Nier: Automata's New Screenshots Show Dilapidated Industrial Area

Square Enix has released five new images for Nier: Automata, the upcoming action-RPG developed by Platinum Games. The pictures give us a look at a couple of android characters from the game and a derelict industrial environment.

Click image to view in full screen

The setting featured in the screenshots was previously shown in a gameplay video that made its debut during the ‘NieR Music Concert & Talk Live’ event. You can watch this, along with another video focusing on two of the game’s key characters, here.

Nier: Automata was announced at E3 2015, where Bayonetta studio Platinum Games was also confirmed as developer. The game is a sequel to Nier, which itself is a spin-off of the Drakengard series.

“Earth has suddenly been invaded by beings from another planet and mechanical life forms with overwhelming power were used as weapons of war which forced mankind to flee to the moon,” Square Enix previously said about the game. “In order to take back the earth, a resistance force of android warriors has been created by humanity to fight these invaders.”

“The world that you see in Nier: Automata is one where androids and mechanised weapons clash in ferocious combat in a barren and deserted wasteland. It’s set after the original game but the story is written in a way which means you don’t have to have played the first one.”

Producer Yosuke Saito said “Nier struck a chord with many passionate gamers,” and this response was “so special that we felt compelled to heed the fans’ call for a follow-up.”

He added: “To create the ultimate action-RPG, it dawned on me that a collaboration between Platinum Games and Square Enix would be a dream come true.”

  • Overwatch-Branded Truck Gets in Accident at PAX

Overwatch-Branded Truck Gets in Accident at PAX

While the Overwatch Uber cars provided a a stylish way to get around the PAX East convention this weekend, it’s less impressive when one of them gets into a fender bender. A Ford F650 Supertruck bearing the Overwatch Solider: 76 branding hit the side of a car outside of the convention center late yesterday evening (via Shacknews).

The moment was captured by Gearbox Software’s CEO, president, and co-founder Randy Pitchford. Pitchford was at the convention talking about his studio’s game Battleborn, which is in many ways a direct competitor to Blizzard’s Overwatch.

Just left PAX East and out full house Main Theater show to see a monster truck branded with competitive game run over a civilian car.

    — Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) April 22, 2016

You cannot make this up. They just smashed into the side of the civilian car. What a nightmare for everyone.

    — Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) April 22, 2016

Pitchford noted that, although he tried to help, “They had it sorted. Fortunately, no one was hurt.”

While it wasn’t a severe accident, Pitchford also tweeted out the photo below showing the aftermath of the accident.

We’ve reached out to Blizzard for any comment on the accident, but it seems that otherwise the “Uberwatch” promotion has gone on without any other incident.

  • PC-Exclusive Divinity: Original Sin 2's Multiplayer Is Not What I Expected

The heroes of Divinity: Original Sin II have no shortage of captivating powers. It’s a deep, complex RPG whose systems interact in myriad ways throughout its single-player campaign. So it comes as a surprise that its Arena mode, a turn-based multiplayer offering, finds order in all of the fantastical chaos, despite the added complication of another human player.

“It has the same experimentation and surprises as single-player,” says creative director Sven Vincke. He’s fighting me in the new Arena mode at PAX 2016, and I just won the first match. I think he took it easy on me.

“Okay,” he says, smiling. “Now I’ll actually try.”

The following match is a whirlwind of elemental magic, environmental explosions, and leaping lizard assassins. Divinity: Original Sin II, like its predecessor, is about nuanced RPG combat, and its PvP mode is no different. There are numerous things to consider when planning your next move: does that pillar block my ranger’s line of sight? Can my flame arrow reach that puddle of oil? Will cursing the ground beneath my opponent box me into a corner during future turns?

As it turns out, I was right. Vincke is already three steps ahead of me. Despite my mage’s lightning barrage and my Ranger’s poisonous arrows, the creative director just stunned both of my characters during his turn, leaving them open to subsequent attacks that chain fire, ice, and earth into a collage of elemental damage.

“It’s like chess,” Vincke tells me. “Always be thinking about what’s coming next.”

So when he casts Shackles of Pain, ensuring my mage will receive damage each time his ranger does, I stop to think: what’s the best way to keep my mage safe? A stunning arrow is the simplest solution, and as his ranger slumps unconscious to the ground, Vincke almost sounds impressed. “Interesting choice.”

There’s also the concern of positioning: characters get an elevation bonus when attacking from a higher perch than their opponent. While my mage’s lightning bolt is effective from the ground level of the abandoned fortress map, it’s even more dangerous from atop nearby scaffolding.

“Movement can be key, especially when trying to get Source points.” This seemed to be Vincke’s priority early on in matches. By touching puddles of silver liquid, characters gained the aforementioned currency, allowing them to use their more powerful abilities. “Controlling the map is one of the most important things you can do.”

Consuming corpses is an alternative way to gain Source points, and introduces a compelling risk/reward factor. That is, you can choose to sacrifice one of your characters in order to give your more aggressive fighter the powerful attack. Vincke opts for this method toward the end of our match, and with his ranger’s arrow storm ready, attacks my last mage from an elevated pillar. The arrows are powerful enough, but with the added explosion of a nearby barrel, Vincke finishes my party for good.

“That match could have ended in so many ways, but that’s how it worked out this time,” he says. “We have those same surprises and reactions that make single player so appealing. In the player vs. player gameplay, it can be even deeper.”

Multiplayer isn’t what comes to mind when I think of Divinity, which was GameSpot’s PC game of the year in 2014. I think of well written dialogue. I think of engaging characters. I think of long adventures across dangerous lands.

But because of the team’s towering Kickstarter campaign, Original Sin II is becoming more than just a single-player RPG, complete with what seems to be a nuanced multiplayer component. That means there will be more ways to experiment with the game’s complex combat when it releases later this year. And that’s not a bad thing.

  • Warcraft Movie Will "Veer Off" Lore in Some Sections, Director Says

Warcraft Movie Will "Veer Off" Lore in Some Sections, Director Says

The upcoming Warcraft movie from Legendary and Blizzard will “veer off” from the game’s true lore in some sequences, director Duncan Jones said today during a panel at PAX East.

He did not specify any sections in particular where this will happen, but stressed that anytime it does, it’s with the full support of Legendary and Blizzard.

Whenever changes to lore were made, it was done in such a way to “make for a better movie,” as determined by Legendary and Blizzard, Jones said.

Actor Robert Kazinsky, who plays Ogrim, chimed in as well. He said the changes were made “by people who know how to make a great film and tell a great story.”

Had these changes not been made, Warcraft could have ended up like 1993’s poorly received Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said.

Check back later this weekend for more about the Warcraft movie. The film opens on June 10.

  • Major Pro Gaming League Bans YouPorn's Pro Gaming Team – Report

Major Pro Gaming League Bans YouPorn's Pro Gaming Team – Report

Major eSports organization Electronic Sports League is severing ties with adult website YouPorn’s professional gaming team, Team YP. This is being done in the wake of a new rule that blocks sponsors who are “widely known for pornographic … or other adult/mature themes and products.”

That’s according to an email that ESL management sent to Team YP, according to a report today from GamesBeat.

According to GamesBeat, Team YP tried on numerous occasions to alter its branding and messaging to appease ESL, including changing its logo and name to say YP instead of YouPorn. Additionally, the organization adjusted its SEO so that when people searched for Team YP on Google, they wound up at a safe-for-work Team YP site and not the XXX site.

“I am disappointed that Team YP’s growth is being stunted by this decision, not to mention the effect that this will have on our roster of players,” Team YP manager Claire Fisher told GamesBeat. “While for some, our participation in eSports has been controversial, stopping our players from competing because they are sponsored by us, in spite of Team YP operating as a completely SFW brand, clearly separated from any adult content, seems unfair to say the least.”

The ESL has not responded to GamesBeat’s request for comment, while GameSpot was also unable to reach the company at press time. For lots more on this story, head to GamesBeat to read the full report.

Team YP runs teams for games like Mortal Kombat X, Evolve, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, StarCraft II, and Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Writing on Twitter, Team YP said it hopes it can overcome “these obstacles.”

Thank you everyone for your support. Team YP will overcome these obstacles and usher in an age of equal opportunity in esports for all.

  • Mafia 3 Will Have "Ton" of Great Songs, Dev Says

Mafia 3 Will Have "Ton" of Great Songs, Dev Says

Some of Mafia III‘s trailers have included famous songs from the ’60s like “All Along the Watchtower” and “House of the Rising Sun.” Those won’t be the only popular songs featured in the game.

Speaking today during a panel at PAX East, the developers behind the open-world crime game said it will feature a “ton of great music” from the time period, though they did not name any of the songs outright.

The developers also pointed out that music licensing is a tricky business, which is one reason why more licensed songs have not yet been announced. However, the developer is happy about the songs it’s selected, even if it’s not yet ready to talk about all of them.

In addition to the songs mentioned above, Mafia III’s soundtrack will also include Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortune Son” and “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield. The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” will also be featured in the game.

Also during the panel, Mafia III creative director Haden Blackman talked about how developer Hangar 13 considered many different settings for the game, though he did not name any of these. It was important to the developer that the game’s location had things that the mob could take hold of, including industry, tourism, and entertainment.

Hangar 13 ultimately settled on New Orleans (known as New Bordeaux in Mafia III), because it met the requirements listed above, and is also “sexy.” It also feels different from Mafia II‘s Empire Bay, which is important, the developer said.

Additionally, Hangar 13 talked about Mafia III’s driving sequences and cars. There will be many different cars to drive, including muscle cars, jeeps, and even military vehicles. Producer Andy Wilson said each car has its own unique abilities, while he also stressed you should not expect a full “sim” experience.

Also in the panel, Blackman talked about how players can choose how they want to play Mafia III; the design mantra is “every player’s story is unique.” As such, players can choose how they want to move through the world, taking either a guns-blazing approach or stalking, or something in between.

“There’s no right way to play the game,” he said.

Finally, Blackman teased that Mafia III will feature a series of choices that players can make that result in longer-term ramifications. Even choices between multiple positives can have consequences down the road.

Mafia III will be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 7.

In other recent news potentially relating to Mafia III, it’s been suggested that Rockstar’s rumored Red Dead Redemption 2 may in some way tie in to the game.

  • You Have Probably Never Seen This Tomb Raider Video

Here’s something pretty cool. As part of its PAX East announcements, Crystal Dynamics shared a promotional video for Tomb Raider III that was, before now, only shown during the game’s launch party at the Natural History Museum in London in 1998.

It’s titled “The Trilogy,” and it had been lost until producer Janey de Nordwall found the original digibeta tape recently, apparently. The video was produced by Silver Films and is a good mix of silly and serious. In it, two detectives interrogate a gamer, who explains why Lara Croft is so important to him.

In other Tomb Raider news from PAX, Crystal Dynamics has announced that it’s releasing an album featuring new versions of songs from the first three games, composed by original writer Nathan McCree. Additionally, a “20 Years of Tomb Raider” book is coming out, featuring never-before-seen images, as well as interviews with developers at original studio Core Design and more.

During a panel yesterday, McCree also talked about how the success of Tomb Raider “ruined” Core.

What do you make of this Tomb Raider ’90s video? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Disney Officially Removes Marvel Movie "Inhumans" From Release Schedule

Disney Officially Removes Marvel Movie "Inhumans" From Release Schedule

Confirming reports, Disney has now officially removed the upcoming Marvel movie Inhumans from its release schedule, according to Deadline. It was previously expected to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.

Now it has no release date whatsoever.

This development doesn’t signal the death of the movie, as a script has already been written by Black Panther and Crime Story writer Joe Robert Cole. Now, it’s a matter of when Disney decides to revive the film, though there is no indication as of yet as to when that might be.

This news comes as little surprise, as Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently alluded to a delay for the film, which was at one time planned as part of the company’s Phase 3.0 initiative. Since that announcement in October 2015, the Phase 3.0 release schedule has filled in with Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 2017) and the Ant-Man sequel (July 2018), while a new Indiana Jones movie from parent company Disney is also on the way for July 2019.

“Since we made our initial Phase 3.0 announcement, we added Spider-Man, which was a big joyous coup for us,” Feige said. “We added Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was a big fun continuation of that story for us. Walt Disney Company has announced an Indiana Jones film for right around that same time.”

Asked if the Inhumans film would be ditched altogether, Feige said, “No. It’s a question of when.”

The Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in a 1965 issue of Fantastic Four. Led by hypersonically-voiced Black Bolt, their first self-titled comic line ran from 1975 to 1977. They have subsequently appeared in a variety of limited and ongoing series over the past four decades.
