  • Should You Play Borderlands 2 In VR?

Should You Play Borderlands 2 In VR?

For all its mechanical issues, there is one very crucial reason why Skyrim, another major game that got an after-the-fact VR port, worked so well: It was breathtaking to be in that world. There were dragons and dangers and perils, naturally, but there was also peace, serenity, beauty, and an undeniable sense of grandiosity. These are all things that, unless you’re specifically making a horror game, make a virtual experience worthwhile. The biggest problem, then, with porting Borderlands 2 to VR is that right from its first minutes, Pandora is such an ugly, cruel, obnoxious place that immersion works against it.

That’s the tip of the iceberg as far as Borderlands 2 VR goes, however. By and large, it’s still the same game, with all the problems it’s always had. Story-wise, every aspect of the game either actively insulting you or trying to kill you at every turn with little to no respite can get grating. Gameplay-wise, it is still very much the old MMO-inspired shooter it’s always been, where the goal is more about increasing your stats and collecting better loot than the sheer thrill of killing maniacal wastelanders ad nauseum. Even still, the game has its charms: the sheer variety of weaponry and enemies, the wild comic cel-shaded art style, and a sense of humor that, when it lands, lands big. These are the things that Borderlands 2 VR maintains.

    Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5

Having said that, Gearbox giveth and Gearbox taketh away for this port. The big loss here is that co-op is entirely gone, which is the one thing that made the grind of Borderlands 2 tolerable. Borderlands 2 solo is a frustrating experience the deeper you go, and this exacerbates that problem. On top of that, Borderlands 2 VR is just Borderlands 2–as in, the Pre-Sequel and the DLC are nowhere to be found. Combine all that with the fact that the game’s cutscenes haven’t been rendered in VR, meaning frequent and jarring shifts to Theater Mode, which makes this feel more like a protracted experiment rather than a well-curated, definitive experience meant to stand on its own.

The feeling that the game is just throwing ideas about how Borderlands should operate in VR at the wall to see what sticks extends to the way it controls. There’s only two ways to control the game: the DualShock 4 or the PS Move controllers, which means yes, once again, the often-neglected PS Aim controller has gone ignored in a game that could have been better for its inclusion. Between the two, weirdly enough, the advantage goes to the DualShock, which is mostly using the same control scheme as The Handsome Collection, save for jump and crouch. The PS Move, on the other hand, is a convoluted mess of commands where the only button that adheres to logic is the trigger to fire your guns.

Movement is handled by holding down the Move button and tilting the left controller whichever way you want to move, which is fine for simple traversal, but Borderlands’ enemies are hectic and know how to use cover; a weapon’s accuracy has never been more crucial, and it’s the stat you find at acceptable levels in new guns the least. The DualShock scheme is superior here as well, with aiming handled entirely with the PSVR headset by itself instead of the controller, which surprisingly feels far more intuitive than aiming with your hand. Much of that has to do with how wonderfully comprehensive the options are in terms of customizing your VR experience to scale with your personal level of VR sea legs. If there’s any one thing Borderlands 2 VR gets 100% right, it’s this.

The one other major change to the game is a rather fundamental one: the addition of a slo-mo mechanic called BAMF Time that allows you to slow time to a crawl for a brief period. It’s balanced just well enough so that it doesn’t break the game, and it does make up for VR’s shortcomings, especially in the early, clumsy stage. More than this, it turns out to be just the tool the doctor ordered to deal with some of the more frustrating areas–read: any place where there’s Threshers involved–without having a rage-induced heart attack.

    No Caption Provided

Thing is, even with the net positives, Borderlands 2 isn’t necessarily better with the PSVR involved. The things that make Borderlands appealing mostly boil down to the humor and the meticulous management of your arsenal, neither of which are easier or prettier in VR–Borderlands is still best experienced with the Handsome Collection, which also includes co-op and and hours hours more of Tiny Tina. The things Borderlands 2 in VR brings to the table are all things we’ve seen better executed elsewhere. Pandora ain’t no place for a hero. Even with slo-mo, and the ability to point and shoot with your own eyes and hands, it still isn’t.

As for the game itself, like the book and film trilogy it’s based on, it follows the adventures of Frodo Baggins, an unlikely hero who ends up transporting a ring of great power into the realm of the enemy to see to its destruction. The big differences are that many parts of the game are made of destructible Legos, and it’s suffused with the Lego franchise’s signature brand of humor.

In GameSpot’s 8.5/10 Lego The Lord of the Rings review, Jason Venter wrote, “TT Games and Lego struck gold when they united for Lego Star Wars in 2005, and that rich vein is still yielding worthwhile results. Lego The Lord of the Rings is perhaps the finest treasure that the partnership has yet produced, a compelling mixture of cooperative gameplay, secrets galore, and a story that remains one of the most fantastic that Hollywood has ever captured on film. If you haven’t given the Lego games a chance yet, there has never been a better time to start.”

  • Pokemon Go's First 2019 Community Day Event Announced

A new month is just around the corner, which means Pokemon Go players have another Community Day to look forward to soon. Developer Niantic has announced the first details on next month’s event, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 12, and will feature the final Gen 2 starter Pokemon: Totodile.

Throughout the event, Totodile will spawn much more frequently in the wild than it normally does. Based on previous Community Days, players will also presumably have a chance of finding a Shiny Totodile during the event, although Niantic has yet to confirm this.

Moreover, if players manage to evolve Totodile into its final form, Feraligatr, up to an hour after the Community Day ends, the Pokemon will know a special event-exclusive move that it wouldn’t typically be able to learn. Niantic has yet to reveal what this move is, but it will be announced closer to the Community Day.

In addition to increased Totodile spawns, Niantic will offer a couple of bonuses during January’s Community Day. First, Incubators will be four times as effective as normal, allowing you to hatch Eggs at a quarter of the distance they would typically require. On top of that, Lure modules will remain active for three hours, rather than their standard 30-minute duration.

As usual, January’s Community Day will only run for three hours, and it kicks off at different times depending on what part of the world you live in. You can find the full event schedule for each region below.

In the meantime, Pokemon Go’s third annual holiday event is now underway, bringing a handful of new Gen 4 Pokemon like Bronzor, Snover, and Skorupi to the game. Niantic is also offering different bonuses during the event every few days until it ends on January 2. On top of that, a new Gen 4 Legendary Pokemon, Heatran, has begun appearing in Raid Battles around the world.

  • Fallout 76 Patch Notes Detail Latest Hotfix Update's Changes

Bethesda has rolled out another update for Fallout 76. This week’s patch is fairly minor; it requires no download on PS4 or Xbox One (although PC players will still need to download the update), and it addresses a small handful of issues across all platforms, as well as a couple specifically related to the PC version.

Most notably, Bethesda has resolved a PC-specific bug that could crash the game when you select the “Exit to Desktop” option. Additionally, the developer says it has “fixed a setting that was left in a debug state.” According to the studio, “This could allow out of date clients to connect, breaking gameplay.”

Halo Studio Reveals Master Chief-Themed Prosthetic Arms For Charitable Cause

Halo studio 343 Industries has announced a partnership with the non-profit Limbitless Solutions to provide special Halo-themed prosthetic limbs to kids in need. As the studio explains in a blog post, Limbitless Solutions is a prosthetic maker that specializes in rapid prototyping and 3D printing to make fully functional arms that can grip and gesture, all at a lower cost than many other prosthetics.

Limbitless donates its prosthetics free-of-charge, and the 343 partnership is lending some Master Chief flavor to their options. Beginning sometime in 2019, those browsing the Limbitless selections will be able to select a prosthetic modeled after Master Chief’s Mk. VI armor. A second “multiplayer” variant will let them select the same model with their own color customization.

“One of our core missions here at the studio is to ‘inspire heroes and deliver wonder,’” the blog reads. “Normally, this is most often and understandably applied to the nature of making games… There are, however, times where opportunities to inspire heroes and deliver wonder present themselves outside the scope of game code, cutscene scripts, or sandbox balancing.” The prosthetics are said to be offered to “young heroes who routinely and triumphantly beat the odds.”

The most recent Halo game news we’ve heard was Halo Infinite, which debuted at E3 2018 but without many details. Since then 343 Industries has been dripping out news slowly, regarding the game as a service and Master Chief’s new look. 343 head Bonnie Ross was recently announced as the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences 2018 Hall of Fame recipient.

Get This Free PC Game Before The Price Goes Back Up

Getting new games is great, but paying for them is generally less fun. Between now and December 22, you can cut out the “less fun” part and get the Windows PC game Anno 1602: Creation of a New World (or Anno 1602 AD, as it was known in the US) for free from Ubisoft right here. Additionally, you can sign up to take part in a closed beta for the upcoming game Anno 1800. The beta will run January 31-February 4.

To get your free game, just head to the giveaway page, click the link, and sign in or create an Ubisoft account. Once you do that, the game is added to your Uplay library, where it’s yours to keep and play forever.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4

Anno 1602: Creation of a New World launched back in 1998. It puts you on a ship en route for a new land, where you’ll build a settlement, trade with the natives, and start an army to defend your growing town. Five sequels and numerous spinoffs have come out over the years, with Anno 1800 set for release on February 26, 2019. The original game is currently free to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary.

In GameSpot’s Anno 1602 review, Bruce Grey wrote, “While it can’t boast innovative design or unusual gameplay, 1602 A.D. has a peculiar charm all its own. The game captures the feel of the historical period very well and carries you along without the extreme highs and lows that characterize more fast-paced and violent games. Those who prefer to play action-packed computer games will be disappointed by 1602 A.D., but if you’re looking for a more relaxing game, you’ll find a pleasant diversion in this engaging colony builder.”

If that sounds like your kind of game, make sure to grab your free copy before it goes back up to regular price on December 22.

  • Great Deal On Xbox Game Pass Available Now In The US

It’s not just Xbox One consoles that are on sale right now. Amazon has launched a very good deal on the Xbox Game Pass membership. Right now you can get three months for $20 USD (normally $30 USD) or 12 months for $70 USD (normally $120). Go to Amazon’s Xbox Game Pass product page here to learn more and place an order.

And if you haven’t signed up for Xbox Game Pass yet, you can get your first month for only $1 as part of a special introductory offer.

The Xbox Game Pass deals come in the midst of a big month for the subscription service. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Mortal Kombat X, Pro Evolution Soccer 19, and Spintires: Mudrunner arrived earlier this month, while Ori and the Blind Forest (December 20) and Shadow Warrior 2 (December 20) are coming later this month. Additionally, the brand-new games Ashen and Below launched into Xbox Game Pass earlier this month.

All first-party Xbox games launch into Xbox Game Pass, which means subscribers will get Gears 5, Halo Infinite, and all other exclusives in the time to come at no extra cost.

There are currently more than 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games in the Xbox Game Pass library. The service has been referred to by some as the “Netflix of games,” but Xbox Game Pass titles are downloaded, not streamed. Microsoft is working on a game-streaming service of its own, but right now it’s not incorporated into Xbox Game Pass.

Xbox Game Pass is currently only available on Xbox One, but Microsoft is bringing it to PC in the future. On a longer timeline, the company wants to have Xbox Game Pass on “every device.”

  • Fallout 76 First-Month Sales: Here's How The Game Did

While Bethesda hasn’t made any announcements about how well the controversial multiplayer-focused Fallout 76 did commercially, a report from the NPD Group contains some clues.

The NPD Group’s report for US game sales in November show that Fallout 76 was the fourth best-selling game of November, only behind Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2. While the NPD Group’s reports now contain digital sales numbers, this only applies to some publishers. Bethesda doesn’t share digital game sales, so Fallout 76 ranking fourth with only physical sales accounted for is a more impressive achievement.

Fallout 76’s physical sales in the US in November amounted to the third highest launch-month sales in the history of the Fallout series, only behind Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Critics generally did not enjoy Fallout 76, and GameSpot’s review scored it a 4/10. While Bethesda hasn’t announced any specific sales numbers for Fallout 76, the company said last month that “millions” of people have played the game.

Fallout 76 will be supported with new updates for a long time to come, according to Bethesda. Marketing boss Pete Hines says he believes the game’s servers will stay online until the sun burns out and humankind is left in ashes.

While Fallout 76 might have had a good start sales-wise in November, it did not crack the top 10 list for best-selling games of 2018 so far. Grand Theft Auto V, a game originally released in 2013, has sold better than Fallout 76 this year.

Some of the other game sales highlights for November in the US include:

    • Red Dead Redemption 2 sales after just two months exceed the lifetime sales of Red Dead Redemption 1 by almost 40 percent.
    • Black Ops 4 continues to be the best-selling game of 2018. It is also the second fastest-selling game on PS4 and Xbox One ever, only behind Call of Duty: WWII.
    • Launch-month sales for Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee were the second-highest in Pokemon history, only behind 2000 Pokemon Stadium.
    • Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s launch-month dollar sales were more than 30 percent higher than the launch-month sales of all other Spyro games ever combined, except Skylanders.
    • Hitman 2 didn’t make it into the Top 20 list of best-sellers.
    • Total software sales for the US in November amounted to $1 billion, which is down 15 percent compared to last year. NPD said Black Ops 4’s shift from November to October this year is to blame for the downturn.

On the hardware side, the Nintendo Switch was the top platform during November based on dollar sales, while the PS4 continues to be the leader year-to-date in terms of hardware dollar sales. Another notable takeaway is that, for the first time ever, three console systems sold more than 1 million units each in a November month; the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One each sold more than 1.3 million units during the month. In November 2010, the DS, Wii, and Xbox 360 each sold more than 1 million units, but the DS is apparently not counted as a console platform.

Total hardware sales in the US for November 2018 came to $1.18 billion, which is up 3 percent. Looking at games, hardware, and accessories combined, total US spending on games in November reached $2.7 billion.

  • Life Is Strange 2 Episode 2 Release Date Revealed

Life Is Strange 2‘s second episode, “Rules,” will launch on January 24, Square Enix and developer Dontnod Entertainment have announced. Episode 1, “Roads,” was released at the end of September, so the wait will be around four months between episodes if the follow-up stays on schedule.

In addition to announcing Episode 2’s release date, Square Enix released a live-action trailer featuring Gonzalo Martin, who voices one of the main characters, Sean Diaz. The trailer references a pivotal, emotional scene from the first episode, so be aware of that if you’re worried about spoilers. You can watch the trailer in the embed above.

Additionally, Square Enix has released a plot synopsis for Episode 2, and it confirms that Captain Spirit from the free spinoff is in the game. You can find the full plot synopsis at the bottom of the page.

Square Enix’s Jon Brooke said in a statement that Episode 2 will be a turning point for the five-episode series. “Previous seasons have both had a point that was just, ‘that moment’, that captivated fans from all over the world, and we feel like this will be the one for Life isStrange 2.”

GameSpot’s Life Is Strange 2: Episode 1 review scored the game a 9/10. “Life Is Strange 2: Episode 1 is a triumphant first chapter, featuring a narrative that fearlessly reflects the lives of two Latino brothers living in our politically-charged climate,” reviewer Jess McDonell said.

Life Is Strange 2: Episode 2 “Roads” Plot Synopsis:

“Sean and Daniel’s story continues in Episode 2. On the run from the police following a tragic incident in Seattle and the manifestation of a strange supernatural power, Sean and Daniel Diaz continue their journey into the winter months. As the two brothers struggle against the cold, Daniel gets increasingly ill. Sean decides that they must take the risk and make their way to their distant grandparent’s house to recover and seek shelter.

There, they encounter next-door neighbour Chris Eriksen, a young boy who believes he has powers eerily similar to Daniel’s, and they come face to face with his superhero alter ego, Captain Spirit. As Daniel and Chris are becoming fast friends, it’s up to Sean to make sure Daniel follows a set of rules they agreed on for his power: Never in public. Never talk about it. Run from danger.

Can Daniel successfully hide the truth from the people around them, will the temptation to explore the immense power within him be too much, or will he break the rules in a time of need?”
