  • After Pokemon Go's Huge Success, Hollywood Racing to Make Live-Action Movie – Report

After Pokemon Go's Huge Success, Hollywood Racing to Make Live-Action Movie – Report

In April, we heard about a bidding war for the Pokemon movie rights. Now, it’s been reported that talks are heating up further after the massive success of Pokemon Go.

Deadline reports that “all Hollywood has renewed the chase for a deal to turn Pokemon into a feature film.” The site added that The Hunger Games and Warcraft film company Legendary Pictures is “moving toward a deal” to make a live-action Pokemon movie.

    3093904-poke.jpg

Information is light at the moment, and Deadline stresses that “no deal has been closed.” The April report claimed Legendary was “aggressively” pursuing a Pokemon movie deal, while Harry Potter studio Warner Bros. was also reportedly in the mix.

Warner Bros. has a Pokemon history, as it released Pokemon: The First Movie in 1999 to commercial success; this film was followed by sequels Pokemon: The Movie 2000 (2000) and Pokemon 3: The Movie (2001). These movies were animated, however, while the one studios are reportedly bidding for now would be live-action.

Pokemon Go launched last week and has since become a global phenomenon. On the business side, its release has added $9 billion to Nintendo’s market cap.

  • Alien: Covenant Will Be a "Dark Horror Movie"

Alien: Covenant Will Be a "Dark Horror Movie"

The upcoming Alien: Covenant has attracted an impressive cast, that includes Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, and Demian Bichir. One of the most surprising additions is Danny McBride, best known for comedic roles in the likes of Pineapple Express and This Is the End. However, McBride has now revealed that he won’t be there to lighten the mood.

    3093905-mcbride.jpg

Speaking to Hitfix, McBride explained that he was as surprised as anyone when director Ridley Scott approached him to play a pilot in the movie. “[Scott] starts talking to me about it and starts showing me these diagrams of a spaceship,” he said. “I’m just thinking, as he’s talking, ‘Jesus, this is f**king Alien, he’s talking to me about Alien right now.

“And then my next thought was, ‘Well why would he be interested in me for this? Am I just going to be the silly comic relief?’ And then I got the script and I’m like ‘This sh*t is dark. There is no comic relief in this at all.’ This is a dark horror movie.

“And that was exciting. To be able to step into something like that and to participate in a way that not relying on things I’d done before.”

Alien: Covenant is currently filming in Australia. Last week, a new video from the production was released, showing prosthetic work on a familiar appendage. Previous images have revealed Waterston in character and the insignia for the ship of the title.

The film was originally announced as a direct sequel to 2012’s Prometheus, but has subsequently gone through a couple of name changes to align it closer to the Alien series. It hits cinemas on August 4, 2017.

Ghostbusters Set to Make Strong Box Office Opening

The much-anticipated reboot of Ghostbusters hits theaters this weekend, and early box office predictions are in.

Box office trackers estimate the film will make $45 million-$50 million on its opening weekend, according to Variety. While this won’t be enough for it to topple The Secret Life of Pets from the top slot, it is still more than Sony had predicated for its first three days.

The studio was expecting a more modest $40 million debut for the movie, which is opening on 3,950 screens. The Secret Life of Pets is expected to gross $55 million, following an impressive $103 million take last weekend.

Reviews for the new Ghostbusters have been mixed, ranging from positive notices from the likes of Time and The New York Times, to The Hollywood Reporter‘s declaration that it is an “unfunny mess.” For a full review round-up, click here.

Ghostbusters stars Melissa Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. It is directed by Paul Feig, who also helmed comedy hits Bridesmaids and Spy.

  • The Division Patch Notes Include G36 Nerf and These Bug Fixes

The Division Patch Notes Include G36 Nerf and These Bug Fixes

The Division was offline earlier today, July 12, as developer Ubisoft Massive implemented some changes. Now, servers are back up and the studio has shared the official patch notes. We’ve learned that the G36 assault rifle has been nerfed, while a number of bugs should now be fixed.

The G36 has had its base damage reduced by 15 percent. Ubisoft did not say why it made that change, but it follows a bigger update in June that made some huge weapon balance changes.

    2991624-tctd_1601_web_screenshot_team_street_encounter.jpg

As for the bug fixes, one of these is for a problem where named weapons could not have their talents recalibrated. Additionally, the update should fix a bug where game music would shut off completely when quitting from inside an Incursion.

There is only one PC-specific bug fix mentioned in the patch notes, and it’s for an issue where players could use multiple consumables at the same time.

You can see the full patch notes below, as posted in The Division’s forums.

The Division July 12 Patch Notes:

    • Reduced the base damage of all G36 Assault Rifles by 15%.
    • Fixed a bug where named weapons could not have their talents recalibrated.
    • Fixed a bug where the Megamap would not open for some players.
    • Fixed a bug where using the Evacuation Point in Underground before the new Objective Notification has appeared caused the mission UI to break.
    • Fixed a bug where the AlphaBridge Gloves could miss some of their attributes. Note: this change is retroactive, which means that all attributes on existing AlphaBridge Gloves will be rerolled.
    • Fixed a bug where the game music would stop completely when logging out while inside an Incursion.
    • Fixed a bug where recalibrating the last Talent on the PP-19 submachinegun would not yield a free Talent.
    • Fixed a bug where the Sentry Gear Set bonus would incorrectly apply when using The Showstopper automatic shotgun.
    • Fixed a bug where using a Signature Skill could cause the visual effect to be applied to all nearby players (not just group members).
    • Fixed a bug where weapon talents could stack indefinitely while using the Alpha-Bridge Gear Set 4-piece bonus.
    • Fixed a bug where recalibrating weapon talents would yield a random bonus, instead of the one selected in the UI.
    • Fixed a bug where players would die when returning to certain missions after respawning in a safe house.
    • Fixed a bug where PC players would be able to use multiple consumables at the same time.

  • GTA 5's Next Free Expansion Out Now, Lets You Do Crazy Stunts

GTA 5's Next Free Expansion Out Now, Lets You Do Crazy Stunts

GTA Online’s newest free update has arrived.

Rockstar Games today launched Cunning Stunts, one of the wilder updates to Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer mode to date. As announced previously, this introduces a Trackmania-style stunt mode where you can participate in races high above the streets of Los Santos.

Featured in the update are new Stunt Races, which look pretty wild. These involve players racing through loops and tubes, or zipping off ramps with superspeed thanks to boosts. Players can also drive through massive rings of fire on the courses.

“The jumps, gaps, terrain, and obstacles in each Race are tailored to match the attributes of specific vehicle classes, including new Super cars, Sports cars and Motorbikes,” Rockstar explained. “And of course, racing livery-clad vehicles deserve appropriately tatted and dressed drivers, sporting new motocross gear, racing suits, helmets and a host of other additions.”

Take a look at the trailer above to see Cunning Stunts in action, while some screenshots are available in the image gallery.

Cunning Stunts is one of the “massive, feature-rich” updates for GTA Online that Rockstar announced in May. Another was Further Adventures in Finance and Felony, which came out in June.

In other news about GTA Online, documents in the Leslie Benzies vs. Take-Two lawsuit revealed that the multiplayer mode has already brought in more than $500 million in revenue from microtransactions.

Single-player DLC for GTA V is still under consideration, but the big numbers for GTA Online may explain why Rockstar appears to be prioritizing multiplayer content at this time.

In terms of hardware, Amazon is offering the 500 GB Xbox One Gears of War Ultimate Edition bundle for $260 (note that the new Xbox One S is coming later this year).

Another good hardware deal is for the 500 GB “name your game” Xbox One bundle. For Prime Day, Amazon is also including copies of Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition and Forza Horizon 2, an extra controller (“dusk shadow” color), and a $30 Amazon gift card…all for $280.

  • Pokemon Go Has Reportedly Made $14M Already

Pokemon Go is estimated to have generated $14 million since its launch began on July 5, according to research company SuperData. It notes that this figure puts it ahead of all the other Pokemon mobile titles such as Pokemon Shuffle Mobile, which launched in August 2015. Additionally, Pokemon Go has already outperformed developer Niantic’s last game, Ingress.

One of the key challenges highlighted for Pokemon Go going forward is keeping players engaged. SuperData suggests that the game may not maintain its momentum and suffer a drop-off in interest.

“Just like every other mobile game it will have to face the retention figures after 7, 30, and 90 days,” reads its report. “Chances are we are looking at the mobile games’ equivalent of a summer hit song rather than a revolution in the mobile game monarchy.”

Currently, Pokemon Go is only available in the US, Australia, and New Zealand. According to “people familiar with plans for the game” the game will launch in Europe, Japan, and other Asian nations “within a few days.”

Pokemon Go’s release has also reportedly made a big impact on Nintendo’s business outlook, with shares of the company rising 25 percent in Tokyo. This translates to $9 billion worth of market capitalization, boosting Nintendo’s total market cap to almost $28 billion.

Niantic Labs has laid out some of its plans for new Pokemon Go features coming in the future. These include a trading system and improvements to AR.

Other reports have said Pokemon Go is now bigger than Tinder in the US and is closing in on Twitter when it comes to daily active users.

  • New Spider-Man: Homecoming Pictures Are Early Look At Stunts

New Spider-Man: Homecoming Pictures Are Early Look At Stunts

Production continues on Spider-Man: Homecoming, and another batch of on-set pictures have been revealed on Twitter. These latest images show star Tom Holland in his full Spidey gear, performing some wire-assisted stuntwork and having fun with a bicycle. Check them out below, via ‏@abouttomholland:

Last week Holland celebrated one year until the film’s release with an elevated selfie, while earlier on-set images showed the actor alongside co-star Zendaya.

Spider-man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts. A variety of cast members have been added over the past few weeks, including Donald Glover (Community), Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation), Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys), and Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey). Marisa Tomei will reprise her Captain America: Civil War role as Aunt May, while Robert Downey Jr is expected to make an appearance.

In May, it was reported that Michael Keaton would play a villainous role. Keaton was originally rumoured to be joining the cast earlier this year, but initial talks stalled. As THR notes, Marvel looked at other actors before returning to Keaton.

The film is a co-production between Marvel and Sony, and in a recent interview with IGN, Sony boss Tom Rothman spoke about the meaning of the film’s title. “It’s relevant to the story because it takes place in high school and there is a scene at a homecoming dance,” he said. “I’ve actually seen the dailies of it because we already did the high school shooting of it in the first couple weeks. It’s fantastic! But it’s also a homecoming to Marvel. And a homecoming to the cinematic universe that Spider-Man belongs in.

“So it’s a pretty unprecedented deal between two studios, but we’re really proud of it. And all I can tell you is, those guys at Marvel–I think the technical term is–they know their sh*t.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.

  • See Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Dev's New Gears of War-Like Shooter in Action

Mercury Steam, the developer of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series, showed off its next game during Gamelab Barcelona 2016. Footage of the title, which is called Raiders of The Broken Planet, has been posted online and shows more of the third-person shooter.

The video, which you can watch below, breaks down its key mechanics, which will be familiar to anyone with experience with Microsoft’s Gears of War series. However, it also has some interesting twists on up-close melee combat and character variety. The video is narrated by Enric Alvarez, chief game designer at the studio.

“[With Raiders of The Broken Planet] we’re talking about an adventure. It’s a game with a strong narrative, characters, and conflicts between them,” he explained.

The game’s campaign will be playable online or alone, and Alvarez cited Western movie The Magnificent Seven as the studio’s main inspiration.

“We have a group of characters that are united in a very random manner. They share nothing and are looking for their own stuff, so watch out who you turn your back on.”

The game will also be delivered in episodes, which Mercury Steam says will be offered for “an amazing price.” The money generated from each episode will continue to fund the development of further instalments. This, the studio says, also allows it to “reach gamers without the marketing muscle of a publisher.”

Continuing, Alvarez laid out the main gameplay pillars of Raiders of The Broken Planet. These were cited as “narrative driven rich missions, [playing] solo or co-op, [and] join the enemy.” A key element of the game is giving the player the ability to become bad guys.

The final pillar is a phrase: “You want my stuff? Come and get it.” This speaks to the game’s up-close gameplay. Check out the video for much more on the game.

Raiders of The Broken Planet will be available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Mercury Steam hasn’t announced a release date, but you can apply to join the beta on the game’s official website.
