.”

  • Destiny May Be on Your PS4, Even if You Didn't Buy It

Destiny May Be on Your PS4, Even if You Didn't Buy It

Numerous PlayStation 4 users reported this week that Bungie’s Destiny appeared in their game library, even though they didn’t put it there. Some worried that their account may have been compromised. But as it turns out, this is not a bug or anything nefarious, but rather a promotional effort from Sony.

A Destiny: The Taken King icon has appeared in many users’ in-game libraries (see below). Clicking on it brings you to the store and prompts you to either download the game or its demo. NeoGAF members also point out that the store page Sony directs you to is for the most expensive version of the game.

According to Polygon, this is happening as a result of the PS4’s ability to deliver “personalized, curated content” through automatic downloads.

“The PS4 system has the ability to learn about your preferences,” reads a line on the PS4 website. “It will learn your likes and dislikes, allowing you to discover content pre-loaded and ready to go on your console in your favorite game genres or by your favorite creators.”

You can opt out of the automatic download campaign by unchecking “Featured Content” from the Automatic Downloads menu of the PS4 System Settings.

It’s not too surprising that Sony would promote Destiny in this fashion. After all, Sony has said it is treating Destiny like a first-party game, supporting it with console bundles, exclusive DLC, and more.
