Awesome Art Picks: Tank Girl, Harley Quinn, Cyclops, and More

Each week we search and gather up the coolest comic book art you won’t see in actual comics. The reason you won’t is because professional artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs, and Tumblrs. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out. This is a way to see the artists working on one book draw characters from other comics or publishers.

  • Heroes of the Storm Video Shows Off New Warcraft, Diablo Characters

A newly released Heroes of the Storm video shows off new content on the way to Blizzard’s MOBA, providing us with our first look at its next two characters.

Warcraft and Diablo each have one character featured in the video. The preview of each is brief, but it provides some idea of what to expect from them. Warcraft’s new addition is Gul’dan, who appears to be able to Fear characters in a small area. Diablo’s character is Auriel, who shoots out an attack in a straight line that knocks back and stuns enemy characters (perhaps only when they hit a wall, similar to Diablo’s charge).

As for new skins, additional ones for Gul’dan and Auriel are shown off, as are some for existing characters. Li Ming’s Striker skin dresses her up to look like a volleyball player, complete with new ability effects. Others include Mystic Kingdoms Arthas and Spellbreaker Johanna, making the Diablo III character look like a Blood Elf from Warcraft.

Lastly, we get a peek at some new mounts, like a red-skinned horse, robotic wolf, and fiery versions of the horse and battle beast.

These videos typically aren’t released far in advance of the content featured in them, so we should be seeing all of this in the coming months. More details on the new characters, in particular, should be shared soon.

  • Pacific Rim 2's Release Date Confirmed

Pacific Rim 2's Release Date Confirmed

Pacific Rim 2 finally has a release date. The sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi action movie has been without a confirmed slot since it was pulled from schedules in September last year. But producers Legendary have now revealed that it will hit theaters on February 23, 2018.

    3089005-pacific-rim-151.jpg

Despite the recent hiring of director Steven S. DeKnight and star John Boyega, this is the first official confirmation from Legendary and distributors Universal that the film is still happening. A joint statement reads:

“John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) leads the cast of PACIFIC RIM 2, the follow-up to 2013’s cinematic battle for global domination that took audiences to future Earth’s land, skies and seas and introduced an entirely new kind of warfare. Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Daredevil) directs the next chapter of the film that generated more than $400 million at the global box office, including a strong performance in China. The 3D epic adventure will be produced by returning PACIFIC RIM producers Thomas Tull, Guillermo del Toro and Mary Parent. Boyega joins the production team alongside Femi Oguns.”

Although the first film was indeed a huge success in China, its domestic box office return was more disappointing, making just $101.8 million in the US.

In January, Legendary Pictures was bought by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group, for a massive $3.5 billion. Pacific Rim opened with the sixth biggest gross ever for a Hollywood movie in China, and ultimately earned more than a third of its entire international gross there.

  • Xbox Gets Dedicated App For Automated Gaming Tournaments

Xbox Gets Dedicated App For Automated Gaming Tournaments

Competitive gaming platform FaceIt will soon be available as an Xbox app for users around the world. The platform currently has four million players on PC, where it regularly hosts automated tournaments and ladders for players to compete in. The Xbox app will integrate with existing FaceIt accounts and provide a way for players to connect to the esports organisation’s tournaments on Xbox One, as well as stay up to date with tournament details on other platforms.

Smite will be part of the the FaceIt Xbox app lineup at launch.
Smite will be part of the the FaceIt Xbox app lineup at launch.

The Xbox FaceIt app will launch with support for Killer Instinct and Smite. It will act as an extension of the FaceIt ecosystem, which can already be accessed on PC and mobile. According to FaceIt CEO Niccolo Maisto, one of the app’s key features is its ability to handle the logistics of tournament organisation automatically.

“We make it easy for game developers to integrate it with the platform to make sure they can offer better competitive experience on their game,” Maisto told GameSpot in an interview. FaceIt hopes to serve the needs of smaller communities through its automated tournament system.

“When I say make it easy for example, as a platform, we take care of everything. From creating a competition to getting players into the competition, confirming who’s playing, getting them into the right match at the right time, getting them back into a tournament, and playing the next match. All of this is automated; we take care of all of this as a platform. All statistics are gathered automatically. Matches are configured on the game developer’s multiplayer infrastructure automatically.”

Tournaments will be highlighted in the app according to a user’s location, friends list, which players they follow, and other factors. According to Maisto, the events shown to a user are chosen based on whether they are “most likely to be engaged.” Users can use the app to view a tournament’s information such as who is organising the event, prizes, participants, and the player bracket.

Results are automatically saved, and once a player has completed their tournament match, they will be returned to the FaceIt app, where they are able to see when their next match takes place.

Outside of its competitive gaming capabilities, Maisto stated that the Xbox FaceIt app could also be used as a discovery tool for players looking for gaming communities that suited them.

“It’s not just to play competitions, but to access competitive atmosphere. A place with like-minded players who want to take it seriously, that are somehow a part of the same community as you,” he said.

Microsoft first announced the Xbox Live Tournaments Program at the Game Developers Conference this year. Part of the program includes this partnership with FaceIt, as well as the Electronic Sports League. FaceIt plans to expand the app’s repertoire to include other games.

  • Open-World Zombie Game State of Decay Getting Retail Release on PC

State of Decay 2 was recently unveiled, but the original game is still getting some attention: Nordic Games announced today that it’ll release a boxed version of the first State of Decay on PC.

In a press release, Nordic announced that State of Decay: Survival Edition, which includes the two expansion packs for the game, will come to retail on August 9. It’ll cost $20 and will include a clamshell case, the game on DVD (requires redemption of a Steam code), a poster, and the game’s soundtrack on CD. You can check out a picture of the contents of the release below.

The game originally launched as a downloadable title on PC and Xbox 360, and was later ported to Xbox One. When it first launched in 2013, GameSpot gave it an 8/10, with critic Leif Johnson writing, “State of Decay serves up a near constant barrage of suspense and immersion that leaves even the briefest jaunts away from your home base tinged with the threat of death.”

At E3 2016 this year, developer Undead Labs and Microsoft announced State of Decay 2 with a short trailer. Not much else is known about the game right now except that it’s planned for release sometime next year.

  • If Pokemon Were Canadian

[UPDATE] Artist Darren Calvert has drawn more Canadian Pokemon. The three Pokemon are Moople, a moose made of maple syrup; Newfie, a Newfoundland dog; and Aboot, a joke on how Canadians say “about.” We’ve updated the tweet below to include them. The original story follows.

Canada is a strange land where they pay with “loonies,” drink coffee with twice the amount of sugar and cream, and put gravy AND cheese curds on fries–I know this because I’m from there. Now, an artist has created some Canadian Pokemon based on some of the country’s favourite things. You can see them in the tweet below.

More Canadian Pokémon emerge from the tall grass.#Pokemon #Nintendo #Canada pic.twitter.com/cI5mNOsmua

    — Darren Calvert (@DMACalvert) June 29, 2016

Freelance illustrator Darren Calvert posted the art to Twitter. He took inspiration from some of Canada’s most iconic stuff, such as the loon that appears on the dollar coin, Tim Horton’s Double-Double coffee, and poutine.

Calvert also drew Pokemon based on hockey pucks and SCTV‘s Bob and Doug–there’s even a Pokemon that represents the term “hoser,” which the two comedic characters popularized. As a Canadian, I want to see a whole game based around Pokemon from the True North Strong and Free.

You can check out more of Calvert’s work on his website.

This isn’t the only fan art to imagine Pokemon in a different light. Artist Chris Perez drew Overwatch heroes as Pokemon trainers, complete with the creatures he think they’d have.

Additionally, we’ve seen some excellent fan art of other games recently as well. Ástor Alexander reimagined The Witcher 3 as a noir detective thriller, and it looks amazing.

  • Twitch Launches New "Social Eating" Category, Someone Promptly Eats Cat Vomit

Twitch Launches New "Social Eating" Category, Someone Promptly Eats Cat Vomit

Video streaming behemoth Twitch continues to expand its categories. The site has now launched one called “Social Eating,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a place where you can go to watch people eat things.

Streamer GerstlTV today livestreamed himself eating cat vomit because why not. Below is what he looked like after eating the vomit, apparently. Another user, pokimane, ate so many nuggets that she needed a nap. As of 8:39 AM ET, she’s still napping. Nuggets are good.

    3088472-catvom.jpg

Social Eating is part of the non-gaming Twitch Creative umbrella. You can also watch people doing things like glass-blowing, scrapbooking, and crocheting.

The new Social Eating category isn’t all that popular at the moment. There are fewer than a dozen live channels right now, though there are plenty more archived videos to watch. Head to the Social Eating landing page to see all of them, but prepare yourself for some things you may not be able to un-see.

In other news about Twitch Creative, which launched in 2015, the network airs Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting every Monday on a channel dedicated to the late artist. More recently, Twitch ran a 24-hour marathon of Julia Child’s The Joy of Cooking.

What a time to be alive.

  • Classic Sci-Fi Show Lost In Space is Returning to TV

Classic Sci-Fi Show Lost In Space is Returning to TV

The classic sci-fi show Lost In Space is returning to screens. It has been announced that the iconic series–which was also made into a movie in the 1990s–is being rebooted for Netflix.

    3088473-lost-in-space.jpg

As reported by Deadline, the streaming giant has ordered a ten-episode first season, to screen in 2018. The show has been in development since November last year.

The site states that the new Lost In Space will once again focus upon the adventures of the Robinson family, who are stranded in space light years from home. Neil Marshall, director of such cult films as The Descent, Doomsday, and several episodes of Game of Thrones, is to produce as well as helm several episodes.

The original TV show ran for 83 episodes between 1965 and 1968, and was created by pioneering sci-fi and fantasy director Irwin Allen. In 1998, a Hollywood remake was released, starring Gary Oldman, William Hurt, and Matt LeBlanc.
