GameSpot’s MLB The Show 16 review scored the game an 8/10.

“MLB The Show 16 improves in many ways it needed to, but don’t expect it to feel like a totally new game,” reviewer Brett Todd said. “New features like ShowTime and Conquest, along with steady-if-unspectacular improvements to on-field action, animations, and visuals, make for subtly better game that fans of the franchise will appreciate. Once again, Sony makes it look easy by giving us yet another baseball simulation that not only hits ’em where they ain’t, it clears the fences completely on a regular basis.”

In other news about Amazon, the retailer’s annual Prime Day kicks off tomorrow, July 12. Check back with GameSpot for more on the deals.

  • UFC Sold in Unprecedented $4 Billion Deal

Following this weekend’s UFC 200, it has now been confirmed that the league itself has been sold for $4 billion. The New York Times reports that talent agency WME-IMG has purchased the league with backing from private equity companies such as Silver Lake, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and billionaire Michael Dell’s private investment firm.

An official announcement is expected as soon as later today, July 11, but UFC president Dana White already confirmed the sale to ESPN. According to the sports media giant, $4 billion represents the biggest transaction for an organization in sports history.

The UFC’s main owners, casino investor brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, bought the league in 2000 for only $2 million. They run the UFC under a company called Zuffa (which means “fight” in Italian) and are expected to stay on as minority investors after the deal goes through.

In May, Dana White appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and addressed rumors of a UFC sale.

“We’re not up for sale,” White said, as reported by the Review Journal. “We’re always working on deals and our expansion globally. I’ve been saying since this thing came out, ‘No, we’re not for sale.’ But let me tell you what–if somebody shows up with $4 billion, we can talk.”

Here is what he said today on Twitter after the story broke:

What the sale might mean for the EA Sports UFC video game franchise, if anything, remains to be seen. We have contacted the publisher in an attempt to get more details.

The latest game in the series, EA Sports UFC 2, launched in March for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  • Pokemon Go Reportedly Bigger Than Tinder in US, Helps Nintendo Shares Rise Dramatically

Pokemon Go Reportedly Bigger Than Tinder in US, Helps Nintendo Shares Rise Dramatically

Pokemon Go, the newly released mobile game that challenges players to catch Pokemon in the real world, reached the top of the charts for its release last week. Now, a new report puts the game’s enormity into perspective, claiming it is bigger than dating app Tinder.

According to data from SimilarWeb (via Business Insider), as of July 8, Pokemon Go was installed on 5.16 percent of all Android devices in the US. That number may not seem huge, but there are more than 1 billion Android devices out there today. For comparison, Pokemon Go is well ahead of Tinder when it comes to installs on US Android phones.

Some other impressive Pokemon Go stats are centered around engagement. More than 60 percent of people who downloaded the app are using it every day, the report said. Additionally, Pokemon Go is reportedly closing in on overtaking the well known and widely used social networking site Twitter when it comes to its number of daily active users.

Another standout stat is that, as of July 8, people are using Pokemon Go for an average of 43 minutes and 23 seconds every day. That’s higher than Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook Messenger.

For more, check out the full blog post on the SimilarWeb blog. Bear in mind that these numbers are only for US Android users; the game is also available for iOS devices. Pokemon Go is coming to international markets, such as Canada and Europe, but not right now.

Although Pokemon Go is not made by Nintendo, the game appears to be helping the Japanese game giant’s business significantly. Shares initially rose by 10 percent last week after the game launched. Now, on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Nintendo shares jumped by as much as 25 percent, the biggest single-day increase since 1983, according to Bloomberg.

    — David Ingles (@DavidInglesTV) July 11, 2016

Pokemon Go is developed by Niantic Labs, in collaboration with The Pokemon Company. Nintendo owns a part of that company, which may explain the surging stock price.

The game is free, though there are some items players can spend real-money to acquire. Given the game’s massive userbase, those microtransactions may prove to be lucrative.

In other news about Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs has laid out some of its plans for new features coming in the future such as a trading system and improvements to AR.

  • Just Cause 3 Multiplayer Mod Cancelled

Development on Just Cause 3‘s fan-made multiplayer mod has been cancelled.

Posting on the the project’s forum, lead developer Cameron Foote explained that he was approached by Avalanche Studios, which created the Just Cause series, with an opportunity to join the team officially. As a result, the mod team can no longer dedicate time to it.

“Several months ago, I was approached with an offer I couldn’t refuse: to join Avalanche Studios Sweden as a developer so that I could work on projects present and future,” he explained.

“As part of Avalanche, I’ll be able to bring many of the things you know and love from JC2-MP into future Avalanche experiences, while reaching heights that a mere mod couldn’t facilitate.

“Unfortunately, due to time constraints, neither I or the rest of the team can actively pursue development on JC3-MP; our lives are just too busy to allow for it right now.”

Although developed by a team outside of Avalanche, the mod received support and endorsement after their Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod was so well received.

Addressing the future of the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod, Foote said the team “will still be maintaining JC2-MP where appropriate.”

He continued: “While we’re not actively adding new features, we will fix bugs, maintain stability, and ensure that JC2-MP remains a quality experience for players present and future.

“We’re still searching for solutions to our most prevalent issues (including AMD compatibility without workarounds); hopefully, we’ll be able to make headway in the future.”

Just Cause 3 launched for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in December 2015. You can read GameSpot’s Just Cause 3 review here.

  • Pokemon Go's New Features Detailed; Here's What Updates Will Have

Pokemon Go's New Features Detailed; Here's What Updates Will Have

One of the core elements of Pokemon games–trading–is currently missing from the newly launched mobile game, Pokemon Go. Fans may be happy to learn that the CEO of the game’s developer has now confirmed a trading feature will be introduced through a future update.

“It’s kind of a core element,” Niantic Labs’ John Hanke told Business Insider.

Unfortunately, Hanke did not share any specifics about how trading would work or when the update that adds it will arrive. He did, however, say trading is a logical extension of Pokemon Go’s themes, as it encourages players to come together–in the real world or the virtual one.

Hanke also teased that other new features will include improvements to Poke Stops and Gyms, which the CEO said are now only their “very most basic versions.” The new update will allow players to “customize their functions in other ways.”

    3093029-go2.jpg

Another new feature coming is a global leaderboard system that ranks the world’s best Pokemon Go players. Users can also look forward to improvements to the game’s augmented reality system to make Pokemon look better when blended into the real world.

Finally, Hanke suggested that Niantic Labs might bring Pokemon Go to dedicated AR devices. “That may be a fun thing to take advantage of,” he said.

One of the biggest AR devices coming out is Microsoft’s HoloLens, though it still sounds like relatively early days for that device.

Pokemon Go launched this month for iOS and Android devices in the US. The game’s international rollout has been “paused” as Niantic Labs addresses the server issues.

In other news about the game, a woman reportedly found a dead body while playing Pokemon Go, while police say armed robbers targeted people using the game.

The Mummy is Revealed in New Photos from Upcoming Monster Movie Reboot

The film is set for a June 2017 release, and is being directed by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the first two Star Trek movies in the current reboot series. Russell Crowe is set to make an appearance as Dr Jekyll, and is expected to then reprise the role in a Jeykll and Hyde film.

It has also been reported that that Johnny Depp will star in The Invisible Man, while Dwayne Johnson is rumoured to be in consideration to play The Wolfman. While the titles of any movies beyond The Mummy are yet to be announced, Universal have scheduled further films in the series for April 2018 and February 2019.

In May, Crowe spoke about working with Kurtzman on the upcoming chiller. “He knows how to get something from an idea on the page onto a soundstage and into a camera,” he told Collider. “Sure, I would imagine he’s scared sh*tless right about now, and having a hard time sleeping because he’s got ten million things on his mind right now. But when we started talking about this idea, there were a few things I put up in the air and he picked up on them.

“Those kinds of creative collaborative conversations, if somebody says something that goes off in your mind and that other person bounces off of that, you’re actually in a really good place.”

  • No Man's Sky's 18 Quintillion Planets Take Up Just 6 GB on Disc

No Man’s Sky, a game that its developer says has 18 quintillion planets to find and explore, takes up just 6 GB of data on the PlayStation 4‘s Blu-ray disc.

That figure was provided by Sean Murray, founder of No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games and a programmer. Posting on Twitter, Murray explained much of that 6 GB is actually taken up audio.

For those asking – size of No Man’s Sky on disc is just 6GB. A lot of that is audio (⌐■_■)

    — Sean Murray (@NoMansSky) July 10, 2016

This is likely achieved thanks to the fact that much of the content in No Man’s Sky is procedurally generated, which means there’s less space taken up on disc. Or it could all be witchcraft.

Continuing, Murray revealed on Twitter that No Man’s Sky had passed certification in Europe, United States, and Asia. It is currently being submitted for certification in Japan.

Additionally, the studio is “already busy on Update 1” for the space exploration game. Details on what it will include were not discussed.

No Man’s Sky went gold on July 7 and Hello Games celebrated with a selfie.

No Man’s Sky is scheduled to launch on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK. Hello Games recently settled a three-year legal battle over the No Man’s Sky name, allowing the title to stay the same.

  • Pizza Place Overwhelmed By Five Nights at Freddy's Calls

A real-world pizza place in New Jersey is being overrun by calls from gamers asking if the restaurant has anything to do with the video game Five Nights at Freddy’s. It doesn’t.

Asbury Park Press (via Kotaku) reports that the pizza joint in question, Freddie’s Restaurant and Pizzeria in Long Branch, is seeing its phone lines ring off the hook–but not always for pizza orders.

“The calls are from children nationwide, who want to know if Freddie’s is, in fact, Freddy’s Fazbear Pizza, the setting for a popular online video game called Five Nights at Freddy’s,” the report said.

“Freddie’s is trapped in a sea of never-ending telephone calls, and it is hurting business. The restaurant added phone lines. It shifted employees around to handle incoming calls,” the report added. “And its regular customers have had trouble getting through to place their orders.”

The restaurant opened in 1944 and continues to be family-run to this day.

Simply changing its number might be a bad idea for business. New Jersey Restaurant & Hospitality Association president Marilou Halvorsen said, “Think about much business would be lost” if Freddie’s were to get a new number.

“That number has been in existence for so long, and then all of the sudden you change the number and people think you’re out of business. It’s not that easy. Hopefully, it will die down,” Halvorsen said about the huge volume of non-order calls.

How many calls are actually being placed? More than you might think.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said a waitress who has worked at Freddie’s for 34 years. “You can get 200 calls in an hour. It’s very annoying. You try to do your job, and you keep picking the phone up.”

Freddie’s has added new telephone lines to compensate for the huge influx in calls. Additionally, employees examine the caller ID in an attempt to get an idea who wants pizza and who wants to know about fictional animatronic bears.

This Five Nights at Freddy’s problem isn’t unique to Freddie’s in New Jersey. A pizza place in Roseville, California–Fast Freddie’s Pizza & Pasta–is also being inundated with calls about the video game, the report said.

For his part, Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon told the Asbury Park Press in an automated response, “Please do not call any phone numbers that you think may be associated with the game; there are NO phone numbers associated with the game or marketing; all locations are fictional.”

Go to the Asbury Park Press to get the full story.

The first Five Nights at Freddy’s debuted in August 2014 on PC and has since been ported to iOS. Three sequels have been released since, while spinoff Five Nights at Freddy’s World came out in January this year. However, it was removed from sale after complaints that it had been released too early and felt unfinished.

A new game, Sister Location, is due out this fall. You can watch an ultra-creepy trailer for it here.
