  • Xbox Boss Praises PlayStation for Uncharted 4

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has been a big proponent of bringing together the Xbox and PlayStation fanbases. In the past he has praised Sony for its press conferences, its success with the PlayStation 4, and even said you’re not a real gamer if you root for one console to fail over another.

Continuing to lead by example, Spencer has sent a message to Naughty Dog and PlayStation’s Shuhei Yoshida on Twitter, congratulating them on a job well done with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Congrats @Naughty_Dog and @yosp on another great Uncharted with #Uncharted4, amazing work.

    — Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) May 6, 2016

In response, Yoshida thanked Spencer for his praise.

    @XboxP3 @Naughty_Dog ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ Thanks Phil, see you at E3.

    — Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) May 6, 2016

It’s was a nice little exchange. Game recognise game, as it were.

Uncharted 4 launches on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Reviews for the game have been published, and critics have showered Naughty Dog’s latest with high praise.

GameSpot scored Uncharted 4 a 10/10: “In its writing, in its design, in its understanding of what makes games unique, Uncharted 4 is something to aspire to,” critic Mike Mahardy said. “It’s a shining example. And we’ll be talking about it for years to come.”

Uncharted 4 is the last game in the series Naughty Dog plans to make and the final one that stars Nathan Drake. However, there could be an Uncharted 5.

Here's When New Pokemon Sun/Moon Details Will Be Revealed

More information about Pokemon Sun and Moon will be revealed on May 10, according to developer GameFreak’s Junichi Masuda. In a Twitter post, Masuda said the studio will discuss this year’s entries in the series at 21:00 PM JST (5:00 AM PT).

As previously announced, Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon will be available this holiday on 3DS. Although details on the game haven’t been released, Nintendo has confirmed that–for the first time in franchise history–Sun and Moon will offer traditional and simplified Chinese as language options.

Additionally, they will come with Pokemon Bank functionality, allowing players to move Pokemon wirelessly from Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow (available now on 3DS), as well as Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, X, and Y, to Sun and Moon. More details on how this works are available here.

February 27 was the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise’s debut in Japan in 1996. To celebrate, Nintendo hosted a 24-hour animation livestream event on Twitch, along with releasing classic Pokemon games Red, Blue, and Yellow for the 3DS eShop.

The last Pokemon games in the series for 3DS were Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which came out in November 2014.

  • EA May Have Accidentally Revealed What 2016's Battlefield is Called

EA May Have Accidentally Revealed What 2016's Battlefield is Called

EA is set to announce its latest Battlefield title later today but may have revealed its name a little earlier than planned. This year’s entry will be called Battlefield 5, according to a Tweet from EA Access. Surprise.

The account for EA’s digital game subscription service replied to a follower asking when Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline had been added to the vault of games available to Access customers.

“It was a surprise for members to celebrate the Battlefield 5 event tomorrow,” it replied.

This won’t come as a surprise to many, given the game is being developed by DICE, which usually handles the core, numbered entries in the series.

However, there was some speculation that the series could return to the Bad Company spin-off seires, or eschew the trend of futuristic warfare in favour of something like Battlefield 1943.

Battlefield 5 will be fully unveiled at 4 PM ET/9 PM BST, when EA will provide “a first look at the future of Battlefield” on its Twitch page. EA has shared a brief video teasing what’s in store.

It was previously teased that the Battlefield series will return to “military-style game” and is already shaping up to be a “fun, new Battlefield.”

EA also previously said Mass Effect Andromeda Titanfall 2, and Battlefield 5 would be out during fiscal year 2017, which runs from April 1, 2016 through March 31, 2017.

A teaser for TitanFall 2 has been released and EA plans to fully reveal the game on June 12.

2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront was also developed by DICE, which is responsible for the core entries in the Battlefield series. DICE has laid out plans to release free and paid expansions for Battlefront in the future.

  • GameStop Expecting New PlayStation and Xbox Consoles in the "Next Few Years"

GameStop Expecting New PlayStation and Xbox Consoles in the "Next Few Years"

With rumors swirling about potential new PlayStation and Xbox consoles, GameStop CEO Paul Raines has now come out to say he expects to see “some new consoles in the next few years.”

In an interview with [a]listdaily (via VideoGamer.com), Raines teased that GameStop knows more than it can share on this front.

“We anticipate that we’ll see some new consoles in the next few years,” he said. “We don’t like to talk about that because our partners get upset if we jump ahead, so we’ll let them disclose that.”

Given that GameStop is one of the biggest players in the gaming retail business, it would make sense that the company talks to platform-holders about their plans before information is shared publicly. Recently, Raines revealed the PlayStation VR delay before it was publicly announced.

Whenever new consoles are released, GameStop expects to be “pretty dominant” in selling them, Raines said. This is in part because the company has a network of 46 million PowerUp Rewards members, which it can market to with email blasts and other campaigns.

“Consoles are good for us any way you slice it,” Raines said.

A new, more powerful version of the PS4 codenamed Neo is reportedly on the way. Microsoft, too, is apparently thinking about releasing new hardware, with a recent report claiming a new Xbox device would be announced at E3. Nintendo will launch its new system, the NX, is March 2017.

During GameStop’s Investor Day briefing in April, COO Tony Bartel also referenced upcoming console launches.

“Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent,” Bartel said.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest on news about new hardware.

  • Wii U Was "Disappointing to Everybody," Including Nintendo — GameStop CEO

Wii U Was "Disappointing to Everybody," Including Nintendo — GameStop CEO

It is no secret that the Wii U underperformed for Nintendo. Now, GameStop CEO Paul Raines has come out to say the system, which made use of a tablet-like controller called the GamePad, was “disappointing to everyone.”

At the same time, however, Raines said it would be unwise to bet against Nintendo, considering the creative talent the company employs and its deep roster of big-name franchises.

“Wii U was disappointing to everybody, including them,” Raines told [a]listdaily (via VideoGamer.com). “They made some bold bets, and maybe some of them didn’t work out. But they have a lot of creativity there. They’re a very innovative group of people, so we never count out Nintendo.

“Even now it’s incredible how strong some of their IP is—Pokemon, for example,” he added. “Super Mario, Zelda, all those IPs have a huge, loyal fan base.”

Nintendo’s next system is codenamed NX, and is rumored to be a console/mobile hybrid that is powered by “industry-leading” technology. Raines said the NX “sounds exciting,” and mentioned that GameStop expects to be a top seller for the system when it arrives in March 2017.

“There is some excitement around NX,” he said. “Lately here, we’ve been hearing a lot more buzz than we have in the past. Nintendo is interesting in that they really are able to keep things as quiet as they can for a while. And then they just lost their leader, so they’ve gone through a mourning period and so forth.

“NX sounds exciting. We’re looking forward to it. They’re very innovative in everything that they do. I hope that they come out with something exciting and innovative. I think we’ll be dominant distributor of that platform.”

The Wii U, which was released in November 2012, has sold only 12.8 million systems. Looking ahead, Nintendo recently said it only plans to ship around 800,000 units over the next 12 months.

Raines also commented that he believes GameStop’s push into the smartphone gaming space may end up leading to hardware sales, something the retailer would of course benefit from.

“There are a lot of people who have never played a Super Mario game on a DS. A lot of the kids today have grown up only playing small games on their phones,” he said. “As you introduce that exciting Nintendo IP and those characters, they’re going to want more of that. We think that will push them into our stores to see the big games. They’ll go, ‘Wow, there’s actually a game I can play for months and months instead of a few days.’ That will be good for us. It will be very good for Nintendo, and we’re very positive on it.”

  • XCOM 2 Alien Hunters DLC Coming; Adds New Mission, Weapons, and "Ruler" Aliens

XCOM 2 Alien Hunters DLC Coming; Adds New Mission, Weapons, and "Ruler" Aliens

XCOM 2 players have a new DLC pack to look forward to next week. Following the Anarchy’s Children pack, the new DLC Alien Hunters adds new campaign content, including a new mission, weapons and armor, and a new update to the Avenger’s Armory called “Hunter’s Lodge.” Players can also expect to go up against three new “Ruler” aliens in combat.

The Rulers include the Viper King, the Berserker Queen, and the Archon King. They appear randomly throughout the campaign after completing the new DLC mission and each have their own tactics. However, the Rulers only show up for a limited time, after which they’ll escape the map and return in another mission later on. You can see what they look like in the gallery below.

The four new weapons include the Bolt Caster, which delivers high damage in single-shots; the Hunter’s Axe, a new blade weapon that can be thrown; the ShadowKeeper pistol, a gun that is guaranteed to hit and conceal you if you kill an enemy with it; and the Frost Bomb grenade, which freezes targets temporarily. The catch with these weapons is there’s only one of each and if a soldier equipped with them dies, you have to carry their bodies to the Skyranger or you’ll lose them permanently.

The new DLC comes with three new armor sets, which you’ll have to create with the Ruler aliens’ corpses. The armor gives you a higher chance of causing the corresponding Ruler’s subordinates to panic–for example, wearing the Viper King’s armor is more likely to scare Vipers. The armor sets also grant unique abilities to the user, such as boosters that let you fly around the map.

Alien Hunters arrives alongside a compatibility patch that also makes general bug fixes, optimizes performance, and balances the single player and multiplayer modes.

You need XCOM 2 to play the Alien Hunters DLC, which releases on May 12 for $9.99. The alien invasion strategy game is only available on PC, Mac, and Linux. Developer Firaxis has said it isn’t opposed to bringing the game to PS4 and Xbox One but said last year that its focus was on the PC version.

Players can also look out for new perks, weapons, and aliens from the studio behind XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s Long War mod. Long War Studios released three mods at XCOM 2’s launch and the Toolbox mod in April, which lets players adjust a bunch of different things including camera rotation, UI, and soldier stats.

Uncharted 4 Honors Former Writer and Franchise Director

A line from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End‘s credit sequence pays tribute to Amy Hennig, the action game’s former writer and series director, it has been revealed. DualShockers posted the line, in which Naughty Dog thanked Hennig for her contributions to the overall Uncharted franchise.

“With sincere and deep gratitude to Amy Hennig for her contributions to the Uncharted franchise,” reads the line.

Hennig left Naughty Dog in March 2014 after more than a decade with the company. She worked on Uncharted 1-3, and was writing the fourth game. According to a report, Hennig was “forced out” by directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, though Naughty Dog has since denied this was the case.

A month after leaving Naughty Dog in 2014, Hennig joined Electronic Arts where she is now working on Dead Space developer Visceral Games’ new Star Wars project. This game has yet to be formally announced, but is rumored to be an open-world title.

In other news about EA Star Wars games, the company announced this week that Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment is making a new third-person action adventure game in the Star Wars universe.

Uncharted 4 launches on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Reviews for the long-awaited game started showing up, and it has received overwhelming praise, with GameSpot’s review scoring it a 10/10.
