  • Fortnite Might Have Helped Kill Paragon, But It's Turned Into A $12 Million Gift For Other Devs

Fortnite Might Have Helped Kill Paragon, But It's Turned Into A $12 Million Gift For Other Devs

Epic Games announced earlier this year that it would close the doors on one of its ongoing projects, the third-person MOBA Paragon. Part of its rationale for doing so was trouble acquiring and retaining players, but the massive success of Fortnite‘s Battle Royale mode–which has required more of Epic’s resources–was also a contributing factor. With a move made today, the success of Fortnite and death of Paragon is suddenly great news for many developers.

In addition developing games of its own, Epic is the studio behind Unreal Engine, which is licensed by numerous companies to create their own games. As of today, Epic has decided to not let the work it did on Paragon go to waste. A “full array” of Paragon’s assets have now been released to all Unreal Engine 4 developers. Epic estimates the cost of building those assets–which include 20 “AAA-quality characters” and their skins, animations, visual effects, and dialogue, as well as environmental assets–at over $12 million, which is an eye-opening figure. And that’s now all in the hands of developers for free from the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

What this means is that UE4 developers can now freely grab those assets and put them to use in their own projects. In addition to what’s already available, Epic will also release even more Paragon assets that cost millions of dollars to produce. These will be released this spring and summer. More details for developers are available here.

It’s an unusual move to see, as developers rarely give away assets even from unreleased projects. Just how developers choose to make use of these assets remains to be seen. You probably won’t suddenly see Paragon characters running around in Friday the 13th: The Game or other UE4 games, but the work Epic has already done may benefit other developers, particularly younger ones who can learn from it.

Paragon remains playable for the time being, but Epic is offering refunds for all purchases ever made in it. Paragon’s servers will shut down on April 26.

  • PUBG Mobile Released For Free In The US And Other Regions

PUBG Mobile Released For Free In The US And Other Regions

The massively popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now available on mobile. Following a round of beta tests in Canada, PUBG Corp. has rolled out the mobile version of PUBG in “many” regions around the world, including the US.

Described as a “faithful adaptation” of the PC game, PUBG Mobile features the same last-man-standing gameplay experience that helped propel the title to become the third best-selling game in Steam history. Like the PC and Xbox One versions, PUBG Mobile pits 100 players against each other on an increasingly shrinking map, with the object being to outlast all the other players.

The mobile version of PUBG was developed in collaboration with mobile gaming giant Tencent. “We are working hard to create an authentic PUBG mobile experience that players new and old will love,” said Chen Jerry, Tencent’s Corporate Vice President. “A lot of [work] went into controls and optimization to give players a smooth and intuitive experience.”

Unlike the just-released mobile version of Fortnite, which is currently only available to select iOS users who have signed up for the invite-only test, PUBG Mobile can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android devices from the App and Google Play stores. Those with iOS can grab the game here, while Android users can download it here.

PUBG Mobile arrives after receiving “large amounts of positive feedback” following Android and iOS beta tests in Canada last week, which took place on March 15 and 16, respectively. However, whereas the mobile edition of Fortnite features cross-play and cross-progression with other versions, PUBG Mobile doesn’t appear to offer either.

  • Sea Of Thieves Release: Servers Are Live

Sea of Thieves is a big release for a variety of reasons. It’s the first big original game from Rare in quite some time, the first big Xbox One exclusive of the year, and the first of Microsoft’s games to launch day and date on Game Pass. Whatever your reason for playing, you’ll be doing so at a different time depending on where in the world you reside. Although it has a release date of March 20, this is an online-only game, and servers go online at various times in different regions.

The first players are actually already online–regions like New Zealand, Australia, and Japan are already in, but you’ll still be waiting if you’re located in the West. Those in the UK won’t get online until late tonight–12 AM GMT on Tuesday, to be precise. In the US and Canada, meanwhile, servers go online at 9 PM PT/12 AM ET, so you’ll actually be able to play on Monday if you’re not in the Eastern Time Zone.

A full schedule for when servers come online can be seen on the Sea of Thieves website. This gradual rollout will hopefully prevent any online connection issues from popping up, but you can keep an eye on the situation with Rare’s server status page.

As noted above, Xbox Game Pass member will get access to Sea of Thieves for free at the same time the game goes on sale for Xbox One and PC. That allows you to play for as long as you remain a Game Pass subscriber. Alternatively, you can get a free copy of the game right now by purchasing an Xbox One X.

Unfortunately, reviewers weren’t granted access to Sea of Thieves in advance of its release, so we don’t yet have a review. You can check back in the coming days for our impressions of the game. In the meantime, check out the 10 things we learned from the recent beta.

    Apart From Everything

Here’s another outstanding short film, featuring two of the most talented up-and-coming actresses around. Tatiana Maslany (from “Heartland”, “Orphan Black”, Two Lovers and a Bear, Stronger) plays a woman that has been gone for two years, including a stint in rehab, who returns to “face the emotional fallout of her disappearance and make amends with the girlfriend”, and her brother. The cast includes Tattiawna Jones and Sergio DiZio. The short film is inspired by J.D. Salinger’s story Franny and Zooey, it’s an homage that becomes something of its own that speaks volumes about the trials and tribulations of love in today’s world. It’s enlivening to see Maslany continue to push herself with even deeper, and more complex performances. ›››

Official Trailer for Xavier Beauvois' World War I Drama 'The Guardians'

    The Guardians Trailer

“She’s a hard worker. As good as any man.” Music Box Films has released the official US trailer for the US release of Xavier Beauvois’ new French film The Guardians, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. This indie drama is set during World War I, otherwise known as “The Great War” at the time, and it’s about the few local women who are left behind to work on a family farm. Everything gets disrupted when the sons return on leave, and “Francine becomes the center of a familial disturbance.” Oh boy. Romance always messing things up. The cast is lead by Nathalie Baye and Iris Bry, and also includes Laura Smet, Cyril Descours, Gilbert Bonneau, Olivier Rabourdin, Nicolas Giraud, Mathilde Viseux-Ely, and Xavier Maly. This looks like a very moving, meaningful film about the power of “love, loss, and resilience.” ›››

  • Brigitte, Overwatch's New Hero, Releases On PS4, Xbox One, And PC Soon

Overwatch‘s 27th character, Brigitte, is coming to the game for everyone across PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 20, developer Blizzard announced today. Brigitte, who is Torbjorn’s daughter, is already available on Overwatch’s Public Test Realm.

Brigitte is an “an engineer with peerless armor-constructing abilities,” and those characteristics shine through in her abilities on the battlefield. Her primary weapon is the Rocket Flail, which has an extended range and can smash multiple opponents at once.

In addition to that, she brandishes a Barrier Shield, which can protect any teammates directly behind her. She can also toss Repair Packs to heal teammates, while her passive ability, Inspire, heals nearby allies over time when she lands blows on enemies. A full list of her abilities, as outlined by Blizzard, follows below.

For more on the newest Overwatch hero, you can check out a lot of footage from the PTR here or watch Brigitte’s origin story trailer here. You can also learn more about her in the latest Overwatch developer update and read about Brigitte’s backstory and special abilities here. Like other Overwatch characters, Brigitte also has a lot of alternate skins–you can see them all here.

    Overwatch – Brigitte Kit Abilities

    • Rocket Flail – Brigitte’s melee weapon has an extended range, enabling her to strike multiple enemies with a single swing.
    • Repair Pack – Brigitte throws a Repair Pack that can heal an ally. Any healing over that ally’s maximum health provides them with armor instead.
    • Whip Shot – Brigitte throws her flail a long distance, dealing damage and knocking an enemy away from her.
    • Barrier Shield – Brigitte deploys a frontal energy barrier to absorb a limited amount of damage.
    • Shield Bash – Once her Barrier Shield is deployed, Brigitte can dash forward to stun an enemy.
    • Inspire – When Brigitte hits enemies with her flail, she also heals nearby allies over time.
    • Rally – Brigitte moves faster and provides all nearby allies with armor that lasts until it’s removed by damage.

  • Avengers: Infinity War Trailer 2 Teases Epic Battle, Watch It Here

The new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is here. The movie will see every major hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe team up to stop the evil Thanos getting his hands on the Infinity Stones, and causing the end of the world. You can see our Infinity War trailer breakdown for all the small details.

The trailer gives a good indication of just how epic the movie will be, with huge battles between the Marvel heroes and Thanos’s armies, and some amazing-looking action. But there’s also plenty of humor, as some of the characters meet for the first time. In particular, it looks like Star Lord and Tony Stark might have an enjoyably spikey relationship. Check it out above.

Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Pratt, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Holland. It hits theaters on April 27. It is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed the last two Captain America movies, and will follow it up with next year’s currently untitled Avengers 4.

  • Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Update Restores Microtransactions, Changes Progression

Star Wars: Battlefront II was heavily criticised for the way it allowed players to pay real money to get loot boxes that could contain items that actually affected gameplay. Some cried out that this represented a pay-to-win situation. It was a lot of bad press for EA. In response to this, EA removed microtransactions from the game completely just before its public launch, with the developer saying it needed more time to adjust them before bringing them back. Today, EA confirmed that microtransactions are coming back in April, though this time around you will only be able to purchase cosmetic items–that is, those that do not affect gameplay. Previously, EA let you pay for an opportunity to get items that gave you a theoretical advantage such as improved grenades or shields.

Before microtransactions return, however, EA is launching an update on March 21 that significantly changes how progression works. Presently, Star Cards and other items that impact gameplay, can be acquired in loot boxes–called Crates in Battlefront II–that you can unlock through normal gameplay progression. But with the new update, the only way to get Star Cards is through standard progression. “If you earn enough experience points to gain a level for that unit, you’ll receive one Skill Point that can be used to unlock or upgrade the eligible Star Card you’d like to equip,” EA said.

If you already acquired Star Cards, the good news is that you won’t lose these when the update comes out. Additionally, all of the extra heroes and weapons you already unlocked will stay with you when the patch arrives.

Regarding Crates specifically, you’ll get these in a number of ways, including logging in every day and completing the game’s various timed challenges. Crates will only include cosmetic items–such as emotes or poses–as well as Credits.

Then in April, EA will launch a new in-game store where you can buy new character customisation options by spending Credits that you earn by gameplay or by spending Crystals that you can get with real money. As an example, EA said you’ll be able to make a Rodian Resistance fighter, which wouldn’t happen in the official Star Wars canon.

Interestingly, it’s this kind of canon-breaking mash-up that EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said last year was one of the reasons why the company did not offer cosmetic-only items in Battlefront II’s loot boxes. In fact, Jorgensen said EA was against cosmetic items all-up.

“If you did a bunch of cosmetic things, you might start to violate the canon,” the executive said at the time. “Darth Vader in white probably doesn’t make sense, versus in black. Not to mention you probably don’t want Darth Vader in pink. No offense to pink, but I don’t think that’s right in the canon.”

It remains to be seen how deep the customisation will go. Indeed, we wouldn’t imagine Disney would be OK with the kind of situation Jorgensen offered up. Then again, this happened, so you never know what Disney might be OK with.

Whatever the case, EA said the updates to Battlefront II’s progression system are a “major step” in the company’s effort to “improve the core of the game and add new content.”

In addition to the changes laid out below, EA said it is planning to add new modes to Battlefront II in the future to keep things interesting and fresh. Some of the modes will be “radically different” than anything that’s come before. We’ll report back with more details as they are announced.

The debate around Battlefront II’s initial microtransaction system extended beyond gaming circles. Lawmakers from the United States and around the world launched investigations into loot boxes to, in some cases, try to determine if they constitute a form of gambling. In the wake of the Battlefront II controversy, the ESRB announced that it will put a label on games that will read “In-Game Purchases” to inform people, and in particular parents, that the game they are buying offers the ability to spend extra money. Some are questioning the effectiveness of this and asking if this new system will be effective at all.
