First Trailer for 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Spin-Off Starring Sophie Turner

    X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer

“They can’t begin to comprehend what you are…” 20th Century Fox has finally debuted the first trailer for Dark Phoenix, the X-Men spin-off movie focusing on Jean Grey as she becomes the “Dark Phoenix”. This is all connected to the previous X-Men series, and brings back a few of the characters from the most recent movies. Sophie Turner (from “Game of Thrones” and Josie) replaces Famke Janssen as Jean Grey; she already appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 as Phoenix. The cast includes many old and new members: James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, plus Jessica Chastain, Ato Essandoh, and Scott Shepherd. This looks a bit different than expected, not as much action. And definitely more of a bigger X-Men movie than something small and focused, but perhaps they felt it was necessary to connect with audiences of all kinds. ›››

Fantastic Fest Review: Shinichiro Ueda's Zombie Comedy 'One Cut of the Dead'

One Cut of the Dead Review

It’s another year of horror movies, all ranging in subgenre and tone, and you know what that means. Bring on the zombies. Granted, the zombie subgenre has been running rampant for about 15 years straight now, the tropes and setups becoming increasingly banal as time goes by. There’s a reason filmmakers continually go back to the zombie well. They keep coming up with new and innovative ways of handling the sub-genre. Take One Cut of the Dead, for instance. On the surface, it seems like another, stale attempt at breaking new ground with old equipment, but this film has something else hidden up its sleeve. One Cut of the Dead ends up being a sweet, funny, little magic trick of a movie that once again reinvents a been-there premise. ›››

First Trailer for Sundance Audience Award Documentary 'The Sentence'

    The Sentence Trailer

“Missing my daughters grow up – that’s what I was sentenced to.” HBO has debuted the official trailer for a documentary titled The Sentence, which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It’s a very big win for this film: a powerful, emotional, personal look at the life of a woman sentence to 15 year’s in prison for her deceased ex-boyfriend’s crimes. The title – The Sentence – is a reference to the mandatory minimum 15 year federal prison sentence she received for her tangential involvement with a Michigan drug ring years earlier. The film follows the story of Cindy Shank’s family, and her three young children, who patiently wait for their mother to finally be released. “This intimate portrait of mandatory minimum drug sentencing’s devastating consequences, captured by Cindy’s brother, follows her and her family over the course of ten years.” There’s a good reason it won the Audience Award this year. ›››

Watch: 'TK630' – Another Excellent 'Star Wars' Fan Film You Must See

    TK630 Short Film

“You knew this was going to be a suicide mission, didn’t you?” There’s always an abundance of new Star Wars fan films this year, but few of them are really this good. TK630 is an excellent, 10-minute Star Wars fan film short about a scout trooper – directed by Brendan H. Banks, an up-and-coming cinematographer who also shot this film. Marooned on a forest planet, an Imperial scout trooper hunts a lone Jedi, when he discovers an unexpected ally. Starring Josh Ruben & Starla Bolle, with Charlie McWade & Abe Danz. This is basic but good, and a nice twist focusing the story on an Imperial “bad guy.” It’s worth a quick watch. ›››

    Zoe and the Astronaut Trailer

“You two seem to be getting on very well…” An official trailer has debuted for a new sci-fi drama titled Zoe and the Astronaut, a super low budget indie film that hasn’t played at many festivals yet. The film is the directorial debut of English-Nigerian actor Eke Chukwu, telling the story of a woman with leukemia. One day, a young astronaut crash lands near her home. New to all things on the planet, she spends her last days teaching this astronaut about the wonders of Planet Earth. Oh I’m sure she does. Kirsten Foster stars as Zoe, along with Max Scully, Ian Reddington, Lisa Moorish, Lara Heller, Rob Oldfield, and Mike Fury. This looks like one of those extra campy, cliche love stories filmed without any budget. Have a look. ›››
