  • Look at These Early Harry Potter Sketches, Featuring Snape and McGonagall

J.K. Rowling has released a series of her own Harry Potter sketches that give fans a new look at the magical wizarding world in its early days. The illustrations include things like Snape teaching a potions class, Harry peering into the Mirror of Erised, and Professor McGonagall reprimanding Peeves.

These were published on Pottermore, but not in one post, but rather scattered throughout the site. You can see some of these in the tweet below from Harry Potter World UK, while Time discovered even more. If Rowling sketched these at the start of the Harry Potter series, it means they date back to the ’90s.

    — Harry Potter World (@PotterWorldUK) August 23, 2016

Rowling herself recently said that Harry Potter’s story is likely over after The Cursed Child, but clearly she’s not done sharing new insight into the franchise’s characters and locations.

In addition to these sketches, Rowling recently announced three new Harry Potter books, which will debut on September 6. These “bite-sized” books don’t continue Harry Potter’s story, but instead offer new insights into Harry Potter stories, settings, and characters.

The latest Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is the script from the stage play of the same name. It sold four million physical copies in its first week.

Looking ahead, the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, comes to theaters in December. It stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as main character Newt Scamander.

  • No Man's Sky Getting New PS4 Patch This Week

No Man's Sky Getting New PS4 Patch This Week

A new patch is coming to the PlayStation 4 version of No Man’s Sky this week, Hello Games has announced. When it’s released, it will mean that around 90 percent of the space game’s crash issues have been resolved, the developer behind the ambitious space-adventure game said on Twitter.

The new patch, 1.06, is currently in testing and is scheduled to come out this week, Hello Games said, though a specific release date was not announced.

You can expect further patches, too, as part of Hello Games’ effort to fix all crash scenarios on PS4.

“We obviously won’t stop until these issues are 100% resolved,” the developer said (via VideoGamer.com). “Also these patches contain other fixes and improvements too. Thanks all.”

Hello Games also shared some details on how crash-reporting works for No Man’s Sky. Every time the game crashes, a report is sent to Hello Games. Since the game’s launch on August 9, the studio has been collecting these and categorizing them in order of priority.

“This has been incredibly useful, and allows us to know exactly how many people are affected,” it said.

Hello Games has updated the PS4 version of No Man’s Sky at least two other times since launch to fix the crashing problems.

The PC version of No Man’s Sky has not been without its issues, either, including things like performance and frame rate problems in addition to crashes. Hello Games has patched that version a number of times since its release on August 12–and more updates are on the way.

As detailed on the game’s Origin page, it will cost $49.99/£39.99 and the first expansion for is called “They Shall Not Pass.” It will introduce the French army to DICE’s large-scale World War I shooter from March 2017.

“Scout ahead with a two-week head start on four themed expansion packs. And France joins the fight in all new multiplayer maps,” reads the product description. Following this, another expansion “will bring the Russian Empire into the battle.”

Items such as weapons, dog tags, and skins will be delivered as monthly Battlepacks starting from November 2016.

Each Battlepack is delivered monthly, starting November 2016.”

Battlefield 1’s release date has been confirmed as October 21. This is just a few days before Titanfall 2’s October 28 release date. According to EA, having both games launch alongside each other will strengthen its position in the shooter genre, instead of cannibalising the sales of both game.

“[Shooters are] a giant category in our industry, $4.5 billion, there’s a very broad and diverse set of players who are looking to fulfill different gameplay motivations,” chief executive Andrew Wilson previously said. “Some people play very quick play, some people play more strategic, some people want both in different context.

“We feel we have a really strong position to deliver the broader set of gameplay mechanics as it relates to the first-person shooter genre across two titles. I feel very confident that we are well positioned to do very well in that category in the year.”

  • Xbox Play Anywhere Is a "Tremendous Value," Marketing Boss Says

Xbox Play Anywhere Is a "Tremendous Value," Marketing Boss Says

Microsoft’s new Xbox Play Anywhere feature, which lets you buy a digital game once on Xbox One and get the Windows 10 PC version free or vice versa, represents a “tremendous value.”

That’s according to Xbox boss Aaron Greenberg, who told DualShockers that the goal for the program is to open up games to a new audience to grow the profile of each franchise.

“So that is absolutely exciting,” Greenberg said. “To be able to do that and to say: You’ll be able to play both versions on both platforms without having to pay twice… I think is a tremendous value.”

The first Xbox Play Anywhere game is ReCore, the new title from Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune. Other upcoming ones include Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, and Halo Wars 2. Regarding sales, Greenberg said he anticipates Xbox Play Anywhere titles to sell “pretty well on PC.”

    3079426-2q==-3.jpg

“I think we will see that a lot of gamers, despite us putting them in already pre-defined buckets, most gamers play on multiple devices. They play on the console and on the PC,” he said.

“For me as a gamer, the benefit of, ‘Hey, if I’m at home and I wanna start playing Gears, but then I’m at work, at school, on the road, wherever it might be, and I can continue where I left off in my PC,’ is a tremendous benefit,” Greenberg added. “It gives a lot more value to the games for fans. So we’re excited and we’ll see. It’s something that we’d like to hear people’s feedback about, and hopefully they’re excited about it and they’ll support it, so that we can continue to do it, and other partners will see the opportunity there as well.”

Not everyone has been so happy about Microsoft’s efforts to bring console games to PC, something that Greenberg has already responded to.

The executive went on to say that part of the reason why Microsoft is launching Xbox Play Anywhere is to catch up with what has been the norm in other forms of entertainment for many years now.

“If I buy digital entertainment content today, movies, music, etcetera, it streams across your devices. So we wanted to enable that for gaming, and that’s a consumer benefit,” he explained.

Read the full DualShockers interview here.

Microsoft may be going all-in on its console/PC unification strategy, but it appears Sony won’t follow suit. PlayStation president Andrew House recently said he’s unsure if people would be interested in that.

“Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that,” the executive explained.

In other news about Xbox and PC, Microsoft has said it might release more games on Steam.

  • Blizzard Games Affected By Another DDoS Attack Right Now

Some Blizzard Entertainment games are experiencing connection issues today, August 23, as a result of a DDoS attack against the video game company’s network providers.

Blizzard made the announcement through its support channels today. The tweets came from the US and EU regions, suggesting the DDoS attack is not limited to one region alone.

We are currently monitoring a DDOS attack against network providers which is affecting latency/connections to our games.

    — BlizzardCS (@BlizzardCS) August 23, 2016

It’s not immediately clear which games are affected, though Blizzard said multiple titles are impacted. Additionally, another tweet says Blizzard’s sites and forums are “experiencing issues” right now.

This is just the latest DDoS attack against Blizzard. Earlier this month, a similar attack affected all games accessed through Battle.net, including Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone. As of yet, it remains to be seen if any hacking group is claiming responsibility for this latest attack.

Blizzard has also faced a major DDoS attack in April of this year, with Lizard Squad claiming responsibility at the time. Today’s service interruption comes on the final day of Overwatch’s Summer Games series, which wraps up today at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET.

GameSpot is monitoring this story as it develops, so check back for updates.

  • Death Stranding: Here's Why People Think Mads Mikkelsen Is in Kojima's New Game

Death Stranding: Here's Why People Think Mads Mikkelsen Is in Kojima's New Game

Is Star Wars: Rogue One and Casino Royale actor Mads Mikkelsen in Hideo Kojima’s next game? That’s the question people are asking today after evidence has come to light that suggest he will have some role in Kojima’s first post-Konami game, the mysterious and intriguing Death Stranding for PS4 and PC.

Here’s how it all started. First, Kojima himself tweeted a picture of a man in a motion-capture studio wearing an orange-and-grey hoodie. Then, somehow, this Instagram user published a picture of himself with the actor, who appears to be wearing the same sweatshirt.

    Adjusting. pic.twitter.com/tC8zdjrh9o

    — HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) August 21, 2016

More interestingly, the Instagram user, jmerskine1, says he chatted with Mikkelsen, who reportedly told him that he was acting in a video game from a Japanese developer. He also remarked that “[Mikkelsen] was very intentionally vague…” about what he could say.

Possibly lending even more credence to the thought that Mikkelsen is in Death Stranding is that Kojima himself is a big fan of the actor. In a January 2015 tweet dug up by Eurogamer, Kojima called Mikkelsen his “favorite actor.”

    3116925-instagram.jpg

My favorite actor Mads Mikkelsen’s interview is in “Cut” this month. No many actors who is so cool and sexy in blood.pic.twitter.com/TYTTrnmTRB

    — HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) January 20, 2015

As of yet, Mikkelsen’s involvement in Death Stranding is only a rumor.

He wouldn’t be the first celebrity to have a part in the game, however, as The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus is also in it. Kojima’s last game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, featured Kiefer Sutherland as the main character, Snake.

Death Stranding was announced at E3 2016 during Sony’s briefing. The game is a console exclusive for PS4, but will also come to PC. The game remains very mysterious and we have lots of questions. Don’t expect the game to come out soon, however, as Kojima says it’s still early days.

  • More Microsoft-Published Games Could Come to Steam

More Microsoft-Published Games Could Come to Steam

Just recently, Microsoft announced that Quantum Break is coming to Steam, following its release on Xbox One and the Windows Store for PC. Could more Microsoft-published games come to Valve’s digital storefront in the future? Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said in a new interview Microsoft will put games on Steam “where it makes sense” instead of declaring that all of its games will come to the store.

“Well, from a fist-party standpoint, over the years, we’ve always had titles in the Steam store, from Age of Empires, to Alan Wake, to even more recently we had titles like Ori and State of Decay,” Greenberg told DualShockers. “We have and we’ll continue to look where it makes sense to bring out titles to Steam.”

“We’re excited to have brought Quantum Break there, we know there are fans of the Steam store, and costumers there that we can reach, that will enable the title to have even more success.”

Overall, Greenberg said Microsoft will continue to think about Steam when it’s deciding where to launch its PC games. However, he mentioned again that this will only be “where it’ll make sense.”

    3116924-qb.jpg

Greenberg did not offer any insight into what factors Microsoft takes into consideration when it’s deciding where to release its PC games.

You can read the full DualShockers interview here.

Quantum Break comes to Steam on September 14 alongside a version of the game for physical retailers called Quantum Break: Timeless Collector’s Edition.

The version of Quantum Break coming to Steam will include “all of the latest updates.” Quantum Break’s Steam version and the Timeless Collector’s Edition will sell for $40. In other news about Quantum Break for Steam, developer Remedy Entertainment has confirmed you won’t need Windows 10 to play it.

Greenberg’s comments about possibly releasing more Microsoft-published games on Steam is no real surprise. At E3 this year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said more Steam releases of Microsoft-published games were on the way. Steam has more than 125 million users.
