Journey To The East – How Games Are Altered Though Localisation For Japan

Spyro-Game-Boy-Advance-English-Vs-JapaneseEver since games have been sold from one country to another, there have always been changes made during the journey. The scope and reasoning behind adjustments to current games are being put under the microscope, however, it’s important to remember that localisation isn’t a one way street. It can be easy to think that Japan gets to play everything unaltered, but as games make their way to Japan from the West they often changed to be made more appealing, more marketable or sometimes simply more acceptable.

  • The Secrets of 1995: A Seiken Densetsu 3 / Secret of Evermore Comparison

The Secrets of 1995: A Seiken Densetsu 3 / Secret of Evermore Comparison

19951995 was a great time for the Super Nintendo, but it was also a strange time for the Super Nintendo. It was the year that the 16-bit juggernaut would see many of its most memorable releases: Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Earthbound, Diddy’s Kong Quest, to name a few. But apart from the sequel to Donkey Kong Country, a lot of the excellent games that came out at this point in time were not worldwide releases. Some regions had to wait much much MUCH longer for 1995’s line-up to come out, while some regions never even saw these games officially. But there are two particular releases that stood out the most to me –Seiken Densetsu 3, and Secret of Evermore.

Maximum Power Up Podcast – Episode 30: SEGA Saturn Part 2

MPU Ep 30 SEGA Saturn Part 2 670x447

The launch of the SEGA Saturn has gone down in gaming history as one of biggest missteps the industry has ever seen. SEGA’s lack of promotion and short sighted hardware specification meant that the the Saturn was doomed failure even as it hit the shelves. As Sony’s Playstation changed the gaming industry with state of the art 3D visuals, SEGA’s 2D powerhouse was left looking like a system that was a generation behind.

Despite it’s short comings it has gone on to be a much loved system of the retro gaming community thanks to a large library of Japanese exclusive titles.

Ultimate Collector's Guide To Sony's Playstation Portable (PSP)

    Collectors-Guide-To-The-PSP

The PSP (Playstation Portable) was Sony’s first attempt to enter the handheld gaming market back in September 1st 2005 (European market), it was competing back then with the Nintendo DS handheld. It had several re-designed models on later years usually aiming to have a sleeker design than the previous version while trying to retain as much feature from the original as possible. Being that this was not a very popular console back then, (NDS proved to be a very strong competitor) many gamers didn’t get a chance to experience some fine games released for this system. Nowadays this portable console can be found at reasonable prices depending on where you live and its games are usually found at good prices as well. I’m providing this guide to give a brief explanation on the various models that were released as well as some excellent games available for this handheld.

  • Sega Announce 'Sonic Mania' 2D Throwback To Sonic The Hedgehog Classics Due 2017

Sega Announce 'Sonic Mania' 2D Throwback To Sonic The Hedgehog Classics Due 2017

Sonic-Mania-AnnouncedLast Night SEGA hosted a 25th anniversary event for their flagship character at San Diego Comic Con where they showcased not one, but two brand new Sonic The Hedgehog games. Fans of the series who have been let down in recent years will no doubt be left with their jaws wide open after this news, as the newly announced Sonic Mania is going back to its two dimensional roots through what can only be described as a remix blending re-imagined classic stages with new zones and gameplay twists.

Set to feature the three playable characters we all know and love, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, Sega’s new retro-style entry is a collaboration between themselves, Christian Whitehead (best known for using his Retro Engine to bring the Mega Drive classics to touchscreen devices), Headcannon and also PagodaWest Games (who also helped with the previous mobile offerings under the direction of Sonic Team’s leader, Takashi Iizuka). Needless to say from the short trailer of the game, Sega may have finally got it right. Having clearly listened to the fans this upcoming release looks set to be everything we’ve ever wanted since the blue hedgehog’s departure from the 16-bit era.

Sonic Mania is due to be released in Spring 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, however, there’s no word on release for any of Nintendo systems as of yet.

As mentioned though, this wasn’t the only news Sega had to offer Sonic fans. The second game announced at SDCC was Project Sonic 2017, another coming straight from Sonic Team who previously worked on Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations. Not much is known about this title, apart from its respective trailer and a release date of holiday 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo NX. To further compliment these two titles too, Sega also proudly announced that Sonic will also be making an appearance in Lego Dimensions too.

BT's Long Lost Super Nintendo ‘Interactive TV’ Service Trial Cartridge Discovered

BT-Super-Nintendo-Digital-Download-Interactive-TV-Cartridge-UncoveredAlthough there seems to be little mention of BT’s involvement with Nintendo in the mid-nineties, it would appear the tele-communications company was trialling a United Kingdom equivalent of Japan’s Satellaview service. Despite little record of BT’s testing, one retro gamer has uncovered the Super Nintendo cartridge which would have served a digital-download based service for the 16-bit system and is looking for answers.

Sega Saturn Copy Protection Broken & New Flash Cartridge In Development

Sega-Saturn-Flash-Cartridge-In-DevelopmentIt wasn’t long after the Dreamcast’s arrival that we began to see unauthorised methods towards booting game backups with ease. Despite this quick turnaround, Sega’s prior console, the Saturn, still remained uncracked and has done up until now. Two decades after the Saturn’s debut the underloved 32-bit powerhouse has finally been broken into, with plenty of promising developments for homebrew and preservationists.

Super-Boss-Gaiden-SNES-CD-HomebrewThe arrival of both the SNES-CD prototype hardware and accompanying BIOS files have amazed countless retro gamers within the community, but more importantly inspired homebrew developers too. While very little appears to be known regarding the true power and capabilities of the unreleased hardware, that hasn’t stopped a team of Super Nintendo programmers from tapping into it.
